About Robert J. Berens
Reviews for Robert J. Berens
Dr Berens was very attentive, took his time to examine and then was informative on the issues and options. His staff was very supportive and friendly.
Dr. Berens is very knowledgeable about back pain. I had gone to several doctors before treating with Dr. Berens. He was able to diagnose and treat my facet syndrome with medial branch blocks and ultimately radio frequency ablation.
I have had numerous epidurals for back pain, most of which were performed by Dr. Berens. Other experiences were not as pleasant. Dr. Berens and his staff are extremely attentive to details and the care of the patient. I have never had a bad experience.

Effective consultation for complex pain due to back abnormalities. Staff were helpful and responsive.
It was 13 years between my first spinal epidural and my second. Dr. Berens is awesome and so is his team of professionals!

Great medical office, wonderful and warm experience from start to finish. Friendly and helpful. Appreciate Dr. Berens taking time to go over the diagnosis clearly and treatment options for my husband. HIGHLY recommended.

I have been a patient, at the TMC Pain Clinic, for over six years. Doctor Berens is very knowledgeable and understanding about the pain one is having. The staff is very welcoming and caring. To anyone, who is in pain, I highly recommend Dr. Berens and the TMC Pain Clinic.
I have been very pleased with the care provided by Dr. Berens and all the staff at the TMC Integrative Pain Center. Dr. Berens was both caring and knowledgeable in reviewing the particulars of my pain situation. He did not rush through either the initial exam or the subsequent procedures that were performed. He listened to my concerns and offered some helpful suggestions to further improve my outcomes. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone seeking control of their pain.
Dr. Berens at TMC Pain Clinic in Tucson provides exemplary physical, social-emotional and mental care related to pain management. He demonstrates a high level of expertise in his field. My results after treatment have proven Dr. Berens is someone I can trust to provide long term relief from my pain. He takes time to listen to my concerns and explains the cause of my pain in user friendly terms. Dr. Berens was recommended to me me by a friend and I believe that is among one of the highest referrals a professional can receive.
Dr Berens is always kind and compasionate but professional. He explains everything about why you have pain and what he can do to help. He explained my MRI and where he believes the pain is coming from He is honest about how much relief he can give you. He is positive and makes you feel very comfortable and calm. I highly recommend Dr, Berens. Making an appointment is easy and all the staff that I encountered were kind and professional form the front desk to all the nurses and technicians. If you are suffering pain go see him.
My husband has been seeing Dr for years. He has changed his quality of life 100 percent. So when I needed a pain specialist Dr Berens is the only dr I would see. He is extremely knowledgeable. He explains everything in a very professional manner. Highly recommend!!!

Worst doctor ever, he wasn't paying attention during my procedure because one of his male nurses was showing him a motorcycle he found on Craigslist. He ended damaging my spinal cord and I was partially paralyzed for months after my procedure. I immediately went into the hospital and this is how they located the spinal cord damage, which I DID NOT HAVE BEFORE. He wasn't even supposed to be anywhere near my spinal cord. After several years I still can not fully feel my right leg. This is not a common side effect for the type of procedure he was doing. He was in my C-Spine not my lumbar. I should have pursued him for medical malpractice but I was too busy trying to recover, doing PT to learn how to walk again. PLEASE JUST FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.... Dr. Berens is wonderful! I highly recommend him and the clinic staff. Over the course of several years I went to a pain clinic where patients were lined up for their procedure like material on a conveyor belt. It was in/out and on to the next patient without an opportunity to engage with the doctor. Dr. Berens takes time to read the patient's history, view X-rays, and review family history. He is thorough, focused on your well-being, treatment and outcome. He is also plain speaking which I appreciate. The atmosphere in the clinic is friendly, very helpful and cheerful. The staff reflects a dedicated clinic with good patient outcome. Dr. Berens is wonderful! I highly recommend him and the clinic staff. My visit was disgraceful. I was treated with the utmost rudeness and disrespect as well as my friend. Dr Barron's is nothing more than a baboon. He is unprofessional, rude, obnoxious, self-centered and needs to be disbarred from his profession. He is a threat to the wellness of individuals who are seeking kind and considerate and helpful treatment
Not only did Dr Berens accidently injure me, he dismissed me as a patient. I could not recommend him for either his expertise or his bedside manner.
I've seen Dr. Berens for about 10 years now and I'm sad to say I will be parting ways. I saw him in December 2019 for about 15-20 mins after waiting about 30 mins in the lobby, which was fine by me. After speaking with me about my issues and having me stand up and lean backwards he decided to try a radio frequency for my back pain. This was the extent of or conversation and evaluation. I left the office and scheduled out the test about 3 weeks later. Within a week or so, my pain had subsided and I can only do the test when I'm in pain, so I had to cancel my appt. I paid my $60 copay, but then was shocked to get a bill in the mail for $261. This bill was for using a TMC office to talk with Dr. Berens. I felt like I was paying his rent for the space. Nothing justified someone paying so much for a visit. After several phone calls with the office I found out the paperwork was completely falsified to justify the bill. The doctor wrote in that he had spent over an hour with me, which was a complete lie. But it's my word against his, so what was I to do. Needless to say I lost a good physician over ridiculous fees by TMC/Dr. Berens office. I've seen Dr. Berens for about 10 years now and I'm sad to say I will be parting ways. Dr.Berens is the best! My family trusts him and refers him to everyone we know. Don’t know what we would do without his help
Dr. Berens thoroughly explained my back condition and outlined the many possible approaches to rectifying my problem. He takes the time necessary to hear my concerns and answers all my questions. He was adamantly recommended by my primary care physician.
Dr. Barens is a lifesaver! I was in intense pain when I went to his office. He was professional, caring and knowledgeable. He explained my options in layman terms and took the time to make sure I was comfortable with the treatment. I cant say enough good things about the care he gave me.
The first time I received care from Der. Berens was 10 years ago. I am currently seeing him again for lower back issues, this is my second visit in 6 weeks. Dr. Berens and his staff are awesome, never have to wait more then 5 minutes to see Dr. Berens. The staff is professional and friendly.
My husband, Michael, came to Dr Berens with debilitating back pain. The doctor recommended several courses of treatment, noting that total pain relief was not likely at my husband’s age (82) but offered hope and compassion, with the probability of some relief and and a better quality of life. Dr Berens is professional yet personable. He spent a great deal of time with us, explaining options and possible results, and ultimately helped my husband achieve a modicum of pain relief. Upon the advice of my GP, I consulted Dr. Berens regarding a number of extremely painful issues in my cervical and lumbar spine which had previously been diagnosed by MRIs. Based on my meetings with and, the procedure he then performed, it is my personal opinion that Dr. Berens is an extraordinary physician; clear, concise and, above all, with the ability to describe in a layperson's language, what he could, or could not do to ameliorate my condition. By the conclusion of my first visit he had gained my total trust when he recommended that he perform a Radiofrequency ablation (a procedure I had never heard of). He is personable, kind, caring, with a quiet sense of humor. His nursing staff "love him"; their words, not mine. And I can see why. The professionalism of his team, and their concern for my comfort was truly excellent. My grateful thanks to all of them. But above all my sincere thanks to Dr. Berens.
I was diagnosed with severe cervical spine degeneration 4 years ago. Being in tremendous pain, I researched many pain clinics. I wanted a doctor that had a dual medical degree in pain management and anesthesiology. Few fit my requirements. but Dr. Robert Berens was also affiliated with TMC Hospital. He was my choice. Dr. Berens explained to me my condition, options available, he listened to my input and together we made a customized pain management plan. He performed several tests before surgery. By doing this, assured precise surgical procedures for success. I have been total pain free ever since. Now I have lumbar issues. I went back to Dr. Berens. We are now in the testing phase. I know the results will be successful like before. I trust Dr. Berens and his fabulous staff to my pain free care.
Dr. Berens is my kind of doctor. He explains things in a way that I could understand, allowed my input and answered my questions. He has a very easy going demeanor while still being professional. And yes he mentioned my weight as well. But it wasn't mean spirited, it was just common sense.Thank you all your help Dr Berens.
He is outstanding in all area. His procedures relieved excruciating pain in SI and Lumbar area. So grateful for him!
Professional and a wonderful provider
Dr Berens is smart and knows exactly what is needed. I trust him and that’s not easy for me to say about most doctors In Tucson
Year ago April I was 70 lbs overweight, my A1c was very high, my kidney's were heading for failure, as well as other vital numbers and I was in pain. Dr Berens saved my life by taking the time and being very factual asked what was I doing to myself - it was a wake up call that I took very seriously. He explained that I had the option of turning all the bad numbers around and making them good again and that is exactly what I have done. I still have 30 more pounds to take off and I will, but it will take time. I did not go on a diet - but went on a change of thinking leading to a way of life that changed my eating habits, exercising and being more active. This doctor is the most caring doctor and I am very grateful that he took the time to help me change my life.
Dr Berens is amazing. He takes his time with his patients, you never feel rushed. He is professional, kind and putsYou at ease while in his office. He also has the most amazing staff all the way from the front desk to the nurses. I would recommend him to any friends or family members in a heartbeat he is that good.

I saw Dr. Berens several years ago and though he was was very forthcoming about the issue I had, he seemed very hopeful that a certain procedure would work very well for me. Knowing I was about to embark on another procedure that would not allow me to lay on my stomach at all I proceeded with this certain procedure and I am grateful to say it helped but for only 17 days. And when the back pain returned it came back 10 times worse. Fast forward to present day I am now still suffering from nerve issue problems in the area that Dr. Berens did the procedure, but have also had a surgical procedure done on my back in the same place as well. Could be a domino effect but Dr. Berens was helping with an S1 nerve root issue. Dr. Berens was a fantastic help for my back issues. over a few appointments he was incredibly courteous and helped my needs. would recommend.
Dr Berens is a thorough, compassionate doctor who explained in detail, the condition of my spine and the course of treatment to alleviate my pain. His office staff is attentive and friendly. Would be happy to recommend him.
I have had the pleasure of being a patient of Dr. Berens and he is not only helpful and informed, but he has superb technical skills that have allowed me to be almost pain free for a year following my last visit. I am impressed with his caring staff and their facility. I read some of the negative reviews and it is obvious that there are more underlying issues with some of these people that cannot be helped with only physical interventions. This clinic does not have mental health options and some people may be better served with a referral elsewhere. I am quite impressed with Dr. Berens and his staff and I would recommend them to anyone. Dr. Berens is highly professional, caring and efficient. Arthritis in my back was keeping me from many of my favorite activities - Dr. Berens gave me my life back. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Berens and two of his nursing staff, Jennifer and Manny, they are all simply wonderful.
My current medical problem is the second one Dr. Berens has treated. He has always been prompt and extremely informative about procedures. He is willing to answer any questions. He and all his staff have always been courteous, helpful, competent and caring. I would recommend his services to anyone who needs help with pain relief.
Dr Berens unethically targets potential patients based on their TMC medical records without their permission, and sends extremely misleading advertisements. Don't be fooled by the name of his "integrative" pain clinic: Dr Berens is a one-trick pony whose only method for pain treatment is with injections. Dr Berens' advertisement and office staff got my hopes up by describing how he develops a personalized plan to deal with all sorts of back pain with no prescriptions or narcotics. It was only after I went through the weeks-long process of getting a referral that I was called to schedule an appointment, and was asked what type of injections I wanted. After wasting my time and energy, my back pain is worse due to Dr Berens. What a creep. I've seen a few doctors for my condition. Dr. Berens spent more time with me today than anyone. He took the time to explain my condition. I'm a good judge of people and I felt he was as honest as anyone I have seen The office staff and the procedure could not have been better.

A fabulous doctor who takes the time to listen to the patient. This is very important in the current state of medicine, where doctors do not care enough to just listen to the patient's complaint. He is very knowledgeable and highly skilled in spine procedures. He treated me and relieved me of my pain, that many doctors had not been able to do. He not only is a great doctor, but has an excellent and caring staff. I would not hesitate to recommend him highly.

The worst experience ever. I would never recommend Dr. Berens to my worst enemy.
Complete waste of my time. Kept me waiting 45 minutes and then was condescending and patronizing. Told me all he could do for pain is steroid shots - seems rather narrow minded. I hit physical therapy and in a few weeks was nearly pain free.
He helped my husband's pain a lot.
I had a great experience, even though I am about 50 pounds over weight. I almost cancelled my appointment with Dr Betrns because of these reviews. A tech at my PT office talked me out of cancelling because Dr Berens is so good, plus the hospital -type setting is better than a Drs office for spinal injections. I am so glad I didn't cancel! Dt Berens only touched on the fact that added weight is so hard on the back. He was respectful, though. He was concerned and pleasant, maybe because of negative reviews. He tells it like it is and I feel so much better today for having seem him. I had a great experience, even though I am about 50 pounds over weight. I just want to warn people that if you are overweight and have to see a pain management doctor do not see Doctor Berens unless you want to be chastised about your weight. He is very opinionated about obesity and will not hesitate to let a patient know it's all your fault. I know first hand that being obese causes more pain in the body but doctors need to try and help us rather then make us feel awful and shamed. I have had doctors who have discussed my weight with me and have encouraged better behavior rather then shaming me till I cryed. Dr. Berens is the latter kind of doctor so be warned. I am writing all of this on behalf of my mother in law who he reduced to tears (at 73 years old) because of her weight. She has been barely able to move for the last 5 years and needs back surgery desperately. She suffers from depression as well and just this one visit will set her back emotionally for weeks. Thanks Dr. Berens, you have been no help at all. As far as his pain management expertise I have no comment. We will not be returning to his office ever again and look for someone who can express his medical opinion without demeaning and tearing down a persons self worth. I was almost afraid to go see this doctor from reading the other rather skewed reviews here. I was pleasantly surprised. What I liked about the visit: this doctor is extremely knowledgeable about the cause of different kinds of back pain. He spent time carefully teaching me what the source of my pain was and what were the smartest lowest risk options for addressing it. He recommended the book Foundations by Eric Goodman and recommended that a few short minutes everyday could have a massive positive effect as I age (I'm only in my 40's so prevention and proper care now will matter very much when I'm 80.) To everyone who is sensitive to discussions of weight: I'm sorry but the medical reality is that carrying extra weight from unneeded fat tissue on our bodies is the #1 cause of back pain in the US. When I went to my visit I saw only obese people in the waiting room and there was a special chair in the exam room that was 3 times as wide as a normal chair. It is a fact that pain can be massively improved if not entirely removed by lifestyle choices like losing weight and doing the proper exercises. I was many pounds heavier when my back pain and herniated disc were at their worst. I didn't want to live like that anymore. I watched documentaries like Hungry for Change, Forks over Knives and Chow Down. I learned how even though I wasn't eating a whole lot, WHAT I was eating was causing me to be overweight. This isn't an issue of blame fellow patients- its an issue of education and empowerment. Do you know what the lab protocol is to make an obese mouse for an experiment? To inject it with MSG. And MSG is hidden in most processed supermarket foods now under various names. I became a vegan (something I always wanted to do for love of animal kind) and embarked on living a whole foods plant based lifestyle. I learned from people like Dr. Collin Campbell and Dr. Fuhrman. I followed their advice for food choices and the weight melted off of me. I'm probably just like you- I had tried slimfast diets, calorie counting etc. Nothing will work until we remove the core ingredients in the sick Western world diet that makes us fat. Give it a shot. If you are committed, your pain will get better, you will feel amazing and embark on a whole new life. I plan to spend 10-15 min everyday for the rest of my life doing the simple exercises recommended in foundations because its that important. I plan to stay trim by eating a delicious vibrant whole foods plant based diet for the rest of my life. I want to be a vibrant joy filled old person, not someone miserable and doped up on medications. We have much more power over the problem of back pain and other obesity induced pains than we realize. Don't shoot the messenger: Dr. Berens is telling you the truth you do not want to hear so that you consider making changes to get better. He could be a bad doctor interested only in more and more procedures for personal profit. Instead, this doctor is telling you how to get better so you don't need procedures. You can do it! I was almost afraid to go see this doctor from reading the other rather skewed reviews here. I was pleasantly surprised. … More
