I was recently a patient here and will not be returning due to the care I received. I am a black female who is a general surgery resident. I previously had an IUD placed and my Nexplanon removed at a different facility. It was all done on the same day and my insurance covered everything. When I made my appointment, I made sure to let them know that I would want my IUD removed and Nexplanon placed at the same visit. I told the scheduler to write that down to be sure that it wouldn’t be a problem. I waited 3 weeks for this appointment which was at 3pm on a Friday (plenty of time to do both procedures). I know that because I have assisted with both procedures multiple times. The provider also has very limited availability and is only at this clinic on Fridays and is the only one who does this procedure so I didn’t want to have to find multiple appointment times unnecessarily and pay multiple co-pays. First, I waited 50 minutes to be seen by the doctor. By the time she came, she then spent 15 minutes talking about her concerns as to whether my insurance would cover IUD removal and Nexplanon placement all in one visit. I was very clear about the fact that I was getting my IUD out because I was constantly cramping all the time and was having a lot of pain with it. She asked NO questions about that and instead was very concerned about making sure my annual got done. She was highly concerned about billing this as an annual and making sure to STD screen me and to check for HIV EVEN THOUGH I was very clear that I have been in a long term relationship since 2019. To her credit, she kept repeating that she would be happy to do everything I had made the appointment for but was just concerned about the insurance. After she wasted those 15 minutes of my time expressing her concern but not listening to any of mine, I asked for five minutes to think about what I should do. I was able to call my insurance in the office to ask if both procedures would be covered in one visit and MIRACULOUSLY was able to get an answer from a representative in 5 minutes. I repeat, the phone call took only five minutes. At this point it is around 415pm, I call her back in and let her know that my insurance stated that they would be able to take care of both. She then proceeded to tell me that we wouldn’t be able to proceed because It was getting “late in the day” and she “couldn’t hold the staff”. She wasn’t going to do ANY of the procedures that I had ORIGINALLY MADE THE APPOINTMENT FOR and was very clear that I wanted to have done. Keep in mind, my appointment was at 3pm and it was now 4:20ish pm. She continued to refuse to do the Nexplanon so I eventually capitulated and decided to just take out the IUD and go on oral contraceptive. (MY IDEA not hers. She gave no suggestions, but I was in pain and decided that it would be best to just have the IUD out and go from there) The entire thing took about 10 minutes and we finished in the room at 4:31pm. I will not be returning to this clinic. This was a very frustrating and disrespectful experience where none of my concerns and desires were listened to for an appointment that I was very clear about making at the start. Finally, on the way out when I had to make a follow-up appointment, there were no open spots for at least a month. I will be going to a different clinic sooner to get this Nexplanon placed.
