About Dr. Patrick W Slater
Reviews for Dr. Patrick W Slater
Dr Slater is extremely knowledgeable on Meniere’s Disease. He listened to all of my symptoms and gave me my treatment options. I would recommend him to anyone that wants to listen and do the work it takes to control Meniere’s Disease.
It doesn't surprise me that they would take my review off being they didn't like that I was not coming back they have no compassion for the patient I feel this is a get rich clinic they make appointments but make you wait or see someone else. 1st appointment was at 1p was the last to get in then made an unnecessary appointment which I drove 2 hrs out of my way then they did a sinusplasty which I never seen dr slater before or after after 2 was I went back with a follow up and being in pain he scoped my nose sent me home and the rest of the week was painful. I called the following Monday for antibiotics but they were to busy to call in a prescription so I went to urgent care for treatment they later called to apologize but I told them I would not be back. After 1.75 hours waiting for this doctor, he barely acknowledged me and proceeded to ask the assistant what was wrong with me. Now I understand possibly a teaching situation....though the assistant was polite, they then provided very inaccurate info. I interjected that the info was not correct and felt pressured to explain what was going on as fast as possible. Only to then receive a response that left me feeling unheard, disrespected and humiliated. Total time with doctor? Maximum 8 minutes. I left with an unaddressed medical situation. Additionally, front desk staff projects a very uncaring and abrupt attitude. Finally, if you are looking for an office that acknowledges Covid (especially if you are immune compromised) I would recommend calling before booking to obtain current info on their policies. I will add that I have never left this type of a review for a doctor and their support staff. I waited for a month to see Dr. Slater for vertigo. When I arrived for my appointment at 8:00 AM, Liz, the receptionist, informed me Dr. Slater hadn’t arrived yet. After a few minutes in the waiting room, I was taken by the tech to be given several hearing tests afterwards, he escorts me to a room to wait for the doctor. After waiting 40 minutes, I finally came out of the room and asked where was the doctor and was he even there yet. Liz comes in and tells me he’s stuck in surgery. You couldn’t go in and tell me instead of keeping me waiting. She said I could reschedule. I said no, I waited a month for this appointment. Liz said I could come back that afternoon. She called me to come back at 2:15 PM. I asked if Dr. Slater was going to be there for sure (yes). Went back, was escorted to the room again. Waited 20 minutes later, the physician's assistant (Chris) walks in and informs me Dr. Slater is not there and is still in surgery. Why wasn’t I told that when I asked if he was going to be there? I grudgingly agree to let Chris do several exercises to help with vertigo. He prescribed medication for motion sickness. The next day I was worse than when I went in, and the medicine was making my head even worse. I called for Chris to call me back. I never received a callback, and I quit taking the medication. I understand when you’re stuck in surgery, but the way they handled the situation is applauding. Waste of my time, I’m very disappointed in Dr. Slater and his office staff. Saying that this entire office is highly unprofessional is an understatement. I will not return. I waited for a month to see Dr. Slater for vertigo. Surgery, 12.1.21, cancelled morning of and rescheduled for 30 days later, 12.30.21 only to have it canceled 12.28.21, by voice message. Still no call from the office. They have no regard for their patients. Just saying, I wouldn’t see this doctor if he was the only one left in TX..
Today was my third appointment in a row that was confirmed, reconfirmed, and then cancelled after arriving at his office. Each time arriving and beint told that “Dr Slater is not coming in today.” Even worse is that I had to drive one hour to his office three times in a row for nothing. How patients can be treated with such disregard is disgraceful. Find another doctor that keeps appointments. Dr Slater is highly intelligent and knowledgeable, yet has an easy-going, comfortable and quirky bedside manner. He can make anyone feel at ease. His staff is responsive to any and all questions and they care about their patients. I'd highly recommend Austin Ear Clinic!
This doctor does not wear a mask and neither does anyone in his office. I cancelled my last appointment because I just could not bring myself to enter this environment especially with COVID-19 now in Stage 5 again. There is a sign at the check-in that says the Gov. Abbott does not require masks in medical offices as of April, 2021. He may take his guidance from politicians but I cannot.
This is a hard review to write because everyone I encountered at the office was wonderful, but I feel like a diagnosis into what was really happening with me was not as thorough as it should have been. I was seen by Dr. Slater and his PA Andrew for ringing in my ears, dizziness, and headaches with no signs of hearing loss. I had a CT scan performed and it was noted in this scan I had a sinus infection (I only found this out after getting a second opinion, the office DID NOT tell me at the time I had an infection, but the doc who gave me the second opinion saw this in the notes.) Despite that note, it was NOT treated at the time and I remained miserable for months with the diagnosis of "endolymphatic hydrops" or Meineres, which is very rare. Now, the office was awesome as far as scheduling and care for what they thought I had, but this is my issue with the diagnosis. Usually with Meinere's which is very rare, you have hearing loss. I did not have any hearing loss. When I asked about this, I was told, "well I don't have it yet." That was beyond terrifying and discouraging. I noticed the young lady who did my intake remarked, "must be Meinere's" when I got through telling her my symptoms initially. I didn't appreciate her opinion since she's not a doctor and at the time it didn't register to me, but that should have been a red flag. It seems like this is an easy diagnosis made in this office. As it turns out, Dr. Slaughter, the doctor I went to for a second opinion very quickly ascertained I had a deep sinus infection in my nose and the drainage was getting into my eustachian tubes and terrorizing my ears. I did tell Andrew I had post nasal drip and that something was going on with my throat (the meds for this complaint were never sent to my pharmacy,) yet despite all of these clues I was giving, the office just rushed into the most dramatic possibilities even though we had the CT scan showing the infection. I'm confused and frustrated. I literally suffered for a year and now I'm on antibiotics and the dizziness and ringing in my ears is virtually gone and I have a follow up to see if I need sinoplasty surgery. This was allowed to get worse over time because this office overlooked my CT scan. Consider a second opinion if you've been diagnosed with Meinere's here. I was originally happy when I found Slater, because for the first time I had a doctor diagnose my CSF leak. But prior to surgery, he only did one CT scan which was inconclusive and did not show any definitive issue area. Nevertheless he recommended surgery based on what he thought was causing my issues. I was a little apprehensive and called the office twice before surgery to make sure I didn't need any other type of imaging done, and they assured me that they knew where the problem was and surgery would only help me. Felt okay after surgery, and Dr Slater even came in the day after surgery acting happy and showed me a video of my brain he took on his phone during surgery (not sure how I feel about that). After surgery I started developing worse symptoms, which he kept assuring me would get better over time. I kept getting worse, and the original issue was still there. He sent me for a lumbar puncture with blood patch, and I wasn't sure why since my leak was cranial, and even the radiologist thought I should have been having a cisternogram. I had a few appointments after that, to which he said the new issues I had (I had SCDS) would resolve in time (the only fix for SCDS is surgery!), and said things like "I can't figure you out." I continued to get worse, and At my last appointment he decided to cauterize my adenoids, which did nothing for me except put me in unnecessary discomfort. I have since found new doctors who just performed a craniotomy for my SCDS and confirmed that there was a huge defect from the surgery Slater did that was causing my issues. In case you don't want to read every horrible detail about this doctor, I'll warn you now... do not book an appointment here! The reason for my visit is bcz my hearing loss is worsening so I booked an appt with Dr. Slater. I arrive at 2:20 for a 3:00 appt bcz I have paperwork to complete. One odd thing here was that one of the forms asked for my credit card to keep on file. Maybe that's some new trend but I sure the hell wasn't going to give them that. 2:45 I was pleasantly surprised when at 2:45 I was brought back by the tech to conduct my hearing test. This is where the pleasant experience ends and the weird experience begins. The tech's first question to me was "do I have any children?". Although that was a bit odd for a hearing test, but no big deal. 3:05 The tech finishes the hearing test and escorts me to a waiting area to wait to see the doctor. I'm there long enough for another person to come through that same process and be seated next to me. After 35 min pass, I ask that other patient if this wait time is normal. She says that it is. 5 min later, a med asst finally takes me to a room. 3:45 I spent the next 10 min telling the med asst everything that had already been written down on the forms I completed. Annoying but no big deal. 3:55 As he leaves the room, I ask how much longer before the doctor comes in. He says that Dr Slater is going pretty quickly today so not much longer. 20 minutes later the doctor arrives along with the medical assistant. 4:15 Finally, I see the doctor for my 3:00 appt. An hour and 15 min late seems too much to me. I know what you're thinking here: all doctors' offices run late. Well, I'm here to tell you that not ALL of them are like that. You just have to look harder for those rare ones that are well-oiled machines. There are actually a few Costco's out there! Here's where the most unprofessional dr experience of my life starts. He asks what I do for a living. I tell him that I'm an executive asst. He then proceeds to bash his own executive asst, which I have no choice than to be offended by asst He then asks for the reason for my visit. I start telling him and quickly realize that he is looking at his med asst and wants him to answer this question. Well, of course. Who better to say what is going on with me than some stranger who doesn't know a thing about me...oh of course, the med asst. Shockingly, he got it wrong twice so I had to interrupt their discussion about me to clarify things as he went along. Okay, now proceed Mr med asst. It was so awkward and strange. Then they started this medical terminology banter. I felt like I was being talked about but in another language. As the visit proceeded, we cont'd to discuss details about what is happening with my hearing. As I was talking, a second med asst barges in to tell the dr about some other patient. He didn't knock, or say exuse me, just started talking to Dr. Slater. What's worse is that Dr. Slater was receptive to this and had a full convo about some other patient right in the middle of my visit! I couldn't believe what was happening. Dr. Slater suggested a CAT scan to know my exact problem. I'm giving him credit here for admitting that he was unsure about my issue. He also suggested steroid shots and hearing aids. He says that he sells them but you can also get them from places like Costco. Says Costco is cheaper but his customer svc is better. His arrogance is blinding the reality that his cust svc doesn't deserve Yelp's one-star minimum. He shook my hand and said to come back if anything urgent happens, or I'll see you in a year. 4:20 At check out, someone finally opens the glass door after 2 min. As they joke about taking money from me to pay off some dude's house, I'm charged $160 before another person says no, she has a $35 copay. I finally walked out at 4:26. Saying that this entire office is highly unprofessional is a gross understatement. I only blame Dr. Slater, though. It's his practice, his process, his culture. I will not return. In case you don't want to read every horrible detail about this doctor, I'll warn you now... do not book an appointment here! … More
Dr Slater's office is very Nice And Dr Slater is very Honest. And Doesn't Sugar Coat anything.
Dr Slater and his team are the best! Other Drs. Other Drs said if it's an inner ear problem there is nothing that can be done. Dr Slater and his team are curing his problem.
Dr. Slater is top notch! Professional, caring and very personable. His staff is great! I would highly recommend this practice to anyone in need of an excellent ENT!
I love Dr Slater and his team! They helped diagnose me after 8 yrs of other drs telling me they didn’t know what was wrong with me and couldn’t help me. Dr Slater knew exactly what was going on, and confirmed it in two visits. Thank you!!
I LOVE DR SLATER & HIS STAFF! Wonderful & knowledgeable dr who made an affirmative diagnosis when no other drs could figure things out. Dr Slater is about caring for the patient, not about $$ or payment. The staff is SUPER friendly, understanding, & accommodating. Dr. Slater treats my husband’s Ménière’s disease and he is conservative in his treatment. His PA, Andrew Clark is equally knowledgeable and patient in his bedside manner. The entire staff will treat you with compassion and dignity every single time you engage with them; never have we met an off day with them. The problem with medicine especially when the patient is suffering with a debilitating disease like Ménière’s, the answers sometimes are not fast enough. Understand that medicine is a practice and not an exact science and you will be better off. If you need a physician specialized in the Ear, Nose and Throat to stay the course of your symptoms and bring you to a point of wellness, Dr. Slater is definitely the man to do exactly that! There are some surgeons out there that rarely give their patients the sincere and genuine time for questions and answers and peace of mind with regards to their diagnosis and proposed procedures. Dr. Slater has the steady hand for surgery and the knowledge to back it up. Allow me to emphasize to you, Dr. Slater has no shame when perplexed in findings to sit there in front of you with his head in hand and take a moment to do of the moment research to obtain the next best plan of attack! Every single person that works for him maintains that same school of knowledge in treating their patients with dignity and respect. There is nothing his office will not do (within reason) to bring you peace of mind and comfort to ease your pain during debilitating circumstances. I simply can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Slater and his practice. He is still treating my husband and still searching for answers, but as I stated earlier he is very conservative in his treatment and exhausts all measures. In my husband’s case we have arrived at the third surgical procedure to address his Ménière’s disease, Vestibular Nerve Section to kill his Vertigo and restore his quality of life. My husband and I remain hopeful and confident in Dr. Slater’s ability and expertise. He is awesome and we have a healthy respect and fondness for him, both as a kind human and a professional in his field! God bless you Dr. Slater and Andrew Clark, as well as the entire practice so they can continue to serve the community of Austin; we are blessed to have them all here in Austin. Thank y’all for everything you have done and continue to do for my husband and our family. You guys are extremely special to us! Meet my expectations!
Dr. Slater's practice is highly unprofessional. He bashed his executive assistant (after I tell him I'm an exec asst), asks his med asst what's going on with me but doesn't ask me. He instead has a medical terminology discussion without me as if I'm not in the room about what is going on with my hearing. Then another med assistant barges in during my visit to talk to Dr. Slater about another patient! He couldn't clearly articulate what could be causing my hearing loss, not because he didn't know, but because he doesn't communicate very well. I arrived at 2:20 for a 3:00 appt. I left there at 4:26 and only saw the doctor for 10 min. I would highly recommend that you find a different ear doctor.
At my follow up appointment I was left waiting in the exam room for 45 minutes with no one coming in I finally left and no one even seamed to care at all. I found this very unprofessional expecialy when I left a message on their website and no one even responded to that.
I am not one bit better, over year later
I do not know how Dr. Slater is with his procedures but I am rating it 1 star because I paid $300 just for shaking his hands on my first visit. I had all my reports from a different doctor presented to him, so there was no new checks done at this institution.
He is personable and makes his patients feel comfortable. I knew he cared and wanted to make me better.
I've been going here for 10+ years and I am so thankful for them! From ear infections, hearing issues, to vertigo, tinnitus and menieres disease, they've handled it all with the utmost professionalism. Simply put, if you want the best, go see Dr. Slater and his team!
Awful! This clinic bills themselves as the "experts in ears." I would expect to be educated and have someone actually explain things to me. I went to see Dr. Slater for vertigo. He abruptly came in and seemed rather put off that he had to deal with me and that he just couldn't wait for me to stop talking. I then had my hearing tested by a hearing aid dealer, not even the audiologist. I later found out that the two are NOT the same. I was told I had Meniere's disease and that there was nothing that could be done until my ear died and I would then have to have my nerve cut. After a second opinion from a center that ACTUALLY specializes in dizziness and hearing loss (I say a surgeon, an audiologist and then surprisingly a physical therapist) a treatment plan was devised to help me manage my symptoms. I wouldn't wish this practice on my worst enemy. Awful! This clinic bills themselves as the "experts in ears." I would expect to be educated and have someone actually explain things to me.
