I have seen Dr. Sloan twice while admitted at Memorial Central. My first admission was for severe upper right quadrant abdominal pain. He ran a number of tests, including a HIDA scan for gallbladder function. I had severe pain during the test, but he later told me that it was clinically insignificant. I was released from the hospital. I lived in excruciating pain for another 4 weeks, until I had an outpatient appointment with a surgeon. The surgeon examined me, diagnosed biliary dyskinesia, and removed my gallbladder as soon as possible. He told me explicitly that Dr. Sloan was wrong about my HIDA results, that I should have had a surgical consult in the hospital, and that my gallbladder would have been removed immediately if a surgeon had been brought in. That was in July. I was admitted again more recently related to a chronic illness that I have been seeking a diagnosis for over the past 3 years, which recently became very acute. I had been advised by a cardiologist that bloodwork showed signs of adrenal insufficiency, and that I needed to take care of it immediately because the condition is life threatening if untreated. I told this to Dr. Sloan, and he ran an ACTH stimulation test. He told me that the findings were normal, but wouldn't clarify or show me the results at all. When I asked for a copy, I was told I had to request my records to get one - at least one day after I was released. He discharged me without an answer to my debilitating illness, telling me 'Sometimes, in medicine, you just don't get an answer.' When I asked for a second opinion, he was very cold and told me I had to provide it myself, but he was discharging me anyway. I asked him about prognosis and he said 'I have no idea.' I was released. I have since seen another doctor who has access to Memorial's records... my ACTH test is a clear result for Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency. He missed it entirely. When I asked him about getting an endocrinologist, he told me 'Oh, I'm an endocrinologist.' But he is in no way Board certified in that area. He completely misrepresented his training to me, hid my test results from me, and missed diagnosis on a life threatening condition. This is in addition to being very cold, rude, and trying to get out of that hospital room as fast as he can. I fully intend to file a formal grievance. If you end up on the Digestive Medicine unit of Memorial Central - get transferred to another floor!!

My uncle was dying in the hospital and Dr. Sloan refused pain medicine to him under the premise he was a drug user. My uncle has been clean and sober for most of his life and struggled. My uncle was in the hospital for a couple of days and has died. Every human being deserves to die comfortably. The actions of this doctor are inexcusable. Memorial Hospital is sub par.
