He was thorough with his exam, did the proper follow up (MRI & Nerve Studies), and said surgery would be too complicated, to go to Emory. My insurance doesn’t cover Emory bc I’m on the AL side but I’ll find another dr to take care of it. Have to research Neurosurgeons and get referral from Westerlund..

I waited longer than I should have to seek him out but am so pleased with results. Dr Westerlund exhausted all resources to avoid surgery but when it became apparent surgery was required he and the entire staff explained everything and put a plan in place. They answered all my concerns and have been available for all needs afterward. I continue to get better and recommend him for anyone in need of spine surgery.

Dr Westerlund performed very complex lumbar bi level fusion very succesfully relieving years of pain. Dr and staff have been very responsive to all needs and continue to followup. I highly recommend him for any needed procedure. They exhausted all options before deciding the surgery was the last option and were very good at informing me of all that would be involved.

I have a new lease on life and am studying travel brochures. I was totally crippled with pain and measured everything in terms of how many steps I would have to take (and forget stairs). I had everything wrong with my back and once he got inside he found things wrong that hadn’t shown up in the MRI. He doubled my surgery time and repaired those things, too. My recovery was easy, his PA, Ivey, was helpful with all my questions, and my back healed up without any complications. He is brilliant and I recommend him to anyone referred for surgery. It is so wonderful to walk without pain.

Dr. Westerlund performed my back surgery in 2019 and it was successful. Back again due to my problem with my neck. Awaiting to be scheduled for an MRI to get to the root of the problem. I’m confident that God will orchestra Dr. Westerlund to find out what is going on with me and remedy the problem. The pain is sparadic which comes at unpredictable times which makes me feel like I’m about to die.

Dr. Westerlund found severe degenerative cervical spondylosis in C-3 thru C-7 with advanced stenosis in C-4 thru C-7. He did an anterior cervical osteotomy resection and release at C4-5, C5-6 and C6-7, complete discectomy from C4-C7, complete discectomy from C4-C7, formal partial central corpectomy resection of C5 and C6, interbody reconstruction with anterior cervical plate instrumentation and corrective realignment from C4-C7 in July of 2022. I felt immediate relief after surgery. I can't believe I waited so long to have my issues addressed and lived so long in pain. It has now been six months since my surgery. I am doing great! Dr. Westerlund is a fantastic surgeon and has the best personality. I highly recommend him. He is so easy to talk with, he takes time to listen to you and makes sure you understand what is going on inside your body. Everyone in the office treated me with kindness and his assistant always has a smile on her face and is very helpful explaining things.

Dr. Westerlund is the best surgeon I have ever seen. He operated on both my husband years ago and me recently and we are now completely pain free. He is kind, sympathetic, and professional. He is also great at explaining and making you understand the situation!

I went to see Dr. Westerlund and the staff were friendly as usual, I sat in the waiting room for about 15 minutes and then was placed in a room where I waited for another 5 minutes. The doctor popped in the room and introduced himself and looked at my MRI and asked for more X-rays. We went and did the x-rays and came back to the room, she no sooner had them brought up on the screen than he came back in the room. The x-rays were a lot clear than the MRI. He showed me the problem and told me we had some time before doing drastic measures and if I would be up to trying something else. We discussed the issue, I made my decision and I left knowing all the options I would be facing in the future. I was about in 30 minutes, so I know it can be done. Why these other doctors take so long is beyond me.

This is not the first surgery, With DR. Erik Westerlund, I trusted him.

My visit was on Doctors Appointment and I was so satisfied, Doctor Erick Westerlund is a good surgeon and a good man, he knows his work very well.

It is rare to find a Dr. who is both technically excellent and able to relate and communicate effectively with his patients. From the first interaction with his staff, through exams, surgery and follow up, my experience was absolutely the best that I could imagine. Sandra, his secretary was compassionate and highly efficient in scheduling and coordinating my appointments and surgery. His nurses and P.A. Ivy were so kind and professional. They each made me feel as though I was the only patient that they were helping. The appointments were always on time and I never felt rushed. Dr. Westerlund spent time answering my questions and explaining what was causing my pain. He offered several treatment options and helped me to choose what seemed to be the best course of action. I am now 15 days post op. Prior to the surgery, I was unable to grasp and hold a cup of coffee and now I have zero nerve pain and the strength in my hand and arm is returning. After 7 years of spinal stenosis, I had to have surgery. I couldn't put it off any longer and went to Dr. Erik Westerlund. He viewed the xray and MRI and eplained exactly what he could do to help me. I am now 3 months post surgery and feeling great! I would highly recommend Dr. Westerlund and his staff and the Hughston Clinic to anyone needing spinal surgery.

Dr. Westerlund was a God send for me. I had been suffering with sciatica nerve pain since 2002. Have had the injections shots, chiropractor adjustments, and therapy on many many many occasions. But to no avail they all were temporary. My situation had gotten debilitating where I couldn’t walk but a short period of time. Sitting too long made it bad. It was getting where laying down didn’t help. My quality of life was at a low. God sent me to see Dr. Westerlund and I’m glad He did. After viewing my films he explained exactly what was happening and what he would do to rectify my problem.He performed a Minimally Invasive Posterior Lumbar Decompression and Reconstruction surgery. When I woke up after surgery the debilitating pain was gone. The next day I did therapy by walking and felt good. Therapy team released me. I went home that same evening. It will be two weeks on tomorrow and the only pain I’m in is my incisions which are healing. I do recommend Dr. L Eric Westerlund.

I had excruciating sciatica pain down my entire right leg for almost two years. When the pain became so unbearable it affected my daily activities and quality of life I sought help. Two different pain doctors and two spinal injections in a two month span gave me NO relief. I saw one surgeon and wasn’t overwhelmed and called to set an appt with Dr. Westerlund. His office said they were booking at the Columbus office (he has office hours in Auburn too) for June (6 weeks out) but God had a better plan for me and I got a cancellation spot for the next day. I knew from the minute he reviewed my X-rays and started to talk that’s where God wanted me and I was going to be fine. Fast forward to exactly two weeks ago...he operated for 3 1/2 hours on my L3-L4 discs and I have been absolutely pain free since I woke up!!! I can walk without pain!! He and his staff are the BEST OF THE BEST! Every encounter I’ve had with anyone in his office has been excellent. They care about their patients.

I've been dealing with major lower back pain for several years and finally had enough. Dr. Westerlund got me in for a MRI and it revealed issues with my L5-S1. The surgery was scheduled and the problem was repaired in a timely manner. Dr. Westerlund and his staff have been wonderful throughout this process. I'm in the healing stage but feel great.

An "above excellent" neurosurgeon. He repaired my L1-L2 in 2012 and C-5,6,7 in 2019. I have no pain or issues from any of his excellent work nor do I take any pain medicine afterward. 100% recovery. He's a very kind and sympathetic surgeon and very gifted in his field. When I was told surgery was the only option the 2nd time around, I made sure that he was the surgeon that would perform the work needed. I live pain-free from his "above excellent skills and knowledge." Extremely recommended!

Dr. Westerlund has been fantastic. He helped me through my lower back problems, and ultimately had to do surgery. He did a wonderful job. I had a somewhat difficult recovery due to anesthesia problems, but he was right there the whole time. And now, two years later, I feel like a new man. I have no back pain at all. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Dr. Westerlund performed my neck surgery on November 2, 2017. My surgery went great and my recovery process has been very impressive to Dr. Westerlund. He and his entire staff are very professional. He takes time to explain every detail of the procedure that is to be performed. He is very thorough when diagnosing his findings on the first initial visit. Love my Dr. Westerlund!

Dr. Westerlund Did my C spine surgery on 12/1/2017 I have had bad experiences with past surgery's from different Doctors. Doctor Westerlund is one of the most caring and professional Doctor that I have ever had an experience with he takes the time to talk with you about the problem you are having and goes into details and treatment plans and treat you like he has known you for a long time you don't get that from most Doctors He is a very compassionate Doctor and I will recommend him to anyone

Dr. Westerlund is a expert surgeon and corrected my complex lower back issues with confidence and professionalism.

Outstanding bedside manner which went a long way towards alleviating my concerns. He spent plenty of time with me and answered all my questions. He wanted to start out with conservative treatment (pain mgmt, injections) but was willing to operate when that didn't help. Dr. Westerlund actually operated on my PT's wife too, and my PT highly recommends him. I'm just starting PT now, and am hopeful for a great outcome. If you need a great orthopedic surgeon, you can't go wrong with Dr. Westerlund.

I am a 33 year old healthy and active woman, but have been in pain at the L4/L5 level for the past year. Here I am almost 2 weeks after surgery and feel pretty awesome. I expect to continue healing and getting better each day. Dr. Westerlund, Ms. Ivy Holt, Ms. Misty Green, and Ms. Vicky have been a wonderful team to work with. Their professionalism and knowledge made me feel I was in super hands. Dr. Westerlund put my mind at ease. I highly recommend this awesome team for back pain!

After 2 months of other doctors not finding my problem, Dr. Westerlund found it within an hour. He fixed the problem at it's root as opposed to the doctors at Midtown Medical Center. I spent nearly a week in the hospital only to be sent home with tons of pain medicine. Now, 3 weeks after Dr. Westerlund did surgery, my life is almost back to normal. I and my family thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Exceptional care and patiance. I feel 100% better since my sergery. His office staff was magnificent, they were there to answer all questions and support me during my process. BEST Doctor and surgeon. Great staff and always put my health first. Dr. Westerlund is always available if I needed him even after hours and on the weekend. The surgery he did on my neck gave me complete relief of my pain. His surgical team was great and caring and very knowledgable. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Westerlund talked to me like he knew me and my family and cared about my health now and the future. He sets the tone of caring and professionalism for the rest of the staff.

Dr. Westerlund and his staff are extremely courteous and professional. Every question/concern I could ever imagine was addressed in detail.From the minute I walked through the doors I was treated like I was the only patient in the building. Missy, Ivy and Dr. W(and the amazing person that signed me in-didn't get her name) actually made having a surgical procedure and follow up a pleasant experience and that is a difficult feat. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this practice to family/friends!

I have been seeing Dr. Westerlund for spine and back issues. He is very good at explaining what is wrong, going through the x-rays or MRIs and leaving time to answer any questions I would have. He is a very caring and compassionate doctor that is very easy to talk to. His procedures went just as planned and I am now pain free after having a herniated disc. The office staff is always courteous and helpful. I would highly recommend him.

Life changing! I came to Dr.Westerlund after 6 years of pain and immobility with no answers from other drs. Dr. Westerlund is engaging, clear, concise, thorough and compassionate. I left with a diagnosis and plan which I have implemented with great success in the first couple weeks. My family can't believe the change and have already recommended Dr. Westerlund to others. I came to Dr. Westerlund in extreme pain in my lower back and leg after a completely unsatisfactory surgery with another neurosurgeon in Columbus. After reviewing my results, we agreed that I needed surgery, but I was leaving for Costa Rica the next day. Ivy, his wonderful P.A., suggested I try a steroid pack for pain relief. THAT suggestion allowed me to ENJOY my trip with very little or NO PAIN!! The entire staff is friendly, caring & professional. Have recommended to several friends!

Dr. Westerlund is very professional and pleasant to talk to. He explained what to expect on my first visit. He has changed my life drastically in a good way. I was falling apart at a fast pace and he put me back together. Meeting him and allowing him to repair the three herniated discs and pinched nerve in my neck has been by far the best decision I have ever made. I highly recommend Dr. Westerlund! He performed an anterior/posterior lumbar fusion on me in January 2017 and i had the best care from day one! He does not perform unnecessary surgery so i felt totally at ease. Between him and his PA Ivey, they constantly checked on me. Another huge event that occurred during my recovery is that Dr. Westerlund found a tumor in my stomach that ended up being cancer. He basically saved my life and i will be forever grateful. He is a very thorough surgeon!!

My experience has been a little different because I don't have insurance. I was unable to get out of bed for two months and in the worst pain of my life. The team at the doctors office assisted me as much as they could via phone and once I got in to see the doctor he jump right on my situation. My surgery was successful and the whole team made me feel like my case was most important. Let me say thank you to Dr. Westerlund and his entire staff for the care and work shown to me. Thanks Misty

The office staff is very helpful and friendly!! Dr. Westerlund is the BEST!!!. He always takes the time to answer all your questions and explain everything. He reviews all nonsurgical procedures and options for you to decide and determine if surgery is your best option. He loves his work and shows you before and after x-rays to see the improvements from the surgery. We love him and highly recommend him to everyone.

Approachable, honest, very capable spine surgeon. I came to Dr. Westerlund for a 2nd opinion for surgical options. I had seen two other doctors, to include one at a center that is on national TV. He introduced me to a minimally invasive surgery that provided more a permanent solution than what others were offering. He was honest about the expectations and limitations. He performed my surgery almost two years ago now, and I continue to do incredibly well. Wonderful caring office and staff!

My experience with Dr. Westerlund and his staff was exactly what I was looking for in an orthopedic surgeon and follow-up care. Dr. Westerlund bed side manors and patience explaining what procedure is best for my back increased after the first visit. My husband and I had total confidence that I was in the best hands possible. The office nurse Misty is very pleasant and has excellent follow-up technique which I believe makes the complete experience A-1.
