My son had undiagnosed lip and tongue ties. He had to endure weekly heel sticks due to so called breastmilk jaundice diagnosed by Dr. Jewell, but his unrecognized ties were hindering his ability to effectively intake milk—and why his jaundice took a month to clear! My son was also experiencing poor weight gain despite hourly breastfeeding. Dr. Jewell’s first assumption was that I had a poor milk supply and require exclusive pumping and bottle feeding and/or formula. My son still struggled to feed from a bottle but it was easier than breastfeeding for him and he ultimately refused to go back to breastfeeding leaving me chained to the pump. She referred us to a lactation consultant who recognized a posterior tongue and upper lip tie and referred us to a pediatric dentist who diagnosed and released these, however it was too late to save breastfeeding. Had this been recognized and treated within the first 2 weeks of life, he would still be breastfeeding. Yet, Dr. Jewell denied he had ties.
