Service: Preventative Colonoscopy High level of care and knowledge. The entire care team operated like a well oiled machine with great bedside manner. Would highly recommend Dr. Mertz and team for colonoscopy. Would give a 5th star, but the front office could use a patient-facing administrative and logistical-focused technological uplift. The combination of redundant physical paperwork combined with a 2-hour wait from suggested time of arrival is increasingly a dying trend among healthcare services.

No bedside manner, does not care about his patients. Somehow thought telling me mom "oh you have stomach cancer" while being sedated for surgery is a great idea. Would give a 0 if I could.

Disappointed by his rude behavior! Nashville has excellent providers.....please do yourself a favor and find another qualified GI specialist.

Absolutely no bedside manor. Rudely told my mom she had cancer while being wheeled back for surgery. She had no idea. Worst experience ever.

He is the best. Knowledgeable, understanding, intelligent, and always fills me and my wife in on all information after our procedures.

Dr Mertz found a serious condition that led me to needing a liver transplant. I have an annual colonoscopy now and I've done them for more than 10 years. Everything about my clinic visits as well as my surgical procedures have been exceptionally well done. My wife works with him too and we both love him. He literally saved my life and I would recommend his services to anyone!

Dt Mertz and his staff are wonderful . He saved my life! And his nurse, Stephanie, is top rate! So are the receptionists.

I have been a patient of Dr. Mertz for over 10 years and he is the greatest! I have never had any difficulties with scheduling appointments or any problems while there.He has tremendous manners and listens carefully to everything you have to say. He answers all your questions as well. I have had several appointments and procedures. He explains what you need and then sits down with you to go over the details. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone!

Great! After having been misdiagnosed by a prior physician, Dr Mertz knew exactly what my diagnosis is. He is treating my complex condition with his superior knowledge. His nurse is fantastic. I don't hesitate to call the office with any pressing issues. Response is prompt and on point. I would highly recommend.

I don’t know what planet the folks who gave Dr. Mertz bad reviews are from, but I had a wonderful experience and am so glad to have found him! He is warm; friendly; highly knowledgeable, and thorough. Never did I feel rushed. He listened to my concerns, explained his plan of treatment going forward. He answered all my questions, making sure I understood procedures. His staff is great, especially his nurse, Stephanie. I did not have to wait long, either in the waiting room or the exam room. Front desk personnel were efficient & friendly. After struggling for years, I feel I have finally found someone who understands my Gastro problems and will help me overcome them … he’ll definitely do his best to do so!

Have not one good thing to say. Will not let me post the truth about this doctor.

I was referred to Dr. Mertz by my internist. Mertz' office called and we set the colonoscopy procedure for Monday. The caller indicated they would mail me prep instructions. I specifically asked that they also be emailed to me. Upon verifying my correct email address we ended our call. I waited the rest of the week for both the mail and email, neither of which ever arrived. I was to begin prep on Sunday for a Monday noon colonoscopy, but without instructions, I made the assumption that Dr. Mertz' practice was being managed poorly. If they can't handle simple information properly, I have zero confidence they can handle detailed technical / medical information any better. I refuse to be treated by any doctor in that practice.

Had a colonoscopy this morning, 2nd one in 7 years. Very smooth procedure

He and his staff were wonderful! Extremely nice and helpful throughout all of my visits. I would recommend him and have many times.

Excellent physician- we were referred by our local docs; the patient after us by docs in Knoxville- this is the doctor that other doctors want to have. I am a physician, too, and Dr. Mertz is truly top notch. Very knowledgeable and explains everything really well, answers whatever questions you have patiently and thoroughly. The procedure that my husband had went well and Dr. Mertz spoke with us both before and after the procedure. Top rate physician. Very courteous, very thoughtful, very kind.

Tried to get an appointment as per my doctor's suggestion. Couldn't get past the lady answering the phone. She was very rude, short and condescending. Good thing is my doctor also gave me another dr's number to call.

The first and last time I will be going to Dr. Mertz! Scheduled an appointment to see him and ended up seeing the nurse practitioner instead. After speaking to her regarding my symptoms she says I may need to have fluid removed from my belly or have an increase in medication to help get rid of some of the fluid that is accumulating. She tells me she will go check with Dr. Mertz and see what he wants to do. After waiting for nearly 30 minutes, the NURSE comes in and all she says is that an ultrasound has been scheduled. Clearly the nurse practitioner could see that I was very uncomfortable and was short of breath hence the reason she said one of two things would happen. Either Dr. Mettz will want to have the fluid removed manually or he will want to increase my medication. Well I never got an answer regarding this. I didn’t get to see Dr. Mertz himself and the nurse practitioner never came back to give me an answer. Obviously the medication isn’t helping with my symptoms but your telling me I should continue taking my medication as prescribed knowing it’s no use and aside from that I have to wait another 10 days in pain and discomfort before the scheduled ultrasound all to tell me what I already know. I made sure to tell the nurse that I was very unpleased with my visit and that I was leaving feeling very upset. She said she would page the doctor and call me with an answer. Was in the hospital yesterday as an outpatient. Had my pancreas checked with scope and they took good care of me. This is my second year of having the procedure done. I very much recommend him.

Rate the Dr, Not Customer Service or Staff! He is one of the best GI Dr's in the state. You will always encounter issues when everyone needs to get into the best. You may see a PA because he is trying to help as many patients as possible. Don't rate his personality or lack of time to be social with you. He is highly intelligent and very, very good at what he does. If you have life threatening diseases or want to find a cure, this is your guy. If you want someone to listen to you for an hour and treat you like a king or queen in the waiting room because you are their only patient, then I guess that is the grading scale most people use for 5 stars. I never write reviews, but when I saw how low his reviews are, it's a shame that some people may disregard a Doctor that could potential save their life for some pansy that didn't get the warm fuzzies when they visited his office. I wouldn't recommend this doctor at all. Condescending isn't even the word, he is just a rude doctor who thinks anyone who isn't a doctor is beneath him, always in a hurry. Really doesn't care about his patients as you can see from the gentlemen he told in these comments, I learned from your daughter. He has given nothing but rude answers to my family while my brother has been ill. If I could give you a minus score I would. From a sister who loves her brother very much

Dr Mertz always listens intently and shows genuine interest in our conservations about my health and the decisions that follow. Questions are always answered fully, he’s never condescending, even when I ask a question I should know the answer to. I trust him completely. Additionally, Stephanie is a very important part of this practice. She gives excellent care, always returns calls as soon as possible, & while ALL staff are great, Stephanie definitely has a heart for making you feel important!

Dr. Mertz is a thorough, kind and caring doctor. He always takes the time to answer our questions and never makes us feel rushed. His office staff is great too, Stephanie is always kinds and helpful and always called us back in a timely manner..

My husband passed of pancreatic cancer. Originally diagnosed with small pseudocyst in tip of pancreas and told it was no big deal. After getting paperwork from hospital saying possible adenocarcinoma, we asked for CT as Mayo Clinic said scan every month for growth and to remove if growing. It had grown slightly, but assured it was just a different angle. Next months CT had been canceled when we arrived. Two more scans showed growth. Surgery revealed cancer and given 3 mos to live! Devastated.

Mertz misdiagnosed my daughter. He told her she was just constipated and should take laxatives and an enema. The next day, we took her to the ER because she was in such pain. After a scan, a colon blockage was found. Mertz was so certain the blockage was Crohn's disease and placed a stent into the mass. The stent perforated her colon. The mass was NOT Crohn's but was CANCER! The perforation caused her to become septic, almost die, and cancer cells released into her abdomen! DO NOT GO TO MERTZ!!!

I just arrived home after having my second procedure with Dr. Mertz. Dr. Mertz was recommended by my primary care provider so I switched to Mertz about 4 1/2 years ago. I did research on Mertz before I went the first time, and he is literally one of the best in his field. I had no problem getting additional information after the first procedure and had my second with him this morning. Following my procedure, he met with my wife and I and took the time to explain his findings.

Definitely not who I recommend. He just gives me more medicine that I've already tried before and I've told him that and he doesn't seem to care.

He is a fabulous doctor, very knowledgeable and informative. The Office staff was kind and courteous and short wait times!

I am extremely happy that my husband and I chose to see Dr. Mertz. He explained, in detail, what my husband needed to do and was very kind and took the time with both my husband and myself. I definitely recommend Dr. Mertz.

Wish I could leave 0 stars. This was a horrible experience. Dr. Mertz was condescending and just plain rude. Not to mention I waited 1 hour and 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment time to see Dr. Mertz. He barely said more than 5 words to me...explained nothing, didn't answer my questions..seemed in a hurry to get home for the day. If you want healers for gastrointestinal issues, I left crying and feeling defeated-- like I will never have a solution answer to my problem.

My husband flew to Houston for the week, once again without medication. Why? Because Dr. Mertz office cannot handle getting a 90 day supply from a mail pharmacy. This happens consistently. If you are in a flare, near death or in crisis, Dr. Mertz is the man. If it is the maintenance of your disease, his office personnel make me say, "Go elsewhere." I was on the road in Kansas City when I noticed some alarming symptoms and called Dr. Mertz late on a Thursday afternoon. I found Dr. Howard Mertz to be in a hurry, to move on to his next patient or whatever his agenda was. I found him to be very condescending. He failed to explain to me what my test results were. He gave me two prescriptions one of which I researched on the internet and found the drug was used for seizures and neuropathy of which I had neither. He also gave me a prescription for pain pills and sent me on my way. No, I would not recommend this doctor.

I like Dr. Mertz but their office is unorganized and when you get a message on your phone regarding possible alarming test results and you call back at 8am the next morning, you expect a call back by the end of the day explaining the results... right? Nope, not there, cause if its a Friday morning that you call.. apparently you will be forced to wait an entire weekend before you get a god damned call back (if I even get that call) so now I get to wait all weekend and stress out about these results. Horrible unprofessional-ism...and completely unethical. You call the answering service and they are useless. Not happy about this AT ALL. Will be switching dr's. I just got home from an appointment with Dr. Mertz'' physician assistant and her resident. I felt totally let down. I received no answers as to why my body is reacting the way it is and why they are calling it acid reflux and not ulcers or any answers. They immediately wanted to schedule a "Bravo" which I didn't know what it was till I asked a thousand questions. When I did realize what it was, they offered no alternative but a surgery called "Nissen Fundiplication" which I'm still not sure what it does for me or what the complications are. I asked but didn't get any answers. Basically his office is "It is our way or the highway and get out of our way". Not very courteous or patient friendly. I was clearly scared to death going in but they didn't care. Now I wait for a surgical referral. I hope that is better. Dr. Mertz has some work to do with his staff on patient care.
