Gifted doctor. Highly recommend.

Dr. Shuler performed a victrectomy for my detached retina. He fit me in the day he saw me to try to prevent loss of my center vision. I will forever be grateful to him for that. I am still in the recovery phase but I have been pleased with his experience and expertise with my situation. I have been very anxious about this whole situation and he has been patient with me. Thank you Dr. Shuler. I would recommend him because I think he is an excellent retina surgeon.

I had a torn retina and he fit me in for emergency surgery. Results were awesome, allowing me to see better than before the tear. That is really ALL that is important when it comes go your eye sight

I had a detached retina - diagnosed by another eye doctor on a Saturday night He referred me to Dr. Shuler who saw me on Sunday and operated on Monday morning! Dr. Shuler is kind, compassionate, caring, and skilled. He knows his stuff and he cares about his patients. I was in a serious situation and am so grateful for my eyesight and for his skill. He can appear quiet at first meeting, but takes as much time as needed to answer questions and fully explain. He is honest and straightforward - especially about my responsibilities after the surgery to insure healing. My follow-up visits have been wonderful as he continues to monitor - all has healed wonderfully! So thankful for Dr. Shuler! Dr. Shuler is a very skilled surgeon. He answered every question I had, and was even there when I needed to ask a question outside of a scheduled appointment time. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering retina surgery. He is exceptional.

Very knowledgeable doctor, but the doctor-patient connection that I seek with any provider was just not there. Although he explained everything well, he was not friendly or warm in his manner, and therefore did not instill the confidence/comfort I needed to make an important decision. He had no smile or handshake for me. Perhaps he was having a bad day, or is no longer inspired by his work (?). Regardless of the issue, a doctor should never allow anything to affect their interaction with patients. I also felt that 30 minutes was excessively long to wait to speak with him personally (once all the prep work was done). Total visit time was over 2 hours.

We are fortunate to have Southeastern Retina Associates in our area. Dr. Shuler is highly skilled and exceptionally trained. I am blessed to be under his care. My sight is a huge blessing.

A routine eye exam 2 years ago revealed a detached retina and my ophthalmologist immediately referred me to Dr. Shuler. I had never had symptoms and was frightened. Dr. Shuler took the time to explain what was happening to my eye and my options. He answered every question, was very patient with my anxiety, and helped me feel comfortable with the decision for surgery. It was done at his office, and follow-ups have been every six months since, every one the same positive experience as my first. I can never say enough good things about Dr. Shuler. He is kind and caring, knowledgeable and straightforward, and an excellent surgeon. His staff are wonderful too, helping put me at ease for surgery, and always available to answer questions. Dr. Shuler always reminds that if I ever have any concerns to feel free to come in and he will take a look. What else could one ever ask for in a doctor? I recommend him highly. He is the best!

Dr. Shuler has been treating me for over 5-years for diabetic issues including diabetic retinopathy. Thanks to his expertise we have been able to slow the progression if my eye disease down. Not only is he an expert in the field, he is very gentle when I receive a shot in my eye. He takes time to explain the procedures and everything that he is going to do. I have never felt rushed, he will patiently answer every question that I asked. I highly recommend this doctor!!! Dr. Shuler is a very caring physician who does an excellent job. He is easy to communicate with and always explains what is going on with my eyes. I would definitely recommend him if a specialist is needed.

My eye doctor recommended seeing a specialist, Dr. Shular when my retina in the left eye was showing bleeding and needed attention. Surgery was chosen as an option to clear-up situation. Dr. Shular did a masterful job of explaining the procedure, and it was very successful! Dr. Shular and his staff are so professional and make every visit a pleasant one. The post-op care is terrific and Dr. Shuler is highly recommended! All 5 stars for this doc and staff!

I am so thankful to Dr. Shuler for the wonderful job he did repairing a macular hole in my eye. The hole was discovered about a month before I was to go on a backpacking trip down the Grand Canyon with friends. Dr. Shuler was able to inject just the right amount of gas to repair the macular hole and dissipate just in time for me to catch my scheduled flight out west.

I do recommend Dr. Shuler for serious eye issues. He does know his profession very well. My preference in dealing with a doctor is to have an easy flow of communication. I want the process of asking questions or raising issues with my doctor to be easy. I do not have this ease with Dr. Shuler. I feel I spend up to 2 hours from the start of my visit to the end of it just to have 5 to 10 minutes with him. The rest of the time is waiting in between dealing with 2 preparatory steps.

My friend had to be worked in emergently with Dr. Shuler and was very nervous. After the exam, Dr. Shuler explained the diagnosis and answered her questions in a way that she was able to understand. His care and compassion put us both at ease. He is an excellent doctor!

A sudden change in my vision required an evaluation by a retina specialist and Dr. Shuler was highly recommended. He is very thorough and professional. He took time to explain my situation in detail, discussing my options, risks and possible complications. My eye required surgery and it was a complete success! Restoration of my vision has been a wonderful gift. I am thankful for Dr. Shuler!

Dr. Shuler is a miracle worker! He fixed my detached retina, despite five tears in my eyeball! He is kind, patient, and super skilled. How lucky I was to have him!

I had the vitreous humor replaced in both eyes. Dr. Shuler carefully monitored my increasing difficulty over recent years. Each time, he carefully reviewed the options with me including possible difficulties. I finally determined that the procedures were necessary. The surgery was in each case performed very comfortably for me, with minimal discomfort and with excellent result. Dr. Shuler is caring and professional. His offices are pleasant and welcoming.

staff was very kind but Dr. Shuler spoke condescendingly to my mother and rudely to me after I tried to explain that she had a question. When he turned to leave the room without giving us the opportunity to ask questions he became angry with me been more for asking his permission for us to ask questions before he left and said he was doing her a favor by seeing her in her hometown so she didn’t have to drive to Knoxville. Even if he was haning a bad day he shouldn’t take it out on patients.

Dr. Shuler is nothing short of a miracle worker! I had 20-40 vision and had to wear glasses when driving or watching TV. I then, at the same time, badly detached the retinas in both eyes. After surgery by Dr. Shuler, I now have 20-20 vision. No more need for glasses as my distance vision is now perfect. Never, even in my wildest dreams, did I expect such an awesome outcome. It would take an extremely high skill level to achieve such a result. I COULD NOT RECOMMEND DR. SHULER ANY MORE HIGHLY!

It all began with a “shadow” in my peripheral vision in my right eye. A few test, a phone call, and appointment with the on-call Retinal Surgeon, Dr. Robert K. Shuler. I was scheduled for surgery and afterwards he explained I had a 75 percent retinal detachment. Miraculously it was not in my field of vision. 4 months later, my vision is 100 PERCENT back to normal. I am VERY pleased with Dr. Shuler as a person and thankful he was blessed with the skilled hands of a Retinal Surgeon.

Dr Shuler performed surgery for my detatched retina. The procedure went very well and my vision was saved. That is the bottom line. Beyond that, Dr Shuler and his staff have always been very friendly, professional, and competent. Setting appointments is easy...he is accessible. Dr Shuler is not one for idle chit chat. But he will clearly address all your questions and concerns. He is direct and efficient. And clearly very good at his chosen profession. I recommend him highly.

Dr. Shuler is a great Dr. I had to have emergency retina surgery on New Years Eve, and he did it. My eye is doing great now.

Faced with a retinal detachment in my one "good" eye, Dr. Shuler, with quiet confidence, skill and professionalism performed the laser re-attachment. My recovery period was within a normal timeframe. What was abnormal was the level of vision I regained. Three years out, the corrected vision in my eye is 20/20--a Googled search of "acceptable" indicated 20/40 or even 20/50 with correction. Post-surgical followup has been outstanding. Dr. Shuler has my strongest recommendation.

Doctor Shuler took time to keep me informed as to the steps required for treatment for my detached retina, Dr. Shuler kept me up to date on what I could expect from the recovery process and answered all my question in ways I could understand.

This entire office has been extremely friendly, comforting and has made what could be a very scary situation so much easier to deal with. We appreciate Dr. Shuler's kindness in explaining everything he is doing to make sure I understand.

At 83 when I go to Dr. office it's like I have taken a time machine from the 30's, where I saw people going blind and my child hood friends being sick and dying; to a wonderful future where we are light years ahead of such problems. The office is filled with the latest equipment and the greatest technicians, who explain everything and make the visit like seeing an old friend. Then when all the data is collected Dr, Shuler comes in to complete the visit preforming whatever needs to be done.

Professional caring surgeon; Personable and his competency is beyond compare; Excellent communication skills with patients...explains it all from beginning to end and what to expect during post op care.
