William H Mcallister IV

Unfortunately, after my decompression surgery with Dr.McAllister I began having extreme headaches. When my primary care referred me to see him due to the severity, he yelled at me and my husband and told me there was no way this was caused by my chiari malformation surgery, and he said "Chiari Malformation is CURED with this surgery". Unfortunately, that is 100% FALSE information that has been proven in multiple studies. Chiari decompression surgery is NOT a cure, it is a way to relieve symptoms. Unfortunately, Chiari malformation is often comorbid with hypermobility syndrome, which can alter the surgery healing process. Dr.McAllister did not do any preventative checks for hypermobility, he also never did a follow up CT until 2 years after the surgery and those were by my request. Although two doctors and two different scans informed me the chiari malformation was still there and the surgery showed only slight improvement, Dr.McAllister was adamant that he cured it. I am now dealing with side effects as a 29-year-old, bed ridden patient. Previous Review: Really awesome doctor. Had a brain surgery done by him for chiari malformation. The surgery was very successful and recovery was also great considering the surgery! I would say staff in the hospital after surgery isn't very knowledgeable. I didn't get any discharge instructions regarding care for the wound. Had Dr.McAllister not discussed it with my husband and I prior to the surgery we would not have known what to do. I also think Dr.McAllister would do well in a little bit more research regarding chiari malformation. Many times he focused on headaches as the main symptom, when in fact, headaches were my last symptom. Chairi can cause numerous symptoms ranging from stomach issues to head and neurological issues. I had everything from nausea to tremors to nerve pain in my legs. There are quite a few medical studies on symptoms regarding chiari! Overall, great doctor. He actually did take the time to hear you out and explain if you needed explanations. He's also a funny guy, but very to the point.

Super great guy, straight forward and to the point when it came to deconstructing the options, pros/cons of each, and leading me through the process. 10/10 would let him cut me open again.

I was sent to him for a second opinion because I was not happy with the doctor I was seeing I wanted to stay within Riverside and go with the doctor that I was hoping could put aside the fact that I'm young compared to what they normally see for my issues since seeing him I was seen by my old neurosurgeon because I had to do a follow-up based on that and knowing now that I need surgery because things have gotten worse and I wanted to stay on my side of the water and with a better doctor they refuse to see me because I had a follow-up appointment with a doctor who had done my previous surgery that I don't want to stay with just feels extremely heartless that they don't want to take on patients that they could help knowing that somebody is having issues with a different doctor who is doing nothing for them clearly he don't care I was sent to him for a second opinion because I was not happy with the doctor I was seeing I wanted to stay within Riverside and go with the doctor that I was hoping could put aside the fact that I'm young compared to what they normally … More

The reason for my high rating is that he went into my back to basically correct the mess from two other surgeries! When I was completely healed I had no more pain and was able to live my life without having pain every second of my days. With my particular disease I’ll face other surgeries like those but Dr McAllister is THE only spinal surgeon I want preforming these surgeries because I trust him. And THAT in itself say a huge deal!

3 years after Dr Mcallister did a lumbar laminectomy on me, my back has gotten so bad I can barely move....after over 3 months pursuing an appointment with him he tells me there is nothing he can do? Since then have seen 3 other doctors and they all say a fusion surgery is needed, which I plan on having ASAP. Didn't/Don't understand his reluctance to do an additional surgery.....I would not recommend him.....there are other docs around!!

I had an appointment with him and I bought in the wrong MRI Disc. He sent in an intern to examine me. I never saw him, I later brought in the correct MRI and I was not able to be seen by him. He looked at the MRI and called me and told me a bunch of stuff and said that you probably won't understand what I'm talking about. I told him that I was having really bad pain and he never acted like he cared. He was very rude on the phone and told me that I should go back to my other Orthopedic doctor. I would never go back and see him again!

Dr. McAllister is a good surgeon but unfortunately he has a very incompetent and useless staff.

He fixed my back. I almost lost use of my left leg. Now I am great. Was the best thing I ever did. Great Dr.

Took me from being nearly blind with lightening shooting up my neck to continuing life. I can see. I can function. There is no price on that. This is the guy you want messing with your head if life sends you down that path.

Dr. W H. McAllister is the best Dr. I know he has operated on my back once, and he I trust will be doing it,again only He will be putting a raid with serw, I pray that Father God will give him insight , on what to do for me,Bless his mind, and hands, and team. My husband is 85 years old and had severe spinal stenosis and Dr.MCAllister was wonderful. Only in the hospital for 2 days with complete easy to understand instructions.Easy to talk to and answered his questions. Would highly recommend him

I was sent packing from his office after suffering from left ribcage pain/spasms and mid back debilitating spasms and he said he saw nothing in my films and tests ( those films we're all done by my Ortho and HE suggested I need a neurosergeon) Keep in mind I have already had 6 lumbar fusions! I found a new neurosurgeon in Norfolk and after he did extensive tests including a milogram , he immediately found the PROBLEMS! He will be fusing 2 in my neck next week and 2 weeks after that surgery he will go in my lumbar for a 6hr surgery to completely redo my lower back and add 2 more levels which are completely out of alignment and compressing my spinal cord which is causing my muscles to go haywire! He also said he was suspect of all these problems after reading all my films, the same films McAllister reviewed! He confirmed all his suspicions with the milogram and flexsion x- ray's and it was clear as a bell! My new neurologist said it will take some time and hard work to retrain my muscles but said I will swing that golf club again! I would steer clear of McAllister!!! To date my new doctor has fused my neck and 2 weeks later did an 8 hr surgery on my back to fix all! I am in a hip to shoulder brace for 3 mths and will then be in therapy to retrain my back muscles. The final results of my experience is very good. It was a very traumatic experience though. Took 2 surgeries to work. The nursing and support care was less than desirable. They need more staff and less materialistic upgrades. State of the art everything, beautiful facility but this would not be my hospital of choice.

I've trusted this Dr. with my life more than once. I owe this man more than I could ever express. So, a simple thank you.

The best decision I've ever made was to see Dr. Mcallister, after several years of extreme pain. He explained thoroughly what was going on with me, he also made sure that I understood his explanation, he was very attentive, so I felt comfortable to trust him with a very delicate surgery and thank God I did! He operated on my back about a month ago (L4-S1 Midline Lumbar Interbody Fusion) and now, I feel like new. No doubt that he is very good at what he does: My pain is gone!!! Thanks to his expertise, I am now able to have a normal life. During my stay at the hospital, he came to check up on my progress every morning and gave the necessary instructions when he saw that things needed to be changed. After I came home, I got a wellness call to ensure I was doing well. His office staff were also top notch. 10 Stars. Probably one of my most favorite, personable, caring and generally straight to the point doctors available in the area. There is seldom a long wait despite a busy practice. I have had issues others misdiagnosed or didn't diagnose at all that Dr. Mcallister has found and explained in great detail.

I would NEVER refer anyone to him! He is a pompous ass who treats you like a Dollar sign! He has 0 bedside manner! He spends 5 minutes with you and doesn't take the time to explain what's going on. My pain is not imaginary... I have had 7 back surgeries and we have now discovered 5 bulging discs in my thoracic and two in my neck. HIS tests show they are pinching nerves in the neck and the thoracic discs are compressing my spinal cord. His remedy.... nothing! He has his nurse call me to give me the results. After my second opinion, there are now several options to fix these problems, and new doctor is shocked McAllister says there's nothing there! I would NEVER refer anyone to him! I have tn which causes shockings in my face.....dr mcallister helped me. After 5 years5 surgery i can finally talk eat sneeze and yawn without crying or shocking....this man is my life saver he did awsome and saved me from a brain surgery......thanks to him and mrs jennifer im back to myself

Dr. Mcallister is an outstanding surgeon. He has performed two surgeries on my neck (10 yrs apart). He is very professional and compassionate. His staff were exceptional. I highly recommend his office.

Had a referral to see this doctor and only seen his nurse. Totally disrespectful and unprofessional. Although he only looked at my record and referral I'm sure my insurance will be billed as if I was seen by him. Supposed to go back after a few tests that were ordered but think I'm going to ask to be seen by a real professional.

I had a disc blow out and was pushing on my sciatic nerve I was recommended to Dr McAllister from my regular doctor I had quick appointments and he gave me my options and let me decide how we wanted to go and I decided on the surgery immediately after waking up from surgery I felt a hundred times better if anybody has a problem with this doctor then you got problems nice courteous and did an excellent job and the surgery he performed on me was a microdiscectomy.

Dr. McAllister is very direct but also is able to put you at ease. He told me I had a benign tumor on my spine but was extremely confident that it could be removed and I would have no limitations after surgery (except normal recovery time). He was prompt with my appointments and very reassuring to my family and myself in the hospital after the surgery. Great personality and even better surgeon!

He is a great neurosurgeon. He analyzed my problem, made recommendations, and performed the surgery. I am 100% better!!! I would recommend him to anyone looking for an outstanding surgeon.

He has no empathy for his patients he used me for target practice messed my body up degraded me than dismissed me from his practice I trusted this man and he though nothing of me left me disfigured and passed me to his colleague their comes a time when you stop being a Doctor politically correct and have compassion for those who entrusted in him their never was any from him its all about the color of skin and insurance with him I pray that none of his love ones suffer as I have with this man.

In early 2012, I developed a condition where I was painfully being shocked from inside the left side of my head and out my ear. It made my throat feel like I had crushed glass in it. Causing me to gag, choke and vomit when I swallowed anything even water or my saliva. I was sent to an EENT that did all he could for almost 2 years. I was taking over $600 out of pocket meds monthly until finally the doctor said it was nothing else he could do I needed to see a neurosurgeon. For months surgeon to surgeon refused to take my case. Then one day, my doctor called and told me he found a neurosurgeon that was familiar with my problem. On my first visit to Dr. McAllister he told me if I allowed him to do Vascular Decompression Surgery on me that he could fix me. Being I thought I was dying anyway I had nothing to loose. On September 5th 2014 he open a section of my skull and fixed my problem. I awaken with none of the pain and problems. It's been 4 months and my only pain has been healing from surgery. Dr. McAllister was heaven sent. I thank GOD for him everyday. Always kind, polite and a listener. His staff is great as well. I now take no medication except Prilosec.
