Pretty terrible doctor in my opinion. Not very caring… not the same doctor he was known to be a decade ago. His team is nice but when you have hundreds of “top doctors” to choose from to help save a loved ones life and they accept you for treatment into the hospital and do not come and visit you once or once they find out your loved one is at the end of life stage and does not have the common courtesy or decency to come and see you and your family members to explain what’s going on after you CHOSE HIM and not his team whether they are good or not, whether they “kept in communication with Dr.Schiano” or not… I find that to be disgusting. He is socially awkward and always has been but I can overlook that based off of his reputation over the years but it seems he is not the doctor he once was with my experience after loosing a loved one in his care and not once coming personally to check on my father. I was Blessed with the Gift of Life when I received my Liver Transplant at Mount Sinai MC on Oct 22, 2002. Dr Schiano has been my Liver Transplant Hepatologist and Team Leader since then. As a Pro-Active, compliant patient, I consider Dr Schiano one of a select group in this highly specialized medical area to be not only experienced and diagnostically sound, but a gentle doctor of compassion. I have recommended him to other Liver disease patients who feel the same about his treatment and manner.

When I called in liver failure, the woman was not kidding! He is indeed amazing. I have had multiple issues since transplant due to autoimmune disease, etc. He is always there when I need him and he is always right on target!!!! I spend about $200 to travel to see him and I won't stop!

My husband was referred to Thomas Schiano. He was highly recommended and provided us with hope for a future. When my husband became critically ill and was admitted to Mt. Sinai Hospital MICU unit Thomas Schiano was no where to be seen or heard from. I was there 24/7 for the 14 days my husband was there and requested to see him or speak with him every day and he did not come down from his ivory tower even once. NOT ONE direct call. The only correspondence has been bills for co-payments.

A relative was recommend to Schiano with advancing liver disease. The team in place was laxed and seemingly didn't provide needed care. Drug therapy that should have been in place never came until a family member push and pushed. I would do your due diligence before considering this doctor. Mount Sinai once considered the go to hospital is dirty and a shimmer of itself years ago.

Dr. Schiano is the most caring and conscientious doctor that I've ever had. I have been with him for many years, and he is careful and smart with every decision he makes.
