Reviews for Dr. Thomas J Umstead
Dr.Umstead is responsible for the wrongful death of not only my infant but also another woman’s I met in recovery. If you are looking for advice please for the safety of you and your unborn child choose another obstetrician. I only wish I had. I would be sharing my life with her instead of mourning her preventable death.

Dr. Umstead has NO rights to deliver at ANY hospital. My sister was seeing him for her second pregnancy, and when she went into labor he was no where to be found. Once she arrived at the hospital they informed her that he has no right at any hospital and that a different doctor, one she has never met, will be delivering her baby. She is now 3 weeks postpartum, and he again is no where to be found. She has been trying to get ahold of him to send in paperwork for her maternity leave (she won’t get paid until he does) and he will not send it or get back to her. And NOW she has been in so much pain, swelling, and bruising with her breast and can’t get ahold of him!! I’ve even tried calling and there is no answer. She has tried seeking out other doctors and they tell her to get ahold of Dr. Umstead because she is still under 6weeks postpartum. This has become a nightmare, and my hope is to save another soon to be mother from experiencing this. Dr. Umstead has NO rights to deliver at ANY hospital. Back in the day, 25 years ago this month, Dr. Umstead found a tumor during my yearly exam, immediately sent me for follow up scans, and talked at length to me, explaining that a hysterectomy (at age 42), provided I was done having children at that time, was necessary. He performed the surgery, found ovarian cancer, intact, not spread, and saved my life from a threatening tumor that would've have only grown and spread. Thanks, Dr. U. for the past 25 years....I now have grandchildren, am healthy and always credit you for saving my life!
Dr. Umstead was the BEST OBGYN! You will wait... but HIM AND HIS STAFF ARE WELL WORTH IT! He is knowledgeable, he takes his time (not clinic-like) and answers your questions. He has a dry sense of humor which was a huge PLUS for me! P. S. He did the best circumcisions. My son was healed in less than a week and it was done perfectly!
Dr Umstead has NO privileges to deliver babies at ANY local hospitals. He will tell you he delivers at a hospital in Spring Hill/Brooksville, but he does not. He tells patients that he is not "on call" that day at the hospital which is a lie. Horrible to do this to patients. Simply ask him where he delivers and then call that hospital he tells you and they will verify he doesn't go there. Dr Umstead has NO privileges to deliver babies at ANY local hospitals. Dr Umstead was very professional and helpful. He took the time to explain everything I needed to know. Very good experience.
Dr. Umstead is the ONLY doctor I would trust to deliver my babies. After 2 traumatic births, a misdiagnosis that almost lead to a pressured abortion of my perfectly healthy baby, and being told that my body would never be able to birth a baby naturally, I have had THREE successful VBAC’s with Dr. Umstead. His knowledge, confidence, and bedside manner are unparalleled. He cares deeply about both patient and baby. I am so grateful we found him before being forced into another C-section. Bait and switch not a vbac friendly doctor. Maybe if you are okay with going for a cesarean or if you go into labor naturally he is good, but beware! And he is not very friendly. Make you feel like an idiot.

I would only recommend Dr. Umstead as your maternity Doctor. I want someone who knows wth he is talking about and doing, which is Dr. Umstead. He is nice and to the point which was refreshing. Doesn't have you completely confused after like most doctors.
I wish I could give him no stars! Horrible bed side manner. Talks down to you and makes you feel insignificant.
Dr. Umstead was my OBGYN for my oldest son (he's 4). When I first saw him I was about 7 or 8 months along and at first I didn't like him because I thought he was rude and very standoffish. I kept going to see him though and the more I saw him, the better I felt because I understood where he was coming from, and I also finally understood his sense of humor because he and I share the same sense of humor. Very dry. During every appointment he always kept it professional and never went off topic. At the last visit before I had my son he made a comment to me "see you at the hospital." At first I didn't understand why he said that but now I do. It was a few days before my next appointment and I had gone into labor! Went to the hospital and I overheard them say that they were probably just going to send me home because for some reason I only had two contractions the entire car ride there. They got me monitored and checked me and said that they would be keeping me because I was dilated to a 5! Dr. Umstead was in the delivery room with me and I was on the phone with my sister when things started to go south. The nurses kept on moving things around so I told my sister I had to go because something wasn't right. I asked the nurses what was going on and they lost my sons heart rate for nearly 10 minutes! Dr. Umstead told me that if they hadn't found it in time then they would've done an emergency c section. I vaguely remember overhearing one of the nurses trying to push the others for a c section but they all said no, to give it more time. They asked me if I wanted the epidural and I told them no. They didn't push me into getting it either which was a HUGE relief that they respected my decision. Eventually I wound up getting the epidural and it was very last minute as I was dilated to an 8 or 9 at that point. The epidural made things so much easier! Then came time to push and I didn't feel like I pushed for that long but dr. Umstead said that I pushed for 2 hours! Whew! He explained to me that if I would've waited another hour then I would've had to have an emergency c section. So that's twice that I couldve had to have a c section! But during the pushing process he was absolutely fantastic! When the placenta passed he sang a little song about it. Lol I don't remember if he ever checked up on me afterwards and I really don't care. He was an amazing doctor and he's not afraid to tell it like it is! What I like about Dr. Umstead is that unlike other doctors, he is not rushing to get you into surgery. Other docs told me that I needed a hysterectomy due to very large fibroids. He said that is not true and the fibroids are small and would likely shrink in Menopause. Today he looked at the ultrasound and sure enough he was right! They have shrunk! Great staff too! Dr.umstead delivered both of my daughters and I had an absolutely wonderful experience both times around, our first daughter was born in August of 2009. I was a very young new mom scared not knowing what or where to start and Dr Umstead and his entire stuff did nothing, but help guide me through my pregnancy and always addressed any all my concerns so it was obviously a no brainer come 2012 for our second daughter to use Dr.Umstead and his team. It was of course another amazing accommodating comforting experience he even moved me from one room I was in to the exact same room we delivered our first daughter in just because I told him it seemed like good luck! always so kind and understanding with all my questions never once was I ever brushed off or cut off it’s truly so shocking to see some of these comments on here...I don’t usually write too many reviews, but I felt the need to share my two experiences with Dr.Umstead and his staff I would highly recommend him in fact because I felt so safe with him I encouraged my sister to use him as well for her son and she also had an amazing safe experience with the entire staff I can confidently say I have nothing but great things to say about him And his team all great people. I had my first daughter with Dr. Umstead. He saved her life during delivery as she had the umbilical cord tied tightly around her neck. He was very pleasant as were his staff in every visit. He is more direct than many people and says things as they are which I really appreciated as a first time mom. Would go back to him no questions asked!
It was awful, i went in for a PAP smear and this was on a Thursday. The doctor told me they would call me by Monday at the latest with results. The people who work in this office are liars, and they have a nurse named Carol that works for them and if you desire to keep your information private do not deal with these people. They are hippa law violators. The nurse commuted the act on multiple occasions and attempted to steal my son.
Worst doctors visit ever. I was 18 going in for answers about a concerning lump. The receptionist was friendly until she saw I was a Medcaid patient (my parents are absent and I cannot afford better healthcare). When it came time for Dr. Umstead to enter the room, he came in without a word. He immediately sat down and inserted the speculum with no warning. Still, no words were spoken. He was down there very briefly, sat up said it was probably a cyst, and then left the room. I was mortified. While waiting for the nurse, I hear Dr. Umstead and the nurse talking about how I'm a Medicaid patient and to get me out of there as quick as she can because they weren't going to make any money and I was a waste of time. I waited for the nurse, then when she finished I left as soon as I could. I cried the whole way home, feeling violated, humiliated and embarrassed. I share this so maybe it'll help someone to avoid the same experience. Worst doctors visit ever. I was 18 going in for answers about a concerning lump. Good doctor.
I've been going to Umstead for about 14 years now. He delivered both of my daughters. I've always enjoyed him & his funny sense of humor & his staff. :)
He delivered my 3 boys after my daughter was born Via Cesarion from another Obstetrician. I always had an amazing experience with him in the office never rushed me and has amazing bedside manner
Absolutely the most amazing doctor. Delivered my first baby and I'm currently 34 weeks and hes been seeing me this whole pregnancy also. Absolutely love love him!!
Dr Umstead is amazing he delivered both my babies and now the 3rd and he saved my second daughters life although he does not sugar coat things......which I prefer he is stern but honest he cares alot which some people might see at as him being rude but I can honestly say I will NEVER go ANYWHERE else
26 years and counting! I hope he doesn’t retire anytime soon. He has taken care of me for a very long time. He’s a very busy doctor, but has never steered me in the wrong direction and keeps it simple with the best advice. 3 grown children later and I still go back every year to him and his attentive staff!
A doctor who is willing to sit there and spend 10 minutes of his valuable time reviewing his medical books in order to verify his answer to one of your questions, is not displaying his ignorance, but is letting you know he is a GOOD doctor. Less interested in his opinion than he is in providing proper care to his patients. He is not one of those closed-minded stuffed shirts who only talk but dont listen. He listens to any concern and is a straight shooter. He is progressive and continually educates himself and improve. He doesnt always have time to make small-talk, (the office can get busy), but he truly does care. How rare is that these days?! So does his staff who support him. They bend over backwards for me, every time, trying to work with my insurance, schedule, financial concerns, and even personal concerns. His office manager, Carmen is a wonderful caring lady, always doing her best for patients who visit the clinic. Dr. Thomas Umstead is surely one of those doctors you truly miss when you no longer have them around. I feel lucky and blessed I still do. I moved away so I now have to drive an hour and a half to get there, but its totally worth it!! I hope he continues as my doctor, and my daughter's doctor as well, for as long as possible. I have had Dr Umstead as my gynecologist for 28 years. He’s the best. Delivered my son and I trust him with my health. Your in good hands with him. He was the only dr that was able to help a neighbor of mine have a child, After 8 miscarriages. He did a surgery to help her.

I switched my Dr. He has to much going on in his office to give you the time you deserve. He did nothing but an ultrasound my first visit. I remember having a full check up with my other kids!? I hear he's a good Dr but we all have our opinion.
Just left his office... I had the worst experience!!! Went in because I am in pain. Had ultrasound done at Trinity said I have uterine fibroid. He acted like he didn't believe me, I told him I was in pain. Heard him talking to someone outside the door saying that it's probably nothing... Did a women's exam which I'm in pain from now because of the pushing on my stomach. I signed a release form to get my results from ER... And I said so I came here for nothing because I didn't ask for the women's exam that I came because I'm in pain... He blew it off saying step by step process... So in the meantime what am I supposed to do? I can't take the pain much longer... He was a belittling old man. I had no trust with this doctor!!! he made me feel like I was below him.... Never been to such a rude doctor before... Very bad experience!!! Mind you, three weeks I had to wait to be seen by this POS!!! And I told the receptionist that I was in pain!!! Came home and scheduled another appointment with a new female doctor. Just left his office... I had the worst experience!!! Went in because I am in pain. Dr. Umstead is a terribly unprofessional Physician with horrible bedside manner! This Dr. did not say hello or introduce himself this being my initial visit. I had questions regarding an IUD and asked for advice for alternatives where he dismissed me, never made eye contact one time, and made a condescending joke about the advice I was seeking for an alternative to an IUD. I then decided to introduce myself as we never had met and I felt extremely uncomfortable that I would be having an exam with this Dr. so I figured I would lighten the air and introduce myself. He ignored my offer and when I asked his name he said "Dr. I am the only Dr in here. You should know my name, you called my office and wouldn't you know the Dr's name of the office"? Honestly his name is not too prevalent when you Google, it only says Florida Women's Care. I then said I will be leaving and told the front office not to bill me. Worst experience EVER at a doctor office!! I walk into my appointment, no one is at the front desk for 20 minutes! Then, they start calling people back. I'm still sitting waiting to even be acknowledged as a new patient, 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment. When one of the staff came out, I asked if it was normal practice to wait around for so long!? I finally got seen 48 minutes after my appointment time and then was told from the nurse or whatever she was, that she doesn't like to be disrespected in front of other patients. EXCUSE ME?!? I didn't know asking a question about how long it takes to be seen was disrespectful. Maybe if the staff actually did their job and let people know what was going on in the office and that the doctor wasn't even there!!!! I eventually cooled down, I know things happen and would want my doctor there too. We were advised to come back in about an hour because he would be back by then so we went to eat, didn't help that I was very hangry either. We came back after an hour and still waited for 45 min but knowing the situation it wasn't so bad. The staff was friendlier, especially since I wasn't so moody. Honestly, they are dealing with pregnant hormonal women!! You should ALWAYS be pleasant!! Finally saw the doctor, only for him to ask me 3x if I was pregnant and how far along I was. Once again, getting annoyed, I said you tell me, you're the doctor (after I advised from my calculation how far along I was). He then made it very clear that he did not want to see me as a patient stating that I'm too high risk for him. Said I had too much anxiety and because my first born was a heavier than normal weight for being 6 weeks early?!? He told me to go find another doctor and then walked out So after the wonder experience I had with the WHOLE visit, I let him know that he just contributed to my "anxiety". I would NEVER recommend this place. Worst experience EVER at a doctor office!! I walk into my appointment, no one is at the front desk for 20 minutes! Then, they start calling people back. I had to think carefully before posting this because I don't believe in posting negative things but I feel it's best to let other mother's know my experience with Dr umstead. I am a mother of 7 and I went to him with my 5th child so I had been through this a few times. Every appointment took hours to get through which is not usual even with a OBGYN and that wasnt even the worst part. The week before I was going to be induce with my son I started having contractions so I went to the hospital and found out my son was transverse and that my placenta was a quarter inch above my uterus and he stopped my labor and told me that I needed to go home and rest that he wasnt going to deliver him because he was suppose to be golfing that weekend. So the next Friday came and luckily he had turned but I came in at 7 am and waited until 2 pm for the Dr to show up. When he did the nurses asked if he should do a ultrasound because my placenta was so close to my uterus. He didn't and decided to induce my labor when my water finally broke I had softball size blood clots come out and had to be rushed in for an emergency c section. Dr. Umstead delivered 2 of my 3 boys. One was an emergency C-section, so of course the last was another C-section. He can be a little vague at times, and seem like a very old fashioned doctor. Most first time pregnant women may be off put about him because he's been doing his job for so long that he doesn't explain things in great detail.. however, if you have to have a C-section, you won't want anyone else to do it. He fought for me in the OR when the anastiologist allowed a student to "attempt" my spinal block, he kicked out a coughing nurse, and he's the BEST person to do a C-section as my healing with both we're so much easier then the one he didn't do. No matter what you hear, trust him and his abilities to ensure your and your babies safety. He's amazing and I highly recommend him for anyone that has to have C-section! Amazing Dr. he truly is a wonderful obstetrician. He has delivered both of my boys and I cant tell you enough how great of a Dr. he is. Sure he is a little eccentric, but that really is what make him an amazing Dr. To the women that gave him a bad rating because of your wait times, do you realize he is a obstetrician? Dr. Umstead was both unpleasant, and rude to my wife during her visit. He entered the room, his first words being “who referred you here?” He didn’t listen to anything my wife was telling him and even went so far as to question and challenge her statements about HER OWN BODY. He made no effort to get to know more about the issues she was facing, or the reason for her visit. When my wife struggled and couldn’t continue due to the pain/discomfort, he blamed her “stress,” showing no patience.

I heard that some one was going to Umstead it prompted me now unfortunatly to look at his reviews since my expireience was so terrible I really wish that I did my research 5 years ago when I had him deliver my daughter . After reading alot of the comments I'm just glad my daughter and I are OK. I would not recommend him to anyone. He is extremely rude and arrogant. He was so uncaring and condescending. Here's a few of my awful expirences...... First my daughter was breach and he successfully turned her but without letting it be clearly known that "I was lucky to have him as a Dr because basically alot of other drs weren't competent enough to preform such a procedure. The worst other than my aweful office visits was the day of my delivery . It was a scheduled induction and he planned to turn her again to avoid a c section. I got there bright and early on time as scheduled but waited nervously for hours for him to arrive to the hospital. After finally arriving and him being so rude and impolite to the point of me being in tears and me about to walk out. My husband convinced me to stay so we can finally meet our daughter. Everything finally started and was going OK till it was time to push...... I started and finally he decided we needed an emergency c section my daughter was trying to come out forehead first . Went in delivered her then all hell broke loose. He asked me if I made a decision while he had me open if I wanted my tubes done I said sure why not. It seemed like this whole process was taking forever and then all of sudden he started yelling at the nurses about getting him diffrent suture sizes then more time passes and I think the epidural ran out cause in a blink of an eye it felt like someone was ripping my guts out I managed to get out it hurt it hurts then all I remember is him yelling put her to sleep put her to sleep . I woke up my daughter was being rushed to all children's because she was having breathing difficulties. I asked one of the nurses once I became more cohearant what happened during my c section and she said please please don't say a word to Dr Umstead but all she can tell me is I started bleeding really bad. He released me maybe 24 hrs later so I could go be with my daughter. I went to my follow up appointments had my staples removed when it was time and carried on. Then about 2 months later I kept getting this weird ripping pain in my lower abdomen one day I went to the rest room wiped and to my surprise there was a thickish white string I don't know if you've seen a suture that has been removed but it looked exactly like that. I was in shock I called and made an appointment and YES saved it to show them I wasn't crazy. Went to my appointment and then came I guess his so infamous statement that I now have read about quite a few times "that's not possible" I left feeling so confused and like I was really crazy. I never went back. I hope that some one considering seeing him reads all of these reviews and others on different sites and doesn't have to say he said /did the same exact thing to me!!!! this was supposed to have been one of the best expirences in my life and it was by far that in anyway . I should have changed drs but I didn't please reconsider if your even considering having him as your "DR" are you going to be one of the few he's nice to or one of the ones like myself that have had not even a slightly not so good expirence but a plain out terrible one one. After these many years I still remember it like yesterday PS I also read on here , that someone else mentioned having to get "monitered"the last couple weeks..... Same exact thing happened to me I had to go to the hospital a bunch of times for nonfetal stress test. Because her heart rate wasnt how it should be.... Makes me wonder now as she had no heart issues . I heard that some one was going to Umstead it prompted me now unfortunatly to look at his reviews since my expireience was so terrible I really wish that I did my research 5 years ago when I had him deliver my daughter . After reading alot … More
Worst doctor! He was very rude, I heard him talking negatively about me outside my room to either the nurse, or receptionist. I was there to receive news about my recent pap, and to know if my IUD was still in the correct position. When I asked about the results he dismissed me, all because I didn't get bloodwork done to confirm I was not pregnant. I had my period so I knew I wasn't, and the ultrasound tech for my IUD said I wasn't. I didn't need the extra bloodwork. I told him that I faint when I get bloodwork, and I was sick with a cold on top of that, so I didn't want to put my body through bloodwork since I knew I wasn't pregnant. He was absolutely livid, and treated me with so much disrespect. Part of me felt as if he only wanted the money from getting bloodwork done, and didn't care about what I was saying. I left in tears. He barely made eye contact with me. Stay far away from this man! I am not the only patient with negative reviews on him. I never thought I'd experience anything like I've read in reviews, so I went with him anyway. Trust reviewers. Both the nurse and receptionist were very nice. Worst doctor! Love this doctor!
DR.Umstead is an amazing doctor, caring and funny. The staff is just wonderful
We absolutely loved Dr. Umstead! He is down to Earth with a sense of humor. He always made me feel incredibly comfortable. I had a C-section and I tell you what, I wouldn't have wanted anyone else performing this procedure. He also does VBACS. My scar is so tiny that you can barely notice it. Extremely experienced doctor.
I honestly am shocked by some of these reviews. I was referred to Doctor Umstead through family that had all of their babies with him. I had doctor Umstead for both of my boys. I never had a bad experience with him. As for dry sense of humor him and my husband use to cut jokes at each other all the time. To me he was very real and down to earth. I also wasn't a typical hormonal pregnant women either. I wasn't a high risk pregnancy and 80% of my visits he did an ultrasound and let us see the baby. He offers a vbac if possible. I have 5 boys after he delivered my fifth by csection I was scheduled for my tubal ligation while still in the operating room and even though I had signed the papers giving him permission to do so he knew I was kind of on the fence still and stopped and came and talked to me nicely about it and that he supported whatever decision I make before proceeding. He also came into the room a couple days later to check on us. Sat down held the baby and chatted with us and even took pictures with our son. So like I said I have no idea what these other ladies are talking about. He is a doctor. He's a very busy man. If he rushed through your visit it was probably like any other doctor trying to stay on schedule and you probably wouldn't have been rushed if you were a high risk. I noticed only one review about sitting for 2 hours. Well guess what he's a baby doctor he delivers babies himself he doesn't have someone doing it for him. If you sat for 2 hours chances are he was delivering a baby. He circumcised our boys and let us make payments to him. He just like everyone else deserves a vacation good lord lol! I think that about covers it. Thank you Doctor Umstead You sir are an excellent doctor! I honestly am shocked by some of these reviews. Dr. umstead is amazing. I'm so shocked to see these bad reviews. He delivered my son almost 3 years ago after a very traumatic delivery with my first by a different doctor. He assured me the whole time everything would be perfect and it was. Now baby # 3 is on her way and he's been nothing short of amazing. He sat down with us and went through our whole 3 page birth plan and is honoring all our wishes.. it's not exactly fair to complain about wait times when seeing a doctor who delivers babies. I've waited 2 hours before and I've been in and out in 30 minutes before. More often than not they will call to move your appointment in the event that he is delivering. Everyone has bad days.. even doctors. Maybe he had rough night, rough delivery, or is exhausted from no sleep. Although I've seen him 20+ times throughout both pregnancies and he's never treated me poorly. Always has my best interest and the baby's best interest at heart. His staff is super amazing also & I always have a wonderful experience. Don't let the bad reviews scare you or steer you away from awesome care! Your wait time might be LONG but if it wasn't for Dr. Umstead, my daughter and I would most likely not be here today. He really did save our lives. We were in good hands with him! If I have another baby, I would definitely go back to him again.
Dr. Umstead is a brilliant physician that truly cares about all of his patients. I would highly recommend him to anyone.have been a patient of his since 2006. I have moved away, so tried new doctors and there is no comparison. Id greatly miss having him as part of my healthcare team, if he werent around.

I made an appt. And when I went to confirm they told me they did not put it in the computer and I would have to reschedule so I told them I would call back if I still wanted to come in.. I went there with my son and it was very unpleasant! I was only going to go back 1 time cause I knew he had an ultra sound machine! Well I went to call back to make appt. Because the other docs couldn't see me for a few weeks and umstead answered and I told him I was a high risk and he said I can't see you, please do not call again, just stop calling, please do not ever call again! I understand you can't because I'm high risk but to be so rude!! I made an appt. I was admitted to the hospital and was told Dr Umstead would be a consulting MD after my treatment, I waited for him for one and a half days and he never showed up, After discharge I made an appt to see him, the visit was'nt so bad so i decided to see him a second time, BIG MISTAKE. He set up a minor surgical procedure for me I waited hrs for him when he finally showed up the whole time he was talking to me he kept checking his phone. He later suggested I needed to have a more invasive surgery which i was aware of, however when i went back to set up the date for the surgery he suggested to oldest and most archaic way of doing it, I mentioned to him that i would like a second opinion esp since i just started a new job and i was looking at a shorter recovery time, OMG he blew a Gasket It was like HE went Bipolar on me. He told me he was the best at the way he suggested and I should trust his word as a medical professional, told me that i could get Cancer if i did it another way, slammed my file shut cut me off in mid sentence and walked out of the office leaving me speechless, I was in utter disbelief, I've been a Nurse for many years and i have never seen a doctor behave in such a condescending and disrespectful way. I guess i should have not questioned his opinion or even speak up at all, Worse doctor's experience eve,r I will not be seeing him again. One good thing though the receptionist was very nice, pleasant and sociable. Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had with a doctor, my fiancé and I waiting two hours for an appointment only to have "Doctor" Umstead tell us that because of a migraine and dizziness we were too high risk and needed to leave, without asking any questions or letting us even talk... He likes to interrupt, suddenly walk out of the room, not pay attention to his patients and is just an absolutely disgusting human being. The receptionist was very nice though... I loved having Dr. Umstead and his staff during my pregnancy and post pregnancy. It was unfortunate I went into labor while working over an hour away so I went to a different hospital. But the staff is great. Always made me feel comfortable and never did I feel uncomfortable. An area of improvement could be answering the phone. Many times I have called during business hours and it goes straight to the message. Also, putting in the message which office location they are at for the day would be beneficial. I come for my depo provera shots but don't make an appointment due to my work schedule. Plus I was told I can just come in. The problem with that is I never know which office to go to or can't call to find out where to go. This could be improved drastically. Dr umstead delivered 2 of my children. He is a phenomenal doctor and I highly recommend him.
I had three children under his watch and he's amazing! Wouldn't go to anyone else for an OBGYN. He tells you how it is and has you and your child's best interest at heart. Love the man and I'm blessed to have found such an amazing Dr.
I'm not even sure where these other women went and which Dr. Umstead they visited, but he must've been a different doctor than the one I encountered. :/ Dr. Umstead delivered my son 9-2-15 after seeing me for the latter half of my pregnancy. Previous to Dr. Umstead I saw two other OBGYNs, both of whom did not impress me, nor did their nurses. Dr. Umstead has awesome front and back office medical staff. Yes, his sense of humor could very well be taken as dry. That is, if you're looking for a doctor who also provides slapstick comedy relief whilst giving vaginal exams and showing you images of your unborn baby. Not sure how that would play out, but I assume it'd be pretty awkward.... and kindsa creepy. However, if you want a doctor who is efficient and attentive while having his own sense of humor then this is the right one. He does NOT pressure or try to dissuade on personal decisions like breastfeeding, circumcision of foreskin, or the lack thereof in any decision at all. His delivery wasn't forced and I was able to have my son without tearing or an episiotomy even though I had one 12 years prior with my daughter. He and his staff are pretty much hilarious all of the time. I can't help but to wonder if some of these women had bad experiences because they were not following directives from the doctor. One surefire way to irritate a person who dedicates their life to delivering healthy babies is to disregard their advice and honestly that's the only way I can see Umstead being even slightly offensive. He REALLY cares about his patients.... one look at the pictures covering his walls which are full of babies that he has delivered are proof of it. He's a doctor who treats 50 bazillion pregnant women a year. Based on that fact alone, it is clearly impossible that this doctor is impatient or lacks empathy. He's the best OBGYN I've had by far and I'll see him again if need be.
