Paul Protomastro

Was given a plasma shot by Dr.Protomastro 7 months ago due to a TFCC tear. Since I was told that my insurance doesn’t cover this procedure I had to pay $1000 cash. Firstly, the shot did not work at all ( later on i was told by another hand surgeon that it would have never worked because this specific injury doesn’t respond well to plasma shot) Secondly, my insurance was involved anyway and after seven months I’ve received additional bill. Anyhow I certainly do not recommend this doctor.

I am three months out from a right shoulder replacement. I have had five other surgeries, four of them joint replacements. Dr. Protomastro is a wonderful surgeon. He and his team left nothing unanswered. Every phone call was answered in a timely fashion, all insurance issues were taken care of before the surgery. Every little detail was explained to me by either Dr Protomastro or one of his team. I personally think he has a great personality and bed side manner, and wonder about the reviews that thought less of him. The surgery itself was flawless. Done as an out patient, I was home by 3:30pm. I had the least amount of pain I’ve ever experienced from a surgery. Once I learned the correct exercises, I never went to PT. It’s a much easier recovery then some of the other joints. The incision is so small, and already after three months, you can hardly see it. My post surgery care was just as good as pre-op. And my pain level now, from 1-10 is a one. Can’t wait to do my other shoulder.

Dr Protomastro is everything you'd want in a doctor: he listens, he shows concern, he explains everything in great detail, and follows up, in person. I left a different practice because it was too big and impersonal. After a previous shoulder replacement there, I never saw the surgeon, only a P.A. I give Dr Protomastro my highest recommendation

Two weeks ago I had a total shoulder replacement with Dr. Protomastro. This is my fifth joint replacement which has been done by Coastal Orthopedics and by far the easiest and least painful. The surgery was done as an out patient. I went in at 5:30am and was home by about 3. There was no pain for the first 24 hours due to a block, and even when that wore off, the pain was minimal. The staff is always helpful, caring and friendly, willing to help in any way possible. If there were more then a five star review, they’d get it. I still need two more joint replacements and wouldn’t think of going anywhere else. Every doctor and staff member in this office is of the highest caliber. Last year emergency

From all I've read, I suspect Dr. Protomastro is a gifted surgeon. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt, though, when it comes to his so-called "bedside" manner, as our experience was, shall we say, "less" than pleasant. Considering it was his first encounter with my son, I can see how he must have graduated with honors to be able to merely glance at my son's hand and conclude he's on his cell phone too much, games extensively and doesn't have enough chores. It's not as if I'm an overbearing mother who insisted upon seeing a specialist because my poor son's finger hurts -- we saw his regular physician who subsequently referred us to see him just to be certain there wasn't anything more serious. Quite frankly, he's probably right about the cell phone use, gaming and lack in chores, but I honestly don't see how anyone benefits off of being rude and dismissive on ones first visit. Follow-up: I've always been curious about how companies actually follow-up on their customers'/clients'/patients' dissatisfaction (outside of what's publicly been published). Personally....if it truly meant something to me, I would make an effort to contact that person, even if it meant privately and not given the merit of public viewing. I highly recommend Dr. Protomastro and his team. I needed emergency, extensive rotator cuff surgery this winter. As a Dentist with an injury to my dominant shoulder, I was terrified. Dr. Protomastro delivered a specific diagnosis of the problem in short order and available options and treatment plans going forward. More extensive treatment in the way of surgery was recommended, this proved to be an almost painless replacement of a shoulder joint, which by standards of pain associated with this surgery is extremely good. Others have claimed it to be one of the most painful experiences, that however was not the case with my surgery whatsoever. Appropriate pain medication and quantities necessary to facilitate the patient’s needs such as sleeping and day-to-day activities were provided promptly. Office follow up visit reviewed exactly what had been done and what needed to be done going forward. Pleasant office timely appointments. In short . . . Highly recommended . In my experience, Paul's appointments are very rushed. I have seen him for more than a year regarding discomfort and pain in my arm, and he has never given me enough time to talk through my concerns. He always appeared ready to leave the room at the next available opportunity, and hardly displayed empathy or willingness to listen to my concerns patiently. Even when I requested him explicitly to give me extra time to answer my questions, he blankly said no, because he needed to see the next patient. I would never see such a doctor again who places higher importance to maximizing his appointments than earning patient's trust. I might have ignored his haste if his treatments were helping me, but unfortunately, that didn't happen either.

I just want to say thank you to dr protomastro! Over 10 years ago I broke my hand and wrist in a motorcycle accident. I had so much damage it was almost unrepairable. Not only did dr.protomastro fix my hand/wrist but I have almost full function. I owe him my left hand literally. The fact was my bone was not healing, my arm was swollen and malformed and my shoulder was not functioning. What's worse, I was in pain every day and my life had stalled out. The injury, aftermath of surgery and nonunion were chipping away at my family life, my career etc. I've had ALOT of surgery including 11 hours of life-threatening brain surgery. Surgery is not an option I take casually. I decided I put my full faith in Dr. P. Not only does he have the expertise for complicated ortho surgical procedures and a team of "fox hole" colleagues in that surgical room, he also has an outstanding ability to relate to patients as human beings. He sees YOU. I am 12 weeks out from surgery and still in PT. My bone IS growing back. My range of motion is restored. I have my life back. Thank you Dr. P. You are outstanding!

Son fractured his scaphoid playing football. Thought it was a sprain. When swelling subsided, he finished football and then wrestling seasons. Finally got it diagnosed 6 months later. Dr Protomastro did the surgery and oversaw the 6 month recovery. My son was cleared to play late in the season. The doc was firm in requiring a full 6 months , even though my kid felt ready after 3 months. End result is that the wrist has held up with him playing both sides of the ball, and his team is the Class M football champion. I've seen comments on his brusque manner, but my son and I liked his style and sense of humour.

I had excellent care with Ortho CT and Dr. Protomastro. I needed a rotator cuff repair, which Dr. Protomastro repaired perfectly. I was well prepared for the surgery and long recovery and had quick response from the team when I had questions. The proof of good care is that I now have full use of my shoulder and no pain! You'll be in the best of hands with Dr. Protomastro.

Dr Protomastro is the best. I have had many hand surgeries with him as my surgeon and I wouldn't trust anyone else with my care. He is professional, he takes the time with me when I see him and he explains in my terms what is going on .

I had to have my wrist surgically repaired after 6 weeks of Dr. Protomastro's care. My wrist was fixed by the excellent team of surgeons at Hospital of Special Surgery in NYC. My surgery took 3 hours. The Surgical team had to re-break it, do a bone graft, add a Cadaver bone, and add plates and screws in. Dr. Protomasto's words to me after my cast was removed were, "it's not ideal" I was told by him to do Physical Therapy of 6 weeks and come back and see him. I beyond grateful to the team at HSS!

I had a scheduled appointment with Dr. Protomastro. In advance of the appointment I read a fairly negative patient review about his bedside manner and was a bit apprehensive. In fact the experience was excellent. Dr. Protomastro arranged for x-rays, took plenty of time to explain my problem (rotator cuff tears in both shoulders) and my options for corrective action. He prescribed physical therapy as a first step. Very welcoming manner and I felt very confident working with him.

I was a little bit put off by Dr. P's disposition during my first visit, and I've read some negative reviews, but if I had to do it all over I would 100% see him again. Dr. P performed a Rotator cuff repair, labrum repair and bicep tendonesis on my right shoulder about 6 months ago. The whole process was well communicated and my recovery has gone exactly as he said it would. I'm 100% satisfied with the procedure, the process and the results. I'm not back to full strength yet, but on my way.

No follow up what so ever. Left several messages & no one returned any calls after 3 visits. Finally had to switch to another Dr as I was in quite a bit of pain. Although I'm pretty sure Dr Protomastro knows what he is doing, unfortunately, I left with the impression that his staff was more interested in $$$ than actually helping patients. Very sad. The good news is that I had the repair done by a Dr in Stamford & I am well on the mend.

Fixed my wife’s Brocken wrist and carpal tunnel excellent job and my wife had a fast recovery.

Dr Protomastro's bedside manner (lack thereof), arrogance and lack of patient concern is remarkable. Post ankle surgery, Dr P completely disregarded continued health issues tied to her diabetes, specifically the incision which caused an emergency trip to wound care and 3 weeks of excruciating treatment at another hospital and also missed an RSD diagnosis causing horrible pain and delayed healing. Horrible, horrible experience. WOULD NEVER recommend seeing him.

the best rotator cuff surgeon out there, no pain fast recovery the staff is through and prompt. Costal orthopedics is a great group

Dr. Protomastro was brought in by Norwalk Hospital to do a repair of my shattered right wrist after I fell on ice in 2008. It was a complicated second surgery after the initial emergency surgery done to prevent infection and set my wrist. He did such a beautiful job and withmy subsequent therapy was completely successful in fully restoring 100% of the use of my hand and wrist and arm functions. I am right handed and I cannot say enough my gratitude that I have full use and no impairment or pain.

I thought he was great! Dr. Proto explained very clearly that my broken wrist would benefit from surgery and that I would have my flexibility and life back to nearly normal in 3 months. He couldn't have been more right. I am 6 weeks post surgery and I am without the brace and able to do most everything my life requires. I was disciplined in my hand therapy. BTW they are part of his medical group and are great. Liked his personality, his professionalism and his caring manner. Good Doc!

Very positive experience for ER emergency surgery for ankle fracture. Very professional, efficient and courteous. His office runs smoothly and efficiently, making all follow up appointments easy to deal with. I highly recommend Dr. Protomastro.

In October 2015, I completely tore my rotator cuff while throwing a ball. Dr. Protomastro saw me on a walk-in basis, and confirmed the diagnosis through an x-ray and an MRI. Surgery was on Nov. 10, and sutures removed Nov. 20. Arthroscopic, so barely visible incisions. I can't say enough about how great my shoulder feels at this point; recovery going much better than I anticipated. Doctor was very specific with what activities could be done, and when, and recovery times. Highly recommend
