Dr. Melerich in 1998Is did surgeryOn both hands and both elbows for duel carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve decompression. I had lost use of both arms and was in pain from the electric shock shooting down both arms. To this day I have total use and feeling in my arms and hands.

Posting for another person after this ordeal that I had to help sort out -- unacceptable staff behavior that has compromised patient care. Their account: I was injured on May 9th and went to Mercy Southwest and was treated for lacerations to three fingers on my right hand, with the middle finger having a severed tendon. Dr. Ren referred me to Dr. Malerich because of this, saying I would require urgent surgery to repair the tendon. I was unable to bend my finger at all, and I am unable to work, out on disability now, because I work as an EMT and cannot perform my job like this. I confirmed that the referral and documents were sent to Malerich's office on the 10th. I called Malerich's office to set an appointment, and they claimed they had no record of my referral and said to wait a day. I then called his office again on the 11th to set my consult with the doctor. I was told by the staff that he still had not received the referral or report. I called again on the 12th and was told they had nothing still. I then went Thursday the 13th to get the records from Mercy Southwest myself, and physically walked them into Malerich's office myself. I was told by the staff that I should expect a call the following day (Friday the 14th) or at the latest on Monday the 17th. I received no calls. So I called today, Tuesday the 18th and inquired about my consult. Now it has been 10 days since my tendon injury where time is of the essence. I was transferred to Malerich's MA who informed me that Malerich would not see me. Her reason for this is because I was being referred by Mercy Southwest and that "they have their own orthos" I can be referred to -- and that Malerich only sees patients referred by KMC. She claimed that it was because they have difficulty getting reports from other referring doctors, to which I replied I had already brought in all the paperwork myself and they had it on file -- and that I was supposed to have been called back by the previous Friday or Monday according to their staff. I did not catch this woman's name, but she continued to tell me that the reception people do not know what they are talking about and that she was Malerich's MA and would be the person to review documents. I informed her that Malerich is in my network with my insurance, and asked why it would matter who referred me. She continued to tell me that he wouldn't see me because I was referred from Mercy Southwest and that he was only in town two days per week and wouldn't even see me for a consult until mid-July. I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor to actually understand why I was being denied service or even an appointment, she claimed her manager was unavailable and took my information. I still was not given any actually valid reason for why I was being denied by Malerich and/or his office. I work in an ER. I have never heard of such a reason to deny a patient referral. And I honestly don't think it's even a legal thing to do. He accepts my insurance and is in network, he performs the procedure I need, and he was who I was referred to. Nothing she said made sense. And if it was about availability, I would have understood -- but it wasn't. At a minimum, if this was their policy or if they were booked that far out, their staff should and could have told me a week ago so I could find another doctor to address my issue. But as it was, they sat on my referral and made me hand deliver documents when they either had no intention of ever seeing me, or when their availability precluded Malerich from being an option. I would like someone to tell me why this happened and address this issue. I find this wholly unacceptable and may file a complaint with the medical board. This has compromised my health and prolonged my inability to work. I think Dr Malerich is an excellent physician. He diagnosed what was wrong, gave me cortisone injections (immediate relief), an MRI to confirm his diagnosis, and referred me to an excellent surgeon. I was impressed by his intelligence and knowledge of my condition. He is an honest doctor who doesn’t sugarcoat anything.

Dr Malerich operated on my carpal tunnel and I am delighted with the outcome. It has taken quite awhile to heal but Dr Malerich explained EVERYTHING to me so that there were no surprises. Even the painful time of 6 months. He scheduled hand therapy after surgery and it has been wonderful in allowing me to function again. Linda, the therapist, is so knowledge and she and Dr Malerich make quite a team for healing. I wish I could say more but out of characters. Best dr. in town

Dealing with the Dr. is Great! ...Scheduling appointments and calling in and getting prompt response is the problem. Staff is always friendly but everything seems to happen at a snail's pace, or your forgotten altogether (been there). Maybe that's just me, but that's not stopping me going back to the Dr. again!!! PS - I never had to schedule an urgent appointment!
