Thomas Grader-Beck

I saw Dr. Grader-Beck back in 2014 because I was so sick and wanted to go to the ‘best’. His attending Dr. Timlin was very thorough and told me I likely had Sjogrens and put me on Plaquenil. I was 22 and went from running half marathons to unable to get out of bed, this is how bad my condition was. I wrote up a list of my symptoms and went to see him for my follow up a couple of months later. He told me that even if I had Sjogrens, it was ‘no big deal’, it wasnt a ‘bad disease’ and dismissed me. I got diagnosed with a lip biopsy through another doc and found out that I do in fact have Sjogrens. The symptoms he dismissed including tachycardias, losing feeling in my legs, frequent urination were all caused by what I now know is autonomic neuropathy. Sjogrens is the second leading cause of autonomic neuropathy next to diabetes, which I know now. Now, the Sjogrens is affecting my heart and this is obviously a systemic disease. For him to have missed this is completely unacceptable.

He brushed me off like I didn’t matter and now almost 7 years later I finally found out what Sjogrens has done to my body, but too late because I now have cardiac involvement. Johns Hopkins should be ashamed to have a doctor on board who does not or is not willing to accept that Sjogrens is more than a dry eye disease. It is systemic and debilitating and stole my entire young adulthood. I spent years thinking I was weak because of the pain and anguish I felt and replaying his words in my head that this disease wasn’t a bad one. Shame on you Dr Grader Beck. Don’t waste your time with him because you are not worth his.

Dr. Grader-Beck is a great physician. He is comforting, he listens, and he is empathetic. I’m very glad he is my doctor, and I feel confident that he’ll take great care of me.
