Dr. Mary K Karkow

Dr Mary Karkow has done more for my chronic TMJD than several other dentists and providers who claimed to be experts in the field. She is skilled, kind, has integrity and uses proven tecniques to help her patients. I wholeheartedly recommend her. You will be glad you are her patient.

Terrible service & patient care. My girlfriend was just 10 minutes late to her appointment because of car troubles and after waiting for an appointment for 3 months for her messed-up jaw, they refused to see her or make another appointment. I saw Dr. Karkow as a late teen and had a good experience. I had tmj and bite issues. When I finished my treatment as a teen, I was trying to get jaw surgery approved and she advised me at the end of my treatment she would “write a letter of documentation” to prove to the insurance company that my jaw issues and tmj were related. I never proceeded with the jaw surgery. In my mid 30s, I had a fall and hurt my jaw even more. My splint broke and didn’t fit anymore. By this time, Dr. Karkow was no longer working in my home area and now about an hour drive away. Feeling that I was once a patient of hers, I wanted to revisit getting a new splint and see if she could provide a referral for my insurance to prove my tmj issue was still an issue and could use that in an appeal for my current insurance to approve jaw surgery. During my appointment, she was rude and unprofessional. Making me feel that it was unacceptable that I even ask for a referral about my condition. The way she talked to me made me feel like I was way out of line for even asking. I was asking for a new splint and a referral; which she had no interest in doing either. Everything was fine until I said my splint didn’t fit correctly and even cracked in two places. She snapped on me. She filed the splint down and “stood behind the fit of the splint.” She then scolded me for not wearing the splint more. Wanting any relief from the pain I tried the splint again and ended up with a chipped tooth that required a root canal and a crown. The amount of money I am out is one thing but the pain that she caused to get worse, along with addition issues with my teeth is another. It is unfortunate that a Dr feels the need to blame the patient for their improper care. Read the other reviews, I wish I had. This doctor has a horrible attitude. The way she treats her patients is disgusting. She does not want to help you but she will sure try to scam you out of as much money as she can. Don't waste your time going here.

Mary Karkow is a disrespectful bully! She tries to intimidate all her patients by scolding and criticizing them very angrily. I should have listened to the other bad reviews. She belittled me and berated me just like she did to the other reviewers! I agree with the other review that says she is a terrible person inside and out.

Thorough, knowledgeable, truly cares about providing relief from pain. Dr Karkow is a class act and I recommend her without hesitation.

Dr Karkow has a been a blessing for me to meet. I was referred years ago but finally got to the point of really needing help. I have honestly never met anyone who takes as much time as she does to get to understand a patient, and she makes sure her patient understands their individual situation. Terrible person inside and out

I called to schedule an initial appointment for my TMJ issues, which had been acting up recently. The receptionist asked if I had been treated for TMJ before, and I told her that I had in the past. Then she said in an extremely snobby, disrespectful tone, ‘We don’t accept patients who have seen another doctor for this in the past.’ That disrespectful receptionist should have been fired! I've never rated anything before but calling to schedule was the worst experience ever. If this represents their patient care I'd expect a horrible experience. I went to schedule and explained I lost my previous retainer. They jumped down my throat accusing me of seeing some other provider when I haven't seen anyone for TMJ in 15 years. I'm pretty sure the provider I saw for my retainer wasn't the one they were freaking out over because at one point when I couldn't remember the providers name because it was 15 years ago they mentioned mayfair Rd and the provider I saw 15 years ago was not off mayfair road. Mary Karkow and her team are the most compassionate people I have ever worked with. They GENUINELY want to HELP PEOPLE! From the first day I stepped foot into their office I knew my TMJ pain would be solved here. HELPING PEOPLE is their MAIN FOCUS, especially during this crazy year of 2020. They give clear instructions on how to over come TMJ all while caring about you as a human being and what ever life obstacles you have going on. Dr. Karkow has been nothing but professional and extremely knowledgeable with a warm personality. My daughter and I have been under her care for years, and Dr. Karkow treated our pain very effectively. She referred me to the first neurologist who could treat my migraines as well. I have my life back largely because of Dr. Karkow's care. I don't know what to make of some of the other reviews. Dr. Karkow is outstanding and truly cares for her patients. She resolved my TMJ issue after several years of failed attempts seeing different specialists. Office staff is always friendly and helpful.

I wish I could give Dr. Karkow no stars. She provided me with a TMJ splint (which appears to be the only treatment she provides all of her patients). When it was unsuccessful, she had no other recommendations besides muscle relaxers and to continue wearing the splint. Poor bedside manners and very rude when she runs out of medical treatment options. Other website reviews indicated Dr. Karkow’s practice was unprofessional, rude, and unknowledgeable, which are similar to my experience as well. Would not recommend this provider to anyone! Save yourself energy, time, and money and find a different doctor who will actually help you.

If I could rate a zero I would. Mary Karkow is unprofessional and cost us time and money when caring for my daughter. She misdiagnosed, did not take x-rays, and belittled us in the appointments. We are FINALLY on track but cannot express strongly enough to find an alternative to Mary Karkow.

I am very sad to say after a year of appointments and over $1,000, out of pocket, my daughter still suffers from tmj pain and it has gotten worse under the care of Mary Karkow. I wish i would have read the other reviews before we went to see her. A year of unnecessary pain, and increased pain. Stay away. This is not a review about Dr. Mary but what I was told when I called to make and appointment. I was told by my dentist that I had severe TMJ and misaligned teeth and jaw. Which of course I already knew because of the horrific pain I have been experiencing. My dentist explained that I needed to see a TMJ specialist as soon as possible. So I called Dr. Mary's clinic knowing my Medicare insurance wouldn't cover it. They told me flat out on the phone that wouldn't see me even if I paid out of pocket. They told me that if they got audited they could get into trouble by Medicare? So I'm royally screwed by the system. Living in this fine Country of ours with the wrong kind of insurance and even though I offered to pay out of pocket they still won't treat me! So what's a girl to do? Live in pain I guess. Sorry, just had to vent here. I feel like a third class citizen. I just received bad news from my dentist and I was trying to call a clinic that I thought would help me. I was wrong. Do not waste your time with Dr. Karkow she is very unprofessional and lacks any bedside manners. I was charged $222 for a 10 minute visit of her berating me. I had to start all over with a new TMJ doctor and know feel a 100% better. I find it interesting that I already posted a review and it was removed. If I can save anyone from the financial and emotional pain of this woman this review was worth. She is a single doctor practice so she is not accountable to anyone else. I have seen her twice now and she is so far the ONLY doctor that has taken my pain seriously. My TMJ pain came on suddenly and I now have a consult with a Rheumatologist all thanks to Dr Karkow!! Thank you! Thank you!!

I was treated by Mary a few years back in Racine for TMJ pain and had a wonderful experience. She was so kind and genuinely interested and invested in me as a person and not just a patient. Her treatment plan worked wonderfully. I’m really shocked at these other reviews - total opposite of my experience with her. My friend was complaining of TMJ pain and I said she had to see her. That’s why we looked her up and I felt compelled to share my experience in fair balance. Please meet her for yourself and decide if she is a fit for you. There’s always two sides to every story. My father died and we missed a appointment with the funeral arrangements and we were given the wrong address and looked for 4 hrs looking for the right place!! They would not re-book her appointment. Unfortunetly I am a patient of this woman because my insurance wouldn’t cover anyone else and I can’t afford the expenses out of pocket. From the moment I met her I could tell I wasn’t going to like her. She was rude and degratting. She continually talked unprofessionally about my regular dentist who is also a TMJ specialist (with more/and current training) that her. (I had seen my regular dentist for TMJ, however medical insurance wouldn’t cover her) I dread my follow up visits because I would have to see this awful woman. I then found out that SHE WROTE A LETTER TO MY MY REGULAR DENTIST telling her that she shouldn’t practice and that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. My mother saw Dr. Krakow first time visit three years ago and went fine. A year ago went for follow up visit and when she expressed some pain she was told she needed psychological help. Recently she visited this dentist. Because again she was having pain issues this dentist proceeded to be very rude. She wouldn't even try to understand if my mothers pain she was experiencing warranted any further treatment by her. My mother was put on an anti depressant because of her pain, Dr. Krakow said she was offended because my mother went to her primary recently to get some relief from depression caused by pain of tmj and didn't seek mental help from a year previous. My mother tried to explain that she wasn't depressed a year ago and had no reason to seek psychological help. Dr. Krakow told my mother she was in her office long enough, she had other patients to see, and that my mother needed to leave even though my mother wanted a few moments to compose herself. It was the worst experience I've ever had with a doctor.

Horrible experience. Continually told me and my Mother that because I was "not compliant" that there was "nothing more she could do for me." She is a strong believer in chiropractic medicine, which is fine, but I simply am not. I told that I did not want to see a Chiropractor, and asked for a physical therapist. This lead to the "not compliant' issue. She was very upset that my busy lifestyle (full-time student, two part-time jobs, and one internship position) made it difficult for me to schedule appointments. She also continually asked about, and make assumptions about health issues that did not have anything to do with my jaw. Horrible experience. This is a great practice! I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Mary Karkow and her staff. After many months of experiencing a very painful TMJ disorder, I feel very fortunate to have been referred to Dr. Karkow. She is exceptionally knowledgeable, upbeat and very friendly. I have been seeing Dr. Karkow almost 20 years. She is one of very few Dr.'s I trust with my life and care. She is very informative and patients learn a lot from her care. She is hands down the best TMJ specialist out there!

I highly recommend Dr. Karkow. She was very thorough and actually confirmed that my daughter did not have TMJ. Do not hesitate to get a proper diagnosis. She can be trusted 100 percent!

Dr. Karkow is great! She helped me kindly and wisely with a jaw problem that I had. She is one who truly cares and takes an interest in her patients and is always so pleasant, easy to talk to, and listens well. I highly recommend her as a TMJ specialist.

Very friendly feels like it's your best friend

She is a wonderful doctor and one of the kindest people I've ever met. She knows her stuff and I feel so comfortable with her and I trust her completely. Everyone in her office is kind and wonderful.
