Dr. Paula Mendes

I had a horrible experience with Dr. Mendes. She jumped to an incorrect conclusion that my current seizures were unrelated to my epilepsy. She ordered numerous tests and prescribed additional medication, all without waiting for confirmation on her diagnosis from the test results. I had a horrible reaction to the very first pill that I took, something similar to a seizure. Dr. Mendes never reviewed any of my test results with me and referred me to an epileptologist, stating that she doesn't treat epilepsy. Avoid the pain, trauma, and expense. Dr. Mendes is right out of Eichenwald's A Mind Unraveled.

Dr. Mendes had been my neurologist and she had been helpful. Today she was supposed to meet with my daughter for a very important issue, for the first time. We showed up on time, with the paperwork complete on the iPad, but had forgotten to print it out. We said we could fax it to them and they said ok. As we were waiting for the fax to go through the receptionist told us the doctor couldn’t see us b/c it was 13 min past the time of the appointment. We were never given the option to fill out the paperwork again, or email it, or see the doctor and show her the written paperwork on the iPad, or meet with her and fill out the paperwork afterwards. We were also not warned that if the fax was delayed because of their slow wi-if that we’d be told to leave. We complained and said we knew she’d scheduled to see us for 1 hour and that we didn’t need much time at all, and could we fill it out again, or discuss it with the doctor - and she said no. The receptionist was defensive. The office manager was nice and spoke to us but said it was just Dr. Medes “preference” and that the doctor refused any of these fixes and refused to see us. We would have to reschedule. Her next available is in December, and I’m writing this in July. Both my daughter and had rescheduled important things in order to make this appointment. The office manager admitted that we should have been told that we would be unable to see the doctor if the fax didn’t come through quickly enough, and that probably, we should just redo the paperwork. But still, the doctor wouldn’t see us. Let’s hope the thing that is wrong with my daughter doesn’t get worse - it will be on her hands. Additionally - while waiting to seen we heard the receptionist say to a man who was trying to make a follow up appointment, “what do you need to be seen for?” Due to covid he was made to stand 6 feet away - so he had to say in front of the whole waiting room, “Cognitive decline.” “And did Dr. Mendes say you need to bring someone with you?” “Yes.” That’s all a violation of patient confidentiality and humiliating as well. I will not be seeing this doctor again. Sad, because I thought she was a good doctor, but this rigid behavior is alarming and unprofessional. I’m sure it could come up within the treatment relationship as well. Sad - like she was trying to get out of seeing her patients. Why would a doctor do that?

Dr Mendes is knowledgeable professional. However her assistant Rachel is very unprofessional, rude and makes every appointment stressful. She is one of the worst healthcare professionals I have met and I used to work in hospitals. Also each visit is very rushed and there isn't time to listen to questions or concerns. I would go elsewhere

I'm 61 and have had migraines for 51 years and have seen a lot of doctors. I cried for 2 days. Never again will I pay someone to treat me so poorly. Do. Not. See. This. Doctor.

Dr Mendes was thorough, I appreciate that she took the time to investigate my problem. I would recommend Dr Mendes.

Dr Mendes used to be a pretty good Dr but since moving to Boulder has gone way downhill not sure at this point I would give her one star. He assistant Rachel is terrible. Never returns calls and is just plain rude Dr Mendes and especially Rachel don’t listen to anything you say.

Dr Mendes has been my doctor since June 2018 for help with migraines. She is always very helpful and professional and never gave up on trying to find a remedy. When I need help between visits, I can always rely on Rachael, her assistant. She is always very helpful and friendly and always gets me an answer to my questions promptly.

My office visit with Dr Mendes was the best! Professional, friendly and very thorough in her exam and answered any or all questions I had. I highly recommend Dr Mendes. I am feeling hopeful, having been to other medical professionals and not getting a solid viewpoint/possible solution to my issue.

Dr. Mendes is very thorough, knowledgeable and compassionate, listened very carefully and made very appropriate suggestions and explanations for my problem. She spent a lot of time taking my history as well as performing a very thorough neurologic exam. As a retired nurse, I have had a lot of experience with physicians and I highly recommend Dr. Mendes.

Dr Mendes is in my opinion and from her care of my multiple TBIs a neglectful and I suspect lazy doctor. She doesn't listen to her patients in good detail and/or just plain gets facts wrong. She is not very supportive of her patients and in my case prescribed medications that complicated/worsened my symptoms. Even though she has impeccable references, her care does not reflect it. Her bedside manner is standoffish and cold. A 2-5min appointment was standard, yet I'd get charged for a 20-30 minute appointment. Her documentation was somewhat accurate but lacking in details. When asked about my condition by third parties, she got details all wrong. This is not a doctor you want be responsible for your neurological care. Stay Away.

Dr. Mendes insists on being timely. She has a great disposition, asks the right questions and is thorough. We are fortunate to have her in Boulder.

I have been a patient with Dr. Mendez for 10 years. She's very caring; listens to her patients; and is quick to respond to the patient's concerns and needs.

Dr. Mendes is a gem. She epitomizes everything we hoped for in her specialty. Among her many attributes as a physician, we would highlight her knowledge, patience, compassion, and sense of humor. Facing a dire diagnosis and all of the testing involved is overwhelming to the patient and loved ones. Dr. Mendes spent more time with us for our initial appointment than we ever expected. If we have further questions, we are confident that we will receive guidance in a timely manner.

I've been to several neurologists to treat my Parkinson's. Dr. Mendes is definitely one of the best in Colorado. She listens, does a very detailed exam, understands concerns, but most of all is VERY knowledgable. All that and she is a very nice person! I would definitely recommend her to friends/family and look forward to my next appointment.

I have been a patient of Doctor Mendes for ~ 5 years. Through-out that time she has been a tremendous doctor and provided much appreciated help to others in my family. She recently moved to Boulder Medical Center as well as her trusted Nurse Rachel and even though it's a bit more drive would wouldn't consider going to anyone else

I have gone to Dr Mendes for about 10 years for chronic headaches. She is always professional and caring. She has tried numerous medications for treat this challenging condition and still comes up with new treatments. I would recommend her highly to anyone.

I was having issues with dizziness and nausea that literally put me in bed for several days. I had gone to my primary care doctor, obgyn, endocrinologist and I keep being diagnosed with different things but yet no cure. I went to see Dr. Mendes and she knew instantly what was going on. I was dealing with basal migraines. She gave me a prescription and to this day, I have not had any issues since she diagnosed me. I also sent my father to her because he was have issues and every doctor said it was due to age. She diagnosed him right away as a type of seizure. He has not had any seizures since she diagnosed him. I would highly recommend her!!!!!

I found Dr. Mendes to be very caring, helpful and thorough

If I could rate lower, I would. I have never dealt with someone so unprofessional, and thoughtless. Make sure she doesn't lose your "file". I can't even switch my epilepsy medication from Keppra to generic while in search of a new Neurologist after my move. I am having to do a full run-around. Stress is so good for epileptics. She really cares about her patients!

I have had a headache for almost a year now with not much direction on how to get it under control. Dr. Mendes has been very helpful and I believe I am on the right track to get everything back under control. She has listened to all of my concerns, questions, and complaints. I have been a patient of Dr Mendes for just over 5 years now. She diagnosed me with MS in early 2014. I, of course, didn't want to believe her, and looked for another Neurologist who would give me a second opinion. The Dr I chose was retiring, but agreed to see me and review my tests. He agreed 100% with the diagnosis and suggested another Neurologist that I could continue with. One visit with that other Neurologist had me straight back with Dr Mendes. She welcomed me back, and commended my choice to seek a second opinion. From the very first visit on, she was professional, informative, and patient. I never felt like I wasn't being heard, or that any of my questions were foolish. MS is a life-altering diagnosis, and Dr Mendes always gave me the time I needed to feel comfortable. I knew immediately that I had an advocate in my battle. Moving forward, if I have needs between visits, responses are always prompt. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone.

Dr. Mendes is very thorough and caring. She listens and addresses issues in straightforward, understandable way. Thankfully I have not needed to schedule urgent appointment.

Saw Dr. Mendes at Boulder Medical Center. Most thorough neuro exam I've ever had. Spent over 1 hour with Dr. Mendes. Great patient interaction.

Dr Mendes did a most thoughtful, and thorough, examination.. She is knowledgable and caring and unrushed. She asked many questions offered new ideas, and prescribed some new avenues of treatment. I would certainly recommend her to family and friends.

This dr. Visit was a good one for my son, Matt who has MS. Finding the right drug for him is so important. She made recommendations, was very through and helpful. He will continue to get MS treatment help with her.

When I moved to Colorado in 2015 Dr. Mendes was recommended by my PCP, Dr. Nissim. She has been diligent in dealing with my neurological condition. I first came under Dr. Mendes care in 2009 when I was diagnosed with MG (Myasthenia Gravis). When my condition did not respond to traditional treatment and continued to worsen at a local hospital, Dr Mendes elected to transfer me to University Hospital where there were greater resources to deal with my condition and treatment. After nearly three months in the hospital and a long-term care facility I was able to return home. I have since fully recovered from the MG and remain under the long-term care and observation of Dr. Mendes. I credit Dr. Mendes with my successful treatment and recovery from MG. Her medical knowledge and professionalism truly saved my life, and my quality of life. In my experience Dr. Mendes is a knowledgeable, caring and compassionate health care provider who truly takes the well being of her patients to heart.

Dr. Mendes is very through in her assessments and recommendations, but also ALWAYS adds her personal touch and care in every visit that makes her a good doctor.

Dr. Mendes has treated me for migraines for 10 years. I can not express how much she has helped me manage my migraines. I am now addressing balance issues which I have every confidence in Dr. Mendes helping me manage. I have and will continue to refer my family and friends to Dr. Mendes. She is the best!

Dr. Paula Mendes really takes time to listen to what is on your mind regarding symptoms you are experiencing and has really helped me from suffering from cluster migraines. I now have had less occurrences and they are less severe. I am very hopeful now by seeing such wonderful results in such a short time! I definitely recommend Dr. Mendes to anyone who is looking for compassion, relief and results.

Excellent first appointment. Dr Mendes did a thorough initial evaluation and came up with a great plan going forward to address my issues. I could tell she really cared about my issues and I was just not another patient passing through. I was her last appointment of the day when most doctors are tiring from the day and just want to be done, she took extra time to answer all my questions. Highly recommend.

There is no one I would rather see for my neurological problem. She is a great listener and clinician, and answered all my questions. Her treatment is making me feel a lot better now. I am so lucky to have found her. If you are looking for a good neurologist, look no further! I wouldn't hesitate to see her. And she is a Mayo Clinic trained, and is easy to talk to.

Horrible! She thought I had MS at first, but once the tests came back negative, she prescribed me an antidepressant and that was it. She was not interested in helping me, even had the office call to see if I could come in earlier, and then she left before I even checked out. She didn’t care about me, my symptoms or how they affect me. Don’t see her!

After reading reviews I was a bit hesitant to see Dr. Mendes, but her credentials were excellent so I kept the appointment. She was a few minutes late coming in, but nothing out of the ordinary. She was relaxed in her approach, asked questions that told me she had reviewed my profile, and answered all questions in a patient, competent manner. I got the impression she cared, and was willing to follow my lead regarding treatment(s) with which I felt comfortable. Good staff as well!
