Richard Don Guyer

Today is 5/31/22. I had surgery on 5/26/22 ( 5 days ago ). Dr Guyer performed a hybrid....L5s1 fusion, L4L5 disc replacement. I have had back problems for 35 years and 1 surgery in 1998. I consider myself a 'back expert' because i have learned to live and work around the pain. Now, on to the review. From day 1 Dr Guyer made me feel comfortable and his staff was top notch. I know there is no such thing as a 'perfect' solution when it comes to back pain. However i do believe we bare the responsibility of maintaining good health (weight, blood sugar, moderate exercise, etc) and reasonable expectations from doctors. I selected Dr Guyer because of his successful work on Tiger Woods back. So here's my 100% honest results/review. I woke up from surgery...0 (zero) back pain, zero sciatica, zero tingling. Amazing to say the least. The only pain i had was my stomach incision. For the past 4 days, i have slept a lot, managed my recovery pain and nausea with medication. Today (day 5), the nausea is about 90% gone and my stomach incision pain is about a 3 (1= none, 10= severe). I am able to walk for 30 minutes now and no pain. My life has changed, it's been 35 years of fighting back pain. I met with about 5 different spine surgeons. Needless to say but I definitely picked the correct one. Dr Guyer was there for me on all points and he reminded me to stay grounded with realistic expectations. The negative reviews on this page are simply baffling to me. Dr Guyer, his staff, his expertise are are simply brilliant . Do not put if off any longer...go see Dr Guyer. I have included a photo so those of you who think this is a fake ad, will see it's legit. I am still sleeping on the floor (pad /carpet) because our bed is too soft, but no sciatica, no pain. Most soreness is gone from the incision. I look forward to long distance hiking in late summer/early fall in the mtns. Also, i lost about 9lbs during my first few days so that was a win! Today is 5/31/22. Former patient who developed several life threatening complications from surgery. The pre-surgery process was thorough and detailed, but once things went wrong from surgery there was no ownership. Any patient wants someone and their staff to give treatment not only when things are good, but most importantly when things go wrong.

Thanks to Dr Guyer and the staff at Texas Back Institute who did a L5-S1 fusion on my wife. Most professional experience ever. You know you are are at the right place as soon as you talk to them.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Guyer’s for many years now. He is without a doubt, the preeminent spine surgeon in this country. He and his staff are professional always, but are also very warm and caring at the same time. Couldn’t recommend Dr. Guyer and the TBI more.

Had the SB Charity in 2001. Full disc implant. Run as fast as you can from the pain! Guyer will say it’s your fault! Then you find out He knew it wasn’t my fault. So sorry to the patients that had this surgery because of FALSE results! Glad the disc didn’t cut into arteries in pelvic region! Guyer isn’t truthful and I hope someone finds a way to sue him! He walked into my last appt before surgery with about 100’s of pages marked for me to sign. Saying this is a FDA APPROVED surgery. You can’t sue the FDA and sign here because I’m sure You don’t want to sue Me. DO NOT sign without a Lawyer! There is no telling what this Man will do to advance Himself?! Which He has done on my spine! Can’t sue Him but can caution that next Patient He held my 3 year old in his arms and told Her I made Your Mom a bionic Women. Please don’t trust Guyer! I had a terrible experience from beginning to end with Dr Guyer. He did not give me enough time to review what was going to happen during the surgery, he did not carry various sizes of the disc replacement options, so I donor femur had to be used to create a disc, and the overall after care was horrendous. Plus, I PT was not even pushed as a way to help me heal. Ten years later, I can honestly say that I have been in pain every single day, I have needed medication to get through the pain after this surgery, Dr Guyer's bedside manner was little to none, and now that my body is rejecting whatever he put in my body, their office destroyed my surgical records (which by law they can, but in this day and age with the small amount of space this would have taken via a computer, this was unnecessary.) So, after ten years of pain, I am doing my due diligence to ensure the next surgeon is qualified, knows that I am allergic to something that was placed in there, and will look to ensure that there are no flaws in the original fusion. Dr. Guyer saved me - I could no longer live one day at a time, pain even interfered with my ability to distract myself. My back and leg were so painful I couldn’t sleep, focus or engage loved ones. Dr. Guyer and his staff accommodated me in and out of the office, they were clear with what I needed to do, and when it needed to be done. They scheduled me efficiently and I couldn’t have been more pleased with Dr. Guyer surrounding surgery. He was a gentleman to my family, and a precise practitioner in surgery evidenced by my outcome. Today I walk, work, play, and live on my own two feet. This man’s dedication and pursuit of excellence allows me to continue to experience a full life - a life free of pain. Richard Guyer is amazing, He did my surgery for artificial disk replacement 6 years ago of L4-L5 and L5-S1 and I have had no pain since. Upon meeting with Dr. Guyer he went over all the options in details and made sure I understood each option. I highly recommend him to anyone I know and even the ones I dont. My husband, who was 34 years old and in perfect health other than chronic back pain, underwent double disc replacement by Dr Guyer which resulted in numerous complications. We were extremely strict with his recovery however these complications still occurred which resulted in him loosing his career he had worked so hard for and us ultimately having to sell our home and move out of state to be back near my family for assistance. I urge anyone reading this to please do their homework and consider everything very closely before making the decision to have such a serious surgery. We were given probabilities and statistics going into surgery but expected nothing like this from the pre and post op conversations. Also once the complications occurred we were passed off because They felt the discs looked fine. This has completely changed our lives and is a situation we don’t know as a young couple that we will ever recover from.

First class staff! Dr. Guyer recommended for me 3 shots not surgery as another doctor recommended. Shots worked, pain is gone. I highly recommend Dr. Guyer.

When I entered the office everyone had so much compassion and was so helpful. I was in so much pain I was ready to commit suicide. Right away Dr. Guyer had me scheduled for surgery to help me and indeed he did. Great doctor. You would think you were his own flesh and blood as much compassion that he shows.

Dr. Richard Guyer is the worst kind of surgeon imaginable. Im 23 and ruined my back playing sports and running. I have had several failed back surgeries before finally finding the right surgeon in 2020. That surgeon was NOT Guyer, in fact Guyer was the single worst surgeon I have ever come across in my life. He is as arrogant and self assured as they come. Our first couple visits were actually productive right until surgery. When I had my operation he was rude to my father telling him "Go ask your wife how it went I talked to her" because my dad was flying home a little late from a business trip. Then he kicked me out of the hospital after 15 hours, wrote far too short of a pain med prescription and then wouldn't take my calls when my pain was so bad I couldn't walk. He caused so much damage to my spine that it took THREE TIMES the amount of work to fix his many mistakes. My new surgeon (Dr. Jamie Gottlieb of Denton) fixed it, medicated me properly and saved my quality of life.

Dr. Richard Guyer truly ruined my quality of life because of his botched surgery on my L4/L5. The fusion failed miserably, he wouldn't acknowledge it and left me in agony after years of back pain. I have had previous surgeons who didn't fix my back pain that I forgive and understand, after all surgery is not always an exact science. However, I truly cant stand how arrogant and unhelpful Dr. Guyer was towards me and my parents. Im 23 and a senior in college and have missed the past couple years because of my back/leg surgeries. Dr. Guyer operated on me in September of 2019. I was beyond excited, after all this was the miracle surgeon who fixed Tiger Woods! The day of the operation his calm disposition changed and turned into arrogance when my dad asked how everything went he said "Ask your wife, I told her" as if 2 minutes of his time was too much to ask for when he was coming home from a business trip. Dr. Guyer and his staff told me to leave after FIFTEEN hours of being in the hospital after a major surgery that left me with incisions in my stomach and spine. I went home in agony and couldn't contact him in any way. He wrote for 10 days of medicine when every surgery I have ever had before or since Guyer requires at minimum weeks at a time. He was simply uninterested with my care after he was done operating. I don't use the word "suffering" lightly, but I suffered in a way that was nothing short of living hell. Then the surgery failed and not only didn't fuse, but it collapsed my disc below causing the need for an additional fusion. I wish that was the extent of my injuries, but it is far from. I needed 3X the amount of surgical intervention with my new surgeon to fix all of Guyers mistakes. This included laminectomies, fusions and bone spur removals. It took months to find a new capable surgeon because Guyer gave me a complicated issue. He never once apologized or took any responsibility which doesn't surprise me. My other surgeons have apologized and try to help me correct the botched surgery but not Guyer, too proud or arrogant or thinks that opens him up to a lawsuit which we have no financial need to pursue. Enough time has passed that my new surgery is settling in, but I am still astonished at Guyers lack of sincerity or care in any way. I am as responsible and active in my recovery as I could possibly be but was treated like a stupid kid who wasn't taking things seriously enough. I have missed an entire academic year of school along with internships and tens of thousands in scholarships because of my prolonged absence. I hope you read this "stupid kids" review and take it to heart. Dr. Jamie Gottlieb of Denton saved my quality of life with his operations on me in the spring of 2020. He is the most talented surgeon I have ever met, but still treats patients with respect and dignity unlike Dr. Guyer. It bothers me I still have to leave 1 star for ole Richard. Thanks again for putting my family and I through a miserable year of needless suffering!

Dr. Guyer is as good a doctor as you'll ever find. I have played golf most of my life and had a lot of trouble playing in the last five years because of lower back pain. I now have two artificial discs in my lower back and my life has been restored! 12 weeks out from surgery.... no pain and playing golf again better than ever. Richard Guyer is an amazing surgeon who performed a disc replacement at the C5-6 and C6-7 for me. I had pain radiating from my shoulders to my fingers, numbness in both hands. Unimaginable pain that I dealt with for months. I was pain free the same day surgery was completed. He was always very professional and personal. Explained all of my options and never pushed surgery. I'm so glad I had the surgery done and would do it again. The front staff and nurses were also great. My six year old daughter loved going with me to my office visits. The staff's interaction with her was amazing and made her feel so comfortable. I can't say enough amazing things about how great the staff is for Richard Guyer. I owe so much to Dr. Guyer for relieving my pain and giving me my life back. To be able to hug my wife and child without pain is because of the great work performed by Dr. Guyer and his team in the operating room. Dr. Guyer is OUTSTANDING!!!! I have sent patients and relatives to him and he is a 10 Excellent, Kind and Confident. He has an impeccable way with people and spends time with his patients to answer their questions. I also support surgery with technologies and he is always so respectful and engaged. He is interested in new technologies and is open to new technology which is very important. He treats the industry manufacturers like GOLD! You couldn't ask for more. 5 STARS A+++++

Dr. Guyer has performed 2 surgeries on me. Both were life changing successes that transformed me from near invalid pain levels to no pain and business as usual. He has great compassion and definitely works hard to give the patient all of the care they need to restore their life to as normal as possible. He is one of the first doctors I have been to that actually listens to what I am saying during the evaluation. His first objective is to improve your condition and not always with surgery.

I received a Prodisc L by Dr.Guyer and his wonderful staff and surgical team early in 2016 and I now have my life back. I experienced so much pain and physical limitation that I had forgotten how good life can be. Thank-you so much for your desire to help me and do all that was necessary to bring about my return to health. My recovery is nothing short of miraculous. Thanks again!!

This Dr Guyer, he does not deserve any stars whatsoever!! If you are in fact one of his patients, I strongly suggest you look very, Very closely to all bills, insurance claims, every detail in their billing!!!! They DOUBLE bill to you and your insurance!! His office people are unprofessional and RUDE!! They will bill you double the amount and change their charges whenever they want. Very dishonest!! He hires individual companies for every little thing that have no clue how to do their job!! Messed up place and they are not truthful!! BEWARE of all of his people working for him!! Darkened him has well, bad representatives for him!! Do not trust him either!! He does not listen and cares none for people. He is blind to all that goes on and his people are doing . I have been a patient of Dr Guyer for 7 years now, and after being over medicated by other spinal doctors, Dr G was able to diagnose what was going on, perform a very serious surgery (Anterior Posterior 360 Disc Fusion on 4 levels) and was a good candidate for an Artificial disc....In my opinion he saved my life. All of this was going on, when this amazingly caring and skilled man was dealing with the death of his son due to a very rare form of Cancer,.... It broke my heart that he saves so many lives every day, but he couldn't save Jeffrey. I was then referred to Dr Langford for Pain Management, and this man also is amazing. What a horrible job, to listen to people that are in chronic pain and all you can do is try to eliminate it. 5 years later, I am going back to Dr L for my follow up and I am so thankful for their entire practices. All their team is amazing and caring and will listen to what you. Thanks to TBI for being the Best Drs I have ever had.... I know I would have been DEAD if they had not figured out the Chronic pain issue, and just kept giving me opiates, I am a text book case and can do anything and more than prior.... Dr Shellock is great! Listens to you and explains very well. That's a good find in an ortho surgeon. I feel she knows her content very well. I definitely would trust her to perform surgery on my back. That being said, I would give 5 stars if it weren't for the office. Everyone was extremely friendly in person. However the problem is they do not get back to you if you call for questions. And getting through to your doctors nurse or voicemail is non existent. I needed a copy of my mri which they legally are required to do, i have called multiple times and no one has gotten back to me in weeks. Someone with chronic back pain does not have time to waste like that. I switched to a smaller orthopedic office who responds to my questions in a timely manner. When you undergo back surgery you will have many follow ups and questions, i needed an office who responds quickly. Such a shame i found a doctor I liked, but am not using because of her office. I've heard amazing things about this practice! Excellent customer service, warm and inviting office, amazing staff. It's always nice to find a practice you can be comfortable with.

Dr. Guyer is a saint as far as I am concerned. He has performed two very successful back surgeries for me and for the first time in years, I was living without pain. I found Dr. Guyer to be extremely sensitive and caring. He does dictate his findings, but I found that most helpful...I could hear what was going in my file.
