I did a RESUM with him. It was a total failure. During the RESUM, my body was shaking but he went ahead and did 7 shots--he told me I was not helping. That caused lot of damages including blood clots. They also did not provide post-op instructions for how to take care of my catheter. I ended up visiting ER three times. 2 months after the surgery, I had LUTS symptoms and he was quick to give me antibiotics and told me that if I am not happy, I can go see another Dr. After seeing another Dr, I was told that my bladder near the prostate was damaged and the symptoms I had were related to the inflamed prostate after the surgery. 3 months later my BPH symptoms became worse. Stay away from him and Urology Austin. It's a total mess.

An outstanding and thoughtful urologist who deservedly enjoys the trust and respect of other physicians in the Austin area. My wife and I appreciated his sorting out her diagnosis of kidney stones and, as a physician myself, I left grateful and impressed.

Writing is what I do. If I've had a bad experience, you REALLY don't want my review. If it's a good one, you're going to be very pleased. This review is for my old friend Dr. McClelland. About 10 years ago, I was victim to an auto accident when some dimwit ran a red light and hit me broadside. Although I walked away with no visible injuries, I immediately started developing an unexplained, indescribably earth-shattering, burning sensation in my bladder. It felt like a horrid, constant bladder infection, but there WAS no infection. I was convinced that the situation was a neurological one caused by the accident. I tried Lyrica; I saw a pain specialist and had a spinal block procedure. Nothing worked from these first months of treatment, and I had to leave my job. I was also caring for my then-toddler son. The dimwit's insurance company refused to reimburse me for my treatment unless I had a urologist testify that my condition could have been caused by the trauma from the wreck. Enter Dr. McClelland, who decides we need to dive into an expensive and invasive procedure called a "cystoscopy" to rule out other causes. If you haven't had one, a cystoscopy entails letting the good doc shove a camera up your ureters toward your kidneys. It was a far more painful, terrifying, and traumatic experience than I ever could have imagined. After it was all over, McClelland billed me for a tidy sum that I believe was around the $5,000 range, and formally stated for the insurance record that he SAW NO REASON for my discomfort. He DID NOT think that my pain could have been caused by trauma from the accident, and he had "no idea" why I was claiming discomfort! Thanks, doctor...I'm so glad I had you in my corner. Well, as it turns out, my treatment expenses from the wreck WERE reimbursed, and that was all I had asked for...no more than that. Unlike this doctor, the defendant's insurance company had a little compassion. In the end, what delivered me was physical therapy, paid for out-of pocket AFTER all this nonsense ended. It also turns out that the condition I suffered from, widely known as "Interstitial Cystitis", is seen as a neurological condition that can be triggered by trauma from injuries and accidents. Urologists are supposed to know how to identify and treat I.C., but I'm assuming McClelland was too busy thinking about his bottom line and stalling my presumed insurance fraud. That's the only way I can frame the torturous procedure and his refusal to back me up. Since he only served his own interests on this one, I guess he thought I was some malingerer looking to pull in a tidy sum from a claim. How nice. Flash forward to today...I now have kidney function problems and recurrent kidney infections that MAY be caused by urinary retention from scarring of the ureters. I'm specialist-bound. I'm also learning that this scarring MAY have been caused by the CYSTOSCOPY I enjoyed so much. In effect, Dr. McClelland insinuated a procedure on me that traumatized--and even may have permanently injured me--while failing to identify and treat what is a WIDELY known condition. This was the first of two times I have been traumatized by a provider, and it still makes me shudder to think about that experience with him. I have known some absolutely wonderful doctors in my time...but McClelland, for me, landed on far opposite side of the spectrum. Because of my current situation, I may have to undergo another cystoscopy in the near future; and if so, it will be performed an already-designated urologist who has visibly earned the trust of other Yelpers. I see that McClelland has not, and think I might not be alone in being absolutely terrified of this man. Writing is what I do. If I've had a bad experience, you REALLY don't want my review. If it's a good one, you're going to be very pleased. This review is for my old friend Dr. McClelland. … More

I was referred to Dr. McClelland by my primary care physician because I noticed blood in my urine. My first appointment with Dr. McClelland was on November 7. He explained that the most likely cause of the blood was kidney stones, or that there was no cause at all. He then scheduled me for a CAT scan to see if I indeed had kidney stones. My CAT scan was administered on November 9th in Dr. McClelland’s office. The CAT scan was administered with and without IV contrast. At my follow-up appointment with Dr. McClelland on November 16th, Dr. McClelland told me that my CAT scan looked normal. He did not see any signs of kidney stones. Since kidney stones were ruled out, he said he wanted to perform a Cystoscopy to rule out more serious causes of the blood in my urine. On December 1st, I went back to Dr. McClelland’s office for the Cystoscopy. It was a quick, but VERY unpleasant procedure. I was extremely uncomfortable every time I urinated for 2 days after the procedure, and had a 24-hour case of diarrhea due to the antibiotic I had to take. After the procedure, Dr. McClelland said that everything looked normal. He suggested that I go back to my primary care physician because he did not know what caused me to have blood in my urine. As I was about to leave the examination room, a nurse said that Dr. McClelland now wanted to get a X-Ray, also to be conducted in his office. An X-Ray tech took one X-Ray of my kidney/groin area. A few minutes later, she said it was “too dark” and needed to take it again. A few minutes after the second X-Ray, she again said it was too dark and blamed it on my being thin. After the 4th X-ray, I got up from the table and told her that the 4th one better be light enough because I did not want to be subjected to any more radiation. The nurse then escorted me into Dr. McClelland’s office. A few minutes later, Dr. McClelland came into the office and explained that the CAT Scan tech told him inaccurate information, and that the CAT Scan did indeed show several small (ranging in size from 1mm to 3.5mm) kidney stones. He walked me over to the CAT Scan machine and showed me. I then asked him if that meant I didn’t need the Cystoscopy, and he said “No, you didn’t. I won’t charge you for it” The X-Ray tech then walked in and I asked her how the 4th X-Ray looked, and she said that it turned out OK. Dr. McClelland then put the X-Ray in his light box and said that the kidney stones did not show up on the X-Ray. He explained that probably meant that they were not made of calcium and that Lithotripsy is not an option because you need to see them on a normal X-Ray for that procedure. He then said he wanted to schedule me for ureteroscopic stone removal surgery, and would I like to schedule that for before or after Christmas. I told him I would get back to him. I immediately made an appointment with another Urologist for a second opinion, which was on December 5th with Dr. Phillips. I picked up all of my files, including the 4th X-Ray, CAT Scan films, and the Radiologist’s report to bring with me to Dr. Phillips’ office. Before I met with the Dr. Phillips, he had me get another X-Ray. Only one was needed this time. Dr. Phillips put his X-Ray and the one from Dr. McClelland office side-by-side. Dr. Phillips was able to pick out my kidney stones on his X-Ray, but agreed that the X-Ray from McClelland’s office did not show any. As it turns out, the 4th X-Ray was too dark as well. Dr. Phillips advice was not to have surgery unless I’m in a profession that can’t afford to have the pain of a kidney stone suddenly appear (like a pilot), which I am not. He also wants me to collect urine for a 24-hour period to determine why I’m creating so many kidney stones at a relatively young age. At my follow-up appointment, we will also discuss Lithotripsy as an option. I was referred to Dr. McClelland by my primary care physician because I noticed blood in my urine. My first appointment with Dr. McClelland was on November 7. He explained that the most likely cause of the blood was kidney stones, or that … More

I've seen Dr. McClelland for years. I usually don't write reviews but get frustrated when I see incorrect and inconsistent bashing of people online. He is a fantastic Doctor who spends time and truly cares about his patients. Occasionally I have to wait to see him but it's because he spends as much time with his patients as we need. He's honest and really good at what he does. I recommend him as highly as I possibly can.
