Dr. Meredith Faggen

My wife past away from brain cancer in 2018. She had Glioblastoma(GBM). During her time with Dr. Faggen we always felt that she was not on top of patients with this type of cancer. We always felt that we were missing info. My wife had an unmethylated tumor. We were aware that their was a trial at the time for patients that had an unmethylated tumor. We were told that a small minority of patients have this kind of a tumor. We were told that we had to wait for the lab results to determine if she had this type of tumor. Meanwhile, Dr. Faggen had her start on Chemo before we had these results. Once you start Chemo you couldn't do the trial for an unmethylated tumor. We didn't know that. So my wife started Chemo on Sunday and on the next day Monday we found out she had an unmethylated tumor. Not knowing that if we started Chemo we couldn't do the trial my wife was very upset when she found this out. The Chemo shouldn't have been prescribed until we found out the lab results. This was on Dr. Faggen for not advising us about this. Another example was when she had an MRI in 2017 that showed there was no recurrence of a tumor. My wife wanted to reduce and get off of the steroid Dexamethasone. Dr. Faggen said she could start reducing this med. Did she give her a plan to start reducing. No! When her Neurosurgeon inquired to see if Dr. Faggen had given her a plan. We said no. Her neurosurgeon looked flustered and disappointed. This neurosurgeon put her on a plan to reduce and get off of the med. You have to reduce this drug very slowly. It affects your adrenal gland and if you reduce to quickly it could lead to being very tired and sleepy most of the day. Another instance was when my wife was looking to go on an immunotherapy trial. She asked Dr. Faggen if she needed to go back on the steroid. Dr. Faggen said no. That was incorrect. This was in essence part of the trial. There were other times we felt that we weren't getting good or correct information. Don't get me wrong, we liked Dr. Faggen. I also believe that she is caring and is looking out for the best outcomes in her patients. But it seemed to me that she wasn't up on caring for patients with this type of cancer. If you go on your website it looks like breast cancer is her specialty. Again, this is not personal. We liked Dr. Faggen. With this cancer very few people survive. I don't believe no matter what she was doing or on she would have survived this cancer. But these trials give hope. That's all you have and if your not given correct or incomplete info its upsetting.

Dr. Meredith Faggen practices at both DFCI@SSH and DF main campus. I have seen her at both sites. She is the most outstanding professional oncologist I have ever met. How can I say this? I have been an oncology nurse for over 30 years. Now, I am the patient. Dr. Faggen’s compassionate approach to cancer care is palpable. Her staff is wonderful, knowledgeable and helpful. She is patient, understanding and allows plenty of time for questions. Simply brilliant.

Dr. Faggen is amazing. She cares so much about her patients and takes the time to explain everything thoroughly. She has been my oncologist for 3 years and I am so lucky to have her.

dr. faggen is the most warm-hearted doctor. i ALWAYS feel as if i am the only patient when i am with her. she listens to what i have to say and makes me feel better about whatever question i seem to have.dr faggen always explained everything that was going to happen before it happened and she explained it in a way i could actually understand what she was telling me. it was a long journey but dr. faggen was there every step of the way to assist me in any way, shape or form. her medical expertise is above and beyond what i expected. i cannot stress enough how much i believe that, without her and her team, i may not have been able to become a SURVIVOR instead of a statistic!!! i truly believe that dr. faggen cares!
