I have been a patient for several years and as a young woman with a complicated history Dr Mark and his team have thought outside with box and has made me an active part of my care and treatments. I wish there were more doctors and staff. Thank you for all that you do!

I've seen many doctors, with different areas of expertise/specialties. And while I'm still a new patient of Dr. Matsunaga, I will say he's the first doctor that I've spoken with that genuinely seems to care that I'm in a lot of pain. He seems very motivated to get to the root cause of my issues, and that's all you can really ask from a doctor! (To help!)

I came from rehab and was here for 8 years without one issue, no dirty UA's no excuses for needing more pills, I paid over 80K for 8 years and was given hundreds and hundreds of pills each month. I had a serious surgery and that doctor sent a bunch of meds over to Walmart, one of them was 15 pain pills, I laughed and threw them in the trash, well, it seems I could leave from my appointment with this place without even one pill , cold turkey, because I had been given this 15 pills and he didn't know about it for 1o days. Every time you see this doctor he is going to humiliate you, don't trust this person or hill pill mill. I guess he bought the wrong career in college because there is an opioid epidemic in this country and he is stuck with constant fear of the DEA, so he will always decrease you meds, less and less, and any little infraction will get you the most humiliating visit you've ever had in your life. Comprehensive Pain Center is working on giving me my life back. I have had back pain since 2007. I have been to 5 different pain clinics over the years with no success in relieving my pain. One place put me through over 20 injections in less than a year. I now have so many problems with my back that most doctors tell me "surgery will not help me and there's too big a chance that it will make me worse". Comprehensive Pain is the first place that has actually listened to me when I described my pain. Instead of telling me what they were going to do, Dr. Mark Matsunaga sat with me and asked what I wanted and together we set a plan in action. Dr. Mark and Gabrielle are the greatest. Finding the right medications to relieve my pain has taken a little time but has definitely been worth it. Any injections have been at my request and not theirs. Everyone that works at Comprehensive Pain makes you feel like family. They are so caring and easy to talk to. I always leave with a smile on my face. They have a way of making you feel good about yourself. Thanks to everyone at Comprehensive Pain I can see a better future. Comprehensive Pain Center is working on giving me my life back. In the period from 1976 through 1985, I had 2 major surgeries in my lower back. The severe pain after the surgeries has been nearly the same as the pain before the surgeries. I recently met Dr. Matsunaga who immediately and accurately assessed the problems causing causing the severe pain, and immediately took action to significantly reduce the pain. He is an excellent listener, followed with prompt actions taken. He maintains the fine balance of an outstanding medical professional while providing a comfortable doctor-patient relationship. He has restored me to a greater quality of life within a 3 week period of time. In the period from 1976 through 1985, I had 2 major surgeries in my lower back. I suffered from chronic migraines for 15 years during which time I received consistent care from a neurologist and thoroughly tried EVERY preventative medication as well as a gluten-free diet, physical therapy, Botox, the Cefaly migraine gadget etc. Nothing helped to prevent my migraines, and while I received some relief from various medications, I was suffering greatly on an almost daily basis. It was terrible! A friend recommended Dr. Matsunaga as he helped her with chronic back pain. I am BEYOND thrilled that I followed up on my friend's recommendation. Dr. Matsunaga and Gabrielle Kallmeyer as well as the entire CPC staff have been instrumental in helping me find relief from migraine pain. I am suffering SIGNIFICANTLY less with their help and all the things they recommend for my "toolbox." Dr. Matsunaga and Gabrielle are always up to date on the newest migraine prevention medications and tools and are quick to suggest different treatments; they work wonderfully with my neurologist whom I continue to see. They are always kind, compassionate and professional and were quickly attentive when I had a major flare-up in the recent past. During the COVID19 pandemic and quarantine, the entire CPC team handled my care seamlessly for which I could not be more grateful. I cannot recommend the CPC team enough! Please make an appointment asap if you're suffering from chronic pain; they will do their best to help you in every way! I’ve been a patient at Comprehensive Pain Center on and off since 2016 – but no longer, following a distressing experience with nurse practitioner, Gabrielle Kallmeyer. Ms. Kallmeyer repeatedly cut me off mid-sentence. She yelled at me to, “leave the practice,” while physically and aggressively following me – when I asked the medical assistants to ask the practice owner, Dr. Mark Matsunaga to call me. I last received prescriptions from CPC in May 2020. I did not feel I needed pain management and opted to stop taking the medications CPC prescribed. I’d done this previously. During an Oct. 3, 2021, ER visit for a painful infection, I was prescribed tramadol – 10 pills, with no refills. In April, I was prescribed narcotics following minor surgery. Today Ms. Kallmeyer accused me of “doctor shopping” because I was prescribed very limited amounts of narcotics in those two specific situations. I had not been seen at CPC since May 2020 for pain management. I did not think I needed to ask CPC for permission to fill these prescriptions because I was not under CPC’s care at the time. Ms. Kallmeyer told me that because I hadn’t formally withdrawn from CPC’s care that I violated a contract I signed in 2016. She said I was required to inform CPC – which I hadn’t seen in 11 and 17 months, respectively – that the ER doctor and surgeon had prescribed me narcotics. I questioned Ms. Kallmeyer because my prior experience with Dr. Matsunaga and a previous nurse practitioner never involved them accusing me of knowingly violating their rules. I asked what happens if you have an ER visit or surgery on a weekend. Ms. Kallmeyer claimed that all CPC calls are returned 24 hours/day. When I told her that calls are not always returned – which I know from personal experience, she became agitated and defensive, telling me how hard the CPC staff works. I responded that both things can be true: staff can be hard working, & calls are not always returned. I know because I had to call twice in order to make an appointment. I left a message that was never returned and had to call back and press other options to reach a live person. I am a former award-winning health and medical journalist. I am glad that pain management practices exist and am sad to see a provider who treated me so terribly be in a position where she can quite literally cause harm to other patients, both in their physical conditions and their mental states. Providers, especially those who treat people in pain, who should want to help, and not hurt, them. No patient deserves to be disrespected. It was inappropriate, mean, rude, and unnecessary. She also disclosed that my prior CPC nurse practitioner was “let go” for not following the practice’s guidelines. She was essentially saying – with no apology – that even though my prior experience with the practice was different than her description of the rules, it didn’t matter because my prior CPC nurse was fired for not following their guidelines. If there is truth to what happened to my prior nurse practitioner, then Ms. Kallmeyer disclosed personnel information about an employee to a patient – which is petty, small, and possibly illegal. My prior nurse practitioner was thorough, direct, and had a great bedside manner. Ms. Kallmeyer does not possess any of those qualities. Additionally, when I was seen in spring 2020 by Dr. Matsunaga, he did not bring up this issue, despite the fact I’d had a major orthopedic surgery in the previous year that required a prescription for narcotics to ease pain during recovery. I will not go back to CPC, and I am considering writing a freelance article about this. Too often, patients – especially Black and other minority patients – are talked down to, talked over, and disrespected by medical providers who have not learned that ALL patients deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I am quite medically knowledgeable, and Ms. Kallmeyer cut me off every time I attempted to ask questions. To be clear: As a patient, my concerns matter. I’ve been a patient at Comprehensive Pain Center on and off since 2016 – but no longer, following a distressing experience with nurse practitioner, Gabrielle Kallmeyer. Ms. Kallmeyer repeatedly cut me off mid-sentence. She yelled at me to, … More

Dr. Mark Matsunaga might be wonderful to the rest of you, however people born with genetic conditions don't see him in the same light. He was completely and utterly disrespectful as he proceeded to tell my friend that there basically was no resolution for her besides "losing weight." If it was that simple, it would've been done already. She did not go to you to disrespect her... Instead of bashing your patients, if you don't have a solution to offer then politely redirect them to who CAN!!!! I repeat do not go to him if you want REAL answers as well as compassionate care. All people want is to get a kind word and a gentle touch to not feel alone in any situation. Trust and believe Mark Matsunaga, I will be coming to you with a lawsuit soon. In the last two years, under the care of Dr. Matsunaga and Gabrielle, I have been able to cut back on dosage and switch to meds with less side effects, while still keeping my pain under control. This is the first time my medications have lessened instead of increased in the last decade. I have been a chronic pain patient for 10 years; regrettably the first 8 I was treated elsewhere. In the last two years, I’ve made more progress, both with my meds and my life as a whole, than I had in the previous eight years. Dr. M and Gabrielle believe in treating the whole patient, not just the pain itself. And to be clear, yes of course they are treating the pain, they don’t want their patients suffering. My point is that they don’t simply write new prescriptions and send me on my way. They ask about my other health conditions whether related to my pain or not, they check in about my mental state and encourage me to take care of myself in all ways. Dr. M believes patients should be active participants in their care; he encourages me to be the expert on my health and research all my options, and while he’ll offer his opinion on those he wants me to confidently make decision on what is best for me. Writing that sounds so obvious that of course a patient should be and don’t that, but in my experience with other doctors, his approach is truly something special as most doctors just tell you what you need to do and don’t make time to have those detailed discussions with you. Their approach was especially amazing during the pandemic, when I assume most people were experiencing some mental lows. Gabrielle was my cheerleader, acknowledging and celebrating my efforts and courage in facing the struggles I experienced. She has always offered that kind of support and encouragement, whether during pandemic struggles or whether it’s baby step progress in weaning down medications and getting a little more physically active. Now I can’t imagine ever going anywhere else for pain management. I have been a chronic pain patient for 15 years after an accident, and have been under the care of 4 pain specialists in that time. Dr. Mark helped deliver my first born almost 10 years ago and repeatedly checked on me in the Maternity ward as I was a most unusual case to be giving birth. His incredible dedication and compassion were obvious in those days, and I am happy to say that I have been his patient for many years now. I think the fact that there are many, many 5 star reviews and just a few 1 star reviews shows that there are possibly isolated cases, misunderstandings, or difference in opinions. The ones that really upset me though are the ones that insinuate that he’s “pushing” opioids. Matsunaga is a PAIN SPECIALIST. He’s not an orthopedic surgeon, family physician, or witch doctor. His job is to take you out of as much pain as possible and he has the knowledge and experience to do that. He has not once “pushed” an opioid on me, but did tell me that with the medications and interventions available, an opioid, at the minimal dosage needed, would be needed. I have trusted him from the beginning and have led as active a life I can despite my condition. And if you are prescribed an opioid, it is done under much scrutiny, with frequent drug testing and detailed questions that determine where you are in your current condition. I highly recommended Dr. Mark and despite 1-2 bad reviews, his staff is very friendly and caring. He has been a godsend to me with the current condition I’m in. My Mom had a new patient appointment today. The office staff was supposed to email her paperwork to her to fill out in advance. She called the office two days ago to say I haven't received the paperwork, we will email again was the answer she received. She got it this morning, we didn't have time to print and fill out. We arrived at 12:48 my Mom went in to start the process I came in after parking the car. The office staff said you have 6 mins to fill out the paperwork. The guy behind the counter actually sat watching us fill out the paperwork and his watch. We were almost done (page 9 of 13) when he said you need to reschedule. I said it's not easy to get Mom here it's painful for her and we're here now. No reschedule. We left the office, I went back and asked how can you penalize someone when the emailed paperwork didn't arrive it a timely fashion and we got here as soon as we could? I was asked to leave because they felt I was making a scene when I was just trying to explain that I thought their actions were not caring or compassionate. Doctor Matsunaga maybe you should review your office staff. I understand you are a good doctor however, we'll never know because your staff is ARROGANT, unyielding, impatient and not empathetic. Dr. Matsunaga has been kind and has helped me through some difficulties over the years, treating me always with respect. I have been his patient for about 10 years and I don’t know how I would get throuh my days without his direction and guidance. Hopefully, I will have a stimulator implant sometime in the near future and will be able to back off some of the prescriptions I have been taking for so long. His staff is always pleasant on the phone and in person, no matter how I may have screwed up an appointment and I thank them for all the assistance they have provided. I wish them all well. He has amazing reviews and is highly recommend and I can see why. He’s genuinely caring, he actually listens to your concerns. He doesn’t push anything like most doctors do and spends time going through you’re history and treats your particular case and don’t treat you like just another patient . He is truly amazing. I have been a pain management patient of Dr. Mark’s since he went “out on his own” in Columbia too many years ago, that memory fails me was it 13 or 15 years ago? I am his 1st patient after the computer being #1 to test. Dr. Mark is the most proficient kind/compassionate pain caregiver I have in my arsenal of pain mgmt. solutions giving me a quality of life to enjoy my grand-beauties, my fur-babies and movement again. Pain is debilitating & robs us of our quality of day to day life. TY Dr. Mark

Matsunaga prescribes way too many opioids, which causes problems with your body’s internal systems and develops the need to keep increasing these opioids to take away pain. He has horrible bedside manner because he does not respect or exhibit compassion towards the patient. I started going to Dr. Matsunaga after I had a failed back surgery. I still had nerve pain going down my left leg. I could barely walk on some days. I spent nearly a yearly going to doctors trying to find out why I still had nerve pain and trying to find a way to make life manageable. I had another Dr. recommend Dr. Matsunaga. Finally, someone that would listen to me and cared! He wanted me to get back to a normal and active life as much as I did.
