I had the flu. I went to get medicine flu shot by Dr Peter chang. He gave me a shot in each hip. After I got them I had to go to e.r. for severe lower back pain in my hips. They did mri and told me I needed emergency surgery on my spine to relieve pinched disc's. They sent me dr duarte to visit me in my hospital bed and he started seeing me in hospital to convince me to let him operate. So I agreed to alleviate the pain, Instead I got Infected and septic. Also for my recovery they sent me to a rehab nursing home where I spent 7 days in bed with no rehab on my body. My family took me out of nursing home and took me to abilene Hendricks hospital, where they told me I was septic and going to die if I wasn't admitted for osteomyelitis treatment. My blood was infected from the operation. Had I stayed in the nursing home for rehab id be dead!!!! I have been crippled and in worse pain ever since. Its been 2 years!!! How is this man still in practice?!!!! They are going to make a movie about this man after enough of us are maimed and crippled!!! Before the surgery i could walk. After surgery I can't stand for 10 mins before I collapse.

The stars are for Dr. Duarte ONLY...this office has lost my husbands appointments and told him he had an appointment for a steroid shot then when he got there told him it was a preliminary appt, which he already had. The office staff is polite and seem nice, but disorganized when it comes to specifics. I had an appointment with Dr. Duarte ( or so I thought) and when I was on the table for my cortisone shot it was given to me by a PA who was in a rush, didn't numb me properly and gave me great pain. She ran out after like her coat was on fire. I am seeing Dr.Duarte today, he will be giving me a hip injection, I hope it will be different than the PA. He really listens to you and takes what you say into consideration, taking time to see if my suspicions were correct as to what was wrong with my back/hip. I feel as if I finally have a diagnosis after years of pain. ETA: I have a back injury now, I am not getting the information as to what is going on .I had to google in order to find out the procedure he wants to perform. My husband was with me and Duarte would be talking to him instead of me. Like I was just a dumb woman. NOT HAPPY!!!!

My mother was wronged by Dr. Duarte. This doctor opened her up, did nothing then closed her up without doing a single thing. There was no drain tube in her after he closed her up. When work has actually been done in a surgery, a drain tube is present. If you don't do anything inside there is no reason for a drain tube. Dr. Duarte claimed he had done work to her and that she needed more work done. More surgery?!?! My mother was fixed by a Dr. who worked with Dr. Duarte at Shannon. He stated he could not say anything negative about Dr. Duarte because it would be career suicide, but he did say that Dr. Duarte did nothing but open and close her. I have a suggestion for him. I think when he give the steroids injection or nerve block he needs to use the numbing stuff that all the other DRs use. It's feels like it's a freezing but it helps so much. Help your Patients not to feel so much pain..Thank you.

My husband had a bad fall resulting in a head injury. Dr Duarte operated to relieve the swelling. Excellent neurosurgeon. Wonderful outcome. It could have been very bad. Quick action by Dr Duarte saved my husband's life.

Wonderful Godly man. Very good at what he does. We are very lucky to have a neurosurgeon in the area. I don’t understand all the negative comments, there is no magic pill or surgery to fix neck/back/nerve pain. What works for one won’t work for others. If your chasing pills maybe you should be looking for alternatives like exercise/ diet change. There is also a physiological side to pain. You have to be real about what can be fixed and what you have to live with. Understand pain and how it can control your life if you let it. Wonderful Godly man. Very good at what he does. Operated on my son's brain tumor. He was so good to all of us, his family. I had several phone appointments from home and he was just as good and kind as he is when I have an office call. He has many patients and so busy. We are all so thankful for him. We are kind with his staff and they are the same to us in kind. Worst experience for my grandfather, this dr ruined his life, can never walk again

My nerve surgery lasted less than a year a lot of money down the drain. Still have very bad back pain.

He doesn’t even deserve one star. Do NOT use him. I know doctor’s can have odd personalities, but this is beyond that. He truly doesn’t care about his patients or know what he’s doing. It’s about money for him.

This Dr. kept stringing me along for close to a year, doing minimal procedures and maximum charges to my insurance company. He scheduled surgery procedures like getting on an amusement ride at Six Flags. I was #24 on my day of surgery procedure, one of two procedures that morning, next one was a week later. My mother has had back and neck pain most of her life and we have been to many many doctors through out the years to help with different situations. Dr Duarte is one of the worst doctors we have ever been to. He is rude shows no compassion what’s so ever toward his patient. Does not like to be questioned or does not explain anything. I read other reviews and wondered who these people was talking about! Dr Duarte prayed with us before my fusion, always answers my questions. I have had to wait longer than I expected but, when my turn did come my care was well worth it. I guess opinions will depend on expectations I needed most of all a huge BRAIN and skilled HANDS (he is very nice) that's what I got. When I needed someone to TALK to I got a psychiatrist. Very poor. He was treating me for severe headaches. Ordered every test known, except the right one. Actually, I had cancer, for which I received treatment at MD Anderson.

My husband never walked again after his surgery! 6 1/2 years of confinement to a bed and wheelchair! Much prayer was needed to forgive this man! Ruined my husbands life and mine.

Dr. Duarte - do everything you can to avoid this “doctor”. Unprofessional, unreliable, and uncaring. I broke my back, and he hardly stepped foot in my room but to shake my hand and tell me I’ll be better soon... That was his medical advice after waiting for his expertise for over 12 hours!!! This little man is an embarrassment.

All I can say is thank God we now have a better, much needed back specialist in this town! I no longer have to drive out of town to see someone that actually cares and is sympathetic with his patience. He just took me off my pain pills. He has given to me for 5 yrs. Just because my urine test showed Merajuana in it. I've never used it in my life. His Nurse is very rude. I can't believe they did that to me.But I do understand why they did it. He is a awesome Doctor. His staff needs some help Nurse Cindy is very rude. I love all his P.As. I am very satisfied with the service I have had since Dr Dua rte placed a pain pump I have been given a chance at a new life,he is awesome and so is the staff I believe that I am a new person and I don't want to go back to the way my back was before God bless him and The ones trained to do that because of the surgery he performed and implant I no longer have a great deal of pain. Bologna!! He damaged my Husband's Sciatic Nerve during a 360 fusion back surgery causing permanent peripheral neuropathy. He has no law suits because Texas has not allowed it. Other Doctors won't go against him and report the damage he does! I would not give him a star at all but have to to get this to post.

Same as so many others...waiting in the exam room over 2 hours in pain. Staff is as unprofessional as Duarte. It is clear to me he does not look over your chart before he comes in the room. Horrible person and doctor.

Well it started with his NP. Jamie Prieto. Had an appt to see her which have to say took her over two hrs to show up. In the visit we discussed what tests would be ordered and as to why I am not able to have an mri ( metal in my body). So I have tests done and go for my follow-up with Dr Duarte. If I could give 0 stars I would!!! This is the worst doctors office I have ever dealt with!!!! They refuse to return calls, I've gone 2 weeks calling every day without so much as a return call from an assistant. The worst experience was the epidural injection! Never saw the doctor, for all I know it was the janitor that did it, didn't numb the area just the assistant asked me to say my name then bam, worst pain in my neck ever. He hit a nerve and walked away as if nothing happened!! It took me a month to heal, they never called to check on me until I reported them to administration. That was 5 days of unreturned calls. I am still in more pain than before that injection. Then after I was in a serious accident I called to be seen, never received a call back! I had a follow up appt previously scheduled 10 days after I was hit and they had the odacity to say they saw my calls but were too busy to call me back, didn't even address the major injuries I received from the accident and actually told me I needed to make a separate appt to discuss it, unreal!!! I could write a novel on how terrible this office is! I have scheduled an appt for a doc in Austin, anything will be better than the horrid treatment I have received from the brain and spine institute!!! Don't waste your time and money!!! I know he doesn't read these reviews, but from what I have learned with almost 8 months of dealing with him that is exactly who he is. Dr. Duarte and his staff jerked my family around so hard for months. His staff might not have meant it either so I regress. His staff actually looked embarrassed a lot of times. Be it mischeduling appointments, messing up insurance forms which would extend appointments or procedures it was never ending. At the very least 5 months of this from a woman with insurance mind you, but a woman so in pain and so committed to the process picking a new doctor wasn't an option. So with a surgery for replacing vertebraes, major back surgery, getting rescheduled at least twice we finally show up. Surgery is at 3pm and she doesn't get in until after 9pm. She hasn't eaten or drank in over 24 hours. Still in pain. THEY WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE HER AN ICE CUBE. They had zero idea on his schedule, wouldn't accommodate her and just left her in that room suffering more than she was before she went into surgery. No information whatsoever outside of his nurses not even expecting her because they thought she was in surgery already. Once surgery comes up I give them my phone number and ask for updates or calls on progress and nothing. It wasn't until the next day I expressed myself to the nurses that he hasn't called me, hasn't tried to reach out to me and tell me how her surgery went, what to expect..... Hasn't done anything. He called me maybe 15 minutes later and gave me a decent breakdown of how the surgery went, but the ONLY thing I will ever remember is me letting him know politely that I was disappointed in the communication. This is her life. My family. He signed up for this. He chuckled under his breath. You could honestly feel a smile on his face. It felt like mockery over my concern. I will NEVER recommend this doctor. I actually know RNs who have been here for years when he first showed up and told us not to go with him until it was to late. About 10 yrs ago I was recommended to Duarte for my back problem. I didn't like his personality so I stopped going to him. I hear this about him many times, he's arrogant, doesn't take the time to explain all major details of patients issues or maybe just to the ones he favors! He performed spinal surgery on my brother n law about 6 mons ago and he was doing ok. He was in a lot of pain but that normal. He started doing swimming therapy about 2weeks ago and he was so happy that he was able to swim again. Before the surgery his leg went numb so he couldn't walk. After the surgery he was able to walk and feel leg. But this past Friday his leg went numb again, so he's back in the hospital. My sister told me they have done different types of MRIs but haven't found what's causing leg to go numb. This morning my sister asked when Dr Duarte was coming to see her husband and nurse said that he had dismissed himself from this case. Can u imagine hearing this and u can barely walk! My son has had surgery by Dr. Duarte for Parkinson's, and always good results, he takes time to address all our concerns.

Dr Duarte is the best, he is so upbeat, positive and made me feel I was safe under his care . WHAT A DOC, go see him, you won't regret it

Dr Duarte is the VERY BEST !!! He loves his patients, and tries everything he can, to help them feel better. He will NOT do surgery unless he believes that he can help. I've been seeing him for over 5 years. He has done 2 Spinal Fusions, and implanted a spinal cord stimulator.

He is an amazing surgeon with a lot of experience. He is caring and compassionate and he puts his patience before anything else. Would recommend to everyone and would always see him. Great doc with great skill. He’s simply amazing.

I think Dr. Duarte is extremely skilled. He is an excellent doctor. He listens to you and is easy to talk with. I am not fan of the nurse practitioner that I have to see before I see Dr. Duarte. She always seems too busy to bother with me and I think she puts herself in place of the doctor. I would trust him 100%. But, be prepared for most of your care to come from a young nurse practitioner, who is too busy to give good medical advise and thinks she is the doctor.

Dr. Duarte's office assisted me a year ago with an epidural to help with my bulging disc. It solved my pain for over a year which was better than I had and they expected. The pain is back and I assume the bulging disc is also back and inflamed. I have called for 3 days to try to get pain management or an appointment to be seen to do another epidural or some sort of pain management. I spoke with the answering service during business hours all three days. Each time I was told I would get a call from a nurse but I have yet to get a call. I had to go to the emergency room last night because the pain was unbearable. I believe that he is a quality doctor but his management and staff are irresponsible. This is usually not a reflection of the Shannon group of medical providers but something needs to be done within his organization. Hope for a better provider soon! I can not even begin to explain what I experienced and am still experiencing with this doctor . His receptionists are smart ales and rude. I had surgery and I don't feel any better. A good friend told me that he was a Christian and really cared about his patients, well nobody there cares and I hate to say but I caught him in a lie and that really hurts me but I forgive him and wish him and his family well and that God blesses them. I am not a spitful person I just want to be told the truth and treated with respect that's all. Am I in pain you can't even imagine. He put in some injection to help me so far so good. Wanting on other test results see what's going on with my legs and back. But he has great bed manners.

Dr Duarte performed two brain surgeries on me back in May and July 95 when I was in the Navy. He was my savior and brought me back from a certain death without your expertise and faith in God. I would not be alive today. I don't understand the bad reviews this man is an outstanding neurosurgeon that takes his job very serious. I must admit that he is stern and will tell you exactly what to expect, as long as you want to live a longer and better life listen to him. I fought his suggestions and orders in the beginning, but when I grew up and stood tall I saw the new me. I'm sure he still tell his patients that once you operate on your brain you will never be the same as you were. Until you can move on and accept that fact you will always fight against your doctor, family, friends, and even yourself. Amazing Doctor! Helped my wife immensely. Kind, compassionate, and understanding!

by far the best doctor i have ever come in contact with. His generosity fits his professional personality perfectly. Not always is he a generous and intuitive person, he is the most skilled doctor in the south and i wouldn't recommend any other neurosurgeon besides him. not only will he heal your present pain, he will make sure he follows it through to the very end.

This man is a terrible Doctor. Definitely not a man that people should want to see. Obviously not the best in his field either or he would be in a better position. Uncaring, in compassionate, and overall a MAJOR disappointment.

Neither duarte nor his PA will return calls. Today a girl calls to say they want to do a nerve block, which my insurance has denied TWICE. Do NOT waste your time and health here. Dr. Duarte is professional, courteous, and efficent. Surgeons aren't really meant to have bedside manner, they are meant to correct a problem, but this one does. Your recovery takes work on your behalf, but this man gives you the implements you need to succeed at your own health.

Dr. Duarte has performed back surgery on me as well as follow up care. His staff is incredibly friendly and compassionate. It has been 10 years since my surgery and I am still doing well after the surgery.

Dr.Duarte warned my girlfriend that she would suffer intense pain for up to 4 weeks after her back surgery. We then asked if he would provide pain management for those 4 weeks. He assured us that he would. After a week and a half the original perscription ran out. We called and asked for a refill. Theychanged meds to tylenol 4 which only helped a little with the pain. 2-3 hours sleep per night is all we get. Now 2 1/2 weeks after surgery we are out of even tylenol 4. Girlfriend is in extreme pain and taking over the counter tylenol. Calls and pleas are stonewalled by nurse who won't allow us to speak to Dr. Girlfriends stomach is ill due to so much tylenol and I have to wonder what this is doing to her liver as well. Duarte is a liar and his staff are rude and unfeeling monsters who could care less about their patients pain or health. However, I would love for someone to explain why I have been sitting in a waiting room for over two hours for an appt. that had a scheduled time of an hour and a half ago. If you are in surgery until noon everyday, why do you schedule people to register at 9:30 in the morning and then force them to sit in pain for the entire morning. Is their suffering if no concern to you, or is it that our time is not valued. I may not be as upset if it were possible to get an explanation from anyone of the dozen hospital employees that are making excuses for you. If I were to arrive late for an appt. I would not only loose my appt time, I would be charged a fee as well. Where do I send the bill for my time that you are wasting and the added pain that is being inflicted sitting in this waiting room. Dr Duarte is a great doctor. Since 2010 I have had so many issues because of 6 previous rear end collision, fractured my L2 and two back surgery on my L4-S1, injection and multiple testing including 2 trial spinal stimulators so you can say my spine is really messed up. Since 2010 I have at least 4 Other orthopedic surgeons, 2, Pain Management doctors, & several PTs. And I have had an unlimited amount of cortisone injections. I have seen Dr Duarte since 2010 and after I moved I even drove back a 3-4 times to see him which was a 3 hour drive one way just because I liked his mannerisms and he prays with you before he goes into surgery. In 2014 after I fractured my back I went to a doctor closer to home then went to a second and third doctor for an opinion about surgery on my back. I decided to go with the surgery and needless to say he messed up my nerves in my left leg, my bone grafts did not take and I had worse pain then I did before the surgery. Come to find out I had a screw loose which was hitting a nerve and my bone graft never fused. So I had an CT after seeing a fifth Orthopedic who wanted to remove the hardware which is what I really wanted but since the bone graft didn't work then my stability would be bad so I returned home to Dr Duarte who reviewed all of my CTs and medical files and told me what he thought he could do to make me feel better. I decided after about 40 minutes in his office asking all kinds of questions to go ahead and have to surgery redone. I am now 4 days post op and the feeling has returned from the previous surgery and I able to move at least two small toes ... Before I could not move my three small toes on my left leg or feel anything.... Now I can! My back doesn't have to sharp burning pain going down my rear into my leg and my left knee doesn't hurt. I'm excited to see what i will be capable of doing once I completely heal. Dr. Duarte is an amazing and talented doctor! I will NEVER see another Orthopedic Neuro! Even though Dr. Duarte is wonderful at what he does, the front office staff are rude, you have to wait forever to get an appointment, and you will have to see his PAs ... which I don't like .... but for me to feel like I do right now .... it's very well worth it! I really don't understand all the negative comments. Dr Duarte was very professional and caring. I was in such pain prior to seeing him and after surgery I have no pain. It was the best decision I ever made. This man gave me my life back. I especially appreciated how he prayed with my family and me prior to surgery. I found the entire team very compassionate. I called in to schedule an appointment & the wait time was over 15 minutes. Afterwards the young lady I spoke with had very bad (broken English) which forced me to ask her to repeat things several times which seemed to bother her.
