I saw Dr. Goff twice in the last month, once for my knees and ones for my shoulder. He reviewed the MRI I brought from Europe, and walked me through how he made his diagnosis of a rotator cuff tear. He explained that I will eventually need surgery, but I could wait, perhaps several years, as long as I get ongoing monitoring. Explain the procedure in depth, including the recovery time and how he would manage pain. He was very conservative about my torn meniscus. He told me I can probably go throughout my life without surgery as long as I do physical therapy. Dr. Goff was friendly, treated me like an equal, and clearly put my well being ahead of any financial incentives to operate. Not all surgeons do that (I come from a family of surgeons and hear a lot of stories) Overall, a good experience

I am only writing this review so you skip seeing him altogether..He barely gives you a minute of his time and has ZIP compassion and no personality..His "clinic" should be shut down, this surgery is not for an OUTPATIENT, and when I addressed the issue of being on my own and a senior, he couldn't have cared less..THIS PROCEDURE IS SERIOUS and 2 nights in the hospital is mandatory. He told me I needed to be in a nursing home for 3 weeks, and I am 5 days out and doing fine at home because I had the best doctor, Dr. BAVA, what a difference in personalities and compassion...I could go on and on, but I think this is enough for you NOT GO TO HIM..SHAME ON JONATHAN GOFF, he needs to take a happy pill

I had the unfortunate experience of falling off my mountain bike at speed, landing on my left shoulder which promptly smashed. After X-ray in ER I was referred to Dr Goff for surgery. The goal was to repair my existing bones, but given the egg shell nature of the humeral head, an in-situ emergency shoulder replacement was deemed necessary - resulting in about 6 hrs of surgery in total. This turned out to be a very good decision. Now, some 7 years later, including scar tissue removal a few months the after the primary procedure to open up motion, my new shoulder is still going strong with only slight differences due to the muscle injury in the original accident. I have to thank Dr Goff. He did an excellent job with me and I’m grateful to have 95% shoulder function - including being able to ride again, though a little more carefully. I can’t recommend him enough for sensitive and contemporary shoulder repair. Brilliant.

I came to Dr. Goff for shoulder pain, and in a very brief consultation he recommended surgery, sounding very confident he could correct a previous surgeon's mistakes. After going through the many pre-surgery protocols, I had a final pre-surgery meeting with Dr. Goff and staff where he "reminded" me that he wouldn't know what he was working with until he got into the shoulder, and that the surgery could fix the pain, might not fix anything, or could even make it worse. Either way, six months of highly restrictive rehab until we found out. He had offered none of those crucial caveats during the initial consultation when I had to make the decision, and with him suddenly acting far less confident I had to seriously rethink that decision. At which point Dr. Goff became needlessly arrogant and huffy. I canceled the surgery and have since found orthopedic specialists without a God complex.

Rude and unprofessional doctor! Told me I was suspicious for wearing a mask and proceeded to threaten to call the cops on me for doing my job! I politely left and his manager (not him) apologized for the altercation and accusations he made. She was sweet and most other doctors I've spoke to at cal ortho and spine seem to be great people! but I'm surprised he made it out of med school with his attitude.. (see below poor reviews of his work and rude remarks to patients.. it's not a big surprise). To summarize, inside or outside his office it seems like he only accepts his answer as right and thinks he is better than anyone else.Steer clear of him. Your body deserves better! Nov, 16, 2020 I saw Dr. Goff at CA Orthopedics & Spine on October 7. The X-ray and MRI tests he prescribed showed a small rotator cuff tear, some bursitis and tendonitis. I chose to do 4 weeks of physical therapy. My physical therapist evaluated my progress carefully and faxed the results to Dr. Goff who hadn't bothered to read the report. When I tired to talk to him about my pain situation he simply replied “Do you want a cortisone injection or surgery?”indicating the limit of his interest. Nor was he interested in looking at a printout of pillows that might relieve pain. I then commented “ You are a strange doctor” . Dr. Goff saw this comment as an insult which he could not accept. I was told I should choose a new dr. He could provide names. The cortisone injection was left hanging until a nurse practitioner came in and offered to give it. In tears, I accepted. Dr. Goff showed no willingness to care about me, his patient. I cannot recommend him.

I wanted to share my awful experience with Dr. Jonathan Goff, to warn other prospective patients to avoid this bad surgeon if possible. After breaking my humeral head in a mountain biking accident, Goff was assigned to me by Marin General Hospital. In surgery he was unable to align my bones (so now I’m dealing with a permanent joint deformity) and was careless inserting the hardware to secure the fracture, specifically, the plate was misaligned and he left a large screw sticking out of my bone into my joint. This severely limited my motion and created a chronic pain syndrome. When I told him of my ongoing pain he was insensitive and not interested, dismissing that I needed large doses of opioids to get through the night. He said “trust me, I saw that the screw was in the bone”, even though the X-ray showed something else - see attached pictures! Dr. Goff can get very defensive and belligerent when faced with questions. Once he told me aggressively, “I think you must have hit your head in the bike accident and have a concussion, since you asked the same question previously”, which I indeed did because of his habit to blow off questions dismissively! Another time he started shouting at me when I needed to redirect a conversation after he had misunderstood my question. Despite my pleas to start rehabilitation, Dr. Goff kept me in my sling passed what I have learned is best practice, and after 10 weeks of complete immobility I built up a tremendous amount of scar tissue in the joint (which a follow-up arthroscopic procedure could not even penetrate), creating long-term problems. I’m considering filing a complaint with the California Medical Board based on the encouragement of several doctor friends, who feel Dr. Goff’s behavior and poor practice should be sanctioned. Over the past few months, three separate therapists from around Marin complained to me about Dr. Goff saying he was (at best) an awful listener and communicator, which had hindered patient progress/recovery. Dr Goff fixed up my shattered broken collar bone perfectly with a titanium plate and five screws for each of the fragments. I was completely off the opioids within only 9 days of surgery and completely off Tylenol within another 5 weeks. This blew away my expectations of how well (at my age) a gruesome compound bone fracture can be fully repaired and heal. Mt Tam Orthopedics office in Larkspur is literally awesome from the front office staff and nurses to their physician's assistants each of whom take pride in delivering excellent and timely patient care. Kudos Dr Goff for getting me back on my bike, running, playing basketball, tennis, and swimming months before anyone imagined could be possible. I saw Dr. Goff today and feel very confident going into my upcoming shoulder repair surgery. He was direct, thorough and didn't hesitate to give me a clear picture of what I can expect from the procedure. Short term, I can expect more pain before less, and there is a long term recovery required before attempting any movement that would compromise the surgery. But, doing this gives me my best chance of getting back to being the athlete I used to be. I will review again post procedure.
