About Dr. Matthew T Provencher
Reviews for Dr. Matthew T Provencher
Dr. Provencher and his team are fantastic!!! I drove from out of state in 2020 to see Dr.Provencher about my complex knee situation. He spent a considerable amount of time with me and though he isn't able to do my knee operation, he has been a tremendous help in trying to find me another surgeon, which has been a long and stressful process. Whenever I need assistance I can email or call the office, and I always get a prompt and courteous response. I HIGHLY recommend Dr.Provencher and his wonderful team!
The entire “Team Provencher” was everything a health care team should be. The office was efficient, letting me know when they received information I had sent. They are set up at The Steadman Clinic for patients all around the world. They do telemedicine, respond quickly, appointments are on time or even early if indeed you are. The surgical team was great; I felt I was in good hands. As far as the surgery, I am 2 months out of a reverse shoulder replacement and I am doing activities I was not sure I would ever be able to do. I am SO grateful to the skillful hands of Dr. Provencher. Life changer for me! The PT team is awesome as well. The entire “Team Provencher” was everything a health care team should be. Dr Provencher's team and the Steadman clinic are both extremely well run health care organizations. Communication with both is excellent. Dr. Provencher and his entire team at The Steadman Clinic are nothing but first class in every respect! After having complete anatomical shoulder replacements on both shoulders some 8 months ago (15 weeks between surgeries) I am nearly back to full activities with minimal pain and with full range of motion. I am thrilled with the results! During the initial evaluation appointment Dr. Provencher took the necessary time to fully understand my post surgery physical activity goals. He explained the advanced glenohumeral osteoarthritis condition of my shoulders and what his surgical recommendations were. All of my questions were answered completely, and it was during this exchange that I began to realize how fortunate I was to have chosen Dr. Provencher and The Steadman Clinic. His enthusiasm and confidence in recommending the procedures was apparent. I left that appointment believing that if I were to do my part by adhering to a disciplined post surgery rehabilitation regiment that my chances of gaining full shoulder function would be very high. With the exemplary care and direction of Dr. Provencher and his team and the guidance of my physical therapist those goals are now within reach. My special thanks to Katie, Robin, Sam, Scott and physical therapist Matt G. I have encouraged several friends and acquaintances to engage with Dr. Provencher and will continue to do so in the future. Dr Provencher is the best in his field, highly professional, exceptionally thorough and a wonderful bedside manner
I had a very bad experience. I am writing this to encourage anyone in need of surgery to obtain multiple opinions before using a provider at the Steadman Clinic. I was an active 32-year-old with no health issues other than my knee when I came here for a revision ACL surgery. My provider was Dr. Provencher. I was told I needed an ACL, meniscal transplant and OATS procedure to resolve the swelling and instability. They said this needed to be done in two surgeries so that they could remove a prior ACL screw in my shin and bone graft the tunnels before fixing anything. They said the first surgery would be very simple and second surgery could be done 6-8 weeks later. Two days after the 1st surgery and being in utterly excruciating pain I was diagnosed with a DVT blood clot near the surgical site at the ER and put on blood thinners. I continued to have bizarre complications including multiple infections of the surgical site. The wound would re-open after closing and weep like crazy. I then had SEVERE complications with the blood thinner. My PCP urged me to get a second opinion in regards to the infection and what to do going forward. Another surgeon explained that the Steadman clinic broke my tibia while removing the old ACL screw. The back of my tibia was popped off, a fracture on the side and missing bone on the front where it looks like the screw was bored out. They then smattered a massive amount of bone graft all over the bone which was protruding into my soft tissue. The new surgeon said he had never seen anything like this and that with the damage to my bone I’d be looking at 6-12 months before returning to normal activities or doing the second surgery. He also said that this 1st surgery was completely unnecessary. This explained why I had so many complications, but I was so shocked that I went to four more orthopedic surgeons to figure out if that second surgeon was right. And they all said the EXACT same thing. They had never seen anything like this and removing this screw/doing this surgery was not necessary. Every single one of these surgeons also had no idea why an OATS procedure was being recommended… again more unnecessary surgery. My operative report is a joke, it doesn’t mention anything about what actually happened to my leg in the OR. I question who actually performed this procedure. Be aware that the Steadman clinic often has interns/fellows involved in surgeries. I think it is more of a teaching clinic/factory than anything and would strongly recommend you find a competent surgeon elsewhere. I am definitely worse off than I was before I came here. Great staff, from diagnosis to and through surgery. Dr. Provencher is a great surgeon and truly cares about his patients!!!
I cannot be happier with my outcome! As a former hockey player, I had numerous shoulder separation injures which have been treated both operatively and non-operatively in the past. For the past 5 years I have been experiencing shoulder pain on a daily basis especially when reaching over my head or sleeping on a side. Dr. Provencher and his team took great care of me. I had dissection of my collarbone (the end of it) 6 months ago and I feel like a new person. Everything went well and I recovered even sooner than anticipated. Thank you! Words cannot express the depth of care that I received with Dr. Provencher and his team. I came to Dr. Provencher with a complex shoulder injury and a failed surgery that I was told would need a total replacement (I'm an active 33 year old so that was a no go). Dr. Provencher took my case and was able to repair my shoulder without a metal replacement. Through the whole experience Dr. Provencher always listened. He never interrupted me and always gave me an answer to all my questions. Scott, Dr. Provencher's PA, is above and beyond any PA I have ever encountered. I would recommend any and everyone with a shoulder injury to seek out Dr. Provencher and his team above anyone else in the country. My time with Team Provencher has been the best customer service experience in my life. I have consistently left all appointments feeling entirely supported and empowered with information to propel me forward in the recovery process. Thank you for all that you have done and you embody both compassion and professionalism. I am truly grateful to have landed on your team. I was given the best Christmas gift ever by being able to ski with my daughter for the first time in three years with very little pain. I now feel back to my old self thanks to the expertise of Team Provencher with lots of skinning up the mountain, skiing and biking (all activities that I love but pain had held me back for a long time). I'd like to start by saying that my experience with Dr. Provencher and the Steadman Clinic were excellent! I had a Latarjet procedure (bone graft with screws) and labrum repair done on my right shoulder. I had very minimal pain and was back at work after only 2 weeks. 8 weeks after the the first surgery I had the exact same procedure done on my left shoulder with the same great results. I am 11 weeks post-op on my right shoulder and 3 weeks post-op on my left shoulder and doing great. Really looking forward to getting back on the dirt bike this summer and the snowboard this Fall! I would also like to mention the nurses and anesthesia team, on both of my surgeries. I could not of asked for better care, you couldn't help but sense the comradery, confidence and dedication that they all had. I can not speak highly enough of Dr. Provencher and his team! My knee surgery wasn't black and white, as I had an osteochondroma with MCL and hamstring damage, so it was only Dr. Provencher and his team I trusted to go in to see what needed to be done. He was recommended to me from multiple individuals in the Vail Valley who worked at the surgery center, so I had high hopes from the start. His resume is mind blowing, but his humble heart and compassion is what radiates the minute he steps in the door! Dr. Provencher and his team are professional, brilliant, compassionate, and from day one, I knew their goal was to help me get back to 100%, chasing mountain records again. They were always available when I called with questions, and they never made me feel rushed at my doctor appointments. Prior to my decision to have surgery, when I had questions, I always was able to speak to Dr. Provencher, even over the phone, or if I wanted to make an appointment because I had some anxiety, he was there. Following surgery, he stopped by my recovery room, (not many docs do that) and followed up with me with a video of exactly how the surgery went and what he did. The weeks following my surgery, I always had him and his team by my side for questions and the healing process. My questions were always answered with a quick phone call, if there was ever any confusion I had. I will never recommend anyone else for knee surgery, this team is one in a million. Dr. Provencher is a patient-minded, talented surgeon that helped give me my shoulder back after more than 15 years of issues. With Dr Provencher, Robin, and the rest of his team at the Steadman Clinic, have no doubt that you are in great hands - thank you!
I was already a patient at the Steadman Clinic when I went to see Dr. Provencher. I have had knee pain and some instability for quite a few years now. I recently had surgery where Dr. Provencher cleaned out the joint, meniscus and removed a lot of scar tissue. My pain post-op was so much less after surgery than it was before surgery that I only needed to take a few pain pills before I realized I didn't need them at all. I had 10 orthopedic surgeries before meeting Dr. Provencher, so my standards for selecting a surgeon were already very high. I've been involved in multiple sports and fitness for over 40 years, and it’s important to me to perform at my highest ability. So I only trust my body to surgeons who are both highly skilled and experienced with athletes. Dr. Provencher is certainly that and more. An additional draw for me is his ongoing research in biologics (i.e. treatments such as PRP and stem cell therapy that have the potential to enhance healing). For my most recent surgery (double partial meniscectomy and debridement of the knee) I opted for a PRP (platelet rich plasma) infusion into the joint concurrent with my surgery. It's too early in my recovery to give feedback on its effectiveness, but I appreciated having the option of choosing that adjunctive therapy and working with a doctor who has significant experience with it. As many other reviewers have stated, Dr. Provencher's bedside manner is wonderful, he had time for all of my questions, and it's obvious that he cares about his patients. His entire team (including PA's, assistants, and administrative staff) is also friendly and professional, which is an incredible bonus. I also appreciate Dr. Provencher's willingness to accommodate my special requests for surgical anesthesia and medications. I chose to be awake during the procedure with a spinal block and no sedation instead of general anesthesia. One other thing that made my experience with Dr. Provencher truly exceptional is the synergistic benefit of his practice being part of the Steadman Clinic. In particular, the Steadman Clinic provides supportive services specifically tailored to meet the needs of out of town patients like me. At 11 AM on a Monday, I had my first appointment with Dr. Provencher. Thanks to in-house Xray and MRI and incredibly efficient scheduling, I was able to discuss images and treatment options (in person) with Dr. Provencher later that same day, and have surgery the following day. Not only did their combined team take care of my expedited insurance approvals, but they also provided free valet parking for my rental car and a concierge to help me locate local restaurants and discounted lodging. And if I had stayed in town longer, I could have taken advantage of the convenience of their in-house physical therapy center. To obtain this same level of medical care in my home state of Hawaii isn’t possible. It may be a long journey from Hawaii to Vail, but now that I've been there, I can't imaging going anywhere else. On both knees... I had to have an OATS Procedure (Osteochrondro Autograft Transplantation) to graft cartilage under my kneecap. Genetic disorder had my knee cap's tracking incorrectly, causing damage to the underside of the knee. Along with the OATS, I had to have a Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy, to move the patella tendon so that the knee cap WOULD track correctly, as to not damage the new cartridge. I couldn't be happier! I feel blessed to have had such a talented surgeon! My knees feel so smooth, they feel like they did 10 years ago! I need to finish this review with a note. Physical Therapy is as important as the surgeon performing the operation. Please, make sure to get the appropriate PT afterwards. The most talented surgeon can only start the process. You, and PT, need to finish. Dr Provencher's wonderful work can easily be destroyed with poor PT afterwards!
I was a basketball player in college and had shoulder problems for years. The pain was not as bad, but as I was getting in my 40s it started hurting more with activities. I came to see Dr. Provencher and he diagnosed a labrum tear. He took 45 minutes to help me understand what options I have. I decided to proceed with the scope surgery. Now, a year later I am pain free and more importantly I can do sports again. Very thankful!

Dr. Provencher is a talented, patient-oriented surgeon that brings skill and confidence to bear for his patients. With a long-term shoulder issue and two preceding surgeries, I came to Dr. Provencher with no expectations. Instead, I found hope and a return to the activities I enjoy without pain and with range of motion. I resoundingly recommend him and his team in Vail!
Surgery was unsuccessful. After months of telling them it wasnt working, I have too much swelling, take an MRI, blah blah blah I finally went to get a second opinion and low and behold I should’ve had surgery months ago! Now I might have permanent nerve damage running all the way down my leg. Would not recommend!!
Outstanding care! I didn’t think I could be back to 100%, but Dr Provencher and his team made it happen. Very very greatfull!
I am a semi-professional athlete and came to Dr. Provencher for a third opinion. I was thoroughly impressed with his evaluation and taking the time to hear my story. He treated my knee condition with surgery including cartilage replacement and a new ligament. Now it is as good as new! The best doc I ever had!
Dr. Provencher literally saved our sons leg after the scar tissue from previous doctors surgeries had restricted circulation. He went from other doctors talking about amputation - to being able to mountain bike ride & walk without a limp! We are so very grateful Dr. Provencher was able to do what he did.
I've seen four other shoulder surgeons in New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. Dr. Provencher diagnosed the complex problem easily and came up with a solution that made sense. There was no discussion or inquiry from Dr. Provencher. I was told what was wrong and what was to be done next. As I was already noticing progress in healing and have had no prior issues surgery seemed to be extreme. I voiced that I did not want to have surgery and Dr. Provencher said: “so you do not want to do surgery” to which I replied “no”. At that point Dr. Provencher reached his hand out for a handshake to bid me goodbye. No interest in my well-being. PS Injury healed without surgery.
I was already a patient of a different surgeon before I saw Dr. Provencher. I had been having pain and some instability in my knee for years and realized it was time to have it looked at. I recently had surgery where Dr. Provencher did a extensive clean out of my knee. The pain after surgery was so much less than before that I took 4 pain pills during my recovery phase. I am very happy I went to see Dr. Provencher.
I had an unexpected complicated shoulder problem and Dr. Provencher got me on his schedule quickly and the surgery itself went well. When I reached out to him with questions and concerns he responded to me immediately on a weekend! He clearly cares a lot.
Very pleasant and thoughtful doctor. He took nice care of my husband when he got injured while skiing in Vail. It turned out to be a minor injury but his reassurance and explanation of the injury made us feel more comfortable. Thank you Dr. Provencher

Dr Provencher is an extremely skilled and caring Orthopedic Surgeon. I feel so very fortunate that Dr Hackett at The Steadman Clinic asked Dr Provencher to join my team. Simply the best shoulder physician around. I saw Dr. Provencher for a second opinion re my shoulder since it was not clear to me if I need a surgery or nonoperative care would be good enough. He spent over half an hour talking to me. He explained the pros and cons of each treatment and tried to understand what I need the most. At the end I was able to make my own decision and decided to proceed with the nonoperative care. Big respect for this guy!

My wife came to see Dr. Provencher for her shoulder pain. He spent 30 minutes talking to us and helping her figure out what is the best option for her. She ended up having a surgery and now 1 year out - she is 100% back to normal!! This guy is respectful and knows his stuff very well. Highly recommended!
I am so grateful for Dr. Provencher & Dr. LaPrade. These two professionals and their team (Dr. Jon Godin and Sam, P.A.) took extraordinary care of me after a skiing accident earlier this week while I was vacationing in Beaver Creek. I was not on the schedule to be seen, yet this team worked together effortlessly to provide pain relief and care at a moments notice. I am so grateful to all of them! I highly recommend you inquire with Dr. Provencher if ever you are in need of world class care.

I came to see Dr. Provencher for my shoulder pain. He was extremely helpful and spent over half an hour with me in the clinic looking for the best treatment for my shoulder. I got a steroid injection, started with physical therapy and so far my shoulder feels better. He is the third doctor I have seen and took the best care of me! I am so happy to have him close to my favorite ski area! All the best!
I was recommended to Dr. Provencher by another orthopedist for severe ac joint separation. He is extremely well qualified and I am very happy with the results. His PA Katy was a joy to work with and helped coordinate and assist in the surgery, making my operative experience as comfortable as possible. My only regret is that he is leaving the area, not that I am hoping or expecting to need his services again. Mass. General's loss.
Very pleased with him and his staff. I was referred to him and another surgeon to discuss a bone graft for recurrent instability. I was comfortable with his thought process and recommendations where I had already had 6 prior shoulder surgeries so I made the decision to go with him versus the other surgeon.
Successfully performed complex right knee ACL/PCL reconstructive surgery
Dr. Provencher is the absolute best! I trusted him with my life and would trust him with the lives of my children. He gets it!
Dr. Provencher is a world class surgeon. I have commanded United States Marines overseas on the toughest + most austere of combat grounds in Afghanistan and if it wasn't for the work Dr. Provencher provided on my left and right knee, my career as an Infantry Officer in The United States Marine Corps would be over. He has repaired my LCL, ACL x2, and my MCL and after both surgeries my knees came back stronger than before the injurie. It is the greatest of honors to know this American Patriot.
Dr. Provencher was extremely attentive and caring during my appointments. Discussed my care plan in detail with me as well as what the possible next steps could be. He took the time to call me to see how I was feeling after an injection. This made me feel very cared for, and I would recommend him to anyone who wants top notch customer service and patient care from a brilliant surgeon.
Dr. Provencher is one of the kindest doctors I've ever encountered. The care he and his staff has provided to me is incredible. His team, including Katie and Alex are awesome! Dr. P helped me so much and is great!!!
