Dr. Upshur M Spencer

Spencer uses Medtronic implants for spinal fusion surgeries. The thing is, these implants are temporary and not designed to be left in the body after fusion -- but he didn’t tell us that. He did a major, aggressive fusion on me when I was 14. I developed serious chronic pain and fatigue and Spencer denied there was anything wrong with me. In the end, I was forced to have another major surgery to have the implants removed and it turned out because these TEMPORARY implants had been left in my body, I was having a severe necrotic reaction -- my flesh had rotted and died inside of me! The implants that I was told would last a lifetime were corroded and bent. I have serious concerns about Spencer’s motivations and competency. Please, do not send loved ones to this man and always seek a second opinion.

Dr. Spencer has many reports of very impatient and condescending. Poor bedside manner. It is reported he asks questions but fails not listen to the answers . He does, however have a pattern of showing complete disregard to the professional opions of other medical professionals such as radiologist and other top orthopedic physicians opinion. He very apparently looks down on those with federal insurance such as Medicaid or Medicare. Avoid this provider!!!!

Not only is Dr. Spencer brilliant, he's empathetic and kind, with just a bit of humor too! I honestly cannot say enough wonderful things about him. I struggled with back problems for years and he supported me through them all. Eventually I did need surgery and even an anesthesiologist friend of mine at Providence stated if she needed back surgery there was only one surgeon she would consider here in Alaska and that was Dr. Spencer. So I had the surgery and am doing awesome!

Dr. Spencer did a Spinal Fusion on my 14 year old son and did a fantasic job. My son healed quickly and he always felt comfortable with Dr. Spencer and safe. We as a family felt like our son was in good hands, and he was. Thanks to Dr. Spencer and his great team of nurses in the pediatric ICU that cared for him. He is healing STRONG !!!!!!!

Mom, 78, broke her arm. Dr Spencer was on call. Surgery was done quickly and well and recovery was strong. Bedside manner and availability great. Explained risks well.
