About Dr. Robert J Huler
Reviews for Dr. Robert J Huler
Listened to my concerns and explained all my options and helped me to have a clear picture of the surgery decided. Looking forward to after the surgery.
Dr. Huler was on point! He was personable. He talked about real life issues related to my ailment. He was also very knowledgeable.
I had a strep infection. It settled in my spine, he made an 18 inch incision and got it all out saving my life in the process. I had nine fusions done, and it took away my chronic back pain. He does excellent work.
If I could give 0 stars I would. Arrogant, unsympathetic, no bedside manner. He had his PA examine my spouse, came in and looked at x-rays, and thought he knew the whole case and dismissed his pain immediately because nothing is broken. Everyone’s pain level is relative according to their situation, not according to text book definitions. If I could give 0 stars I would. Arrogant, unsympathetic, no bedside manner. Dr. Huler preformed a spinal fusion with titanium rods for a broken C2, and damaged spinal cord. He personally called me when I had questions. Lisa who is his right hand is also amazing. Both Dr.’s are extremely professional, knowledgeable, and caring. I highly recommend them. I don’t think there is a better Dr anyone could find.
Great job Dr. Huler and team! My lower back surgery was a 100% success! Thanks for a great job and giving me back my life. Highly recommend Mark Bayley
Dr. Huler did a fantastic job on my lower back surgery. Very knowledgeable, and treated my case with care and compassion. Highly recommend Dr. Huler. He gave me back my life!

Nurse practitioner spent approx 10 minutes with me doing simple tests and looking at mri. Dr. Huler came in and spent approx 60 seconds telling me to go to pain management. I assume he looked at my mri and X-ray. I’ve never been to an orthopedic dr before so maybe this is the way they are. Was not impressed at all and feel like I wasted my money. Had spinal fusion surgery with Dr. Huler in March of 2019. I have never been out of pain since - in fact my pain has significantly worsened since having the surgery & I now have a lot of nerve damage caused by the surgery. As many of the other reviews stated, he was arrogant & impersonal during my original consult before surgery. He only provided me with two options - have surgery or live with my pain. So of course, I chose surgery, & I thought maybe he was just not good with bedside manner. But my grandma had minor spine surgery with him & had recovered well - so I forged ahead. It has been the worst decision of my life... I wish I had done more research & chosen a surgeon I could trust. I am sure Dr. Huler knows his trade, but he has become exceptionally jaded & treats all patients the exact same way once diagnosed. Well every person is different. We experience things differently, our bodies react differently & we experience pain differently. It is extremely arrogant & lazy to simply treat everyone the same and tell them they will be just fine - despite them telling you otherwise. After my surgery he basically wanted nothing to do with me, however I was in the worst pain of my entire life. I still have panic nightmares about the pain I experienced after my surgery. When I first woke up they had ?forgotten? to hook me up to the morphine or pain meds... so I awoke practically paralyzed with pain. I only stayed in the hospital overnight which was a mistake.... because once they sent me home he only gave me a "strong" dose of Tylenol for my pain. I had a 360 degree spinal fusion. They cut me open from front to back - I have a scar in my abdomen & a scar on my lower back. So they basically skewered me all the way through my body. And those first few weeks of recovery I couldn't sleep & I screamed every time someone helped me move so I could go to the bathroom. I spent weeks crying all day long. This isn't good for anyone's health let alone someone recovering from major surgery. I also had gauze matted to my back incision because it was plastered with surgical glue. My boyfriend spent several hours digging the gauze out of my wound while I was bent over a sink in our bathroom sobbing. When I got my stitches removed the nurse couldn't get all the gauze or glue out of my incision & had to ask for help. She told us she had never seen anything like it before. Of course, I called Dr. Huler and Lisa many many times. I tried to get some more pain medication so I could sleep and be able to move without screaming. I had been sliced open from front to back & practically had no pain management. I now know what it was like back in olden times when people were javelined. Dr. Huler said because it was my first surgical experience, I couldn't possibly know what extreme pain felt like...what?! He and Lisa refused to provide any further pain relief or even refer me to a pain doctor. I found out too late that they do not believe in providing pain meds.... so if you like being in excruciating pain, Dr. Huler is your guy! I also tried to get some guidance on support after my surgery because he never referred me to physical therapy or anyone to assist with recovery. He simply said that I was young and I would heal. That ended up not being the case and I kept having pain and a lot of issues - but he did not want to deal with me. I eventually went to OrthoIndy management and explained how I felt completely unsupported, dismissed and quite frankly neglected after letting this man make permanent and life changing alterations to my body....I was told they could not do anything for me. So I spent thousands of dollars, probably millions of tears and continue to be in severe pain - nerve pain brought on by the surgery.... all for nothing. Dr. Huler is not a doctor I would ever recommend, even to my worse nemesis. He ruined my life at age 30. And OrthoIndy management /higher-ups just continue to enable his behavior, and he will keep destroying people's lives one surgery at a time. Someone should really put a stop to his arrogance and negligence. Had spinal fusion surgery with Dr. Huler in March of 2019. The Dr. wasVery informative explained my condition to me and what steps we needed to take to get me well. I was very pleased with Dr. Huler.
He’s simply the best, I’ve wasted so much time and money with injections and physical therapy over the years. I finally found a physician who was able to see the issue, recommend surgery to relieve the issues, preform the surgery and instantly it solved my back disc issue. Dr. Huler will be my ortho surgeon forever going forward.
I've had two spinal fusion performed by Dr. Huler, 8 years apart and for different reasons. I wouldn't trust my spine with anyone else! My family has a genetic tendency to have disc issues and 3 of us have been patients with him. He's very knowledgeable and does a great job.
If I could give a 0 I would. He was very rude, would not listen, kept interrupting and saying I think way too much. I actually went to the desk and asked to be paired with another doctor for another opinion.
I will never go back to Ortho Indy for a surgery. He sent me home after one night in unbearable pain and changed nothing to help me and the staff would not contact doctors about me screaming and crying from the fusion. So sad ,but I will never be back there or any doctors once I'm through this and hope no one else has to experience what I did, and I wait two hours every time I'm at a office visita I will never go back to Ortho Indy for a surgery. While certainly his bedside manner needs work, I did not get “butt hurt” or take offense. I found Dr Huler, his NP, and staff to be efficient and thorough. They spent time with me, quickly told me my options and thoughts on next steps in my treatment, answered my questions and sent me on my way. A doctor who is a SPECIALIST will not typically sit and BS and handhold patients not getting enough sympathy at home. The small town Docs in Indiana do sometimes have time to chat you up at length, but this should NEVER be expected of a Specialist in any specialty. They are extremely busy, and don’t have the luxury of close personal relationships with all of their patients. Give the guy a break! He comes highly recommended and I do the same! Thank you Dr. Huler. I got relief from extreme pain and I am grateful and hopeful for a full recovery.
Didn't have to wait long, Explained symptons, did some testing, took some x-rays, Discussed problem went over treatment. Therapy is making a difference.
Doctor Huler is a real Doctor ! About 20 yrs ago he went on faith that there was a real problem with my Husband. He listened & believed him- he went in and low & behold there were none spurs on the nerve. Thank God for Doctors such as him!!! This review is long over due! I get sick of patients wanting their butts kissed , or are fakes and expect to have credibility. He is a brilliant Doctor!! If you're legitimate, you will LOVE him. Doctor Huler is a real Doctor ! Dr. Huler is one of the greatest cervical surgeons I've ever met. Yes he is short and to the point. Surgery from your brain stem through all of your cervical is nothing to take lightly. He does explain things but you must pay attention. He has operated on me twice in my cervical area. He is the best. I would never think of going to some other Doctor. Keep up the great work. Dr. Huler and his entire staff are very knowledgeable in the type of care that is needed for your care for better health.*****
Dr. Huler shattered my high opinion of Orthoindy. I had visits at Orthoindy 25 years ago with the best doctor in the world and expected high standards, but how wrong I was. He did not even have a chart or know anything why I was there though they had my CT myelogram info. He gave me a once over and said my right hip was my problem and needed x-rays. Sent me there while he reviewed my myelogram. More confusion when I returned to the room and he went over it with no regard what the report said but a consensus of major surgery. Said L2-3 fusion was cause and he would bypass this and do fusion at the remaining vertebrae. I said if L2-3 was the problem how would bypassing it help me. He said he could not perform a miracle but it would give me about 70% improvement in my facet syndrome-like pain. I have no trust in his opinion and I resent him making me waste my scarce health dollars on needless x-ray and his opinion. He is a huge disappointment and Orthoindy should be ashamed.
Didn’t want to listen to me, waited forever, asked why I’m there. Didn’t get to ask the questions I wanted too. Told me to take Over the counter medicine for the pain.
Dr. Huler was my second opinon. My husband and I were both very impressed. He took the tims to explain what my problem was and what could be done to help me. When he left the room I turned to my husband and said "he will be my surgeon". I'm two weeks post op and recovering well.
Did a great job of explaining the decisions he made and answered questions.

Inconsistent information, brushed off my son's scoliosis as not treatable. Now he is requiring a spinal fusion procedure due to his non-treatment. We saw him three times and was brushed off all three times as non-treatable scoliosis. Please do not waste your time with this doctor, seek other opinions.
Made me wait over an hour. Arrogant, dismissive and patronizing.
So now I know it not just me. Condescending, impersonal, etc... All if it, YES I completely agree!! Top all of that off with the whopping $395.00 bill I received because of my high deductible plan. My visit was 5 months ago, I'm still paying and still annoyed. HE’S THE WORST!!!
Was extremely discouraged at the consultation! Was trying to get a little more information in regards to the non invasive surgery. Dr. Huler immediately said “ There’s no such thing as noninvasive surgery”.. Was extremely dissatisfied in his demeanor! Would not recommend!! MP Was extremely discouraged at the consultation! Unpleasant interpersonal style. Presumptuous, condescending and irritable during consultation. Perhaps he does best with unconscious patients and/or males. Or perhaps he was just having a bad day. I am struggling to imagine that he would be this obnoxious and rude to patients on a daily basis. I have had trouble ever since allowing this Dr to do a spinal fusion on me. I was supposed to have a small 1 inch incision on the front of my neck. Instead he cut my throat approx. 5 to 6 inches across like he slit my throat all the way. I woke up during surgery as well. Please look at his hands. I do not recommend this so called Dr.
Huler must be the best orthopedic surgeon in Indy. He certainly doesn’t have time for anyone who doesn’t need his services. Far too much more important things to do with his time. I have chronic back pain that has become acute in recent months. My family and my chiropractor were very concerned . My chiropractor suggested that I get a second opinion about this pain in my spine. So immediately I texted a friend of mine who has worked at Ortho Indy for 12+ years and asked who was a good “spine guy.” He immediately texted back Huler’s name so I scheduled an appointment. I spoke with his nurse practitioner when I got there. She was fantasistic. Her name is Lisa. Then she either spoke to the doctor or he looked at her notes, but I heard him through the paper thin walls dictating my case into a recorder. He said that I self-diagnosed depression, he said that I self-diagnosed ankylosing spondylitis. Neither of these things are what I had told the nurse. Then he walked into the examining room and greeted me with, “I’m a spine SURGEON. Your doctors referred you to me to see if you need spine surgery, and clearly you don’t.” That was BEFORE he had X-rays. I don’t know how he knew that without even looking at me or talking to me, I guess because I walked in on my own volition! Or I passed the exam the nurse practitioner gave me. I don’t know. But since I didn’t need HIM he didn’t have time for me. I couldn’t finish a single sentence and he told me I was a healthy, “normal girl.” Ok?! That’s great. But I have been in a LOT of pain and that’s not normal. Neither is my X-ray! So needless to say, I was less than impressed. I’m glad I have a great primary care physician. I’ll go to him and he can refer me to someone who’s willing to listen and find ways to help me. Certainly not Dr. Huler. I’d obviously mistaken him for someone who cares. Dr Huler did a spinal fusion on me. I was told I would have a small 1 inch incision on my neck. I woke up during surgery and it was chaotic. When surgery was over I woke up and the entire front of my neck looked like someone had slit my throat clear across I haven't been the same since. Just examine this mans hands. They aren't the hands of a good surgeon. Very arrogant as well. Worst Dr I've ever seen.
I hope thousands of people read about what a terrible “doctor” Huler is. Arrogant, uncaring, never follows up, rude, inconsiderate, egotistical. Do not trust him! Please keep your family, loved ones, friends away from him.
Dr. Huler performed miracles for my cervical spine pain several years ago so when I recently developed similar issues in my lumbar spine Dr. Huler was my go to person. My pain issues and mobility have been greatly improved. Prior to finding Dr. Huler I had undergone several procedures for my cervical spine fusions and every one resulted in superinfections witn non-fusion issues. I attribute this to the unparalleled cleanliness of the facility and Dr. Huler's impeccable expertise. I am a nurse.
Robert Huler insulted my partner before requiring return to work until failed surgery. Spent 18 seconds saying partner would be better than before, now unable to walk properly due to greater pain, as well as new incontinence and defecation issues. I have friends who have suffered at his hands as well; misdiagnosis, rude treatment, the list goes on. Not a healer. This man has taken much from many. Nevertheless I forgive him everything. Once this post is accepted, I will think of him no more.

I have had one surgery from Dr Huller where rods and screws were required and before I was healed from that I blew a disk and he didn't believe me and it was murder getting him to take care of me. To his credit, when he found out I did blow a disk he said he was sorry... Years later I have been in bed for 4 wks I brought an MRI of my spine for him to look at He only looked at one spot and didnt go any further on the MRI and said my back was fine, I am in so much pain I'm going somewhere else..

dr huler is an awesome back surgeon, he has done a lower back procedure on me with good results and recently a procedure because my spine was twisting, so far with great results, i have a big scar but it was worth it, hopefully i won't ever have to have anymore done, he is a very precise, caring and compassionate dr along with his assistant lisa, i would never go to anyone else except him, great guy
My daughter is in her mid 20s and had a herniated disc. She ended up with Dr Huler through Ortho Indy emergency care. Her pain never went away after surgery, and he acted like she was lying about it. Dr Huler brushed her off after surgery and basically said she was exaggerating her pain. She cried in front of him- no emotion from Dr. He sent her back to work where she stands for 12 hours/day with a re-herniated disc. We went to another surgeon who was FANTASTIC- she had to have an addl surgery

Dr. Huler is an excellent surgeon, he isn't much on bedside manner. He comes across as condescending to his patients. Speaking with other people in the waiting area, he isn't a people person, but does good work if you can get past the way he presents himself.
Dr. Huler. Operated on my lower back. The surgery was successful with an immediate reduction in my back pain. Dr. Huler was very professional throughout our office visits and the surgery process. He was totally focused on the operation he was about to perform. His confidence and professionalism made my family and I quite comfortable with the procedure.
Over 9 years, Dr. Huler performed 4 surgeries eventually fusing me from C2 to T1 using cadaver bone. He and Dr. Kylene Huler saved my life and my sanity. He even detected the presence of bilateral kidney cancer. If I could give him more than 5 stars, I would.

First time I saw him, he brushed me off. Sent me for a MRI just in case there was really something wrong. One week later he calls and tells me he needs to speak to me about the MRI results, sounding urgent. He tells me to call back with my daytime number where I could be reached. Did so the next day. They make an appt for me to see him. He never called; went to appt. After waiting 90+ minutes after my appt. time, I left. Over two weeks later, I still don't have my test results. Malpractice?

This man is a joke. He forgot about his oath he took. He is a work comp Doctor and lied and put me through hell until the work comp board sent me to a real spine surgeon who surgically repaired my spine. I wouldn't take my worst enemy to this doctor. He is crooked and will break your back before he lets an insurance adjuster spend money to fix you correctly. Don't trust him! Ask for an Independant exam! He's not a trustworthy Doctor!
I had back surgery about 10 years ago and Dr. Huler was my doctor. He had to work around some cysts(that weren't operable) in order to operate on my back. I had been in a lot of pain. I am SO happy to report that the pain is all but gone. I had 3 levels of rods and pins put in and the surgery was a great success. Dr, Huler was also very professional, conscientious and his caring about his patients was obvious. I would highly recommend Dr. Huler, and I have on several occasions.
