Dr. James Matthew Cavanaugh

I love Portsmouth Dental and Dr. Cavanaugh. There is nothing worse than going to the dentist and being scolded for not brushing enough, flossing, etc. The office cares about me and my dental health but understands that they don't have to berate me to get on the good dental path. Lacey is my hygienist and I will reschedule if I have to see anyone else. Everyone in the office great but this the first time I stayed on a dental regimen and I know it is because of the great care I get from Lacey and Dr. Cavanaugh.

It is like a breath of fresh air when you enter Dr. Cavanaugh’s office! The entire staff greet with enthusiasm and with compassion. Dr. Cavanaugh is so friendly, and, most importantly, gentle and thorough every time I come for help with my teeth. His work ethic is professional; relieving pain and remedying the source. I would be remiss if I didn’t commend Tracie, the dental assistant. She is so informative and patient that it puts one at ease immediately! Highly recommend the complete dental office.

My dental needs were met quickly and without any stress. Dr. Cavanaugh and his staff are always helpful and pleasant.

Dr. Cavanaugh is the best dentist I have ever had. He is kind, efficient and his work from fillings to crowns to preventative care has been excellent. He listens to your concerns and acts in your best interest to reach your dental goals. He has a top notch staff and a clean and modern facility.

Dr. Cavanaugh and staff are exceptional. They explain everything about procedures being performed. Very gentle and kind. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great dentist.

Dr Cavanaugh and his staff are truly the very best ! Melissa and Keona always make u feel welcome as soon as you walk in! Katlyn is the best hygienist and very professional I have been going to Portsmouth Family Dental for years now and would not think of going anywhere else Dr Cavanaugh and Katlyn have kept my teeth healthy and I am extremely grateful!!

For 2021, I chose Dr. Cavanaugh because he was in-network for UnitedHealth care AARP Medicare Advantage insurance. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that Dr. Cavanaugh decided to take this plan out of network. When I first called the office, I was told that UHC was responsible. Not true. For me and I am sure many others will be impacted by Dr. Cavanaugh's decision. Now, we have to pay out of network costs. Example, $150 for yearly cleaning in November. In addition, we can't pay the cost of a possible tooth implant scheduled for November which was removed earlier this year while we were still in network. I chose this dentist because he was in network. His decision is not fair for me or my family.
