Reviews for Dr. Paul H. Johnson
Dr Johnson answered my questions and explained the treatment plan.
He explained my condition so it was easy to understand. And provided a treatment option to mitigate my pain.
I didn’t feel rushed, felt comfortable and everything was explained in detail. Highly recommend!
He listened to my concerns and made the appropriate recommendation to meet my need.
I had a great experience. The office staff was friendly and Dr Johnson was able to relieve my pain.
Very kind and logical. A lady there was so happy because she could play with her grandkids again!
I always think a Dr can fix anything, but there are some spine issues that even Drs can’t fix. Dr Johnson is up front and told me what he can help.
He is very experienced and knowledgeable in spine issues.
He was very professional and knowledgeable. I appreciate his direct nature and experienced recommendation. He did a great job explaining the problem and fix options.
Excellent Dr and surgeon. I was nervous and he took the time to answer my questions and explain everything in a way that I understood. I highly recommend him.
Dr Johnson was very kind and compassionate. He followed up to make sure I was doing ok.

Dr. Johnson is the very best. If you have back issues and need to be fixed, he is the person to do it. Before my first back surgery, other doctors told me I’d be in pain and limp the rest of my life. He fixed me. And then when I injured my back again later on, he once again fixed me. Do what he says and you will be healed. I cannot recommend him enough. Dr. Johnson is the very best. Poor doctor. Poor skills. Leaving the room while I’m still asking questions less than 5 minutes from start of seeing me. Won’t return to KOC or to Johnson.
Knoxville orthopedics in general is great from the front desk thru nursing and imaging. Dr. Johnson has been my orthopedics physician since the late 80s. He has always listened to my problem and provides accurate diagnosis and treatment. He has a very caring attitude. He is straight to the point but helpful and knowledgeable. He is really taking good care of me
Very happy with the outcome of my surgery . Dr. Paul Johnson and his staff are very professional and caring . Thank you Dr. Johnson for helping me and giving me back my life !
Do not trust this arrogant person with your back surgery. Do not go to an orthopedic surgeon for spine surgery, go to a neurosurgeon. He is as incompetent as he is arrogant. He caused my husband to be in worse pain than he was before surgery, and he also crippled him, making his whole leg go numb. He is not knowledgeable about the nervous system. After unsuccessful surgery, he told my husband, this is the new normal. I took him to a Vanderbilt neurosurgeon, who wanted to redo the surgery immediately. The Vanderbilt surgeon felt his hips, and said, at this rate, you will be in a wheelchair by the end of the year. Not once in any follow up check ups did Johnson even feel my husband's hip strength. In addition, he waited three months for my husband's foot to start to go numb before he even did the surgery, deeming not so important during times. In addition, he waited three months for my husband's foot to start to go numb before he even did the surgery, deeming not so important during Covid times. A physical was ordered prior to the surgery which showed he had something in his chest. No one revealed to us that this check up showed lung nodules. The doctors dismissed it as pneumonia. Six months later, when we were told it was stage 4 lung cancer, Dr. Johnson was in glee, telling us that maybe his back didn't heel because of the swelling from the cancer. The oncologist told us that the symptoms weren't in the same part of the body. Dr. Johnson repeated this to us 3 times during the 6 month visit, that maybe my husband wasn't healing because of the swelling from the cancer, saying it so happily, like this was getting his malpractice "off the hook". Because my husband was not told about the lung nodules early, and because doctor Johnson crippled my husband, he wasn't mobile enough to get him to MD Anderson in time for proper cancer help. The Vanderbilt surgeon ordered a test, putting dye in my husband's spine to find what the problem was, and said he could both relieve the pain in his back, and get the use of his now numb leg back. Johnson should be sued out of practice, but TN law has recently changed so that lawyers can't get much from law suits, so there aren't many malpractice lawyers left in TN. My husband spent his last year in tremendous back pain, and died of cancer. We both despised Dr. Johnson, and regretted ever meeting him. My husband had met Dr. Johnson some years earlier, and said he couldn't stand him then, but Knoxville lacks competent surgeons. Go to Vanderbilt for care of a serious symptom of any kind.
Everyone was polite and professional. Got in to see Dr. Johnson within my time slot and decisions were made.
Well I would aliken this dr to Steven Strange before his accident. I was not worth his time or expertise. He even asked how I happened to be scheduled with him. It must have been his screeners day off. His Dragnet “Just the facts” attitude was affrontive, but could have been effective, but he cut me off if I tried to say anything. He also does not believe in hope and would do well to read the literature that notes the statistically significant differences in recovery/rehabilitation outcomes of persons with hope and without. He went on to say that he already knew what my test would show but would order it anyway just because. His expectation is that after he has covered me in voluminous amounts of vomitous diarrhea bile that I will come back and listen to him orate on a report he probably did not even look a, not answer my questions a second time about how to manage this disability,!the pain, the decreased use of my limb, and not make any referrals that would make ambulating in my home safe and effective. His smug “don’t let the door hit you in the a…. Actually I don’t care if it does” attitude as I leave will not be graced upon me again. I am very disappointed and upset with the lack of care, compassion and attention that Dr. Paul Johnson gave. I would not recommend him at all. I do not understand how a doctor who takes an oath to care and do no harm can be so inconsiderate of people in their time of need. I did not receive excellent care that I expected. I saw Dr. Johnson on 12-2-21 and he wasn't even in the room with me for 5 minutes, he dismissed my concerns, he did not give me a chance to finish speaking. I did not drive all the way to Knoxville or choose Dr. Johnson to be treated this way. On my first visit with Dr. Johnson he wrote and gave me paperwork on another patient, at the check out desk I ask the lady to go make sure Dr. Johnson looked at my MRI and not this other lady's. I appreciate Dr. Johnson's confident, no BS bedside manner. There is a reason why he's booked out so far in advance. My appointment was quick but thorough. I also appreciate Dr. Johnson's no nonsense philosophy. Although he offered me several different treatment options, he didn't waste my time with options he knew wouldn't work or costly procedures. Dr.Johnson answered my questions clearly and without a lot of medical jargon. As a patient, I tend to trust doctors who are straight forward, and Dr. Johnson absolutley embodies that trait. Dr. Johnson believes I am a good candidate for surgery and that having the operation could improve my quality of life. However, he also encouraged me to have realistic expectations for my recovery and possible outcomes. After being turned away from other surgeons for years, I had very low expectations for my appointment. But, Dr. Johnson, confident in his abilities, has given me hope. And like I told him during my appointment, having hope again is so precious, and I can't put into words how much it means to me. I am actually looking forward to this surgery, and if everything goes as planned, getting back to a healthy and productive life. I appreciate Dr. Johnson's confident, no BS bedside manner. Dr Johnson was totally awesome. My surgery was a huge success. He and his staff answered all my questions and spent plenty of time with me. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Johnson is a doctor that is very straight and does what he says I am 13 days post surgery and I believe once I heal completely I will be pain free. The staff in the past 6 months that I have been going. Has been nothing but friendly knowledgeable and helpful. From Dr Johnsons nurse's down to the ladies up front at intake and discharge. Park west medical where I had my surgery was awesome in the care and comfort they provide before and after surgery. I personally want to keep koc and parkwest as the only doctors that I see from here on out. Nothing but excellent from both. I came into the office nervous and anxious about my results of my MRI and I was met with One of the rudest doctors I’ve ever met my entire life, he made me feel stupid and ignorant for asking simple questions about by diagnosis. And then called me high maintenance for asking and kept repeating OMG I’ve already told you that one time are you not listening as he was spewing off medical terms I didn’t understand. I will never return back to the doctor Johnson again. Obviously he hates his job and does not like working with society and should be removed from working with patients directly. I appreciate being worked in on short notice. Stacy is always friendly and fun. Dr. Johnson is excellent; he listens to my concerns and explains things in a way I understand.
Stacy helped with changing my appt so I could be with my wife during her shoulder surgery that same day. Everyone involved there works hard to accommodate my needs.
Dr Johnson renews our faith in doctors. Dr Johnson listens, cares, and gives you a feeling that he not only knows what he is doing, but take every avenue to do what is best for his patients. Thank God for the Dr Johnson’s in this world.

6 days before surgery my insurance declined because of a office error in the paper work and the worst part is not one person will return my messages now I get a letter stating my case has been appealed....forget it I found another doctor!!
Absolute worst representation of a medical professional that ironically boasted of his 25yrs experience in arrogance. My visit was per my request to see a specialist to diagnose my lower back issues. I received zero explanation, no acknowledgement, evidence or explanation of my X-rays, no examination. I was told he had no interest in my history just asked if my injury was job related, I was questioned about my x marked on my chart(left front leg) after I explained my numbness I was told he didn’t care about that, my numbness wasn’t coming from my back but from my hip. No further explanation about my hip. He quickly prescribed PT with absolute zero explanation of any diagnosis. When I asked questions, I was told I could either take his recommendation or go see another doctor elsewhere. I told him I wasn’t opposed to PT but I wanted to understand my diagnosis. (I still had not received) My questions were continually answered in arrogance. Example, “you see my grey hair, I can’t do anything about it,” “what do you want to hear from me...you have a hard job, you stand all day long.” Dr Johnson appeared anxious and in a hurry. He was defensive, hostile, and rude. He showed zero signs of interest in patient relations, exhibiting a medical diagnosis or explanation. He boasted of his experience w/arrogance however represented no medical knowledge or professionalism to back his statement. I left knowing nothing more than when I arrived. Absolutely...Nothing. I am disappointed that an establishment such as KOC would allow or condone this type of behavior or treatment. I will be contacting KOC to request my X-rays and a further explanation of treatment. Discussed upcoming surgery on hips and Lower back
Had surgery, following drs directIons, everything progressing as it should.
Dr. Johnson is professional and explains things in a way that makes it easy to not only understand the injury but the effect on your quality of life.
Very good first impression, already had looked at my file before he came in, explained the plan, gave me options and listened to my questions.
Follow-up after my 1st epidural for lower back issues. I asked a series of questions concerning surgery vs. epidurals. All were clearly and concisely answered. In sum, he "knows his stuff" which elicits confidence in his patients. Whether I have surgery will be determined in the coming months. If I elect to to have surgery -- he's my 1st choice to do it.
