Dr. Johnston was great throughout the entire process of my prostate removal, from pre-surgery planning and preparation through the post-surgery personal calls and follow-up. If you need to have yours removed, I highly recommend Dr. Johnston!

Age 63, very healthy. Diagnosed on 11-3-2022, prostate cancer, Gleason 9, stage 2. After reviewing all options we decided to have it surgically removed 2-8-2023. Dr Johnston's experience and prior results are second to none. His 2 decades of countless prostate operations give him a wealth of experience & technique. He may be one of the top "DaVinici" surgeons (technicians) in the Midwest. My recovery was painless and uneventful . I highly recommend him.... Still praying for long term positive results....

Dr. Johnston and crew removed my prostate in February 2022. My numbers and exams indicated this was necessary. After surgery I wore pads (diapers if forced to sit or drive for stretches of over 1 hour). After six weeks I have not used pads or diapers. I am active and outdoors most days and I don’t see any difference in urgency, stream or frequency than before the procedure other than to give a little more push to completely empty. As far a sexual function goes I advise you to do your homework and ask questions on: erection, orgasm, ejaculation, libido and tools. Yikes! Sometimes I have very small drips when I sneeze or pass gas by pushing. No big deal. Through the entire process I found Dr. Johnston clear and concise in regard to the information he needed to share with me, patient with my questions, friendly and is extremely helpful regarding follow-up, referrals and my quality of life. I consider him in the vanguard of modern medicine and patient interaction in his specialty.

I was the recipient of a high PSA score from an annual physical (that was less than annual in recent years - cautionary tale) and was referred to Dr. Johnston. I came up with multiple reasons for why it couldn't be prostate cancer, but the numbers don't lie and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis - prostate cancer. Dr. Johnston explained the options available along with the pros and cons of each, and my decision was for surgery. I did the needful to be in the best physical shape for surgery as well as to prepare for new realities, and the day of surgery went according to plan. I had one night in hospital and was walking 3000+ steps within 3 days of surgery, and I experienced no incontinence. You can do this - please listen to medical experts like Dr. Johnston who have your best medical outcomes in mind, versus your neighbor who has a buddy who knows a guy that somehow escaped the expected progression of this disease. You can do this, and Dr. Johnston is the doc to choose.

Dr Johnston and Staff were fantastic. It’s 4 1/2 weeks since my robotic prostatectomy and I have had no leakage or any other complications. I did start pelvic floor exercises at Neil Physical Therapy about a month before surgery. I was back to work after 10 days and participated in full workouts at gym after 4 weeks. Dr Johnston is very skilled and checked on me personally several times postoperatively.

Overall, the worst “doctor” I’ve ever seen. Poor listening skills, rushed and didn’t even review past records. In fact there was no review of my current health history either. Complete waste of my time and money. Rude and unprofessional office staff too. On top of it all, he over bills!

I was/am confidant that Dr. Johnston and his staff have my well being at the top of their to-do list. All the tests and procedures that I needed were well explained before and after they were executed. Scheduling, referrals, bloodwork and communications were prompt and easy to understand. I am pleased with my experience at Michigan Institute of Urology and Dr. Johnston

I found Dr. Johnston's staff to be incredibly unprofessional on my first visit to his office. Another couple were having some difficulty and the staff talked about them in my presence when they left. My husband was looking for a second opinion regarding his prostate cancer and found the results of the biopsy Dr. Johnston performed were in question, wanted a third reading, Dr. Johnston's office has refused to provide the slides so that we can get a third reading.

Had my first visit with Dr. Johnston today and was pleasantly surprised. His manner was questioning, with specificity, but friendly. He appears to know what he is about and his offices were clean, neat and well organized. Refreshing, considering the last two urologists I have visited this year. This meeting was to allow the Dr. to evaluate my needs and his direction to further investigate my condition. To date, I am very pleased with my selection, this could easily go to a five? His few staff that I met today were also well trained and very courteous. 180* from the last two! Time will tell. My recently retired urologist was a true Gem and that's what prompted my search.

Dr Johnston is wonderful. After being diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on my right kidney. I was recommended to Dr Johnston for a consultation. I had previously known Dr Johnston because he had operated on my husband for prostate cancer. I was relieved to know that he could treat my kidney issue as well. It is very important to trust your surgeon, and I had trust in Dr. Johnston. He was able to remove my tumor and my kidney is on the mend.

Rudest most unprofessional Dr ever. His office didn’t send preauthorization for insurance twice, causing missed appointments. As a cancer patient timeliness is important. Then once the tests were completed, couldn’t get the results. Had to schedule an office visit for one and for the other asked about results during a procedure and he informed me he didn’t have time to discuss my results and to make another appointment. Find a different doctor.

This is the worst practice I have ever dealt with. Staff didn’t summit pre-auth until night before scan. Even though they were informed about the appt 3 weeks prior. Dr ordered a test for my husband and then wouldn’t deal with blue cross to get the test approved which was a phone call and is something many insurance carriers request. Never got a call back from the supervisor I was dealing to give a second option. No communication from them at all. I guess they thought we would just go away. Dr and staff super unprofessional and uncaring. I wouldn’t let my goldfish be under this physicians care.

I was referred to Dr. Johnston by an associate physician in the Michigan Institute of Urology. For several years, I suffered multiple urinary tract infections. After being diagnosed with a non-functioning extra utterer, Dr. Johnston's special skills were recommended for a delicate surgical removal of the useless organ. While his practice generally focuses on male urinary problems, he gladly accepted the challenge of my particularly female issue. His unique expertise in removing the third utterer resulted in my complete eradication of UTIs. He said I'd be a little sore and achey and I was a little sore and achey. There just are not enough words to express my appreciation for his skill, manner, and post-surgery care. He treated me like family, not as another case number.

When it comes to having your prostate removed, Dr. Johnston III is your guy. It’s been over 3 years since my prostatectomy and I am doing fine. My PSA is undetectable, I was only incontinent for maybe a couple of months, and I regained my sexual mojo shortly after that. He is committed to ensuring all side effects are manageable etc. I know that if you are facing treatment for prostate cancer, you are frightened of what the outcome may be. I feel that Dr. J is your best choice for having a positive experience with the surgery and the recovery period. After I had my surgery, I was talking with a representative from Intuitive Inc., the company that manufactures the Da Vinci robot. He asked me who performed my surgery and when I told him it was Dr. Johnston, his response was, “you chose wisely”.

I was immediately impressed with Dr. Johnston during our introductory visit when he took almost a full hour to explain everything and answered all of our questions. He did not push surgery, he talked about the pros and cons and made sure we were comfortable with not only the surgical process but the recovery process as well. The robotic surgery was highly successful. The catheter was removed 8 days after surgery. The first 2 nights, I woke up an average of 2 times a night to pee. After that, I was able to sleep 7 hours straight before needing to get up. After 4 weeks, I did not need to wear a pad at all during the night. 3 weeks after surgery I was mowing the lawn and doing simple lawn care. 5 weeks after surgery I was cutting wood and moving landscape boulders. I do have some leakage during this type of activity, but no leakage when sitting, except with a sneeze. I would highly recommend discussing your specific situation with Dr. Johnston.

Dr. Johnston treated me recently for Renal cell carcinoma on my left kidney. The diagnosis was sudden and unexpected, and required a nephrectomy to remove the mass and the affected kidney. I’m a 37 year old healthy female, so this was something I was not prepared for. I was obviously very nervous and had a ton of questions, and Dr. Johnston made the entire experience feel positive for me. He answered my questions, he provided his advice, and I feel very fortunate to have had him perform my robotic laparoscopic surgery. He’s not only an extremely gifted and skilled surgeon, but he has a wonderful bedside manner. I was treated like family, and would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. William K. Johnston III, who performed the da Vinci Robotic Surgery, to remove my prostate is top tier at this. He does a couple hundred of these a year. He is well prepared to handle any unforeseen contingency's that may be found while performing this surgery. It is readily apparent that he has confidence and a strong passion for his work. His focus is not just on removing the cancerous prostate to save your life, put to carefully spare the nerves and reconnection of the urethra to minimize recovery time of erectile and incontinence functions. The follow up care is extraordinary. A great listener and communicator, you couldn't hope to have a better or more skilled doctor for this operation.

He's a competent surgeon, but expect to be treated badly, especially if you're a woman. Bedside manner ranged from condescending to insulting to downright sexist. As a guy, I sometimes don't see it, but his behavior was SO misogynistic and demeaning it was impossible to miss. Today was the last straw. After waiting over an hour today for a 30 second consult, I politely asked if we could do the next one over the phone, since we had waited so long. We were belittled, lectured about how medicine worked, accused of not liking him (huh?) and told we should be grateful to wait an hour to see him because so few people could do what he did. Switching doctors is a headache, but I won't be going back. He staff was totally unsurprised when we said we wanted to file a complaint, and had the number and websites ready at hand to assist us. That really says it all, doesn't it? I'm sure you can find a qualified surgeon who won't insult you along the way.

My uncle, who is 93 yrs. old, has been seeing Dr. Johnston for years. He's unable to drive, so I've been taking him to all his appointments. About a year ago, I hired a caretaker that now takes him, and she had previously taken him without any issue. My uncle recently acquired a severe urinary track infection that after 3 rounds of antibiotics, his primary doctor finally referred him to his urologist. When my caretaker showed up with my uncle, they refused to see him, due to a recent change in their policy. I was required to send them paperwork stating that I was the Power of Attorney over my uncle's care, and a signed letter giving my permission for the caretaker to bring him. The office gave us no prior notice that this new policy was in place, even though they knew that he had a scheduled appointment and would need to be seen! At 93 yrs. old, it's extremely challenging for my uncle to be able to get out to the doctor, and then for them to wait until he's there to notify us of a policy change is absolutely ridiculous! Due to his difficulty with getting out, I asked for a specimen cup last week, after he was done with his antibiotics, so I could bring them back a sample to ensure that the infection was completely gone. The office provided me with a sample cup, but when the caretaker went there today to drop off the sample, they trashed the sample and stated that there was a change in policy, and they no longer take samples; he would have to come in and be seen. Then why give me the sample cup?! The lack of sympathy for their patients and extreme lack of communication is appalling at this office!
