Dr. Melvin S Stern

We could not been happier with Dr. Stern knowledge, kindness, and professionalism. We have two kids and for more than 18 years Dr Stern has been there for them in every step on the way.

Dr. Stern is quite knowledgeable in his field and certainly has the medical training required to be a general care physician. However, his advice for young men (I have four boys) is lacking in substance and at times can be downright accusatory and nasty. My youngest was subject to a lecture when he became uncomfortable during an exam and did not wish to remove his shirt. Stern tried to guilt both he and I into removing it, saying that he would "not be able to do the exam" otherwise. I did not force my son to do this, which left Dr. Stern angry and passive aggressive for the remainder of the appointment. My two oldest (16 and 18) are overweight mainly due to depressive symptoms, which is a problem we often discuss at home. However, Dr. Stern takes a large portion of every appointment to call them lazy and irresponsible for not losing weight, and undermines their attempts to lose weight as "insufficient," then preaches to them that they will die young. See another physician.

I would not take my child here if it was the last doctors office in maryland. I personally think he has issues with black people....everytime I go there it is something different each time. I get tired of giving the same information over and over again. I think the state of Maryland is very racist and when you get doctors such as this one it makes you not want to go to the doctor around here. I wish i could say this was the only place that as a black woman i feel my chances are better if i just fix what ever is wrong at home. Because to trust racists doctors with my health is like signing my own death certificate. Take your child here if you wont to but don't say you haven't been warned about this man calling himself dr. good luck and stay safe I would not take my child here if it was the last doctors office in maryland. this doctor here is a funny piece of work. I been waiting on a prescription since November for my 10 year old son. I have tried several times to get assistance from Dr. Stern. This nasty man told me that I could just find another doctor or pay for the prescription out of pocket. He is not all that these reviews say he is . I think he is a bit strange so be careful with male patients parents. I am very upset with the ways things went with Dr. Stern Because I initially thought he was a good Doctor but after a few visits I find that he is not a good doctor and he really don't care about his patients. I am telling you to stay away unless you have simple medical concerns he may be able to answer those type of questions. Dr. Stern is very precise with his shots, he can make vaccines feel like nothing entered your skin.

I took my son to Dr. Stern's office since he was an infant. He is continuing to seek medical help and service even now my son is 16 yrs old and attending high school. He also asked for medical forms signed for getting participation in various sports in school.

Been taking my kids there for almost 2 years. We moved almost 40 minutes away and I’m having difficulty finding another pediatrician I trust. I love that I can call any time if there is a serious problem and I need advice, even when he is on vacation he answers his calls. Since being with him we haven’t needed to go to urgent care because he would rather see the kids. Really puts a moms mind at ease. I was a vaccine sceptic before going to him. Dr Stern is very straight forward so if you can’t take the truth, this is not the place for you. We decided to go with this doctor because while taking classes to find a pediatrician, we were in a class with someone else having a baby and we found out Dr Stern was his pediatrician when he was little...so we were sold.

He seems to be very knowledgeable and not judgmental. I enjoyed not being mom shamed but most importantly feel that his understanding and experience really make a difference in care. He considered my concerns rather than dismiss them like so many other pediatricians I have been to. He seems logical and willing to have an in depth conversation to figure out the what's the course of concern. Haven't dealt with any Billings issues as of yet- but if you find a pediatrician you like... I don't mind paying. He seems to be very knowledgeable and not judgmental. We have been with Dr. Stern for almost 11 years- We have 3 children that have been in his care since the first day of their life. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my children’s care. There is not a better pediatrician to be found. Dr. Stern is an amazing diagnostician, conservative with antibiotics, and the epitome of the "old family doctor": no reference to age. He has treated all 3 of my children, now grown, who continue to see him. Dr. Stern is a single practitioner, who has been known to answer his phone at 5:00am when a mom is frantic. What a treat to have a physician who knows your children, loves your children, and becomes part of your family. My 22 year old still calls him Pop Pop. I've read reviews about billing and would suggest this you can overcome. You can not however, find a better doctor to care for you child. There is not a better pediatrician to be found. He is the Pediatrician of the year 2002 .No wonder why he wouldnot receive that honor and title . He has been seeing my baby since birth . I cannot say enough kind words about Dr. Stern. I feel extremely lucky to have his support, guidance and expertise. He goes above and beyond to ensure he knows us personally. Dr. Stern is great and has exceeded my expectations. He takes the time to thoroughly discuss my child's issues and doesn't just dismiss symptoms or concerns as something minor. He is always available, sometimes even answering calls on his day off just to answer my questions and help me guide through. He is very knowledgeable, resourceful and has helped me tremendously with navigating medications and the best treatment care for my daughter. I would recommend him and this practice to anyone looking for a stable, professional and reputable pediatric office and an awesome Pediatrician . His staff are amazing as well . It was nice having a doctor sit down and speak with me with no pressure with time and having to rush to the next patient. He actually listened to my concern (this is major right here) and didn’t dismiss my opinions or thoughts on the situation. Didn’t criticize my parenting decisions but rather focused on the care and development of my child. Seems extremely knowledgeable on a wild range of topics, and seems to stay up to date with medical issues/research/developments etc.

Dr stern has care for our family over 30 years. His knowledge and experience is invaluable.

Dr stern was my pediatrician when I was younger when I had my son I knew I wanted doctor stern to be his pediatrician he is an amazing doctor and i wouldn't want no other pediatrician!! It dont matter if its after hours or weekend he will still answer!Even when my son was hospitalized he answered my call at 3am they also called for updates he's a great doctor I would highly recommend him to anyone!! Staff is very rude and discourteous. After speaking with the doctor it is easy to see where they learned this behavior. I would not recommend this practice to anyone unless you would like to be talked down to and treated like an infant, I myself am a nurse, so I know what proper treatment of a patient entails. If i had the ability to rate with 0 stars i would.

DO NOT USE THIS DOCTOR. We have been coming here since my first 2 kids were born (almost 10 years). Unfortunately, they screwed up the billIng and billed my ex wife for services she already paid for. Then they billed for stuff they couldn't even tell us what it was for and for appointments that we never made. When I last took my 2 kids there, they told me my ex had an over due balance and that they would not see my son until it was paid. So I paid. Little did I know, we didn't actually owe that money. Trying to get in touch with the one responsible for billing was impossible and the receptionist became very rude. She went on to tell me how the woman in billing spent "20 hours" looking into my case and that there was nothing more they could do. You would think bringing my kids there that long they would treat you as a valued customer and handle this mistake with consideration. But no. They did refund a small amount because my ex showed them multiple times that she had in fact paid for two of the things they billed us for. The rest of the bill they would not explain and would not refund our money. It was almost $500 so you think they would owe us an explanation but instead they took advantage of the situation since they already had the money. They would not even give me the time of day to discuss what happened. I tried to set up times to meet with dr stern personally to talk about it and they would not make me an appointment. Either they were not relaying to dr stern what happened or he just didn't want to deal with it but either way it was very disappointing and extremely frustrating. It's unfortunate because dr stern was a great doctor but I will never use them again and I would never refer their services to anyone. When it comes to billing and dealing with people's money and you make a mistake, you should be more than willing to correct it, and they wernt. Dr. Stern was my pediatrician for 20 years. When I found out I was pregnant, finding a doctor for my little one didn't ever cross my mind...I knew she would be seeing Dr. Stern. Dr. Stern has always been an advocate for my health and I knew he would do the same for my daughter and he has proved that over and over since she's been born. I hear of so many people who go to large practices who don't ever see their own doctor and have to talk to a stranger on the after hours line when they call for a question. Dr. Stern has answered the phone every single time I've called after hours or on a weekend (and trust me, there have been many) and that gives me, as a first time mom, great peace. Dr. Stern has been my children's pediatrician since they were born. It was incredibly disappointing to have to discontinue services with him due to the way i was recently treated by his staff and by Dr Stern. Dr Stern's billing system has never been top notch nor has his staff been. They lost record of two of my payments which i provided proof for on several occasions. Before my children's last visit I attempted once again to get the bill straight where i was treated very poorly by his receptionist Chris. Knowing there was a dispute they made my children's father make the payment before Dr Stern saw my son. After he made the payment for an amount i was never billed for (including what I had already paid) i immediately called my insurance where i found out that the claims were never submitted. Never once did I receive a phone call telling me there were issues with billing my insurance and my billing statements said "per your insurance". After finding this out I tried to contact Dr. Stern several times to which he never returned my calls. They finally returned the amount i was billed for twice but i was left with paying everything else out of pocket due to their negligence. Doctor Stern and his team are very professional and caring. He goes beyond and above the call of duty to provide the best care for the babies. They are excellent at preventive care! Besides, if your baby happens to get sick, the drive, the place, the secretary, the nurse and Doctor Stern put you and your baby in the best state of mind and treatment to recover. Well, if your kids get happy to go see their doctor you know there must be a reason. Dr. Stern has been our pediatrician for 7 years. We live 10 miles away and could go to a number of other offices much closer, but we don't! This started when my infant had recurring respiratory problems. After the 3rd hospitalization I realized every time I went to the doctor's office we saw someone different (there were 7 or 8 doctors at that office). Each had their own diagnosis and treatment. I was frustrated that there was no continuity, that I had to explain his history every time, and that he seemed to constantly be sick and week. Even if I liked the doctors, I didn't like the growing lack of confidence I was feeling. Dr. Stern was recommended to me by a friend who's son had had similar problems. Dr. Stern was FABULOUS. His treatment was aggressive and his follow ups incredibly thorough. Wow, my son started thriving! Since then, I have appreciated his wisdom, his challenges, and his care. Sometimes I have to wait quite a while in the office, but I know that is because he is offering someone else what they need, and not rushing through so that he can get the next patient in and out. I have called at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon, and he has seen me at 5:15 that same day! He doesn't have to do that, but he does. I'm writing this review because I want to show my true appreciation for Dr. Stern and everyone that works at his office. I've been bringing my twin boys to him for years (they are now 15) and can't say enough good things about our experience. Dr. Stern is effective, authentic and sincerely cares. He never rushes you through an appointment rather he takes the time needed to thoroughly assess and explain things. And he is there for you when you need him. I've called after hours before and had no problem taking with Dr. Stern personally about a concern. He is not like so many of the Pediatric offices of today where there is a group of doctors - some of them may or may not get to know you or your child - instead it's Dr. Stern himself that you see each time and it makes a big difference having someone that really knows and cares. Both of our kids are patients of Dr. Stern's and have been since day 1. We went to him on our neighbor's recommendation, and we have never regretted it. He is responsive, thoughtful, and above all, caring about the health and well being of our children. He takes time to answer any and all questions and provides helpful alternatives when a decision needs to be made. He is passionate about health issues and stays current with medical research and changing approaches. He may seem "prickly" at times, but that's usually because he wants to make sure parents are really listening to his concerns or that parents are articulating their own concerns to the best degree for the child. Our kids like visiting him - he is straight-forward with them and helps them navigate tougher waters when necessary (most times much better than we can). We trust his judgment, and we value his opinion, approach and professionalism. His staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable (always great to find, in this day and age of complex insurance navigation). The staff's rhythm is very fluid, which promotes the easy-going environment we have come to like so much. They all know us, and the kids know them, which is important for the kids to realize that doctor's offices are there for helpful reasons. The location is perfect for us - right around the corner, with very reasonable hours. The office is on a small road off the beaten path, much preferable to the office complex and bustling environment we see when we visit other medical professionals.
