Reviews for Scott Wedgwood Wolfe
Our daughter is a gifted musician who plays 14 instruments. She underwent an aspiration under ultrasound for a small cyst at another facility and the doctor there hit a nerve in her wrist causing considerable constant pain, and often her wrist and fingers would swell so much she could not even bend them. For 2 years, she could no longer play in the symphony orchestra. During that time, we took her to other 2 surgeons - one told her to give up her instruments, the other actually asked if she had friends or claimed her wrist swelling could be from her menstrual cycle! We were at wit's end! Finally, we were introduced to Dr. Wolfe at HSS in NYC. His surgery, where he described her area of pain as a "tortured nerve," proved wonderfully successful and now our daughter is back in the orchestra and music fills our home once again! We are forever grateful to Dr. Wolfe for his expertise!
I suffered severe nerve damage in my elbow and wrist. My condition worsened as multiple specialists downplayed the severity of my neuropathy , and I feared I would permanently lose the ability to use my one hand, which would be devastating as I perform neurosurgery for a living. I asked a top neurosurgeon who I should see and without hesitation he told me Dr. Scott Wolfe; he is the best. Dr. Wolfe examined me thoroughly, answered my questions honestly, and fit me in for surgery as soon as he could. He noticed abnormalities on his examination (not even fully appreciated by an EMG) that I am certain would have been missed by a lesser surgeon and adjusted my surgical plan accordingly. I am now 5 weeks post surgery and am improving faster than even the occupational therapist thought possible. Dr. Wolfe gave me back my hand and my life!
I first note that I have never before posted any comments regarding professional services rendered to me. However, given the extraordinary treatment, care and results that I received from Dr. Scott Wolfe and his staff at HSS, I believe that I should share my respect and admiration with others who might be undergoing orthopedic surgery. I can attest to the outstanding professionalism, the kindness with which it was conveyed and, most importantly the superior skill that informed this entire experience which ultimately gave me the use of my hand back from a rather complicated compound wrist fracture. Every interaction with the doctor and his staff from the appointment makers in the office to the occupational therapists with whom I spent dozens of hours was met with patience, warmth, support and efficiency. Dr. Wolfe has my deepest respect and admiration and I recommend him without reservation to anyone who might need such services.

Hand and risk have gotten progressively worse since aggressive surgery....that was overkill and not necessary. BEWARE
Dr. Wolfe is amazing! I have had Arthritis (since childhood) for years. The damage it causes is not just to the bones but the rough surface it created ruptured all my tendons in my wrist that operate my fingers. I could not do much with that hand at all and I even had pain, which I don't normally do. So I was a tough case. It was so refreshing having a doctor that understood the temperament of an arthritic who could joke and laugh and has a hard time admitting to pain. He listened to how I wanted to be able to function and I couldn't be happier with what he did...rerouting ligaments so I could use my hand again. He was completely thorough, kind, dedicated and made it happen! Wish I went to him years ago! Dr. Wolfe is amazing! I have had Arthritis (since childhood) for years. An excellent surgeon and wonderful staff. I had 4 different procedures caused by RA at 82 yrs old 4 mos ago. He and his staff are 5 star in every area of care.
Dr Wolfe was not only receptive, he explained everything simply and not rushed. He made me feel like he cared.
I have a variety of finger and hand issues such as carpal tunnel, trigger finger and chronic arthritis. Dr. Wolfe’s expertise in these problems have kept me active and playing about 80 rounds of golf every season. Probably the best hand surgeon walking the planet.
I went to him for a wrist problem I've been having for a while and he was honestly kind of...mean. I've never had a doctor be so unkind with the way he spoke to me. He had absolutely no empathy and wasn't nice. I'm really shocked he spoke to me like that :(
I've been to multiple specialists for the past year for my wrist and every single health care professional have yet to identify what's wrong with me and when I came to see Mr. Wolfe I was met with mock and insult for not knowing my own problem. I specifically came to see him for answers and instead was met with laughter and ridicule despite the fact I only have two days in NYC. Instead of empathy and understanding I was laughed at by him and his PA. He did apologize after I vented out my frustration but regardless I am left with no answer and have only one more day to figure out my health. I didn't meet with a doctor hence the lack of proper title, I just met someone else who wasted my time and spent it criticizing me. READ THIS REVIEW!! I have been working in the O.R. for 27 years. I think it's important for you all to know that because I know what it's like on the other side. Well, I was on the patient side and I couldn't have been happier. I have logged in 2 surgeries and 13 hours of surgical time and I wouldn't take any of it back even the post-op discomfort for my experience with Dr. Wolfe and his staff!! He is truly the best!! Dr. Wolfe takes the extra time and is truly only worried about one thing, the best possible outcome for his patients, I'm living proof. The nerve pain I had for 6 years is gone along with the many other symptoms I suffered from with Parsonage Turner Syndrome. I have now had 3 episodes of PTS and he knew exactly what to do and how to do it, where other doctors have failed for 6 years. His optimism and drive to make his patients better is uncanny. His office is amazing as well, they ALL have been extremely, kind, patient and go above and beyond the scope of what they are supposed to do. I honestly feel like I have received the royal treatment but I know that's how they treat everybody. It's so unfortunate that there are only 5 stars, because I honestly feel that there isn't enough stars for a proper rating for Dr. Wolfe. I'm forever grateful to Dr. Wolfe. I had permanent ulnar nerve damage because of a tumor growth. I lost 90% of my right (dominant) hand functionality and strength due to the nerve damage. Dr. Wolfe diligently explained and walked me through the best possible solution to restore the functionality of my right hand. He's building me a new right hand by transferring 8+ tendons! It's a work of art and I'm so blessed for his expertise. His entire staff at HSS is accommodating, organized, professional and efficient. Also to worth mentioning, I was living in 24/7 pain, discomfort and numbness for over a year + which now has disappeared. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Wish there were more stars to give. I saw Dr. Wolfe 6 months before an important athletics season was approaching for wrist pain. I soon discovered that I needed a surgical repair of my TFCC and and underwent several months of physical therapy following the operation in order to get me back healthy for our season. Dr. Wolfe was professional, charismatic, and so knowledgable about the realistic recovery timeline. He got me back in time for my sports season safely and I had a wonderful experience working with the HSS staff.
Dr. Wolfe and his team provide the greatest expertise and professional care we have experienced. Our teenage son has seen a few other doctors at different orthopedic offices who provided a brief exploration of his wrist issue. Dr. Wolfe listened to the patient and conducted a thorough exam with measuring instruments. He got on the phone with a couple of radiologists to consult on our son's MRI the day before Thanksgiving, not wanting us to have a long weekend of continued worry. Our son was put into a cast that day by the doctor himself, explaining his reasoning and reassuring his young patient. We spoke with him by phone and email during the casted time, even over the Christmas holiday. His office works as a team coordinating patient care and accommodation. Scheduling, appointments, returned calls and follow up therapy all stand on this excellent level of healthcare professional and compassion.
Doctor is very caring and professional. His office is set up the same way, caring and professional staff. This of course in addition to his expertise. I had tendon surgery on a stubborn finger that refused to straighten out. He worked with me until it straightened out, by advising and trying different devices. The post surgery follow ups were excellent. I was extremely pleased and would recommend Dr.Wolfe to anyone who needs a first class hand surgeon. The hospital and follow up hand therapy at HSS were amazing as well. To summarize, the entire Dr. Wolfe and HSS experience was superb.
I am a surgeon and went to several of the top hand surgeons and Dr. Wolf was by far head and shoulders above the others. Simply put, his care and his team are world class. He is empathetic and spends time explaining every detail of the problem your experiencing. He is a world class clinician and found a problem that other doctors missed. He is the best of the best and why I chose him to do a procedure on my invaluable hands. The surgery center team was fantastic. It was during the covid pandemic in the summer and I felt safe and all precautions were taken. Dr. Wolfe’s assistant is outstanding and also was very receptive to questions I had. Thank you!
Dr. Wolfe was recommended to me as the best hand surgeon in the world. Based on my experience with him, that must be the truth. Other doctors said that in a few years my hand would not be functional. Now about a year and a half out from my surgery, I am recovering well and am able to play tennis without pain. I am so grateful to Dr. Wolfe and I would recommend him a thousand times over.
This is the first time I have ever reviewed a doctor. The reason I am writing this comment is due to the remarkable result of a procedure performed by Dr. Wolfe on my wrist. I had suffered with wrist pain for at least 20 years. I was examined by doctors at NYU, Columbia Presbyterian, and Mt. Sinai. All of the proposed procedures suggested would have resulted in significant loss of functionality as well as increased instability in the joint. The procedure performed by Dr. Wolfe was the least invasive and resulted in the complete elimination of my chronic pain as well as a major increase in the range of motion.
Dr. Wolfe has given my arm back to me. After surgery to resolve multiple problems in my shoulder only resolved some problems last year, my original surgeon, Dr. Struan Coleman, also of HSS who did a fantastic job on my shoulder by restoring my strength and mobility, referred me to Dr. Wolfe. Dr. Wolfe was intent on determining what was still causing me pain and difficulty. He correctly diagnosed a compressed ulnar nerve in my elbow and he operated on my elbow. I started seeing results that week, as the numbness and tingling and pain I’d had for ages was gone! I owe Dr. Wolfe, his PA Carly, and the entire office so much gratitude. They are friendly, professional, caring, and devoted. Dr. Wolfe does not rest until he fixes his patients’ problems. If, heaven forbid, I ever have another problem with anything in Dr. Wolfe’s field, I won’t hesitate to give him a call.
Angels I say, they’re Angels. Heaven is short a half a dozen angels and they all work at HSS in New York. I recently had surgery for carpal tunnel at HSS. My right hand on July 7 and my left hand on August 4th. Dr. Wolf was my surgeon and savior. I was very nervous for my first surgery but from the moment I came into the Ambulatory center the staff put me at ease and reassured me at every turn. I can not say enough for these wonderful people (angels). From the moment I entered pre op, and until I was in recovery there was always someone comforting me and making sure I understood what was happening. During my first surgery one of the attendants could see I was nervous and in some pain, she immediately alerted Dr. Wold and said, “let me hold your hand until you are more comfortable.” You have no idea how wonderful that made me feel. When I came in for my next round I was so happy to see most of the same angels who had taken cane of me the first time, I was immediately at ease.

I had ulnar nerve transposition 12-17 with Dr Wolfe. I travelled into NYC because of the skill and knowledge he has with nerves and this procedure. Though I did not like the fact that I was never told a student would be in the room and the fact that it took over a year to heal and start lifting again, I realize now how successful the procedure went. It could of went terribly wrong and I have no pain anymore at all. Thank you for all your help! I had ulnar nerve transposition 12-17 with Dr Wolfe. Prior to seeing Dr. Wolfe, I had visited other physicians in New Jersey for a problem with the anterior interosseous nerve in my left arm, which prevented me from moving my left thumb. Some doctors suggested waiting to see if the nerve would heal on its own, another wanted to do an older surgical procedure from which I might have regained some mobility. When I visited Dr. Wolfe, he immediately identified the condition I had, and provided me with a roadmap for treatment, which included a new innovative surgical procedure. Dr. Wolfe is a pioneer in the treatment of this condition, and because of his medical expertise in this field, I have now completely regained full use of my thumb. I had Dupuytren’s disease in my left hand and it had progressed over the last 10 years. HSS and Dr. Wolfe made the surgery and the administrative process almost painless. Dr. Wolfe’s team is very welcoming and made me feel at ease throughout the surgery preparation, recovery and follow up. In addition, Dr. Wolfe interviewed my physical therapist that I had selected and found them wanting, so he suggested I find one with the proper credentials which I did and am now much further along in recovery. Thank you Dr. Wolfe and team!

Recently had surgery for carpal tunnel and had unfavorable outcome and was treated unprofessionally! after I complained of pain and being treated unprofessionally-Dr Wolfe’s behavior changed and he was more attentive. The point is I never should have been spoken to unprofessionally and had my complaints dismissed in the first place. My hand is worse than before the surgery. The assistant Carly just says “got it” after all my complaints but actually she never really “got it” or cared. Go elsewhere. HSS Has a great reputation but with my experience -I would never recommend anyone there

Very happy with Dr. Wolfe. He performed surgery on my thumb to remove a mass. First off, the entire office is very efficient and organized and professional, accommodating and available to the patients. The Dr was informative, great bedside manner, and skilled. I was told I would have a long scar along my thumb so I prepared for just an ugly scar. To my surprise, my incision healed so nicely. There is minimal trace. The doctor did a fantastic job!!! If you are reading this, then just like me- you're looking for the best arm and hand surgeon you can find. I will tell you- you found him- I came to Dr. Wolfe- with a serious crushing arm and hand injury from being pulled into a machine. After 3 surgeries from local doctors, my arm and hand was still unusable and further worsend by 4 months of terrible post care. Local doctors had already concluded that my arm would be 50% at best, and probably live with pain for the rest of my life. I felt like I was on the verge of losing any use of my arm. Over the next 4 months and an additional 4 long surgeries with Dr. Wolfe, he systematically rebuilt my hand and arm. Today- I am 100% with no restrictions and no pain. Dr Wolfe did such an excellent job that you can hardly notice anything ever happened. Dr. Wolfe is not only the foremost expert in the field- he is a kind and concerned Doctor that takes the time to listen to you. Dr. Wolfe makes sure that you understand the treatment plan every step of the way. The emotional and physical care he showed during such a trying time- gave me the opportunity to do my part and get back to living life again. Dear Dr Scott Wolfe, It's easy to see why you are recognized as one of the best doctors in New York City, an honor very well deserved. I am very grateful to you and your incredible staff. Your secretary went beyond the call of duty… very professional, very accommodating, very kind. Your physician's assistant Carly was always available to answer questions and give guidance. She is a credit to her profession. I received excellent care and am aware of how fortunate I am to be your patient. Sincerely, Jo Frances Cipolla East Amerst, NY
Dr. Scott Wolfe, aside from being a top-rated surgeon, has outstanding bedside manner. This is important to me. I like to know the facts, and have them presented to me in a clear and respectful manner. I saw him for a tricep tendon issue, and we agreed to pursue several months of PT. The problem remained, and so I elected to do surgery. It went perfectly. I'm lucky, but I also had a good doctor! His supporting staff are also very good, friendly and knowledgable. He is a fixer!
Dr. Wolfe performed surgery on my right wrist. I had total confidence in him and the outcome of the surgery. I wanted the best and that is what I got!
I went to dr wolfe for ulnar nerve transposition in 12-2017. I did so because his reviews were high and he seemed very experienced. However several months after my surgery I still get pain from my elbow to my pinky if I lift over 4lb weights or pull things hard. This wasn’t the case before Surgery.Plus I have a lot of scar tissue which seems excessive Everytime I followed up Dr wolfe was never in his office or followed up with me as I am under his care for a full year

Dr. Wolfe’s excellence as a highly-skilled hand surgeon are as superb as his ability to engage with patients and put them at ease. Sensitive to his patients, Dr. Wolfe takes the time necessary to be sure his patients are comfortable before and after surgery and as he carefully performs delicate surgery. I know from colleagues and my own recent surgery just how exceptional Dr. Wolfe is. I had peace of mind knowing that I was in the safe hands of Dr. Wolfe and his professional, caring staff.
I cannot begin to fully explain how grateful we are to Dr. Wolfe. Every step of the way we were met with support & compassion. From pre-op to post-op follow up appointments, every question and concern was addressed. Because of Dr. Wolfe, Robert is back on the field participating in the sports he loves. The results are phenomenal. We have a very happy young man and one very happy Mom. Thank you Dr. Wolfe!

This is not a rating of Dr.Wolfe, but the front desk. I was skiing in Switzerland when My wife broke an arm, and was promptly operated there. Unfortunately, a week after arriving back to NYC, I was informed by her Swiss surgeon that the surgery didn't go well and I must see a local surgeon ASAP, to correct whatever didn't go well. That had to be done in a matter of a week. Fortunately, Dr.Wolfe responded to e.mail to see as promptly. Unfortunately, when I called to schedule an appointment, his secretary issued the list of demands that we have to provide, such as complete post surgical reports and X-rays. After emailing whatever we were given in Switzerland, the same secretary said that's not enough, and unless we sent her more info, she will not show it to Dr.Wolfe, and we will need to look for another doctor. So much for the urgency of the case. Needless to say, after failed attempts to contact a Swiss hospital for more info, that had also be translated into English, we could not see Dr.Wolfe. Dr Wolfe is one of the most amazing surgeons I have ever come across. I was recommended by him for a revision on my ulnar nerve which was unsuccessfully performed by a local surgeon. Dr. Wolfe performed a battery of tests which are not available locally to determine that the nerve was placed in the way of scar tissue and therefore was blocked from firing. He performed surgery and within two days later I began to have feeling in the back of my paralyzed numb pinky for the first time in eight months! While recovery is a long arduous process, the nerve is in the right place and my hand is no longer clawing and after four months the pain level has subsided to a manageable level. He is not a surgeon who will open you up for no reason - he first evaluates whether there are other avenues to explore. He is in an elite category for this type of surgery and I would highly recommend him to anyone who is struggling with ulnar nerve issues. Dr. Wolfe rebuilt my left wrist and gave me my fingers back. Several tendons had ruptured, the wrist was severely damaged by RA. I found him (divine guidance, perhaps?) he agreed to do the surgery, which was very last minute and only days before Christmas. That day he was scheduled to go on vacation. He spent about five hours in surgery meticulously repairing things, removing things, transferring tendons and more. My fingers have excellent function, are strong and very mobile. Dr. Wolfe came highly recommended and he did not disappoint. The surgery that he performed on my fingers was extraordinary. Also it is important to mention that he recommended hand therapy for two years to see if surgery could be avoided. You know you have a good surgeon when they don't push to operate. I mean come on that's what surgeons do, the mediocre ones, they encourage you to operate. Also, his office is very well run with no wait time for your appointment.
