I write this review with great disappointment and dismay. Just over twenty years ago I fractured cervical vertebrae in a car accident and was skillfully treated by Dr. Halperin. My accident brought me within millimeters of being paralyzed and I have been both grateful to and in awe of him for his care - until today. Today I traveled from Manhattan to Franklin, CT for an appointment with him regarding the arthritis that he predicted twenty years ago. I thought it was worth the time and expense to take Amtrak out to Connecticut because he would have my films from my injury and would be most capable of recommending a treatment plan. Instead, to my surprise, I was seen by a physician's assistant. I assumed when Tom came into the examining room that his role was similar to the resident fellow who examines my knee prior to my consultations with my orthopedist at HSS in NYC. I was surprised when Tom was not aware of my history with Dr. Halperin or which cervical vertebrae I had injured. He had clearly not prepared for the consultation. Even worse, when he looked at my x-rays he questioned if I had fractured vertebrae. Had he researched my case, he would have known that the arthritis revealed in the films today was located where the fractures happened and I had spent months in a minerva neck brace. When he described what he saw in the films taken today he used elementary terms as if I had never gone through treatment for fractured cervical vertebrae, I found it odd but assumed that Dr. Halperin would be meeting with me and Tom was just doing the prep work. My frustration built as it became apparent that Dr. Halperin would not be making an appearance. I was seething as I told Tom how disrespected and deceived I felt to be trifled with given my purpose in traveling out to Connecticut. He left the examining room without providing an explanation or an apology. If I had wanted to be seen by a physician's assistant, there are ample opportunities for this in Manhattan. Rather, I had traveled specifically to see the surgeon who had treated my original injury. When I made the appointment I carefully explained my reason for needing to see Dr. Halperin and indicated that I was traveling from Manhattan, even asked for advice about how to best . The scheduler was well-aware and scheduled my appointment on a day when he would be in the office, as opposed to the Monday after Easter, when I had hoped to combine time with family in Rhode Island with seeing him on the way back to New York. I do not know if the message never reached Dr. Halperin or if he did not care, but I feel disrespected and deceived, and question if I received the proper level of care today. I was later told by an employee at Orthopedic Partners that it is a regular practice for orthopedic patients at the Orthopedic Partners to be seen by a physician's assistant. No one explained this to me when I made the appointment. Had I known, I would not have traveled three hours in each direction on Amtrak, then taken an Uber another half hour from the train station, particularly not during a pandemic. I should also mention the added risk of riding on Amtrak and in Ubers with maskless passengers and drivers. It was particularly shocking that Tom's surgical mask was gaping on all sides, basically hanging off his head, and he thought nothing of sitting a foot away from me to review the x-rays with me. While the staff was masked, there wasn't a hepa filter in sight - unlike my NYC dermatologist who has two in a waiting room half the size and one in each examining room. Orthopedic Partners does not seem to have much regard for the safety of its staff or patients. I am disappointed and furious about having spent the time and money and put myself at risk only to receive substandard, casual care. Dr. Halperin is not the same committed, caring physician he was twenty years ago. After this experience, I could never recommend Dr. Halperin or Orthopedic Partners to anyone. As soon as Dr. Halperin determined that I did not need surgery, he dismissed any pain and discomfort I was having, told me to taper off the nerve blocker without giving a taper schedule, said to stay physically active without any parameters of what I should or shouldn't do with an L5 bulge, told me to take 2 ibuprofen to help with night pain then said to schedule a follow-up. For what I dont really know. Absolutely the best spine surgeon around. Doesn’t operate unless it’s the last resort for the patient. I have seen him since 1990 for a few different problems. He operated on my cervical spine on a Thursday and I was back to my old self within a week. Amazing.

I went into see Dr. Halperin hoping he could save my life. I’ve been chasing doctors for 16 years trying to get answers to my debilitating and crippling pain at the base of my spine and sacrum . I am unable to walk due to my horrific pain. I had to take an ambulance to see Dr. Halperin. This doctor was a complete loser, and a jack a#s, and insensitive tool. I begged him to save my life so I could walk again, and this fu#cking di#khead said everyone in this room has got bulged discs.. Yet I am in a ambulance stretcher. This fu#king piece of s#it couldn’t wait to get the fu#k out of the room and leave me helpless with no answers. He didn’t discuss anything or ask me any questions about my condition. All this idiot said was there’s nothing I can do to help you. Michael has got a sh#tty attitude and shouldn't be trusted. btw he owes me $600 for the ambulance ride, because he wasted my time. avoid his jerk

Wish I could give this Dr. a negative review. Unlike the previous rating, I feel that Dr. Halperin is not a person first, very poor bedside manner, and he has no idea how to speak to a patient. I left his office hurt an upset, there were a hundred different ways he could have told me what he did, instead he chose the rudest way possible to diagnose me, and then scheduled a follow up....for what?!?!? He already told me there was nothing he could do for me! Wish I could give this Dr. a negative review. I've suffered with 35 years of back issues. Prior to seeing Dr. Halperin I had disc removals in 2003/4 and an artificial disc (L5/S1) in 2005. These worked okay for about 9 years. In 2016 I was living in NJ and the doctor(s) there installed fusion hardware over the same L5/S1 area and made a true mess of things. They over-charged me far in excess of what insurance would cover and left me with a different type but just as bad a level of pain. I relocated to CT and was recommended by my boss to see Dr. Halperin. From the first meeting my outlook improved. Dr. Halperin is a person first and a doctor second. When he analyzed my records his empathy for my situation was obvious. I could even feel his disappointment in how others in his profession could have done such a poor job as the doctors in NJ. Dr. Halperin immediately earned my trust and confidence. His analysis showed the NJ doctors had poorly installed the fusion hardware and the screws were backing out causing considerable pain. Dr. Halperin went over options and the obvious solution was removal of the misplaced fusion hardware. Removal was step one. That got rid of the pain introduced by the NJ doctor's handiwork. I was now in the situation where Dr. Halperin could assess my back as a "clean slate" where he identified the true root cause as some disc degeneration. His concern and advice was not based on what would provide me the best quality of life possible - not what would be best for him (as the doctor's in NJ had obviously done). Spine Stimulator from Nevro. Wow!! I can't believe the difference. This device was implanted in a two phase process at Dr. Halperin and his colleagues surgical center. First off... what a relief to go to such a caring facility. Clean, new, friendly staff... felt more like a five star hotel and nothing like the hospitals with which I'd frequented in the past. The first phase implanted electrical leads in my upper back and provided me with an external battery. That combination essentially deadened the nerves to the pain signals from my lower back. Amazing. Strength immediately came back in my legs. A couple days later the battery was installed and I became a self-sustaining, rechargeable, fully mobile pain free happy person. It was a mini-miracle. Some slight surgical pain due to the implants but nothing compared to the 8/9 pain levels I had been experiencing. I just had my follow-up today... staples out... device working... pain level of 0/1 which was more some muscle soreness from surgery still. The greatest joy I got was relief of pain. The second greatest was the look of earnest joy on the part of Dr. Halperin and his PA. I have never felt such a connection of satisfaction from a physician. No ego.. no arrogance.. ... just happiness for his patient.. me! I know this has been a long post. I can not capture the confidence I have in this team of surgeons. Their humanity is unlike any I've experienced previously and I know this is not isolated. My mom just had hip replacement surgery by one of Dr. Halperin's colleagues and is equally impressed by their facility, professionalism and overall demeanor. Thank YOU all very much and God bless you for the good you bring to others. I've suffered with 35 years of back issues. I had consultations with neurosurgeons and other well known spine specialist before choosing Dr. Halprin. He explained that my cervical spine was better served by repairing each disc individually ( open door laminoplasty ) rather than a rod and fusing. Dr. Halprin was correct, my freedom and movement is incredible. No other doctor even mentioned this option to me. I believe this procedure is more extensive and less profitable for doctors but more beneficial for patients.

Dr Halperin makes his mistakes but never acknowledges his fault. I am tired of his denial, the only thing i will do now is file a complaint with the board. If after surgery you are worse , new symptoms developed and this Dr will never admit that his work may have caused the new issues. He will tell you that a new surgery is needed but blame it on pre-existing.He will cut you and refused to provide medications within 4 weeks. if i have to have a second surgery then he is to blame.
