About Dr. Robert J S Mack
Reviews for Dr. Robert J S Mack
I will not return to him for any further eye care! After seven weeks into tests and medications, there is no improvement. I believe he has the wrong diagnosis. He has ordered outside tests and scans that I believe were unnecessary. He was always very short with the visit and never explained results of tests.

We have gone to Dr. Mack for years. He saved my husband's eye after a horrific accident. We highly recommend him.
Dr. Mack is a wonderful, caring, Doctor. I had cataracts in both eyes. He corrected both and saved my vision.

staff was great everything went really well
Dr. Mack wanted to do an iridotomy on my teenage daughter suspecting glaucoma and scared the daylights out of her. He also requested a very expensive MRI with contrast, her first time with an IV. The test was unnecessary, the diagnosis incorrect, and the second opinion specialist we sought out was so aggravated with his incompetence that she quite appropriately bawled him out in a letter for his alarmist attitude. Furthermore, he sent my elderly father-in-law to an ER many miles away (during the pandemic) telling him that something was "very wrong" with him. The ER released him. What does that tell you? With more than 30 1-star reviews here, why would you even consider seeing this so-called doctor?
Very bad experience. Never prepared for surgery . Made to go through many hoops for many months and cancels surgery 1 week before . Reschedules it and cancels again 4 days before. So much arranging and rearranging., Not a man of his word.
My husband made me change doctors because he felt that he was very arrogant. Also I would have to wait 2 hours to see him each time I went. New doctor I have for 2 years is fine and I don't wait so long each time I go. Mack overbooks patients.
Christina the receptionists is welcoming and friendly. Such a way with people. Kris was patient and non rushing. Emilina was patient and explained everything the doctor ordered in a pleasant manner. Appointment was on time, no long sitting abandoned in waiting room. Friendly front desk. All ppl including assistants and technicians I had contact with were professional, explaining what tests are performed etc. Dr Mak nailed down the origin of my problem explained with images on screen, performed immediately a small procedure (that many others would require another appointment to milk insurance companies) to get me relief. Told me what not to do to escalate symptoms. To my big surprise I was even provided with a page and a half report of his findings, tasks performed, medicine and instructions. This was my first visit to this doctor and my biannual check for ocular hypertension. Dr Mack told me that I had narrow angles in both of my eyes and that I needed vision preserving operation called Iridotomy. He stated that if I didn’t have this done I would go blind. The operation did not lower the pressure. I went for the operation for the second eye and got into an argument with the tech who was about to prepare me for a wrong operation. I finally convinced her to look at my previous operation and she finally stated that they had scheduled me for a wrong procedure. Luckily the operation could not be done that day and I sought a second opinion from a Glaucoma specialist who stated that although I had narrow angles the operation was not necessary. I got a thorough exam and was told that I don’t have Glaucoma. The specialist told me that the procedure did not lower the pressure likely because it was not necessary. I’m questioning Dr Mack’s motivation to scare people to have this done.
If I can give this doctor ZERO stars I would. I came to this doctor to seek relief for my Subconjunctival Hemorrhage but got out feeling a lot worse because of his diagnosis (he purposely misdiagnosed me and recommended an invasive procedure which I don’t need). He misdiagnosed me with Bilateral Narrow Angle Glaucoma and told me to undergo Laser Iridotomy otherwise I will go blind. Fortunately, I trusted my instincts and sought for a second opinion that same day. Gonioscopy and a more objective test which is Anterior segment OCT was done to properly check my angles. Both tests revealed I am not anywhere near narrow angle glaucoma. What if I entirely put my trust to this doctor?, then the unnecessary procedure would probably have done me more harm than good. Doctors are blessed with a special talent to heal and not to cause harm. I guess this doctor forgot his Hippocratic oath. When in doubt ALWAYS seek for a second or even third opinion. So, NO I don’t recommend this doctor to anyone!

Dont go to this doctor guys. They have so many Medicare patients that Doctor does not have anytime to see the patients. He monkey around each room for few min and try to cover many patients as he could so that he can profit. They never see patients on time and always running at least couple of hours late per the original appt. Never ever go to this doc again. Dont go to this doctor guys. My mom went to see Dr. Mack for her eye infection, but was not a very pleasant experience. He pressured my mom to do laser surgery(not related to eye infection) right way, and when my mom refused, Dr. Mack was upset. We felt very uncomfortable around him. We aren’t going to see him again.
His license should be revoked. He scammed me in believing that I needed laser surgery before I was blinded by fluid building up causing enough pressure to burst my Retinas. Also, this condition was caused by my Diabetes and assured my the procedure would be covered 100% by my insurance. Well I knew some was wrong when I sat in the recovery area with 8 others recovering from laser surgery. Then I began receiving bills for the 100% covered procedure. I have seen several doctors since. All stated this surgery was bogus and totally unnecessary. Diabetes does not create this condition. They told me that they may perform this surgery only about once a year. Thank God there is no long term damage - which is why this guy gets away with scamming almost a dozen surgeries a day. Beware of this crooked and dangerous doctor!!! His license should be revoked. Best Doctor whole family and friends have been with Dr Mack for years.
I am a patient of Dr. Mack's for some 7 years or so. Dr. Mack is an outstanding and brilliant eye doctor. He is frank and concise in his remarks. He is respectful and probing in his obtaining of history. He is diligent and comprehensive in his workup and care of eye problems. His talents are normally seen at high end academic centers, but I am happy he he practices locally. He had diagnosed me with elevated eye pressures and performed a laser iridotomy which relieved constant frontal headaches I had for more than two decades. I read some of these reviews and I understand they are likely former employees or disgruntled persons who are asked to pay the due balances for their care. I am a doctor myself and understand where these negative reviews come from and they are usually never from patients. That being said, anyone can have a difficult day and be less than perfect in their approach to a difficult patient. I never hesitate to send patients to Dr. Mack because as a patient myself in his practice I know firsthand how good the care is that he delivers. Dr. Mack is one of the good guys. Dr Mack has been great treating my recurrent Corneal erosions. This has been going on for a long time and other Doctors treated it symptomatically. Dr Mack got to the root and cured it. Additionally he suggested (strongly) that I get CPAP. This has been so helpful in my overall health. Wait times can be as little long but having worked in healthcare I understand why this happens and with a Dr of his reputation he is in high demand.

I came to Dr. Mack in 2015 for a second opinion on a genetic, not very much serious condition in my eyes (called Corneal granular Dystrophy). Other doctors before suggested to leave it alone since it's not interfering much with my vision that was 25/20 in both eyes. they suggested to keep using eye drops and try to keep my eyes hydrated. However, when Dr. Mack checked my eyes, he made my condition look like an emergency, he claimed it will cause infection in my eyes in the future if I don't act on it. he talked me through the PTK procedure claiming that he does these procedures left and right and are easy and have no side effects. He also suggested that I need to do a PTK every 3 years for this condition because it will keep coming back. I believed and trusted him because he seemed very positive and confident and up to date with the new advancements in this technology: I agreed to have him operate on my left eye, which was my life biggest mistake. the PTK polished the granulas but it gave me FAR SIGHTED VISION AND STIGMATISM: MY VISION IN MY EFT EYE HAS BEEN 20/150 since then!!!!!!!!! I've been going in and out the clinic for the past 3 years now trying to find out how they can help me with that. i paid a lot of money on eye glasses that never worked because of the big difference in vision between both eyes now. Not one time, did Dr Mack sat down with me and apologized for what he did or tried to find practical solutions to help me cope with my almost blind eye. He didn't even want to see me or talk to me because he never wanted to address the side effects the surgery gave me. Instead, he will be bringing students in the room to brag to them about this great technology without telling them the whole truth about what he did. All three ophthalmologists that arenot related to the clinic told me that they don't use PTK because it's risky and not efficient for the condition I have. After many arguments with Dr Mack, he told me last week there is nothing he can do for my eyes and gave me a referral to go to the UIC instead. From my personal dramatic experience, I don't recommend this dr or his clinic to any body. This is a butcher doctor that doesn't give a damn about anything else besides getting rich over these laser and PTK surgeries. I have a lawsuit in court going on against him, still in process. Please think twice and seek other professional opinions if he ever suggested any laser treatment for your eyes. You can't imagine how much frustrated I feel everyday with my vision at work and in life. this completely changed who I am for real. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or if you have a similar condition, or if you need more details. I will be more than happy to answer any questions for you. One of the most disorganized, incompetent doctors and staff I have ever seen. Zero respect for people’s time. Do not bother! Only ended up here because the last office was sold to them. Horrible is only word
My mother, my wife and I all are patients of Dr. Mack. He found an issue in me that is completely asymptomatic that could have lead to possible blindness. Dr. Mack takes a very thorough holistic approach to assessing eye health as part of one's overall health. He diagnosed in my mother a retinal issue that was treated but also suggested she have a lung scan due to what caused my her eye problem. Because of that scan, it was discovered she had stage 1 lung cancer. Dr. Mack saved my mother's life.

Dr. Mack and his staff have provided me with caring and excellent treatment of my OCP. His diagnosis and treatment has saved my eye sight. Due to the complex cases, such as mine that he handles, occasionally the wait times can be significant. However, I have learned that this can sometime happen due to the time required to try to preserve an individual patient's eye sight. Again, I cannot over emphasize how much I appreciate the care that he has given me.

Kind, considerate and competent doctor. Definitely consider him for your next phaco.
Dr. Mack did monovision eye surgery on me in 2006. I am one of the few people I know over 50 who doesn't need reading glasses. I have loved the freedom this surgery gave me. I now need correction in my distance eye and my eye doctor said patients with eye surgery often can't wear contacts because of scarring. After looking at my eyes, he said they were perfect - no scars - and if I hadn't told him about the surgery, he would not have known.
Nice place but I've been here for 1 1/2 hours and my eye exam is still not done.
I am a very happy long term patient of Dr. Mack. He did my PRK surgery back in 2003. Since then, I have been having my annual checkups there. They have top notch equipment. The staff is pragmatic, friendly and punctual.
Dr. Mack was very professional. It is obvious he is an excellent physician. I will be returning.

I've gone to many Doctors over the years who couldn't help me. I was always in a lot of pain until I met Dr. Mack. I have severe dryness in my both eyes for 46 years. I was young when it happened. I can't believe I have no more pain and I can go threw the day without blurred vision and pain. A great Dr. and a very kind man. He'll see you if a problem arises with you eye with out hesitation. His staff is so nice. I'd recommend him to anyone he's the best !

Worst bedside manner. Zero empathy. Doesn't care about his patients nor does he remember you...
Personal , respectful and an excellent surgeon.
Money makers. High prices, low quality, poor bedside manner. They purposely make you feel you're going blind so they can soak you on every visit.. 4 visits and almost a thousand bucks (insurance is a joke - they pay the co-pay, haha). Never again. N e v e r!

I took my Mother to Dr. Robert Mack in Hoffman Estates, IL to discuss her increasing difficulty with double vision. Dr. Mack said he does not specialize in double vision, but could refer us to a doctor. During Dr. Mack’s exam he indicated a lens from a past cataract procedure was needing a maintenance type procedure. Dr. Mack said the lens can move and cause great discomfort. At that time my Mother had no discomfort. He indicated the laser procedure would take only few minutes. There was no dialog about alternative methods or risk to the eye. The follow up appointment, after the laser procedure, resulted in blurry vision to the eye. Dr. Mack suggested glasses before even looking at the eye to see if there was a problem. Prior to the procedure my Mother could see clearly, even with the double vision, but the procedure resulted in blurry vision in that eye. I was surprised and concerned. I asked Dr. Mack how this happened and why this risk was not discussed prior to the procedure. Dr. Mack responded in an agitated manner as if his work is being questioned. He treated us as if we were ungrateful and talked to us as if needing glasses was the problem. He literally said “I am ready to open Champaign and celebrate because I saved your mom from blindness.” When I said, “I didn’t expect blurry vision”, he replied with “Neither did I” and walked out of the room leaving us confused. Dr. Mack never mentioned possible blindness in the previous visits. We felt Dr. Mack should have been more detailed about the laser procedure and covered possible risks. This experience was so unnerving that we will no longer see Dr. Mack and seek another ophthalmologist. The majority of Dr. Mack’s procedures are probably successful and end with satisfied patients, but if you are not satisfied there is no reassurance or discussion. Dr Mack was very pleasant and professional.
Although Dr. Mack and his team are very professional there are definitely issues regarding over scheduling of patients. I have had four appointments over a five month period and have waited in excess of a hour past my appointment time on each occasion. This really is not acceptable and I am looking for a new doctor.

My husband has gone to Dr. Mack for over 13 years since he had an eye injury and had a cornea transplant. He is a fantastic doctor, thanks to him my husband has been able to go this long with his 1st transplant and has not required a 2nd one yet. I recently started going to another Dr. in the office and have been really happy with all my dealings with her. Great place and great people to deal with!
I've been seeing Dr. Mack for two years. I had closed angle glaucoma which Dr. Mack immediately diagnosed, and fixed. For eight months earlier, I was going to an eye doctor I thought was competent, but who missed this very important diagnosis. Since then, Dr. Mack has diligently checked my eye pressures, etc. to make sure my eyes remain healthy. There is a long wait, but if you make appointments early it's not a problem. Dr. Mack is an excellent and thorough Doctor.

Frustrating experience with this Eye Center. First of all, I was made to wait an hour during my first appointment and only after I complained to the front desk after one hour, did I get seen within 10 minutes. Then my pharmacy sent them a pre-authorization request form which they were supposed to fill out and send to my insurance company. They misplaced the form not once, but twice ! Which resulted in a delay in me continuing with the treatment sequence which Dr. Mack had prescribed. Terrible
