Horrible pain doctor. Dont waste your time .
You quite possibly could be wasting your time and money with this doctor. It was a clear waste of my time.
Dr. Hull has been a life line for pain management from chronic pain due to a thalamic bleed stroke. He is committed to help me through a long struggle with both compassion and up to date pain management medications and strategies. He is able to separate and treat different kinds of pain both mechanical and nerve pain and carefully diagnosed the different kinds of pain I was having.
Don’t waste your time! Worst Dr ever. I made it clear I do not want opioids. I do however want to try meds for nerve pain (my ortho has said I am having nerve pain). He continues to promise, but always has some excuse for not giving them. His nurse made it quite clear he won’t give me the meds unless I join his support group. This is blackmail and totally unprofessional. Don’t waste your time! Worst Dr ever. I made it clear I do not want opioids. I find Dr. Hull to be an excellent doctor of pain management. He is knowledgeable, patient, compassionate and empathetic. Wonderful qualities for a physician in his field.
I call him Dr. Hell. I will start by letting you know that finding a doctor to treat my condition was not easy. I had been bounced around by one doctor to another to get help. Keep in mind I didn’t ask for this help. I have been to an osteopathic surgeon (7 yrs or more with him, I felt as tho I could trust him and he began prescribing me pain meds for my back and neck and I liked him as a Dr. and When he found out that I had a herniated disc in my neck He sent me to a neurological surgeon and she took over the prescription. I didn’t understand why I had such pain in my back! I thought it was my oversized breasts so I scheduled a reduction and it didn’t help! I went to the tummy tuck and that Didn’t help! All the while I’m getting these surgeries done I’m asking myself,” why aren’t they doing an MRI of my spine to figure out what’s going on instead of letting me get these very invasive surgeries done?” Neither surgery helped. I called my neurosurgeon, because I had to get a refill of my Vicodin and as I’m talking to her nurse she started grilling me on where I have been getting my medication.. I’m thinking she has my chart in front of her before opening her mouth! To be judged like that or talk to you in such an accusatory tone didn’t sit well with me so I had it out with the nurse. My snarky reply,” I had a refill”! Did you perhaps notice that while looking at my chart? Nope! So when I go to the office of this Dr. at Maine neuro and we discussed what took place between her nurse and myself she apologized for the reaction and behavior of her nurse but that’s it! I got squeezed out and the nurse got to keep her position . This doctor that I have been with and trusted for 3 years is now kicking me to the curb but in a way that won’t be noticeable so I can’t report her and is setting me up to be with DR.HELL! The moment I walked into this office I wasn’t treated as a chronic pain patient, I was treated as an addict. We have meeting & he decides to put me on methadone & Vicodin! Talk about someone being very sick… Each medication he would put me on made me sicker and sicker because I am very sensitive to a lot of medications not just opiates but SSRIs as well! So on our first visit common protocol is to take a urine test and I think nothing of it because I am not into Coke or heroin or anything illicit! I leave this office with my prescription and go home. I going to see him about a week later and he asked me some questions and then asked me where I got the Percocet from. Now keep in mind that I am no doctor nor am I a medical assistant or a pharmaceutical representative. Also, I won’t remember the one Percocet I took two weeks after I took it because to me I’m not doing anything sneaky or wrong. I didn’t know that it was any different than the Vicodin and I had asked someone if I could have one of theirs because I didn’t have any for the appointment that day and it was late in the day. So I’m not going to abscess about one little pill that I took that I thought had no bearing on my urine test whatsoever! So when he asked me where I got it I honestly couldn’t remember. Dr. hell told me to “go home and think of another LIE and EXCUSE better than the one I just gave him! I WASNT lying and that’s what piissed me off! He’s obviously dealt with some massive pill heads in the past but I’m not one! I go home called my mom in NH and I told her what happened and we put our heads together and we realized that I took one of her pills and that’s what showed up in my urine! He excepted that but didn’t believe me so at This point it was incredibly difficult to call and ask for a refill. He would say things like call me in a couple of days and I’ll let you know how I feel and maybe I’ll fill it maybe I’m I won’t! Maybe I’ll tell you one thing and then I’ll tell you another. I was a nervous wreck every time I had to deal with him. I was honest with him and I wasn’t going to lie just to make the truth sound plausible. It’s like the cops making you admit to doing a crime that you Didn’t do. He crude & rude. I call him Dr. Hell. I will start by letting you know that finding a doctor to treat my condition was not easy. I had been bounced around by one doctor to another to get help. Keep … More
Dr. Hull is skating until he retires. He's not willing to put the work in. His staff is wonderful
I saw Dr Hull back in January of 2016 I had then been thru 5 surgeries on my Back which were unsuccessful I was in so much pain ,I sat down after he reviewed my MRI. He told me that I see you should be under care for your pain and be on pain meds BUT I'm not doing that instead I'm recommending you come off everything. I asked about a back stimulator, and asked about my fusions and if they are fused .He told me nothing will help now. I have never seen such a rude and uncaring Dr in my life. Since that time I went to Boston as the pain was overwhelming. The first Dr I saw looked at my MRI and told me you have several surgical problems that need to be taken care of.My other fusions never fused. The bolts in my back were entirely loose .I had bone spurs ,and some Disk left in there . I had a 9 hour surgery in Boston. This Dr told me ,all of the work he had to do. This was the same MRI I had taken to Dr Hull . It's not just the Extreme rudeness, Its the fact he cannot read an MRI or he read it and did not care . He is not fit to be a pain Dr. When Boston read his report on me, They agreed. Runs pain center at Mercy Hospital but doesn't believe anyone needs pain meds. I've had chronic pain since 1997 and in 2011 I wanted to try and manage my pain without meds. After eight months it was clear that it wasn't working, that medication was needed, and eventhough Dr. Hull had promised that he would put me back on medication if unsuccessful, he refused. Eventually his nurse practitioner (my main provider) insisted that I get medication again because my situation was so bad. Also, I kept hearing from them how great their pain center was, how they were setting up a program to include PT, OT, psychology, exercise, etc...did not see it in the 1.5 years I was a patient. All I got was one visit a month where I would talk to the practitioner and they gave me referrals for injections that I knew would not work. I don't recommend to anyone. Dr Hull and the staff at Mercy are the best I have ever seen.Very positive and helpful.Awesome!
Dr. Stephen Hull is among the very few exemplary doctors I've ever had, and as a PTSD chronic pain patient, I've had many many doctors over the past thirty years. Dr. Hull is a treasure. His knowledge of medicine, the broad range of drugs and their appropriate applications, and the physiology of pain and how we experience it, is encyclopedic. His program at the pain clinic at Mercy Hospital, provides specific and practical tools for understanding pain, and for managing it, to the purpose of participating in life more fully. I'd been trying to get rid of my pain for years, trying literally dozens of treatment modalities with no success. In the year and a half that I've been part of Dr. Hull's program, (classes twice a week and support/discussion group once a week), my life has expanded exponentially. I still have some pain, but Dr. Hull has enabled me to have a rich and rewarding life anyhow. In the course of this journey, Dr. Hull has demonstrated over and over, his respect for his patients and for our struggles. He is open about his own efforts to manage pain, and is in effect part of his own program. He sets a good example for the rest of us. His personal and professional integrity, as I have witnessed these last eighteen months, are beyond reproach. I have been shocked to read the disparaging remarks some people have posted about him. I hope they find relief somewhere, but I think Dr. Hull is not the appropriate target for their disappointment. I am deeply grateful for what he has given me, and continues to give. My name is John and I have seen Dr. Hull for the past five years. This Dr is the most compassionate Dr I know. When I read a few reviews above I was shocked for those statements are pure false..... This Dr. goes above and beyond to care for you. Believe me when I say you are not just a number with him. He cares about your overall health and not just your pain. If you are having other complications he will guide you in the right direction.... I just had to say something for this man really cares for you. Lastly I think he has a photographic memory for he knows stuff about me that we talked about months or years earlier. You want an excellent Dr go see him..... Sincerely, John H. I have seen Dr. Hull for several years, at least and I find him to be an excellent doctor. Dr. Hull runs a Living Life Well program where he teaches about the nature of pain and how to deal with pain. He does not offer any magic remedies, but he listens very closely to what I say and it is good to be heard. Dr. Hull also runs a group for people who have been through the Living Life Well program. The group is every Monday and free of charge. I don't know of any other doctors that offer their time

Dr. Hull is the first doctor I have been able to trust in years to be in charge of my care. He is kind and empathetic, but also honest and direct. I believe he truly cares about each of his patients and goes above and beyond todays standards.

Dr Hull is one of my favorite doctors. I have several specialists and many health conditions, so I've spent several years building relationships with great physicians. It's Like a family at the Mercy Health Care system and would highly recommend Dr Hull as a pain management specialist. He is constantly trying to find new and innovated ways to treat pain and stays up to date in the world of pharmaceuticals by attending seminars. Professional and caring, with an amazing staff as well! Solid A+!

Dr. Hull is one of the best physicians I have ever met. He is thoughtful and considerate and his medical knowledge is up-to-date (maybe state-of-the-art as far as helping patients live with chronic pain!). In addition to seeing him for medical care after interventional medical approaches ceased to be effective for me, I participated in his 12-week Living Life Well class at Mercy Hospital to learn strategies for managing my chronic pain. I also attend the alumni support group offered weekly at Me

Kind and caring Dr who challenges me to be a better person, will often tell you he is proud of you for working hard with your pain. He presents many different types of treatments for pain, as well as pain medicine. He is very measured and want the best for me even if I can't see it myself. He works so very well with dependency. Truly amazing Dr.

He was by far the most uncaring rude doctor I have ever been to. As well as his nurse. I have witnessed his lack of compassion to his patients old and young alike

Dr. Hull is one of the greatest doctors I have ever had care with. I completely trust him. Anytime he has given me information he always has backed it up with several studies etc. I used to see him 5 yrs ago, then reconnected with him in the last year and a half. I would not trust anyone else to do my care. My situation is very complicated. He is one of the most knowledgeable doctors I have ever known. I wish there were more doctors who cared as much as he does.
