On Jan 25, 2022 I was driven to Health Park Medical Center emergency room with sudden onset, severe abdominal pain. Due to the normal heavy load of elderly “snowbirds” and the Omicron surge, the ER was operating under severe stress with (I was told later) over 60 people on gurneys in ER awaiting a bed. Due to severity of my condition as evidenced by CT scans, my age (74 yrs) and the severely stressed medical resources, my condition was diagnosed as offering a poor chance of survival and I was sidelined in the ER (this is standard triage procedure). The aggressive intervention of a family member finally stimulated staff action but by then blood levels of lactic acid showed the presence of necrosis (gangrene) in my body. After a total of 36 hours in the ER my condition had severely deteriorated and during an attempted CT scan preceding surgery, I “crashed” at which point a pulmonary specialist, Dr Stephen Hannan, was called in and under emergency conditions in the scanner, inserted a vent to keep me alive. He continued to care for me during several days in ICU when I was in “guarded” condition (I subsequently spent 7 days in ICU and 10 in a regular room). Dr Hannan has a calm, reassuring demeanor which instills great confidence and my Daughter who was with me throughout this ordeal leaned heavily on him for reassurance while my life hung in the balance. My father is in FL in the hospital while I am in IL. There was some devastating news and I had a very strong opinion and plan for treating my father that Dr. Hannan completely respected and honored. I know he saved my dad's life and I want him to know I greatly appreciate it. Feel blessed to have had him be the pulmonary doctor available that particular day. Thank you for caring AND understanding. Will always remember!
