About Dr. Mathew Thomas Alexander
Reviews for Dr. Mathew Thomas Alexander
He literally is the worst dr ever He ruined my husbands life literally didn’t do anything proper or by protocol for his brain surgery now my husband lives like a little kid
In April 8, 2020 (day of surgery) He drop me as a client after one visit when my Brain surgery was one, when caused me too lay up in bed for a year. I suffered from lose of chemicals that our body needs to work right, i lost the ability to walk and today in 2023 I have fought my way back from near death.
If you come to this guy, I hope you have a completely obvious condition that can be seen immediately. I have Chiari and pretty sure occult tethered cord as well. I fell hitting my neck. I informed him of this via patient portal and was told to keep my regular appointment 6 months out. This guy has absolutely no consideration, does not listen, and has no empathy. I have seen 7 neurosurgeons before him and he is by far the WORST one I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. So if you have a condition that doesn't always show up on imaging or isn't life threateningly severe, find someone else. My worst experience ever.
This guy I'm not going to call him a doctor he ruined my husband for life he did a phony cervical fusion on his neck now he walks with a walker. Stay away please. Protect your love ones just to make money he ruined my life.
Be very careful with this guy he's got lots of complaints .he did a phony fusion on my neck.now I have trouble walking.his practice should be investigated. I feel for the people he injured is all about the money not a good doctor I reported him to the Texas board of doctors.if your love one ends at spohn hospital like I did don't let this sob near your love one. I arrived to my appointment early and have been here for 2 1/2 hours and still haven’t seen the doctor. Once the doctor did come in he was great and got right down to things and a plan of care.
Waiting to be seen at this office is RIDICULOUS! Appointment was at 5: 00pm and we didn’t get out till 11:00pm. I can’t believe they make the patients that have had back surgery wait so long!
This Dr. Matthew Alexander he literally butchered my 70 year old mother. She wasn’t even his patient and he recommended surgery while in the hospital for back pain. Her incision was at least 12 inches if not longer. He went in for surgery with no idea of her medical history. She SUFFERED sooooo much it would bring any person with a heart to tears. This man has no heart. When I confronted him as to why he would recommend this spinal reconstruction surgery he merely said “if I knew this would have happened I would have reconsidered.” Yet he did not bother allowing her to prep for such a big surgery nor did he care to ask of her medical history. She died less than 3 months after the surgery due to sepsis. She lost her mind at then end and was left 10x worse off than before. It was so sad for her 2 sons and her only daughter to see her decline and suffering. This man is dangerous and has actually caused death on patients as well as unnecessary suffering. My own Dr. Told me one of her patients had passed away after he did surgery on her. BEWARE of Dr. Alexander please. He is only in for the $$$$$$$. Should’ve read a review before I did a surgery now I’m all messed up
My mother fractured her C1 and C2 vertebrae a couple of years back. After living in a brace for 18 months, her neck hadn't healed properly. Her regular doctor said, Oh well, she's too old, tough break. After another fall, she was seen by Dr Alexander who thought he could do something for her. We just wrapped up our two year post spinal fusion surgery visit. We tried a different solution prior to surgery - Dr Alexander was straight with us about the likelihood of that solution not working, but we needed to try it first, due to ethical guidelines. We are very pleased with the result, not only would we go to him again, but I'd recommend him to everyone I care about - he's the kind of doctor that other doctors want to be. PS: when he was running late due to complications in surgery, he had the office get catering from Bill Millers for the patients waiting.
Thanks to Dr. Alexander and his staff, I can walk again. I suffer from spinal stenosis, myelitis, disc degenerative disease and sciatica nerve pain just to name a few. I have had seven previous back surgeries in Houston before moving to Corpus Christi in 2019. I was 90% paralyzed from the waist down and was suffering from a massive bacterial infection. Dr. Alexander immediately admitted me into the hospital and three days later performed his first surgery to remove all prior hardware to tackle the bacterial infection. Eight months later Dr. Alexander performed his second surgery, a laminectomy, to help relieve spinal cord pressure due to my spinal stenosis. Last December, Dr. Alexander performed his third surgery, a TLIF, to help alleviate spinal cord pressure due to my myelitis. Thanks to Dr. Alexander’s persistence, surgical skills and experience along with a lot of physical therapy, I can walk again! Dr. Alexander and his staff have always treated me with excellent care.
I really don't understand the negative comments, I'm a winter Texan and had no idea who to turn to and then I found Dr Alexander. He's a very kind person and answered every question and called the local rep for info while I was in the office. I got in to see him 2 days after I called and I feel very confideefnt that he will fix my problem. Absolutely everyone in the office was kind from the receptionist to the one who scheduled my surgery. I didn't get my paperwork finished before I was in the office. Dr Alexander has proven to be a knowledgeable & extremely skillful surgeon in the field of numerology but I understand why some reviews aren’t quite so favorable. My daughter brought me for my first visit & my appointment was at 7:30pm we didn’t see him until 11:45pm & didn’t leave the office until close to 1am the next morning & since we live 2 hrs away we didn’t make it home till almost 3am. My daughter was understandably upset because not only was the reception chairs uncomfortable but the wait was a nightmare. I was in tears by the time we pulled into our driveway cause I was in so much pain. All of what I just wrote is true but also he explained what I needed done to my entire lower lumbar in detail. He performed my surgery in April 2021 & while I’m not where I want to be yet I’ll get there with his help. My point is give him a chance & as for me I was not disappointed but yet again this is only my opinion & my review…thanks y’all!! I sincerely wish I would have read reviews before I came. I blindly accepted that my pcp referred them and knew better than I The multiple complaints about excessive wait times in very uncomfortable offices is true. It is beyond me why a doctor who specializes in this field would have such awful furniture for his patients to sit for hours in. I am at 3 hours so far and will be requesting what notes they have on me and leaving in 20 minutes. I had to insist on waiting in my vehicle just to get some comfort and relieve back pressure. I would highly recommend Dr. Alexander. First of all the staff was really friendly. Secondly, when Dr Alexander came in to meet and talk to us, he was very friendly and explained everything clearly to us. He made me feel comfortable and I knew then that I could trust him. He was very positive about my procedure. After my surgery and even up til now , not once have I needed any kind of pain medicine. I am so happy to have my life back to normal and pain free. I am truly blessed. Thank you Dr. Alexander.
They should hand out ear tags and use cattle prods. Fast paced assembly line in and out. My patient history was ignored, interrupted and mistake-ridden. Dr. Alexander made me feel like I wasted his time with my existence. Blatantly ignored my history and reason for visit.... Came in with a big fake smile, pat on the head and showed me out the door after the perfunctory stress test. Made a few hundred bucks and washed his hands of me.. Horrid patient care. Listened to him give the same wrap up to the patient in the next room, before he came and dismissed me. What a joke. Well-rehearsed assembly line BS. Whataburger gives better personalized service. Appointments take too long to get served more than an hour
Idk why my PCP suggested this place i've been waiting here for over 2 hours now its ridiculous. Asked the nurse up front no response twice. Then this time she replied annoyed telling me the doctor went to the hospital and she will track hom down for me....i mean what...?? 2 hours just to look over my xray results... I articulated the fact that I wanted to talk to Doctor Alexander for my follow-up up visits after having two extremely invasive spine surgeries over a 4mo period. I was assured by his staff when I made my follow-up appointment I would have each and every question answered by Doctor Alexander himself and he would be the one who would be seeing me. This was never once true. The 5 follow-up up visits from 2 surgeries were with either his PA or a nurse. They in no way shape or form answered my questions in full. What is more after having a C3-C6 neck fusion I was made to wait 2.5 hours painfully in a office causing great unnecessary pain. For the same staff who is supposed to care for your highly invasive spine surgery to not care or want to care they are unnecessarily inducing tremendous amounts of pain on a patient who is 2 weeks post-op is not acceptable. If they are not going to be available when they request you to be available for them simply schedule a proper time to ask the fragile patient to come in and not stick them in a room and make them painfully wait for hours on end. Every single visits at Doctor Alexander's office was no less than 3 hours! Not acceptable. Secondly his staff incorrectly billed for a brace after my lumbar fusion and continues to pretend they did not submit the bill delinquent. They also continue to pretend they did not even submit the bill at all when clearly at the bottom of the bill it has Mathew Alexander as the physician who ordered the bill. They now are trying to pass that billing mistake onto me because they can not get paid for something that was not authorized after the surgery was performed. Their mistake is not my problem but they continue to try to game me and get me to pay for a $1400.00 back brace out of pocket. I have confirmed by my insurance company in fact the ordering Doctor was in fact Dr Alexander, and in fact they attempted to bill for that brace after the surgery was performed, therfore making a huge billing mistake on their end. They inturn are trying to pretend that is somehow my responsibility, which it in no way shape or form is. My insurance and the billing company who has called Dr Alexander's staff on numerous occasions have both concured his staff is highly unprofessional and rude on the phone, which I have also fully experienced and also concur to be true. After two surgeries. And never once being able to see or talk to Doctor Alexander after the actual surgeries were finished in the hospital I would not recommend using him based on the fact that his staff will continually fail you on all fronts, period. As far as the surgeries... My lumbar is fragile and its so, so. My cervical fusion is horrible. I can not lay down and sleep with out extreme pain. I get less than 4 hours of sleep a night 16 mo later. Driving over 1.5 hours causes extreme pain and a migraine. Any physical activity at all causes extreme pain. It was not a improvement to my life at all. I would not suggest a cervical fusion to anyone thinking about it. At the very least get a second opinion that is not associated with Doctor Alexander's staff in any way. The doctor and his staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Spohn hospital is new and clean with great personnel. I was at ease and felt in great hands throughout my stay.
The appointment hours are late there but it's well worth it. The staff and doctors are very nice and considerate, and I'm glad that they explain everything in English not in doctors terms. Thank you Mr. Alexander for your care.
Terrible office management. We waited 4 hours and finally decided to leave. We decided that this poor attitude and lack of respect towards patients would most definitely reflect their attitude towards surgery. I know my time is not nearly as valuable as some but that was 4 hours lost for good.
I just went in for my 18 month checkup. Before the surgery I could barley walk and now I am up to a mile a day. My sciatic nerve issues have not returned and the pain is at a level that I can treat it with over counter drugs. This is an awesome result. Great Surgeon, great staff. I would recommend Dr. Alexander to anyone who wants or needs results.

i am neurologist and I work closely with Dr. Alexander and he doing amazing work. He even took care of my family member and he did well. 5 stars. South Texas is lucky to have him.
Dr. Alexander takes a lot of time with his patients, and he is very observant. He noticed I had problems with movement of my arm -- right it's not in his area of brain and spine, but he then asked about it and said he thought it was a torn rotator cuff -- MRI proved him correct and have a referral for a shoulder guy. But it was Dr Alexander's care for his patients that got that referal and diagnosis. Dr. Alexander takes a lot of time with his patients, and he is very observant. i had severe spinal cord.compression and was wheelchair bound. After surgery I can walk again
I cannot explain just how grateful I am to Dr. Alexander. I suffered for years with excruciating pain on my lower back down my right leg. I had not slept on my own bed in at least 2 years. I handed my life over to him and he has given it back to me 99% better than it was before. I had my surgery March of this year and I can honeslty say that I do not feel any of the pain I had before. He has given me my life back to enjoy with my family once again. I highly recommend him.
In 2010, my husband fell 12’ through a ceiling, landing on his head on a concrete floor. His neck was broken in 4 places, as well as other life-threatening injuries. Dr. Matthew Alexander performed life-saving neurosurgery, and after 59 days in 3 hospitals, he made a miraculous recovery. Five months later, Dr. Alexander removed a tumor at the junction of C1-C2, and 7 months after that, he removed another tumor from around his brain stem, in an extremely difficult place to operate. Nine months later, he required lower back surgery -- his 4th neurosurgery within 2 years, performed by Dr. Alexander. In 2016, I had a spinal cord injury, and Dr. Alexander successfully performed an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C4-C7. Dr. Alexander is an experienced, super-dedicated neurosurgeon, and works late/long hours to accommodate EVERYONE! .We would NEVER consider going to anyone else. He saved our quality of life multiple times, and we will be forever grateful!
I am a 68 yr old female. Doctor Alexander has saved my life. I was in a wheelchair this time last year. He performed my surgery and cleaned out a deadly spinal infection, I was in absolute agony when he saved me. There are not enough words to express the kindness brains and talent this man has been Blessed with. There is no other Doctor better than him. I am walking, infection free, and just about pain free. The office and staff are wonderful and you can expect a wait. All good things are worth waiting for. God Bless this man.
Dr. Alexander has performed surgery for spinal compression fractures on my 92 year old sister. The fractures cause excruciating pain and Dr. Alexander has alleviated the pain. He is very caring and takes the time to show and explain the procedures that will be done. You might have to wait, but the wait is worth it if you will get relieve from pain.
He's a very good doctor. He takes his time in explaining the patient's problems.

What kind of doctors office sees patients at 11:00pm at night and then can’t find MRI results.. If he’s that busy maybe he shouldn’t be taking anymore patients.
Dr Alexander performed back surgery on my friend and paralyzed her. Do not go to him for your back surgery. Go to dr. Michelle he is great
He crippled my wife for the rest of her life. Did a phony spinal fusion that didn't take. Left a stimulator in her with no information on what model it is or the serial number. Don't go to this phony doctor, he's a scammer or a complete sociopath.

Lots of crazy reviews posted here, but would just like to share our experience... Initially we read some reviews and were reluctant about going to see Dr. Alexander only because we heard about the terrible wait times. To our surprise we had an appointment shortly after being referred by our primary physician and they scheduled my wife for surgery in the same week! We did have a long office wait, but when seen by the Dr. and or his staff we never felt rushed and they always took great care to make sure we understood our options and the procedure my wife chose to have. The place is clean, staff professional, and it's one of the few places downtown where there is never an issue parking. Surgery went well and were hoping my wife will be back to 100% in time. Superior neurosurgeon. Had a great surgical experience and recovery was quick. This was the second surgery in my neck. The previous was in 1997 where three disks were removed. I was suffering from extreme headaches. Now I am free of the headaches caused from my neck.
I had lower back surgery with Dr Alexander in early 2018. He is a very good and thorough surgeon. Like he told me he can’t take all my pain away. He did alleviate the pain. He always does his best to tend to my back pain. I would recommend him to anyone that needs back surgery. N Bueno
After 4 hours I was 4th in line then the staff said it was best to call in at the time of your appointment, then they will call me back 30 minutes before the doctor can see me, they will call me back in Ingleside to come back and see Dr Alexander - I quickly saw one of his associates and when he showed me my x-ray I couldn't see the fracture - left and never went back to him Other patients said he sometimes orders pizza at 8pm for those still waiting
When I began losing feeling in my fingers, Dr. Alexander and his team quickly (and confidently) diagnosed, communicated, and arranged procedure on neck vertebrae to "fix." His knowledge, skills, and process is so good that this is practically an in-patient evolution. Although wait times in lobby and exam room may vary, follow-up appointments are stress free with an attentive staff and scheduling (office open until 7pm). You are likely reading this and researching this Doctor due to a referral - I can confidently say that you will be in good hands if fortune finds you with an option to have Dr. Alexander and his team at South Texas Brain & Spine review your case.
what a great doctor i had a blood hemorrhage in my left side of my head the blood was pushing on my brain giving me severe pain i went to two hospitals they did CAT scans and sent me home with pain meds the pain only got worse after a week of such bad pain i went to see dr alexander he put me in the hospital the same day and did surgery to remove the blood and the pain was gone six months later new CAT scan and all blood is gone back to normal again thank you dr alexander
I highly recommend Dr. Mathew Alexander to everyone. He did an excellent job on my surgery. I am completely pain free! He is an amazing and very caring doctor!
Dr. Alexander diagnosed and very carefully resected my husband's brain tumor which was very near the motor skills area of the brain. He took time to carefully explain everything so that we could understand it fully. He so successfully removed it that, even though it was aggressive, after nine months it has not returned We thank both God and Dr. Alexander.
In August, 2018, Dr. Mathew Alexander gave my life back to me for the second time since I have been a patient of his. Pain in my lower back kept me from doing things like making my bed, etc. It has been about seven months since the surgery, and I am now able to do almost anything I want or need to do. Dr. Alexander and his staff will always have my gratitude. He is my hero.
Can't say enough Good about Dr. Alexander. Professional. Informative. Kind. Caring. It was a Privilege before and After surgery. He explained what was happening thur surgery, time it would take, how I could feel, and the care and I would need to recovery. You could not choose anyone more in your Corner. Linda Mullen
Doctor Alexander has operated on my back three different times for different problems non related to the previous. Each time I have come out doing very well and pain free after the healing process. I would strongly recommend Dr. Alexander to anyone in need of help with your back issue. He is honest, caring and a great surgeon with great help and staff.
Dr. Alexander is an excellent surgeon & caring Doctor. He has cared for me over the years & I totally trust him as he has operated on my neck & back.
The procedure was fast and precise. Dr.Alexander would check up on us multiple times to make sure we were comfortable and was very courteous. We were put at ease by his professionalism and genuine kindness and there have been no complications. Recovery has been fast and we couldn't be happier!
Great Doctor. Great surgical results for my herniated disc. a nice improvement would be the waiting room times and scheduling.
Dr. Alexander is a very good surgeon who cares very much about his patients. He is in the hospital late at night checking up on them after he operates. My only problem with the good doctor is that he stacks up his patients in his waiting room and it is not unusual to wait to be seen by him for 3 hours or so. This is not acceptable. He needs to fix that problem.
Dr. Alexandra is a very dedicated doctor. I had surgery in June 2018. He was there every night I was in the hospital. It is now August of 2018 went to see him and I am doing so well he released me of my brace, walker and therapy. I will be having a different surgery in about a year. I have know worries about him I trust in him.
Dr. Alexander informed me on the risk of open-back surgery. Surgery was done on March 20, 2018. The recovery was long, painful, and discouraging, but I was determined to get well. I did everything Dr. Alexander said I should do. The hard part was losing over 30 pounds of weight. Many patients give doctors bad ratings because they don't do what is required for recovery. Dr. Mathew Alexander gave me a much improved quality of life and I am doing well. I am forever grateful to Dr. Alexander.
The surgery went very well! Thank you for doing a great job Dr. Alexander!

My mom had surgery by Dr Anderson. She has been in horrific pain and efforts to get help from the doctor is impossible. The pain has been so bad that she could not sleep, eat or stand. Staff at the Dr. office told her that she had the only pain med that the doctor perscribed and she would have to wait a week for her follow up. No one should have to experience such pain. Good: Friendly Staff and Dr. Alexander does take plenty of time to review options and xray/mri. He is very nice and knowledgeable. Bad: 4 hour wait to see the doctor. This sucks when you have a baby and need to breast feed. Rooms are clean with TVs I assume for the long wait. His PA contradicted what the doctor said. The doctor gave me a long list of issues and said surgery would be best bet but pain management would be a "temp fix" and that he does surgeries like what I needed every Friday - no big deal. I went to another neurosurgeon a few days later for a second opinion and they said that my diagnosis was "exaggerated" that my condition was NO where close to needing surgery. I had a feeling that was the case. Turns out Dr. Alexander is the busiest surgeon in corpus and makes the hospital a pretty coin with all the surgeries. There is a wait, so what. Dr. Alexander knows what he is doing, and a lot of issues people have concern waiting (impatience) and recovery... Take care of your body and your body will take care of you. There is no magic fix and then 20 mins later you are fine. Most (if not all) spine surgeries, fusions, etc take 6 months to a year for a NEW NORMAL. Most people do not realize/accept/hear when a doctor tells them that. Reality is that it takes time to heal and then find your own new normal... Don't blame a doctor because you put stress on their work before it healed completely. Having my fusion in 3 days and hoping I have my life and help planned appropriately for long enough to let the healing process take over and his work set right. There is a wait, so what. Dr Alexander performed a laminectomy inter body fusion on me on 12 /26/2017,Prior to this surgery I had suffered great deal of pin in my lower back for more then 15yrs. After the surgery on my L-3;L-4;and L-5, I no longer suffer from pain and no longer need pain medications, or injections. I would highly recommend Dr. Mathew to everyone needing a Neurosurgeon.
When deciding to finally have back surgery, Dr. Alexander conducted a thorough examination, ordered the necessary tests and then we sat down to discuss my options. He presented visual scans of x-rays, a skeletal model of the human spine and proceeded to explain in detail the surgical procedure. I was very happy and comfortable in proceeding with the surgery.

Dr. Alexander was very thorough when explaining the procedures for surgery to me. I am very happy that I no longer have the pain that has been with me for months. The surgery went very well and I recuperated quickly by following his instructions. I would go back to him if I ever needed any other back surgery. He was Outstanding.
Our family has been cared for by Dr. Alexander since 2010. He is highly intelligent, humble, and compassionate. Our 20 year old son was diagnosed with a rare birth defect that causes a sever spinal cord injury. He was unable to stand or much less walk. His prognosis was extremely dim - never to walk again. Dr. Alexander stayed positive and preformed three tough surgeries, beautifully done. In 2011 our son took his first steps and has been walking without aids to the present day! God Bless Him!
I had to have emergency surgery for some ruptured discs. Two titanium rods are now held in place by 8 screws into my spine. It seems like a pretty significant surgery. I know my son has had similar surgery. But, I've had NO pain. My son is so jealous. Dr. Alexander was there, he explained things to my wife when I was out of it, and he's been wonderfully supportive all during the post-op process. It's now been 8 months since the accident and operation. I'm doing well.
I had a back surgery performed by Dr: Alexander, highly recommended to me by a Nurse Practioner who was his patient. She explained that she injured her neck while lifting a patient. I immediately scheduled an appointmennt with Dr. Alexander. My spine was hurting so bad that I was barely able to walk. Dr. Alexander said that he would have me physically active again. The surgery went extremely well. I was able to return to work and physical activities. I highly recommend Dr. Alexander.
