Dr. Thomas E. Unger

I saw Dr Unger twice. The first time he listened to me but gave no advice except a book to read. The second time I gave my book report. I did not go back! On the plus side he recommended an app for meditation which I now use daily.

He is very insightful and knowledgeable. He gave me lifelong resources and thought me skills that I carried in my life long after my therapies ended and Im grateful and appreciates his teaching almost everyday. He is a therapist who teaches you how to fish rather than giving you the fish. This might be challenging at first but with patience and commitment it will go a long way and extends beyond the current problems that you are trying to solve. Nothing good in life comes without hard work.

There are definitely better ways to administer CBT and ACT. While he provides decent resources, that's about all that is helpful about his practice. He doesn't care about the therapeutic relationship at all. He interrupts often and doesn't give much space for you to talk. The whole practice is oriented around you preparing questions about the workbook assignments and him giving advice and long-winded explanations that are usually pretty patronizing. Sessions rarely deviate from this structure and it all feels incredibly impersonal. On top of this, he is very defensive and does not solicit feedback. Maybe some clients take to this style, but I can't imagine many who would. He's smart and generally a nice guy, but has an ego, big blind spots, and is clearly in the wrong job.

He understands the dynamics of your problem behavior or feelings then you plan with him how to get over it . I got off tons of medications this way. He remembers what your plan was so next time you see him he checks to see what you've done about it. Solutions! He knows how to solve things.

Dr Unger is a good listener. He offers clear,concrete suggestions about how to change ones unhealthy thought patterns . If he suggests a book that will better explain how to achieve goals of reducing anxiety, fear, depression ,etc, he literally hands you the book. Dr Unger teaches you how to accept your thought and to move on to mindfully think and live in the present.
