Dr. Nelson Tan Chao

Dr. Chao is the absolute best doctor. I have been a patient for 20 years and he is brilliant. He saved my husbands life after 9/11 and I don't trust any doctor more than I trust Dr. Chao. He is a gifted doctor that is always abreast of the latest medical research and is conservative in his approach, yet aggressive enough to cure you. He's the perfect balance.

I was referred to Dr Chow concerning my lungs. Upon arrival the secretary and nurse were friendly. After my vidals. Dr Chao entered and going over my medical history did not approve of a dr i told him was treating me for a different situation. It's been 2 1/2 years with Doctor Chao since moving from L.I. New York. He's my board certified internist and although his specialty is also allergy and immunology he's very knowledgeable in internal medicine. He's been keeping my health in check since my stroke. Dr. Chao is very patient and takes his time explaining everything.

Stared at his computer the entire visit with his back to me, demanded answers to irrelevant questions in an accusatory (inquisition like), manner and then took issue with every single response given to him. He also refused to locate, and view relevant records that had been forwarded to him in advance, refuted ESTABLISHED AND LONGSTANDING DIAGNOSIS by previous providers without any basis. Obviously, he was uninterested in hearing or knowing anything about me; rude, cold, arrogant, dismissive. If he doesn't want new patients, why accept them? It would be better then abusing them.

--does not return calls. had blood test results with numerous danger signs indicated. could not get doc to return my call to discuss. I have no idea if I'm sick with something major or not. --asked for a blood test last summer due to thyroid concerns - was in another state having symptoms. refused to fax the request to a lab i the state I was in because he thought insurance would deny it. so he wouldn't help. had to order and pay for my test result myself and it indeed showed numbers that were off so I needed to adjust my meds myself. They used to be so much more responsive and professional. One of the office staff is exceptionally rude too.

I have Moderate Asthma, I went to Dr. Chao's office for my first visit as I was looking for a new pulmonary doctor. I found Dr. Chao to be a nice man. But his office practices are not safe. They had me do a breathing test, and it was set up in another room. The nurse or women there brought in a zip lock bag full of cardboard tube and set it on the examining chair. After the test, she opened the zip lock bag and but the cardboard tube on what looked like an old used inhaler. Mind you none of the tubes were sealed, she had no gloves on. She handed me an inhaler and put one of the card board tubes on it. I said what is that? She said, Albuterol. I asked her, has someone else used that? She said yes, but that is why I put this cardboard tube on it. I said no way would I use an inhaler that was used by someone else. I told her I have my own, that is what I will use. I was so disgusted, and turned off because we are in the land of COVID and I realized I did a breathing test without knowing if the equipment was clean. I have both Asthma and Diabetes, I can't get covid, I can die. This doctor's office wanted me to take a deep breath out of a community inhaler!! I was so shaken, I ran out of the room and tried to find my way out the office. The women was running behind me trying to get me to stop and see the doctor. I was done!! I was shaken!! I made up some excuse that I had another appointment. I will NEVER go back there!! They never have to worry about me every going back. Caring and very knowledgeable, by far the best doc around, highly recommend

Dr. Chao is a Wonderful “ old school “ doctor who takes his time with his patient - he listens and gives any explanations that are needed . He calls you directly after blood work and tests are done ..I’ve Been a patient for years and I would not consider going to anyone else ..He was so kind and terrific with my mother in law also and took good care of her until she passed . Wonderful thorough doctor who spends time asking questions and makes diagnosis. Very intelligent. I recommend him highly.

Extremely nice doctor who is knowledgeable. The staff members work really hard too in order to help with any questions. Along with trying to get a patient an appointment to see him as soon as possible. 5 stars for sure.

I decided to try this Dr. because he was in/near the same building as my surgery Dr. This could of been the best random decision I have ever made. If I could honestly give them 6 stars I would. Everything from how clean, having chairs 6 feet apart because of covid, to how nice and humble everyone was. They actually seemed interested in knowing history not just about family and the reasons WHY but also questions you wouldn't think a doctor would ask all having to do with my shortness in breath/breathing as well as Dr. Chao asking my opinion if or what I wanted to do. I was so used to doctors just telling me to do this and you need to do that come see me every week for the rest of your life, it's unbelievable how different this place/ Dr.Chao is. If you have any allergy and/or pulmonary issues and your reading this review along with the other 5 star reviews I suggest for your self, the respect you would receive and just the comfort of actually going into a doctor's office. Please do yourself a favor and come here. I'm not saying there aren't other MD's out there that aren't like this place but if you find one definitely continue to go because I am definitely making this my primary and will let my family and friends know to come here. This is a long review but sometimes there are people, places or in this case a Dr who really deserve to be praised on all areas people judge MDs in. Do your self a favor and go see Dr. Nelson T. Today I went back to visit Dr. Chao after some recent blood work. He was as professional, patient and caring as he was on my first visit. Can't say enough great stuff about Dr. Chao. Coming from Long Island N.Y. and recently moved here I would say I hit a HOME RUN with Dr. Chao! His staff are all friendly and caring. Battling - Battaboom

Possibly the best doctor I’ve ever seen. He is knowledgeable, caring attentive and actually talks to his patients. He is the old country doctor which the knowledge and experience of one of those Yale department heads

One of the most thorough professionals I've known. He's local so I picked him out of the insurance website. Well, did I get lucky and hit a home run! Very comprehensive physical exams. And responds promptly to messages and his portal. Can't ask for more. p.s. Polite and helpful office staff too.

I suspect this is a scam non existent business.They keep phoning me trying to get me to pay a bill. Wrong name, and I've never been there before. Scammers. or Very incompetent billing:)

My rating is based on Dr Chao and his assistant, Basil. Thry are wonderful and friendly. Dr Chao's knowledge is quite extensive, and has been a huge help to my husband. He's been to several doctors about his allergies and asthma, but Dr Chao was the first to offer any answers. Now, because I like Dr Chao and his assistant so much, I didn't dock any rating about his secretary. She is crass, rude and literally sighed with me on the phone when I had a request for her. In person she really is no better. You feel like you are an inconvenience to her by the way she treats you. I have been a patient of Dr. Chao for many years. Despite my having moved to Florida, I still come to see him at least once or twice a year in CT. He is a very caring doctor and I would highly recommend him to anyone with Asthma and/or allergies.

My husband and I have been with Dr. Chao for several years on the recommendation of a friend. I couldn't be happier with the care he gives and the compassion and concern he has for us. He is very knowledgeable and I always feel at ease and well educated regarding diagnosis when I've seen him. His "bedside manor" is spot on - always personable and professional. He's the best!

Dr. Chao has taken excellent care of me, my allergies, and COPD lungs for over 30 years! Dr. Chao is a superb, warm, and brilliant physician who, when needed, goes way beyond normal professional expectations. When he moved his office to Shelton, I continued to drive from Westport .
