Vikas Patel

I had a spinal fusion from T10 to Pelvis a year ago to straighten scoliosis and clean out spinal stenosis. After many years of back pain and sciatica I am pain free and feel like I have a new lease on life. I am stronger and more active than I have been in years. Dr. Patel is highly skilled, extremely knowledgeable, and very compassionate. I think he is the best of the best! I feel very fortunate that he is my doctor.

Dr. Patel was the only spine surgeon who asked what I wanted from surgery besides pain relief. WE then decided which type of cervical spine surgery was most appropriate for me. He did such an amazing job on my neck that when I needed lumbar spine surgery I didn’t need to search elsewhere. I wouldn’t let any other surgeon operate on me. His bedside manner is amazing, as is his NP, Susan Estes.

I think dr Patel is the best spine surgeon in Denver. I could not walk before he operated on me and 6 weeks later I'm walking a mile a day with no pain. He put two coflex devices in my back and the pain was gone when I woke up from surgery.He is the best

I had a disc replacement done by Dr. Patel in 2015. I could not stand or sit for more than 30 minutes before surgery. He gave me my options between a fusion and a replacement but pushed me to do the replacement as I’m so young and I have degenerative disc disease and he didn’t want my other discs to fail. It has been 6 years since my surgery and I am more active then I have ever been. I rock climb and hike and am always outside without pain. I can not thank him and his incredible team enough. After experiencing a failed C1-C2 fusion that resulted in one screw in my spinal column and another screw in my vertebral column, I was faced with a decision of wearing a cervical hard collar for there remainder of my life, or a revision surgery. The revision surgery involved removing the original hardware and fusing C1-C4. The complexity of the surgery required Dr. Patel and one of his partners. The issue of removing the screws was of major concern since there was a significant possibility of total or partial paralysis, total or partial brain stroke, as well as bleeding out. After speaking to Dr. Patel and understanding the risk versus reward situation, I elected the surgical revision and placed my faith in Dr. Patel. This resulted in one of the best medical decisions I have made. I am 12 weeks post-op and have moved from a hard collar to the soft collar and continue to improve. A skilled orthopedic neurologist is difficult enough to find, but one with a personality is even more difficult to find. Last month, I went through my 2d major spinal surgery with Dr. Vikas Patel. The first, Oct 2011, was a 12 hour surgery in my lower spine (lumbar/sacrum) area involving both anterior and posterior extensive work which included cadaver bone implants and spacers, followed by fusion with bolts and rods. Within 4-6 weeks of this surgery I was back outdoors hunting, hiking, running, etc. with complete success from this total professional. Six weeks ago (Feb 2021) I was back in the operating room in the hands of this outstanding surgeon, Dr. Patel, this time focusing on the cervical area. It was an 8-hour operation with decompression, reconstruction, cadaver and spacer support; then posterior with fusion bolts & rods. With both operations Dr. Patel returned me to the active life style that I wanted and needed; to state the obvious, I trust Dr. Patel literally with my life. Dr Patel is a kind and caring surgeon. He has done three surgeries for me, all three good recoveries. The most recent is removing the lumbar fusion hardware. I am feeling great with less pain. I have moved out of state, he is worth the drive. His staff is excellent. I know I may need a cervical surgery in the future. I will be out to do it! He is attentive and answers all questions. Dr. Patel performed spinal fusion surgery last November. It has given me a new lease on life! I can walk without pain or numbness. I feel ten years younger. My activity level is way up. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I had a very successful microdiscectomy several years ago. I walked out of the hospital the same day and felt fantastic by the evening. It was great and would've likely lasted longer had my son not launched himself at me. I am currently 6 weeks out of a artificial disc replacement, and I can already tell the difference. Dr. Patel is a very skilled and knowledgeable surgeon, and his staff is top notch. I couldn't recommend him more.

Dr. Patel is an excellent surgeon. I had neck surgery and my daughter had back surgery with Dr. Patel and both turned out great. He has such a confidence about him you always feel your in good hands!

Have scoliosis - triple curve with rotation of spine. Dr. Patel did an amazing job of reducing the curvature degrees. Unfortunately, both rods failed after five years. Dr. Patel did an amazing job of repairing the broken rods, adding two additional rods and more robust bone graft. I would recommend Dr. Patel and his entire team to anyone suffering from a complex back situation.

I waited to have Dr Patel do my L4/L5 fusion surgery. I am absolutely pleased with the outcome and cannot recommend highly enough Dr. Patel, and importantly, his pre-op, during and post-op team. They are excellent!!!!

Now 10 months post -op , I am so happy we chose Patel's team- my outcome was better than expected, and now playing golf 3 times weekly. Dr Patel and his staff are the most professional and caring healthcare people I ever have ever dealt with. He fixed my back after another surgeon did a botched surgery on me. I had a 9 hour surgery with Dr Patel and Dr Cain, together they put my back together after another surgeon trashed it. His bedside manner is wonderful and he explains things in a way you can understand. This team will get you through your recovery. 56 year old USA Track and Field Masters pole vaulter. Discs between L2/3 and L3/4 were both blocking path of spinal column causing pain at L5/S1. Unable to continue vaulting or swing a golf club. Dr. Patel started with X-rays followed by an MRI. This was followed up with injections over several months starting with L5/S1, then L2/3 and L3/4 and finally the SI joints. The only shots that proved beneficial were L2/3, L3/4. Dr. Patel recommended a spinal laminectomy(decompression) surgery at L2-L4. Surgery was accomplished December 13, 2019 and after six weeks I am feeling tremendous. Throughout the months of visits, injections, MRI's and finally surgery I was always treated with great respect, courtesy and friendliness. The UCHealth app for my phone was a breeze to use. I had spine surgery from Dr. Patel and his excellent team on September 13, 2019. He and his team were excellent and I would confidently recommend anyone needing surgery to them My operation was to open up a channel where nerves exited my lower lumbar and install two coflex spreaders. After living with chronic debilitating back pain for a long time, my choice to be in Dr. Patel's care was the best decision I ever made. We have seen Dr. Patel in person every time we have been to his office. This comment does not reflect the experience my husband and I have had with Dr. Patel or his staff. Have we had to wait sometimes? Yes. This is administrative, but not a reflection of Dr. Patel's skill as a spine surgeon. Take a star away for this, perhaps, but we have seen him and his NP in person each and every time.

3 years ago, Dr. Patel relieved my wife of her lower back pain that was shooting down her leg, 2 years ago, he performed a fusion of the neck region eliminating pain while straightening out her spine. A month ago, he worked on my L4, L5 and S1, inserting a co-flex device that has incredibly eliminated a pain that I have co-existed with for the last 45 years, never thinking that a calf pain would be caused by the spine. He is an artist in his own right and one of the top spine surgeons in the country. We travel from Naples, FL for him to perform his effort.

I would highly recommend Dr. Patel, Susie Estes and his entire staff. From my initial appointment to procedures, surgery and post-op visit, my experience with he and his staff was so positive. He and Susie Estes listened and then explained all of my options to solve my back issues. I had so much confidence in him and I am so very happy to have my life back. I just went through an Ifuse procedure with my SI joint and I couldn’t be happier. Dr patel’s bedside manner is one of the best I’ve seen. Dr. Patel disrespects his patients by not appearing in-person to speak with them after they have waited for a lengthy period to see him. He speaks only through the resident who happens to be on duty that day. See any orthopedic surgeon except him.

From my first appointment to my six month post op I have had nothing but an awesome experience. I felt the minute I met him I trusted and could work with this doctor. Telling me all the good, the bad and the ugly of this very huge staged spine surgery he made sure I had full understanding before signing the paper. He and his team went above and beyond to guide me on the path. All is looking good and I am on target for six month post op. Thank you Dr. Patel.

I am very impressed with Dr. Patel and Susie Estes. Dr. Patel is kind and listens when you speak, whereas other Drs I've seen have either cut me off or interrupted continuously. I feel that he genuinely cares for his patients, which is hard to come by. Susie Estes is also extremely smart, kind and genuine with a great sense of humor! I will recommend anyone with spine issues to see this wonderful medical team.

Dr. Patel explains and listens better than almost any doctor, and I felt that I could trust him. The radiologist said that everyone in the department sent their family members to see him. He ended up doing a spinal fusion on me and three years later, it is still working beautifully. The recovery was long an painful, just a heads up. Getting in to see him took a long time. I recommended Dr. Patel to a friend with complicated health issues, and she was very happy with his treatment.

There are absolutely no words to describe the incompetence and unprofessionalism of Dr. Vikas Patel and his staff. He lacks proper judgement, listening skills, and compassion. His lack of attention and the lack of follow through by his nurse coordinator, Emily Senn, leads to critical information being lost, test results not being read, and appropriate care not provided. There are no systems in place to prevent catastrophic outcomes for his patients. I have never seen anything like it. Beware.

Dr. Patel, on the first visit, diagnosed my wife's back pain as actually more symptomatic of sacral-illiac joint pain. His office arranged for a non-steroidal injection the next day to confirm if her pain was emanating from there. The test conclusively showed that Dr. Patel was correct. The doctors at a major clinic in Vail had been telling my wife for over two years that her pain was all back related and that surgery was the only answer.

I am so personally grateful for the amazing work this physician and his team has done for myself, husband, brother, best friend, patients I sent in the past when I worked in Family practice as an MA. I had been through 3 previous neck surgeries. The third was botched by a screw being placed in my disc space. Dr. Patel did an 11 hour 6 level front and back redo surgery. It was a difficult recovery but I cannot imagine where I'd be without him and his assistant Susan Estes,NP.

He saved my mom's life. She had a broken neck C2. He was just so nice and helped so much. He was able to fuse the neck.
