Mr. Mohamed Nader Akl

I was first referred to this practice in 2021. I called to make the appt and explained the reasons. The person I spoke with said they didn't treat that issue and wouldn't schedule. A different MD referred me 3 months ago, and this time they schedule. I go to the appt and couldn't have been more disappointed. I started to explain my symptoms and what has already been tried/explored unsuccessfully, but the Dr interrupted me and wouldn't let me explain multiple times. He absolutely had a diagnosis in mind before coming in the room and wasn't open to hear anything that didn't fit that. He offered a few "bandaid" medications that I am unable to take due to documented contraindications. I declined them for those reasons, yet he insisted that it wasn't a big deal. I felt unheard. I won't be returning.

Saw Dr Akl a few times in office and was put on Keflex as a UTI prophylaxis which resulted in a bad episode of C Diff for which I was hospitalized for. Keflex didn’t seem to help my UTIs either and I attempted to get in to see Dr Akl in office but was told by reception he was out of town and all who was on staff was the Nurse Practitioner and didn’t offer me an appt with the NP. I called today and they were closed (on a Friday), so I called the emergency answering service due to bright red blood (a LOT OF IT) and passing a blood clot in my urine a few hours later. I never received a phone call, text or otherwise. I’m scared and don’t know what to do. Went to the ER for the same symptoms earlier this week and they gave me a few days worth of cipro, which hasn’t changed a thing. I’m lost and just blown away that no one at Dr Akl’s office could return my call.

Dr Akl is an excellent surgeon and great bedside manner. I had a complete hysterectomy and a bladder sling - Dr Akl made me feel confident going into the procedure and his follow up was awesome! I got 2 opinions before going to AZ Urology and Dr Akl was confident that he would be able to complete via robot (barring ant issues). The recovery time was great with the minimally invasive surgery. Their staff needs some education about how to treat those of us with impaired movement/function. The test chair was broken, but they decided to use it even though I'm unsteady on my feet, and a fall would be disasterous. Explained I would not schedule surgery unless ALL providers were in network. I went through all the tests/bloodwork/visits, scheduled surgery, only to find out that the surgical assistant would not be covered because they are NOT in network with any insurance (it states this on their website, which I had to visit because no one answered their phones, and their mailbox was full...NOT good). Had to cancel surgery, and I am appalled at the waste of time, $$, and insurance $$'s.

I had a great experience with this office. The doctor explained all my options in the first visit gave me time to think and read about every option. Surgery and recovery we’re better than I expected. I give this office 5 stars for sure and I recommended it to friends with similar problems

I am giving an updated review for Dr Akl. Since my original review he has tried to resolve some of the issues I had with communication and office response. I am still healing at this time and so the final outcome of the surgery is yet to come.

UPdated: The Doctor and I had a long conversation regarding my original 2 star rating. He states he will talk to the hospital, and make sure there is adequate information. The phone systems with their office are similar to others in the valley. They are horrible. They are trying to respond more timely. This was my original posting. I am a health care worker. The Dr gave minimal information. I kept asking questions and making calls to the office with no written information given. The most information I got was right before the procedure by the Dr. but when the surgery was over he told my husband the surgery was more involved than he thought. Didn’t he know what my condition was before he did the surgery? Then I ended up staying overnight at the hospital and the next day the staff was not sure what I needed and said I would have a catheter for a week! The hospitalist then says I would have to have the catheter taken out and an ultrasound to make sure my bladder was empty. But when I got to the Dr appointment a week later, it was an aide removing my catheter and told me to go home. She did give me written information about what to do if I don’t urinate. There is nothing checking if I am not completely emptying my bladder. The Dr may be a good surgeon but it is not the kind of experience you deserve as a patient! Update: The Dr had a long conversation about the issues I had. He stated he would communicate with the hospital and his staff. He did not say he would add additional information to explain the procedure or what was required for the procedure. He did give me his cell number. Since that time I have had issues in relation to my procedure and his staff have responded quickly and have been helpful. I highly recommend Dr.Akl and his office team. I was referred to his office by a friend who also had a great experience. From the first visit I felt comfortable and well informed about all my options. Dr Akl listened to me and gave me time to ask all my questions and answered every single one of them. He gave me time to think about all my options with written information about each option. Then on my follow up visit he went through all the options again and helped me choose the option that would be a good fit for my goals and lifestyle. My whole experience was 5 starts. My first visit was easy to schedule and the front and back office personnel were helpful and professional. Dr Akl was great in explaining all my options and helped me choose the right option that align with my goals. Everything went perfect and I am glad that I chose that office

Dr Akl is very caring and detailed. He gave me all my options and realistic expectations after surgery. He communicated with my other doctors to make sure I am a good candidate for surgery and the results were above my expectation.

Surgery results were above my expectation with complete resolution of the bladder problem. Now able to enjoy life without worries. Aside from a ton of paper work to fill in the first visit everything went smoothly afterwards. Dr Akl is very professional and accommodated my timing needs during the scheduling process. When my mom decided to have surgery he scheduled her at her preferred date and time to avoid any transportation issues. Surgery was great and she went home the next day. This office does not follow the CDC recommendations. I was scheduled for a urodynamics test early in December. On December 3rd, I noticed some sinus issues and was made aware that several members of my household tested positive for Covid on the 1st. I called and canceled my appointment due to my exposure and symptoms. I rescheduled my appointment for December 17. According to CDC, there is a 10 day period from when symptoms being. Then you need to be symptom free for 72 hours following that 10 day period. Af that point you are no longer contagious. I went in to take my test, urinated in the machine. The lady then comes back at tells me I need to have a negative test to continue. If this is a office protocol that they are making themselves, they should be informing the patients. horrible experience. Dr rushed me into a surgery I did not need at all! He also overbooked his surgery day and i was in there all day waiting and feel because of this he did not do a good job on me. He also lied in his notes . I had to have an additional two other surgeries in order to get out of pain and eventually had the mesh removed . the other two drs told me i never needed surgery in the first place after reading this drs original notes seeing i had a very minimal issue. I am so much worse off then i was prior to surgery. I found out there were other non invasive options that i could have done that were never offered by him. he seems to want to rush to surgery. My in office experience was not that great. Heard front desk staff talking about patients, and those that were not happy with the doctor. Dr Allen was amazing. He fixed my problem 100% Surgery went great,was quick,pain was minimal. Worst part is the catheter for 5 days after but once that was done my bladder leak issue was over..no more pads,no more leaks..Fantastic ????.. Thankyou Dr Akl..I highly recommend him????????

My PCP referred me to Dr Mohamed Akl in June, 2017 when I had a dropped bladder and prolapsed uterus. I was impressed with the Mesa office - very little wait time and the staff was incredible, especially those in the back rooms. They made me feel comfortable during the embarrassing tests and instructions. Dr Akl also addressed my constipation, which I've had problems with for 50 years and prescribed medication that helped. He didn't encourage me to have surgery until late in 2020 when my bladder had dropped considerably more. The surgery went just fine - Dr Akl had prepared me for the days following the surgery that might be tough - but I felt GREAT! Just a few days after surgery, when I had a bowel movement, I thought to myself ; "this is a miracle!" No more straining or bloating like in the past. To me it was a bonus - the purpose of the surgery was to keep my bladder inside my body! I cannot thank Dr Akl enough and highly recommend him. The office was a little different. Office staff talk about other patients at the lobby reception area. The person doing the testing was fantastic.... When I went in for surgery I was told that day that Dr would not be in to see me after surgery. Then a week later I started having issues, and twelve days after surgery found out that surgical packing materials were left inside of me. Dr claimed it was the hospitals fault. After a investigation it was found that Dr Akl was at fault. To this date he had not accepted responsibility.

I was referred to Dr Akl by my primary care Doctor and was not disappointed. He is very knowledgeable, seriously accessed my problem and laid out a plan for me. He performed my surgery flawlessly and I have had no problems with my recovery. I highly recommend Dr Akl!

I hadrectocele/cystocele/enterocele repair done in October 2018. Prior to the consult appointment, I had no idea a pessary and PT could have kept my multiple prolapses from getting worse to hold off surgery. Post consult I STILL had no clue because he didn’t give me any conservative options at trying to learn to live with it. He told me my only option was surgery. After TWO other surgeon consultations, I was told that my ligaments and organs weren’t anchored properly which would lead to excessive pain and almost immediate failure (which they did). I can feel my bladder sling in my pelvis. I have a terrible rectocele again. My uterus is now falling causing debilitating pain. I’m only 36. I have a young family. He didn’t help. He made it worse. Quick and dirty. Maybe he is not familiar with working on younger women.

In giving my review… I have given it much thought, little over a year, just to make sure my review was accurate. I was recommended to Dr. Mohamed AKL MD by my primary physician because I had mentioned that I was experiencing small amount of leakage when I would get out of my car and with some activities and also some feeling of my bladder not emptying completely at night. I had also mentioned that over my lifetime I had always felt some constipation. My first visit with Dr Akl was 11/24/2018. At the visit, he had mentioned that my bladder was falling out and that I needed surgery. He recommended to me to have it by the end of the year to get it included in my insurance. Hearing that my bladder was falling out and after talking with his nurse and hearing her say that said she had seen woman coming in carrying their bladder in hand and that I would not want that to happen. I was in immediate fear and agreed to schedule the surgery asap. It was scheduled for 12/24/2018. The procedure was APE repair, USVVS, Sling This was my (18th) surgery that I had in my life. This was by far the most painful of them all. To this day I could not be more unhappy that I ever made that decision to have the surgery. More so, I regret that I let my fear overrun my mind and not get a second opinion. Since the surgery I had gone to my gynecologist and she was very surprised that I had the surgery and that she prior to the surgery did not see that my bladder was falling. I out of my own stupidity, did not know that a gynecologist would be a factor with my bladder, only if I had consulted with her…I would not have had the surgery. My results have been that it had been over a year that I have not felt comfortable with myself. My leakage is at least 3x as much as before and now worse because when I must go to the bathroom, I am not able to hold it at all. If I am not close to a bathroom, I now urinate in my clothing. This is very embarrassing for I am only 57 yrs old, not 70. I now must rotate my body in order to empty my bladder, this is 2x as much as I had felt before. I still feel constipated and the worse thing ever, is it has totally ruined my sex life with my husband. Our sex was incredible and now it almost does not exist. It is painful and I do not climax at all as I had done every time before. To this day, I am afraid of the pain every time my husband and I even try to have intercourse. I cry almost every day now and am depressed because this surgery has ruined me and my relationship. I am now taking anti-depressant medication to try to help with this ordeal. I am in constant fear that my husband will leave me for another due to lack of sex. I have since asked for my records to see what was written. I am more upset to find that in the records dated 02/16/2019, it states that “She is happy with the results of her surgery”. This is a total lie. I would never had stated that. I have never been happy with the results. It took over a year to feel that I have somewhat healed, thus the review over a year later. I must state, in my records it does not show any photos of what needed to be corrected. I am worse than I ever was prior going into see Dr. Akl. I have to question since there are no photos of proof, that since I scheduled asap because of fear and to get it done for year end urgency, that this procedure was not in dire need. I recommend that if you are told that you need a surgery, to get a second option immediately. Don’t go through the rest of your life regretting you ever met Dr. Akl and trusted him or his staff on what is needed. Duane is spouse. I am Margie Wilkins-9-11-47 Post surgery 3 1/2 months I am well and experiencing a great benefit in both bowel and bladder function. No leaking urine except if overly full; postpone, and then sneeze and only occasionally.

After seeing a couple of other doctors who could not quite figure out why I was in pain and had me simply focusing on kegels, I found Dr. Akl (online research). He recognized the IC right away, put me on the regimen, and my pain went from a 9/10 to zero. It feels wonderful! Dr. Akl and his staff are kind, understanding and patient.

Let's face it, if you need Dr. Akl, you have issues that aren't fun to deal with. Having said that, not only Dr. Akl, but his whole support staff do their very best, to make you feel comfortable, while dealing with a very personal issue. I don't know the technical term for what procedure I had, but I had a hysterectomy several years ago, and now, in my 60's, needed things inside lifted. From the first phone call, his office staff treated me like I was their favorite patient. Even though I had to redo appointments, they never made me feel like I was putting them out. On the contrary, they were always happy and friendly! Dr. Akl, himself, was very gentle, and caring. Made me feel comfortable from the 1st appointment. I loved that they give you a folder, with his credentials and a list of all your appointments and dates and times...very helpful! I wasn't happy about having to go to Shea Blvd. for the surgery, (Piper Surgical Ctr.) But I can honestly say, that should I ever need any other surgeries, I would choose that facility, totally worth the drive from Mesa. From the check in to the Pre-Op and the Post OP the staff there was upbeat and friendly and couldn't say enough about how great Dr. M. Akl was, and also mentioned that his Brother was great as well. When you are going under the knife in a few minutes, it was comforting for the nurses preparing you for surgery, to be telling you how lucky you are to have Dr. Akl. They said that he is a great Dr. and ALL his patients have a great recovery! Very comforting. Also, the surgical team that Dr. Akl uses, well, I can't say enough. I have had several other unrelated surgeries with other Dr.'s, and I have had issues with the Anesthesia. I would be so sick afterwards, throwing up, and then on some occasions, nauseous for over a month. Even though I was taking anti nauseous meds I lost 15 lbs. I actually dreaded the month after surgery more than the surgery itself! I told this to the Anesthesiologist just before surgery, he said he had a plan, and thought he could help. After the surgery, I was fine, no Nausea and actually gained weight in the next month, (too much comfort food) :) And...he actually hand wrote down what he gave me during surgery, and handed it to my husband, so if I have any future surgeries, they will know what to give me! I know, shocking! Very impressive! After surgery, they went the extra mile to make sure you would be well prepared upon arrival home! I think this says a lot about a Dr. When he provides such a great atmosphere for your surgery, and cares about your emotional well being as well! I took flowers and pie into his office post op...I've never done that before....like I said at the beginning of this review.... given the nature of the issue, Dr. M. Akl and his entire staff and surgical center couldn't have made any more effort for my comfort, recovery, and well being! I'm doing great! I would highly recommend! Horrible experience with this doctor. Terrible bedside manner. After a surgical procedure to a very sensitive area, the sutures opened up and he advised and encouraged a revision surgery, although in his medical notes he lied and said he advised against it, I have the notes. Then the sutures from the revision opened up again and I was left with a botched procedure with no options to fix it because the tissue was so damaged. Now I am disfigured and in constant pain. He is an amazing specialist, so knowledgeable. He explains everything thoroughly. My surgery went well and recovery was far quicker than I anticipated. I highly recommend this doctor and this office. The are amazing!

There are thousands of women who have problems with bladder leakage it's the most unpleasant feeling to have. I didn't want to be that women wearing diper underwear. I am very pleased with the results of my surgery. I can actually get up and walk to the restroom without leaking. Today I went shopping and had the urge, but waited about a half and hour before I did anything about it. It is a joy not to be leaking all the time or have to plan a stop every hour or two to use the restroom. Besides being a skilled surgeon Dr Akl listens and from there works on the solution. After my surgery I had an infection problem and he was right on it. The communication between him and his staff is fantastic. I never felt abandoned. Speaking of his staff, they are well organized and run an excellent office. I admit I was a bit apprehensive about having surgery but Dr Akl was reassuring and I'm glad I did; I feel better every day. Thank you all so much.

I highly recommend Dr. M. Akl. I have been his patient for some time now & suffer from a bladder disorder. He is not only very knowledgeable in his field but compassionate. He listens patiently & gives more than one alternative to your treatment options...he's not one to jump to surgery. His staff is also kind, understanding & thorough.

My primary Dr. referred me to Dr.Akl. The best thing that happened to me. Dr Akl explained everything and addressed my concerns. I was gave several options and I chose surgery. I'm so happy with my results. The office personnel are so professional. I will and would refer Dr. Akl to all.

I received successful care and surgery for my bladder sling and rectocele from Dr. Akl in September 2018. Although I am still in the healing process, everything went as expected. Dr. Akl explained the procedures and what I should expect afterward prior to the surgery. He and his staff were always courteous and responsive to any needs I had while under his care. I highly recommend him.
