Just don't
In March 2022 I underwent surgery to two levels of my lumbar spine. I had been having serious back pain for years which had progressed to the point that I could not sit, stand, or lie down with any degree of comfort. Having been a nurse for 30 years and having expertise in neurotrauma, I had reservations about surgery. I had tried physical therapy but couldn’t tolerate it. I began to have weakness in my right leg which was alarming and prompted me to seek a surgical opinion. I was sent by my neurosurgeon to Dr. Blam, who is an orthopedic spine specialist, for a second surgical opinion. I am so happy he did. Dr. Blam’s expertise is well known in the local medical community. He does not recommend surgery if a different, less invasive therapy will offer relief. I went step by step through the process of trying different therapies until it became clear that surgery was my only remaining option. This did not take very long! Both surgeons agreed that surgery was my next step. Due to the complexity and length of time the procedure required, both my neurosurgeon, Dr. Haroun, and Dr. Blam performed my surgery. In simple terms, Dr. Haroun performed the dissection to reveal the affected nerves in the surgical site. Dr. Blam performed the fusion and installed instrumentation to support my spine. Upon awakening from anesthesia, I knew the problem had been solved! The only pain I had was surgical site pain from the incision and muscular pain from the tissue disruption of the surgery. There was NO nerve pain. My recovery, I was 64 at the time, went like lightening. I needed opioid pain medication for maybe seven days. After that, Tylenol and muscle relaxers did the trick. Physical therapy was started after a few months. It was very helpful in restoring strength and flexibility that had been lost from years of declining activity. I waited a year to write this review because I wanted to be able to provide a picture not only of the immediate events but how the follow up experience and complete recovery was. Office and support staff –Honestly, I cannot say enough about Liz, Dr. Blam’s admin. She was always one step ahead of me when I had questions, usually already having done whatever I was about to ask her to do. Liz is special! Dr. Blam – Dr. Blam is a great listener. His physical assessment is very thorough. His ability to interpret imaging and make it understandable and even recognizable was excellent. I am a person who wants to see and understand everything down to the most minute detail. I always felt I had his full attention during my appointments. He met with me and my husband on multiple occasions to clarify questions we had. He was extremely patient with the two of us who were nervous about the surgery. In the hospital after the surgery, Dr. Blam checked in on me multiple times to check my progress. This was in addition to being checked in on by the rest of his team! After discharge, Dr. Blam continued to be very attentive and involved in my post op care. Follow up appointments were a very well-orchestrated process. Lumbar x-ray at the office followed by meeting with Dr. Blam. Although the practice Dr. Blam belongs to is huge, I felt like an individual and received excellent care and service. If you have back pain, please consider Dr. Blam. I am so thankful I did. He is responsible for restoring my physical health, activity (yoga, crawling around with three young grandsons, and horses – although I no longer ride), and mental health. Pain does awful things to a person. I am pain free and have Dr. Blam to thank for it!
I'm not sure why there are negative reviews about Dr. Blam being arrogant or rushing through appointments. I did not find him arrogant in the slightest. He was kind, thoughtful, thorough and not rushed at all. I highly recommend him.
Dr Blam is the best orthopedic doctor you could ask or. My husband has had 4 surgeries by him and he is through and careful. I also have a surgery coming up April 21, 2022. I wouldn't trust another spinal surgeon. We love Dr. Blam and are more greatful than we can say. We were blessed by God bringing him our way. Thank you, Dr Blam, you're the best.
Completely agree with others. Very arrogant and condensending. Spoke over me, annoyed if I asked same question more then once and said PT was the solution all the while I was crying in pain. Plan on finding a new provider asap.
Dr. Blam was absolutely amazing. I moved recently and not having him as my doctor bums me out:/ He took my concerns seriously and did a great job with my surgery. I recommend him highly!
Iv never met a doctor who is so useless. Literally I lost count the amount of times he said “I don’t know”. Try and find another doctor who is more friendlier, helpful, and actually wants to find the source of the problem. Don’t waste your time here he obviously doesn’t know much! Unfortunately, it sounds like quite a few people had the same experience I did. Admin staff was fantastic but “Dr.” Blam is as arrogant and condescending as others have expressed. Dismissive of my concerns, cut me off while speaking several times. Shame he has such a pleasant environment to mistreat patients in. Waste of $50.

I have been seeing Dr. Blam going on 5 years now. He has performed 3 surgeries on me. I am fused from S1 to L4. Dr. Blam has always been straight forward and honest with me at all our consults. I suffer from a degenerative bone disorder which has made the disc fusions unsuccessful.Dr. Blam has always taken the time to review my history and any new mri’s , CT’s, or anything else that may have come up since our last visit. If there is a another alternative besides surgery he has always given it. He has just never just opted straight to surgery with me. Two major surgeries. Double cervical fusion in the neck and double lumbar fusion in the lower back. Pain free for the first time in 35 years. He is the best. You don't go to him for bedside manner and to be your friend, you go to him to get healed. If he's not answering your questions or seems a little rushed, just ask your question again. He will answer you thoroughly and completely. I've never had a problem communicating with him. I rate him 5 stars because it won't let me give him 6. Two major surgeries. I was surprised in the reviews regarding Dr. Blam, I feel he is the reason I'm here today! My previous surgeon wanted 2 weeks of complete bed rest after remocving stitches on 2/5/2021, but we saw Dr. Blam 5 days later (2/10/2021) and from explantaion of symptons he felt it was a deep wound infection. Admitted to hospital on that Wednesday I met Dr. Blam, MRI in the hospital on Thursdeay, operated on Friday to clean out infection, and when Dr. Blam visited me Saturday to check-in, he informed me that i would have been septic in another four days. Dr. Blam the first time in seeing me, diagnosed a potential deep wound infection and my surgeon of five previous surgieries over 14 years and preformed removal of a hematoma blood clot from my surgery of 1/14/2021 from my surgery on 1/7/2021 did not! From a first meeting with Dr. Blam I felt very comfortable, this is an issue I have had for almost 10 years. I've previously had surgery which was a short reprieve, he looked at my recent MRI's discussed reasons why my former surgeon rushed into a spine fusion (I was not comfortable with this) but he gave more options, discussed what I had done in the past as well as recently. He discussed operations he had performed as well as brought up book references and statistics which I very much appreciated. He could be a bit hasty in talking but he is direct and if you ask something exact you will receive an exact answer. I knew he had discussed my issue with my pain specialist as he mentioned several things I had only mentioned there and I knew he had also looked into my previous records. This made me feel comfortable that he did his research and was not just lumping me with the "normal." Over the last 8 years I've seen no less than 3 pain specialists, 3 chiropractors, 2 physical therapists and he makes the second surgeon in addition to multiple ER visits and my PCP. I've never felt so listened to (being a 29 year old female lower back pain was constantly put off as "female pains," "over exaggeration," or "nothing to worry about.") While I have not had surgery yet, I have a good feeling and feel comfortable using him for my upcoming surgery. *updated review 11 months post surgery* Since having the surgery I have faced many obstacles. While the surgery was done quickly and professionally the only qualm we had was that no one from the surgical team met with the person who was caring for me directly after the surgery. This could have been due to a number of reasons I am sure. I will say though that Howard County General Hospital failed in the after care and that resulted in multiple issues being reported. In the weeks and months following my surgery nearly EVERY prediction Dr. Blam came true. With this being my 2nd round in surgery for the same issue he was sure to let me know that there would be a much longer healing time and other obstacles which I will not mention but with his predictions in mind it helped me to heal properly. As with the first few times I spoke with him, meetings were brief and to the point. At 11 months post op, I have resumed most of my normal life and even though I will forever have some issues due to it being a re-do of another procedure I will be forever grateful for the amazing work by Dr. Blam and his team. He will be the FIRST I go to in the future for any possible issues and I highly recommend him to anyone who may need surgery on their spine. Just come with questions in hand. I would never ever recommend this doctor to anyone. He operated on me and I had a major complications that may have been caused by him and/or his surgical team at a local ambulatory center. He refused to give me certain meds that caused a second complication and months later I am still in terrible pain. He refused to manage my medications once I was discharged from the hospital. Medications he prescribed. I cannot begin to describe the level pain and suffering I experienced under his care and the way I was treated is unconscionable. He should be ashamed of himself.
Dr Blam arrived for my surgery at 7:05am when I was scheduled for 7:30am. When he spoke with me before my procedure he hadn’t read my chart (I’ve a complicated medical history) by his own admission and he didn’t even know who I was even though I had seen him numerous times. Needless to say I had a major complication and 4 months later, I’m still in horrific pain and switched to a better surgeon to help me. Dr. Blam is arrogant, doesn’t listen well, and is dismissive of a patient’s suffering. He really doesn’t seem to care at all. I am worse off having had him as my surgeon.
Dr. Blame was caring and professional. He took time to listen to me and to explained things so I understood. I would definitely see him again whenever needed.
Dr Blam performed spinal fusion of my lower back (L4-L5) on 10/05/2020. I suffered from extreme back and leg pain along with great difficulty walking. Prior to surgery he explained in detail the surgery he was to perform. He was very considerate and polite when talking to me. He scheduled surgery in a timely manner. The surgery gave immediate relief. I am now one year out and remain pain free.
Literally the worst. Spoke to me like I was an idiot. Said “you don’t need surgery so why are you here”. The walls are very “thin” and I could hear him speaking to another patient the way he spoke to me. Also rude to his staff. He refused to answer my questions and actually said “how should I know”. Absolutely confirmed the adage “surgeons just want to cut”. Since I apparently didn’t need surgery—I was a waste of his time. It’s a shame because I’ve seen other doctors with this practice who were thorough, pleasant and helpful. But not Blam.
DR. BLAM HAS PREFORMED A SPINAL FUSION AND A LAMINECTOMY ON ME. I NOTICED HE TROUBLE SHOOTS AND EXECUTES WELL. THE ELLICOTT CITY'S ADMIN. AND NURSING STAFF WERE INFORMATIVE, KIND AND CARING. THEY MAKE YOU FEEL AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE. EVEN WARM BLANKETS WHEN YOUR TOES GET COLD. THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST STAFF ARE INCREDABLE. DR. CUTLER WAS AWESOME. I FELT SO COMFORTALBE DURING AND AFTER SURGERY, BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. I ALSO NOTICED THAT CARING FOR PEOPLE WAS THEIR PRIORITY, THEIR JOB KNOWLEDGE JUST MADE THINGS FLOW WELL. THIS PLACE WAS A BLESSING TO ME AND I HAVE NO MORE ASSOCIATED BACK/LEG NERVE PAIN. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Dr. Blam was informative, detailed, answered all my questions comprehensively - without being pushy towards surgery, or the timing thereof.
Dr. Blam and his entire staff are wonderful. Dr. Blam takes the time to explain treatment options and possible outcomes. He performed a carpal tunnel release procedure and the results were excellent. His staff is kind and caring. I always get a quick response to any questions or appointment changes. I would highly recommend this practice.
Dr Blam has performed 2 surgeries on me, and I am more than pleased, I am pain free ! I had hideous all consuming nerve pain, and he identified and corrected my problems. I highly recommend this man, he knows his stuff !
Dr. Blam's office was able to work me in quickly for an acute onset of pain. He zeroed in on likely issue, gave me options for further testing and treatment, and we ultimately agreed to try physical therapy first. He did not try to push costly imaging, testing, or invasive procedures. The pt worked wonders. I was very please with my entire experience with both him and the affiliated physical therapy group.
Had a partial 3 level laminectomy on July 9,2020. Dr. Blam took his time explaining all aspects of the procedure, was very patient with me and answered all my questions, no matter how trivial. He told me what to expect after, including some pain. 20 days later my lower legs feel fantastic and the only pain I feel now is around the the incision and had an appointment with him today and he did some tests and things are progressing very well. Looking forward to playing golf with my sons. Dr. Blam says all residual pain should go away in 3-4 weeks and told me if I had ANY problems to call him. Couldn't ask for a better life changing experience, Peter Crocamo

Dr. Blam , he DO NOT deserve to be call a Doctor. He don’t have any manners at all . He walk in to the room and ask why I want ? And what was the problem ? He stated he don’t see any issues at all on my CT and he is a surgeon and I don’t need surgery. I had a terrible fall from the stairs and I had been suffering from lower back pain now for a month . I drove 45 minutes to see him and he only give me 5 minutes because I don’t need surgery . What kind of person he is..! Had follow up with Dr Blam at Hag Md office for cervical discectomy and fusion C4-6. Dr. Blam may be a fine surgeon , but seems to have issues being condescending and arrogant. Have also experienced same issues with his assistant Lauren. I will not be following up with any further appointments.

Dr. Blam made a difference in my life. He was quick to diagnose my back issues after years for suffering. He preformed a laminectomy and spinal fusion in 5 weeks. Dr. Blam was kind, professional, and confident that he could help me. I was impressed with Dr. Blam’s thoroughness, he discussed the entire procedure with me during our first meeting, his staff was helpful as well. I Thank God for giving this man his talents.
I had no issues with Dr. Blam. The surgery went well and he took time to explain all procedures and what to expect afterwards. He answered all questions that I had.
I met with Dr. Blam twice before I decided to go ahead with the surgery on my lower spine. He thoroughly explained the procedure and follow up. On the day of the surgery, Dr. Blam went over the procedure again. The surgical staff was attentive and no time was wasted. Now, 2 1/2 weeks post surgery the pain is gone and I am walking straighter than in the past 4 years. I only wish I had done it sooner.
I have to say something about Dr. Blam. He did spine surgery on me Jan. 22, 2018 and I had nothing but EXCELLENT care. This includes before and after surgery. I don't know how anyone can give him a bad review. He cares about all his patients and does not have time to sit and talk to you about the weather. He will take all the time you need when talking about your actual pain etc. He is a Top Surgeon and takes great care of you. And I will leave my name. I am not ashamed of any review I give even if it is not a favorable review. This deserves more than 5 stars. Excellent Sugeon

I had a great experience with Dr. Blam. He was thorough in his exam and answered any questions I had. The day of surgery he was attentive and helpful in addressing any concerns, as well as again going into detail as to what was planned. The surgery went very well and I found him to be delightful to work with.

40 minutes late on appointment, which is fine but seems very rush, in and out in about 5 minutes.
Avoid him at all cost. Went complaining of lower back pain. I had MRIs, bone scans, blood results....etc. he did not look at any of them. Did not examine me, or offer reasons for my pain. Spent less than 5 mins with me, was arrogant condescending and dismissive. NEVER seen any doctor with such attitude before.
I agree that this doctor has a big attitude problem. After waiting in the doctor office for over 1 and a haft he than spent less than five minutes and told us we need a mri and the x rays didn’t show anything. My wife try to show him where the pain was but he didn’t brother to look. He said he’s an orthopedic dr. and not a pain management dr. He was very rude and ask why are you here. Dr Blam is terrible. He dismissed my pain, told me that my other doctor should be following me (even though my other doctor/pcp/referred me to an orthopedist) and told me that there is nothing that needs to be done except PT. He didn’t even do an assessment on me. He moved two of my legs so quickly and said, “see this is nothing, you’re not having pain when I do that so it’s not sciatica and there is no nerve being compressed. (Still didn’t address the ortho issue that I had like the clicking in my back, the muscle rigidity and tightness, and the aching pain) He didn’t even mention any alternatives. Basically because I didn’t qualify for surgery, he didn’t want to spend any more time on my case. He has terrible bedside manner— especially for someone who works in a ortho clinic. He also didn’t even pay attention to anything I said because he asked me the same question twice. After I just literally told him the answer. I was anxious before meeting him because I don’t want surgery and I don’t want any extreme measures or pain meds, I just want to know what is going on so that I may move forward and so I looked online at his reviews. I saw the negative reviews and thought, I shouldn’t just fall for these reviews, let me make this judgement. The bad reviews are 100% true. He literally is the most dismissive and rude doctor I have every met. I would never ever trust this guy to do my surgery. Never. And I don’t mind a cavalier doctor, but this guy is just beyond terrible. Dr Blam is terrible. Dr. Blam performed surgery on my L4, L5 discs. He did a great job and I was able to walk unaided after one week. He is so nice and understanding. In past years he did spine surgery on my husband twice after another surgeon messed up. I highly recommend Dr. Blam.
Dr. Blam is absolutely amazing. He just performed a surgery on my spine 3 weeks ago. I had 2 large herniated disc. He was so kind and informed of everything every step of the way. I highly recommend him.
I had a very brief and uninformative session with Dr. Blam, similar to some of the other reviews here. He didn't seem interested in having a dialogue with me about my symptoms and injury history, and pushed for quick answers about my current condition. I'm not a doctor, but I feel like having an open and thorough dialogue with the patient is the first thing that should happen in any doctor visit.
Agree with most of the reviews that everything was very rushed. After almost a year of chronic pain, I would have hoped for a little closer examination of the areas giving me trouble. The appointment started about an hour late and I spent maybe 10 minutes with the doctor including pre and post x-ray.
STAY AWAY!!! My experience with Blam was a waste of my time and money. Felt very rushed spoke to me less than 5 mins. He asked me questions about my last office visit with another doctor. If he looked in my chart he would have known certain answers to the questions he was asking. I would never recommend him to anyone.
Stay away from this one. He is by far the least engaged doctor I've seen. Was absolutely careless to my condition, did not care, did not look at my MRIs or film, and spent less than 5 minutes with me. He just wanted to rush me out the door. More distressing is him not being able to answer many of my related. His common answer was, "I don't know." Not comforting when you are going to see a specialist and he can't even give you a straight answer
I visited Mr Blam upon my PCP's referral regarding a lower back injury. Mr Blam spoke to me for less than 5 minutes. The 5 minutes of visit time was spent in rush, as if he were not interested in talking to me. He almost had one of his feet outside the door within those 5 minutes. I received his diagnosis after 2 days on other online portal. The letter was full of "perhaps" , " patient said" , "patient denied" , "as-needed" words and reflected denial responsibility. Very dissatisfied service.

Dr. Blam along with Dr Jamaris performed spine surgery on me. Both doctors did a great job. I am now pain free. I had been battling lumbar stenosis for about 10 years. I was hardly able to walk or stand the pain was so great prior to surgery. I would recommend both doctors.
Dr. Blam did both my cervical fusion (neck) and double lumbar fusion (back) in 2017. On a scale of 1 to 10, he is a 12. Surgeries were tremendously successful far exceeding expectations for success and recovery time. I am pain free for the first time in 45 years. Flew my 86 yo dad up for a consult for his back following a car wreck. He is truly a brilliant surgeon, but has limited time. Ask questions and he will answer til you are satisfied. His staff, especially surgerical staff are great.
Had an 800am appt, he was an hour late getting into the office, when he finally arrived, he didn't even physically examine my back or want to look at my films. I was in and out of his exam in less than 5 minutes. Very poor bedside manner.

I’ve had chronic neck/back pain for over 6 years, so I was very excited to finally see a specialist about it. When Dr. Blam first walked in the room he had me describe the issues I’ve been having. Not even a minute into my explanation he cut me off and told me it all sounded normal and that I should start physical therapy. To have a specialist barely listen to you while describing something that has caused you so much pain over the years, and then to just have him say it sounds normal, I was extremely upset. I was really hoping he would be able to give me some answers but it just seemed like he wanted to get my appointment over with. I went to a concert the other night with my son, I STOOD for most of the night! It was 4 bands! Thanks so much Dr. Blam! I've been recommending you to people BeFore my surgery!

Doctor Blam, is an excellent surgeon, he did a wonderful job on me. I had no pain or problems since the surgery. He was very informative on the procedure that was being done and my wait time on office appointments for not very long. His staff was wonderful as well and I would recommend him to others who are needing back surgery as well. It was a pleasure having him as my surgeon.

Dr. Blam came in and asked me to describe my problem. He then proceeded to speak over me and did not let me finish my sentences. He did not listen closely to my attempts to describe things in more detail. After assuring me it was nothing major like cancer, a fracture or an infection, he was ready to move on. He looked briefly at my back, but not in the affected area. He gave me the option to get X-rays but at the same time was dismissive of the notion that they would show anything useful.

My husband was in such severe pain and it altered his life all I can say is Dr. Yoon recommended Dr. Blam,we went to him~ he was absolutely amazing very matter-of-fact and to the point. Had the surgery done my husband is pain-free and doing wel!. I would recommend Dr Blam to anyone dealing with back pain, entire staff was amazing. I put in plenty of calls to the staff due to the pain my husband was in, they addressed everything immediately took great care of him we love them~Extremely grateful
Saw Dr. B. 4 continued pain/numbness/weak rt. leg & some left side after surgery by Dr. Gelb in 10/14. After review of X-ray & MRI, Dr. B. rapid fire list of possible Tx's. At time have other medical priorities and could he send note listing. He and his secretary (S?) said they would. After 3 follow-up calls & visit - nothing. Instead secretary called and stated Dr. B. referred me to their practice's DO (!) w/o explanation. Dr. B= another assembly line phy. Not real caring. Would not recommend

I waited over an hour after my scheduled time to have my first meeting with Dr. Blam. I was in the small examining room for over half an hour. When he finally entered he asked "What did you want from me?" and then interrupted me approximately 45 seconds later telling me that there was nothing he could do and suggesting I consider a procedure that he stated had no scientific background and of which he knew almost nothing. This was a waste of my money and time.

He rushed through the appointment, he didn't address all my concerns. He only wanted to talk about either my cervical spine or my lumber spine not both as he was sure to tell me he couldn't bill for both of them. This appointment was such a waste of my time and money. I've been in pain for a while with my back and finally had a MRI to see what the issues are, and was hoping this doctor could help me determine what actions if any he could provide or recommend so that I could get some relief.
