These disabilities may arise from conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system such as neck and back pain, sports injuries, or other painful conditions affecting the limbs, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Pain management is often an important part of the role of the physiatrist. For diagnosis and evaluation, a physiatrist may include the techniques of electromyography to supplement the standard history, physical, x-ray and laboratory examinations. The physiatrist has expertise in the appropriate use of therapeutic exercise, prosthetics (artificial limbs), orthotics and mechanical and electrical devices.

You'll never feel as if your welcomed here. The wytheville office with dr.shelton feels sketchy . Doctors never stay with them always someone new every year or less. Any prescription medication requires once a month visit . And every other month drug testing

Dr Joiner and his staff have treated me for moderate to severe low back pain for almost 9 years. Always kind, and professional, they are the reason I can function as a contributing member of society. Sometimes the wait is long, but when I have needed extra attention at an appointment, I have relieved it. I extend that courtesy to my fellow man. Knowing I may wait I bring a book and enjoy some quiet time until it is my turn to be seen. I could not be happier with Dr. Joiner and all of his staff!

Worst place to go.Had two appointments and both had to be rescheduled by them. On the thirdth visit appointment at 8. The place is full and I guess we all had an eight appointment. Had two more appointments to take family to and haven't seen the doctor. Waiting outside with a pager at 10. Never again ????

My appointment was at noon. Upon arrival I was told he was 2 hrs behind. I was given a beeper and told to go back to my car. Dr. Joiner's patients could not stay in the waiting room. It is a good thing the car was warm on a cold day. Two hours later I was beeped. I waited in the waiting room for another hour and then was called in. Another Thirty minutes of waiting in the examining room I was done and got my 2 shots which took a whole 5 minutes to administer. This is the second time with Dr. Joiner and the same thing happened the first time. I traveled 90 miles to Roanoke and had a 90 mile trip back. It would be nice for the doctor to be on time, since my time is valuable, too. Three and a half hours is unacceptable? Either too many patients are scheduled or he needs more time to be scheduled for the patients. I talked to several patients waiting and they were not happy either. At noon they had been waiting for more than 2 hours. I hope the next time I come Dr. Joiner can see me in a timely fashion.

Unprofessional and what I'd consider unethical...Dr.Joiner took exception to a negative Facebook comment I made about his practice, which was my personal opinion based on my own observation, and then, since I was not his patient, subsequently fired my husband, who had been his patient for many years for pain management. My husband was not aware of my review and had in no way expressed any disappointment in his care, but that didn't matter. Dr. Joiner didn't like the negative comment, so since he couldn't punish me directly, he took it out on my husband ?? If that's not unethical, I don't know what is. This has caused my husband a great deal of pain and misery, since we moved out of state and he's not been able to find a new doctor and now has no former pain doctor to help him with his medication needs or from who he can get a referral. Dr.Joiner, you should be ashamed of yourself! If you can't take the criticism, you shouldn't be in a public service job. It was totally wrong for you to dismiss a patient who never had one cross word to say about you or your staff!

I paid my $45 copay just to be told they couldn't do anything for my foot pain. I guess injections are big money and all that matters. Foot was shattered and constant pain is my new freaking life now. Didn't have to give away my money for that result.

Dr Joiner has been wonderful helping me deal with my lower back injury. Today, I was very unhappy with staff. My appointment today had been rescheduled earlier in the month. I received phone call telling me about appointment today. I told them I had received my second nerve burn earlier this month. Staff on phone insisted that I still needed a 3rd shot. Stopped work early today to attend appointment. Once I arrived, nurse informed me that I didn't need a third nerve burn and I could leave. She giggled and said at least I didn't drive all the way from West Virginia. I told her that if I had driven from West Virginia that they would have had to call the cops. She said it wasn't her fault and I didn't have to be rude and she just walked away. This is not the first time that they had messed up an appointment. Some of his staff is really lacking customer service skills. I am highly disappointed in the way that I was treated by his staff today. I was made to feel like my time is unimportant. I have never left a review for a doctor so that should tell you how disgusted we are with Dr Joiner. Wait times of HOURS! The waiting room is ALWAYS FULL! One time, I stood up & asked everybody how long they had been there bc I sat for 2+ hours with some of the same folks. Plus- he is pompous & smug-can't stand his attitude. Once, I opened my exam room door to find him having a convo with someone (maybe a drug rep) about yardwork and his grandkids, I kept peeking out for over 20 mins & he kept talking. So I approached him directly & asked when we would be helped but I got the usual excuse that "we take patients as they come in but sometimes we have emergencies" w/ his nasty attitude. Yeah- like chatting about yardwork while his waiting room is FULL of folks. Plus-I am still in pain! The infrequent injections just aren't enough. I was told he was the only place in town to deal with pain but I see others listed online. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

If I could give a Zero I would. Do not go to this Place stay far from it. I went there about 6 years ago for a back injury I had then and I still have but its easier And I will Never Go Back. I saw for pain my orthopedic dr sent me there and because I told her no Injections in my back she said the Pain was " in My head" and that I needed to " go back to church and that I was a sacrificial lamb and I needed to find Jesus. I realize this is a pain management business not a time management business(clearly).. but when you make an appointment for 10am and are not seen until 12:30pm and then wait in ANOTHER ROOM for an additional HOUR and claim its because you are "backed up" (because your horrible attempt at scheduling) its very unprofessional. How can you get a medical degree and be so terrible at the simple act of scheduling appointments? Do you guys need new receptionists or a better appointments program?? Either way this place is horrible and I wouldn't recommend unless you have several hours to spare after your scheduled appointment. Also I should mention that I wouldnt write this after just one visit, it has been this way for the 3 times I've taken my dad here and we will not be back. Wish there was a 0 star review. I would never refer anyone to go to this office. I was seen today by a PA who told me that they didn’t help patients with sickle cell disease, which they could’ve told me before the appointment was made and after the referral was sent by my primary care doctor. During the visit the PA called me colored which is definitely highly offensive to African American people. He also did nothing but talk and he didn’t examine me at all or recommend anything to help my pain at all. I would not recommend this practice to anyone I know. I was there for an appointment with my mom and entered a very crowded waiting room. I have been with her for most of her appointments so this was not a surprise. I was horrified when a very rude staff member announced if you were given a pager you had to wait outside until you were called. The room was filled with elderly patients most of which were in wheelchairs and walkers. I understand we are under Covid restrictions but to ask a older patient to wait outside in 90 degree weather is inexcusable for 2 or 3 hours !As soon as I find my mother another pain management doctor we will not be back to this practice!!!! Having made an appointment ten days in advance, I arrived after a fifty mile drive to be told that I would need to be rescheduled. The receptionist said that the staffer performing the procedure I needed had been called away in response to an emergency. I asked why I hadn't been informed only to be told that a message had been left on my home phone two days earlier. In fact, there was no such message. And does this even make sense? If the office knew two days in advance of my appointment, where does the emergency fit in? Such disregard for patients in need of help is simply unacceptable. I was using Joiner for my pain management for over 3 years and i DO NOT rcomemd to anyone that they should let these people be in charge of their health care. The practice has gone to a cash pay money hungary joke. They have a revolving door for their staff and they use some kind of guideline for their amount of MGs of pain meds. In my treatment after 6 spinal sugerys they cut back the amount of meds and use a 1 size fits all. They stopped my treatment after i stated to the P.A. at that time that the small amount of meds was useless. They stated in a letter i was in violation of the "opioid contract" that i signed because i wanted my meds taken back up to where they did help some. The place is a sad joke compared to the Dr. that i go to now.

I have brought clients here and they like him. But the wait to see him due to multiple bookings at the same time is ridiculous! He has a nice bedside manner but waiting at least 2 hours every time to see him is horrible! Don’t overbook it’s double book! And certainly not during the COVID pandemic, making people wait outside in their cars and/or sitting outside when you have a large enough waiting room to have people sit inside 6feet apart is unconscionable! A lot of the patients he sees are elderly and making them wait in their cars and have to walk up a long ramp after their pager goes off is so stupid! He may be a great doctor but double And triple booking for the same time and making patients sit outside in the heat is the worst! If I could give negative stars I would! HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANOTHER PROVIDER! NOT HIM!!!

I am a disabled RN with a varied background including administration. I worked with top professionals in Phila for 10 yrs. Teaching hospitals, long term care & a top psych facility. I moved to Virginga to help older relatives who raised me & beat the rat race. I understand the system & the difficulties involving insurance companies! I really like Dr. Joiner & know that he is a great doctor as is his associates (Dr. Nemec, etc). I have had many surgeries, proceduries, etc. I am in poor health but know My quality of health is much better due to his care. Its almost 90 miles to his Roanoke office. Do NOT go to Dr. Joiner. I sat for over two hours waiting for my appointment , and dealing with the rude front desk staff. When I finally got to see the doctor, he started arguing about my diagnoses- which had already been determined by two separate specialists. He kept suggesting “self help” methods, all that I had already tried. He then proceeded to give me the bare minimum dosage of a steroid, which made it wear off within a few weeks. When I called back for a medical record, none existed.

Another time we called to confirm the appt day and it was a different day then what was scheduled at the last visit and here recently we missed an appointment but they gave no call before to remind us nor did they call after the missed appt. Highly do not recommend. I take my grandmother here regularly and there is always at least an hour wait if not more. i had an agreement with this office to pay $50 a month so I could continue to be seen. I went there with my $50 and they said I couldn't be seen without paying $350 towards my balance. I was left with no medication and was not seen. I was just told to call the billing office which I had already done. Also, an even bigger issue was the fact that I had requested my records so I could send them in for my short term leave from work. They gave me the records, however it included someone else's treatment notes and diagnosis. When I brought it to their attention that, even though it had my name on them, that the records were not mine, I was told to write the correct information on a sheet of paper and they would fix the records. I did that but was never given a copy of the corrected information. This caused my leave at work to be denied and I am now having to go through an appeals process. They seem to be very unorganized at this office and clearly are not worried about being guilty of a hipaa violation. The only time I saw dr joiner himself was when I had to have a procedure done. The last interaction I had with him was when I had a spinal cord stimulator trial done. They gave me a little medication to help with my nerves but it did not help with the pain of the procedure. While I was screaming in pain and holding on to the end of the table, I asked for something for pain and they refused by saying that they were almost done. FYI when someone puts a foot long lead up your spine without pain medication, it is extremely painful. I was scheduled to have the perm implant put in however no one at this office ever mentioned that my a1c had to be at a certain level. They also did not go over any information on what I could or couldn't do while I had the trial in. My surgery was ultimately cancelled because I was not made aware of the restrictions. They never seemed to really care. They just wanted to get you in and out of the office. I will be terminating my contract with them and finding a new provider who actually takes care of their patients. i had an agreement with this office to pay $50 a month so I could continue to be seen. Dr. Joiner, Dr. Martin and staff are truly the best at what they do. They care and show it with thier actions and professionalism. Been going for over 1 1\2 years and drive out of state to have them as my support and my doctor. Highly recommend Dr. Joiner and his staff.

Wonderful Doctor, he’s been helping me since 2002. Would not dream of going anywhere else. Yes sometimes his wait time is long but he is a VERY THOROUGH DOCTOR and gets it right the first time. I was going to the VA but opted to stop due to horrible care. Dr. Joiner in my opinion the best there is. Just sit and wait and watch TV. Semper Fidelis

I have been seeing Dr. Joiner's office for a little over a year now. The first appointment, there was a long wait, but I didn't mind as I had taken off work and had nothing else planned for the day. Each appointment after, had far shorter wait times exceptnone, but a patient had an emergency. Dr. Joiner and his staff are very friendly and understanding. I don't feel any fear when I go in. I'm not sure why so many people dislike him. I will never change pain management doctors again!

Office is impossible to get in touch with. No one ever answers the phone to take payments. You will wait hours after your appointment time. Do not recommend.

I had 6 facet joint injections in this office by Dr.Joiner. I waited 4 hours past my appointment times before seeing him for the consultation, and over an hour in the day of the procedure. His front office staff is very rude. A couple of years later I was referred again. He called me a liar about the procedures I told him I had already had and pressed on my back so hard I almost fell off the table. I left in tears and will NEVER RETURN. He is a horrible doctor and doesn't care about the patients

If not for Brenda, one of the nurses and Dr Joiner himself I probably would not be here today. Over four years ago my pain had gotten so sever that I had seriously had started looking at options that would definitely end the suffering. I literally owe my life to Brenda for carrying enough to set down with me so I could explain the problem to her. She immediately pin pointed the area in my back and within twenty minutes had me on the table for my first round of injections. There is usually a waiting period but only because they take whatever time is necessary for the best care of each and every patient. I would recommend Dr Joiner and his remarkable staff to anyone that is in need of pain control. Dr Joiner is a credit to his profession. I referred by a spine srgn. 1/4 of the way thru treatment, at every appt, I asked for something else OTHER THAN DRUGS for the pain. I was told I wish I had more pts like you, everyone wants more drugs. THEN they no longer treating me b/c, they said, I was flagged by the DEA FOR DOCTOR SHOPPING! THE DOCS I SAW WERE THERE! I was referred to another pain mgt clinic--guess who was one of the docs--Joiner. I never went. And was charged for apt that I was turned away. My PCP never got "DEA" report

This has got to be THE WORST office I have EVER visited or tried to get in touch with. I know I am overweight and I know that could be part of the reason why I am in so much pain, but that does NOT mean that I do not deserve to be helped and treated with dignity and respect. These people are so far beyond rude it's unimagineable. I've been there twice and seen 2 different people. No explanation. No refills on my meds, no returns on my phone calls. This office is insane

Waited in waiting room over an hour to be checked in. Another hour to be called to a room. Waited 2 hours in an exam room that was cold. Checked with staff after a hour wait. Staff said that the provider would be there when she got there. Never saw provider. After 2 hour wait in exam room I left. My employer and my husbands employer refer patients regularly to this office. May need to reevaluate this.

The appointment was for my mother. We waited over an hour and a half to be called. When my mother was called back they refused to allow me to go with her. She is 85 years old, hard of hearing and needs physical assistance for mobility. They stated that it was "Physician Policy" to only allow the patient back. They would call the family member after the assessment and to discuss the treatment plan. NO THANK YOU!!!!! What is that office hiding???? I will never recommend this practice.
