The technician that I saw for my initial appointment was very helpful. She was extremely knowledgeable with the process, and answered all of my questions.

I had Lasik surgery done from Thomas Cowden at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology on March 26, 2021. My right eye is blurry up close My left eye is blurry seeing far away. Both eyes have trouble seeing at Night time or overcast weather. Blurry vision & frequent headaches. These issues have been going on since after the surgery. I’ve told Cowden at every check up. March 26, 2021 - lasik surgery day April 26, 2021 - 1st appointment- Cowden says keep using drops. September 27, 2021 - 2nd appointment - Cowden says keep using drops. He says I’m having trouble seeing up close because I’m approaching my 40’s. He also says he sees bubbling on my right eye so he has me start taking nighttime eye ointment. Feb 12, 2022 - I call GR OPTHAMOLOGY to make sure they know I don’t want to be told to just keep using my drops. I want answers. I want to figure out what’s wrong with my eyes. I talk to a lady that suggests getting a second opinion from another doctor. I agree. She says they’ll call me back. Feb 17, 2022 - I receive a call from GR OPHTHALMOLOGY saying that I can’t get a second opinion and she’ll talk to Cowden about what I should do next. Feb 23, 2022 - I get a call from GR OPHTHALMOLOGY saying Cowden thinks I should take Restasis because I have DRY EYE. The day after taking Restasis I get very sick. Mar 3, 2022 - Still feeling sick so I call GR OPHTHALMOLOGY to see if I should stop taking Restasis. Kayla says Cowden says to stop taking Restasis and to schedule an appointment for ALPO laser surgery for DRY EYES with Cowden. Mar 14, 2022 - 3rd appointment - Cowden claims he never told anyone to put me on Restasis and I don’t have DRY EYES. He says there’s a new medication called Vuity that will make my pupils smaller and help with my vision(especially night driving) March 15, 2022 - The next day I use the Vuity... I COMPLETELY LOSE MY VISION. So I call to talk to someone at 9am and they tell me it’ll wear off in 6 hours and Cowden will call me at noon. I’m stranded on the side of the road in my work truck waiting for a call back. You would think it was an emergency. Never got a call. I call back and they said Cowden tells me to keep using it. I couldn’t believe this place. They don’t care that I can’t see. They don’t care what side effects that these medications are having on me. They just don’t care. I had an eye appointment scheduled, but the doctor had to leave for an emergency. I was given the choice to reschedule or wait for another doctor to squeeze me in. I waited a few minutes and was seen by Dr. William G Schultz, OD. He was very thorough and took the time to address all of my concerns. His approach was straight forward, respectful, and educational. He is a wonderful doctor, I appreciate everything he did to correct my eyes.

Dr. Schultz and the entire team at GR Ophthalmology do a terrific job of meeting all of my eye care needs. They are efficient, timely while at the same time demonstrate a professionalism and care for the patient I do not see very often in service businesses. I’d highly recommend them to anyone in search of high quality eye care.

I couldn’t believe how well everything went during my cataract surgery. Everything is planned out and it involves a lot of caring people that made me feel calm. From checking in, to pre op area, to surgery, & post op I really appreciated the care. Dr. Morehouse was awesome. He seems so caring and has a sense of humor as well. I don’t know how they do it! Skilled medical professionals doing good work. Explanations are clear and options provided. Front desk folk are brilliantly charming. Improvement is needed in waiting room communication when schedules fall behind or the schedules could be made less dense. Nonetheless, I recommend these doctors.

I saw Dr. Joseph Morehouse DO at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology for a general and diabetic eye exam. He was friendly, thorough, and efficient. I've forgotten the young womans name who brought me back to the exam room room and conducted the initial tests. She deserves a special mention as she set a very friendly and professional tone for the rest of my appointment. She was knowledgeable and answered my questions with the appropriate level of info. Dr Shultz and the young woman assisted him worked well together and provided a very thorough exam giving me a confident feeling. Doctor Cowden and his entire staff are a very caring group of people. Actually I felt right at home with their services. He performed cataract surgery on my eyes and I could not have been treated any better by no one else. If I could grade him he would get a 20 out of ten.

Dr. Vanderlugt and his staff provide great service. I have been a patient of his for several years and have always been treated with courtesy and care. I highly recommend him and his office for the best eye care.

Of the two surgeries and half a dozen pre and post appointments, four of them were postponed and rescheduled with no concern for my schedule and the monetary losses and expenses such postponements cost me, yet constantly reminded me of the $35 fee to me if I were to postpone appointment. The surgical postponement alone cost me over $400 since it put me into the next year which eliminated my copay allotment on my medical expenses of the previous year. All I got was an “I’m sorry”. Everyone, including Dr. Cowden, is very nice & I felt at ease while there. I'm not sure I'm seeing as well as I'd hoped. I paid for one eye & I think I still have astigmatism in it! It takes a long time to get an appointment. But I'm happy with the staff & doctor.

Dr. Cowden was very polite and informative about what I needed to know concerning my eyes

Dr. Cowden has been our ophthalmologist for over a decade and has performed surgeries on both my wife and me. He seems to be an excellent surgeon who not only is courteous, but ready to answer any questions we have had.

Dr. Ellen Vandenberg was great! WARNING: this practice is huge. Arrogant, even bigoted, staff exist. Should you encounter them, don't give up - keep trying until you find a good doctor.

Dr. Cowden and the staff at GRO were great! They were professional and polite and communicated clearly every step of the way. I would highly recommend to anyone that is considering LASIK!

Dr Cowden did a exam for cateracs in my eyes. He was very through and explained my situation clearly. The whole office works so well together, from check in to check out. Great team work! Only wish that they accepted my Verizon insurance.
