I've been chronically ill and so have seen more doctors than I ever thought possible. Dr Spiera is by far the best doctor I've seen during this time. He actually listens to you and is very compassionate and kind. He takes the time and care to come at your problem from every angle and is thorough enough to consider every possibility. He's very knowledgeable and gave me answers other doctors haven't been able to. Many doctors spend a short amount of time with you and just want to put you on meds and push you out the door. It was so refreshing to have a doctor that really looks at you like a human being and not just a problem to solve. Superb! He is kind, he is knowledgeable, he is a good listener and a good questioner. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a rheumat. Tamara Weintraub
Doctor is top notch. The office and office personnel, however, is far from it; it is, in fact, the opposite. Rude, horrible nasty people. They talk badly about patients while people in the waiting can hear them; they do not follow up or do what they tell you they will, and they are simply the most awful support staff I have ever met, in any doctor’s office, in 40 years. It is shocking, and for the life of me I cannot fathom why anyone would treat patients in such an unprofessional, and downright mean, manner. A shame, as again, the doctor is wonderful. Dr. Spiera is the best doctor ever. He listens. He cares. He knows his stuff. I love that he never pushes meds unless needed. He treats you like he would treat his family. He is worth every penny. My only wish is that the front desk staff would be less nasty. For the amount paid to see the practice you would expect someone at the front with a smile on their face and no snarky comments. I received very fine care. Thank you!!
Seemed average. Cash only which makes one expect a decent visit. Disappointing.. seems like his research is drug companies which pay him.

Fabulous Dr. I drove 300 miles and was so impressed. He is so knowledgeable. Not many doctors around specializing in scleroderma. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Spiera has been my doctor for lupus many years. He is a smart, caring and thoughtful doctor who gives 100% of his attention to his patients. I would recommend him to anyone who needs a great rheumatologist.
I have an expensive PPO insurance plan so that I can go to doctors anywhere in the US. I find it disgusting when doctors do not honor their Hippocratic oath and do not accept any insurance. It is clear their interest is only themselves and not the words of the oath that says, I have "special obligations to ALL my fellow human beings." Dr. Spiera should change the many webpages he is on which say he accepts insurance because it is false advertising. I have no interest in doctors of this type.
Best doctor in his field - hands down.

Doctor Spiera doesn't take insurance, so you'll be charged $700 just to meet him.
Is it really necessary for the nurse/receptionist to be so nasty? Clearly if someone is calling the office of a rheumatologist to schedule an appointment they aren't feeling well. An ounce of compassion would go a long way instead of being curt and obnoxious when stating that he doesn't take any insurance. Completely unwarranted attitude when all I did is ask to make an appointment. Wouldn't go to this office if he was the last rheumatologist in NYC. Paid the $700 and was worth every penny. Very smart, caring and attentive
Excellent doctor. Caring, easy to speak with, very accessible and conservative with medication. I drive from NJ to see Dr. Spiera for my visits. I highly recommend Dr Robert Spiera, he is the best doctor I have ever had!
An acute diagnostician, and a walking comprehensive medical index. He is one of the few people I've met in my life I can actually see "his mind working", and it churns at an accelerated speed. Dr Robert Spiera is a shining, humble, jewel. A highly respected and established medical researcher, with numerous publications, he is up to date on the cutting edge of soon to be great scientific breakthroughs. Yet that never interferes with his personal touch, his thorough patient evaluations and his consistent followups. He eschews the ease of email, preferring to make personal phone calls to his patients at the end of each day. His humanity speaks volumes for his character. He is a wonderful human being. A physician who has truly dedicated his talents to helping those afflicted with pain and in need of help. I can testify, as his patient of almost 4 years, that I cannot recommend his abilities as a physician any more highly, nor his vibrant warmth and compassion. He has not worked miracles for me, but he has never promised me any. He has stepped up for me at some very difficult junctures when other doctors wouldn't, and I am indebted to him for being willing to make the "hard decision" regarding prescribing certain medications, when other physicians wouldn't. He has an open ear (a great listener), an open mind, and an open heart. Dr Robert Spiera has stayed the course with me over the long-term. He has seen me through some long difficult stretches with my complicated autoimmune issues. He has helped me weather those tough times and guided me to a more established quality of life. I thank him regularly for his service - it is almost an understatement to say he is sincerely committed to his patients. This is a man I trust to make the best informed decisions regarding my health, which is my life. If health is wealth, then Dr Spiera is constantly working to make me rich. I know my health, given patience, will continue to improve under his supervision. I will be a rich man. I give him a 6 star rating. PS His private practice - where he sees patients - is at Rheumatology Associates, 1088 Park Ave. This review is connected to his office at HSS. I love Dr. Spiera! He has been my specialist for about a year. You can really tell he cares for his patients. Great listener and makes you feel comfortable. He is very knowledgeable! I wouldn't pay to see anyone else!
Doctoer Spiera doesn't accept any insurance, so expect to pay $700 just to meet him, and who knows how much for followups. I'm not wealthy enough to afford that ON TOP of the insurance I pay through the teeth for, so I guess my health isn't any concern to him.

Best doctor I've ever encountered. Caring, listens to the patient, very accessible, office admin is organized and fantastic.
Dr Robert Spiera was the first doctor to diagnosis my Stiff Person Syndrome, after years of visiting drs! He thought out of the box when all the other doctors were looking elsewhere. He will spend extra time researching issues and referrals (if needed) to be sure you receive the best care. He's a brilliant practitioner.
