There is no difference between the two degrees: dentists who have a DMD or DDS have the same education. Universities have the prerogative to determine what degree is awarded. Both degrees use the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. Generally, three or more years of undergraduate education plus four years of dental school is required to graduate and become a general dentist. State licensing boards accept either degree as equivalent, and both degrees allow licensed individuals to practice the same scope of general dentistry. Additional post-graduate training is required to become a dental specialist.

The most unfriendly, unprofessional staff I have ever dealt with. I know most only go to him because they have no other choice with insurance. He yelled at my child and rolled his eyes at him telling him DO NOT PUT YOUR FEET ON MY UPHOLSTREY when my son bent his knees and had his feet clearly on the plastic cover for the upholstery They also get extra money from you by telling you to go to your dentist for the referral and X-ray then when you make an appointment with them they tell you that you have to pay for another X-ray because the won’t accept the one from your dentist and insurance won’t cover another X-ray that soon. Very uncomfortable atmosphere from start to finish of consultation. I have let my primary dentist know and they said they will no longer refer to this office.

The receptionist was very rude. As I was speaking she cut me rudely and put me on hold. I had given my information but the appointment day was too far out. I told her that the other office had a sooner date that she said. She immediately said have a great day and hung up on me before I could finish anything.

Today I had a wisdom tooth and a broken molar next to it removed. Dr. Wirth and his staff were very professional. I was provided with a written consent form that was extremely informational as well as aftercare information. I appreciate that there was minimal to no small talk(I'm hard of hearing and wear aids). The conversation was directly related to the issue I was experiencing. He thoroughly explained everything necessary and my options. My mouth is a mess due to ongoing chronic illness and treatment resistant depression. He didn't make any rude or condescending comments which I truly appreciate because I was expecting it. I would absolutely return if needed! Thank you so much!

I was hesitant about coming here due to the reviews, but unfortunately it is the only place in Illinois that takes my insurance. I had to have my wisdom teeth removed and at my consultation was told that a portion of one of my wisdom teeth may have to stay in if it did not come out easily, because it could cause nerve damage. They ended up fully removing it and the day of surgery the entire right side of my face was numb. By the time I was "there" enough to call after getting home, I tried to call the number they gave me about my concerns but the office was closed and they have no after hours number. Then it was a long weekend and I couldn't call until Tuesday. When I called about the numbness, I was asked if I had taken my antibiotic, which I was never prescribed. They prescribed one even though I had no symptoms of infection, as a response to the numbness. I called again today, almost 2 weeks later, regarding the numbness and was told that the Dr told me that this was going to happen and that I will eventually regain feeling, which is not the truth even if thats what he had written in my chart. I still have no feeling in half of my tongue or my lower jaw. Aside from the numbness, one of the reviews stated that they were strapped to the chair, to which the Dr responded that they don't have straps or restraints. THAT IS A LIE. They 100% do have them. And used them on me as well. Also, while getting my IV and oxygen on to prep for the surgery, I asked the Dr what I would be prescribed for pain and he responded "whatever you want" which is not a professional response. Do not go here if you can avoid it. I was hesitant about coming here due to the reviews, but unfortunately it is the only place in Illinois that takes my insurance. I have yet to have my surgery to extract possibly 3 wisdom teeth, but he shared with me that he has had to operate on his own daughter which gave me a lot of confidence he knows his job well! Everyone keeps talking about his bedside manner, we are ADULTS not children. He is blunt and straight forward. Your teeth are not something to mess around about wrongly so if you aren’t going to listen to his instructions, find another dentist and leave your negative review to yourself. He is very informative and cares only about your safety. As he should, right? I agree you should feel comfortable, but don’t expect that if you want treated like a baby. I drove 3 and a half hours to see him and will be doing it again in April. Definitely recommend! If you can give -10 stars that would be a gracious rating. From the first visit to the last the situation and story with what needed done changed each time. The ENTIRE staff, the Dr especially were extremely rude. The Dr almost made you feel terrified like a little child he was so mean. The day my first (and last at this Dr) was done I was told and given, and my driver was told and given follow up instructions that included that dissolvable sutures would be used and should dissolve within about 2 weeks. I was sedated but not under complete anesthesia and the Dr had a very hard time getting a vein, which is very common with me, I have some harder to get veins, I actually because I as a grown adult wanted to get up and leave but tried to think maybe I am just nervous, but I know exactly how many needles were used before a vein was able to be used. The 7th time it worked so 6 needles would have been "wasted". I was in awe as the DR. chucked the needles down when it did not work as if mad at me that I was hard to get a vein, as if I have any training on that, I assume he does. or maybe he was mad the needles were being wasted, I really don't know but I have never in my 50 years seen a DR throw needles when they cannot get a vein. And it has happened many a time that they have tried over and over. A dr throwing a temper tantrum it seemed but even as an adult it was a scared shock. He rolled his eyes at his technician at one point. I must of been at fault that meant that he could not get a vein. Then after about the 5th try I got the guts to kind of look at him, he was just glaring at me with piercing eyes. scary to even an adult when no one likes major dental procedures. After 2 1/2 weeks I called the office concerned about bones coming down from the surgery but they were caught in the sutured and they had not dissolved at all. That was a Monday and I was told "give it until Friday and if nothing changes call back" By Thursday the gums had swollen so bad they had come over the bones and sutures and resealed. And the pain was terrible. 10 times worse than the day I came home. So I decided to call Thursday and not wait until Friday. Well wow I was told the dr was out until the end of the month, almost 2 weeks later. Imagine that. Call back Friday, and I call a day earlier and he is out for almost 2 weeks. The did not know that on Monday? They said there was absolutely nothing they could do. I called and got in the very day he returned and was told that they told me the sutures were not dissolvable and it was my fault all this had happened. But I have the follow up care instruction papers stating they were dissolving. Total opposite. Now I had been sedated so I have no recollection of anything after the surgery but before my driver and I were both told they were going to be dissolving as did the papers I brought home. So basically the blatantly lied to me to make me feel I was at fault. Now 2 weeks later they have not only not healed but most of the gums and tissue have died. I am seeing another surgeon and hopefully they are going to be able to rebuild my gum tissue so I can get dentures at some point and my lower teeth have still yet to also be removed. Much more I could say but it is already a long comment but if I can stop someone else from going here and having the same fate hopefully this helps...I would NOT put any part of my life or well being in this man's hands. Terrible very unprofessional unreal experience. Nothing even as a child could compare. There are some serious issues at this office. Adding to this after reading the comments on another persons review, the response said you never said anything at the office that you weren't happy. That patient also said she was so scared. You felt scared to say a word the Dr looked like the angriest man I had ever seen. I was told twice to shut up and sit down while sedated, unaware of what even I was doing. s So to the other person, I totally know why you waited to comment "behind your computer screen" it is called you are in terror of the dr as if you are 2. If you can give -10 stars that would be a gracious rating. From the first visit to the last the situation and story with what needed done changed each time. I read all the reviews prior to consultation and initial wisdom tooth extraction, was a little nervous but the second i walked in i was greeted with happy receptionist who made me feel at ease. Today i told them how nervous i was and the front lady calmed me down and told it would all be ok. Dr Wirth was amazing during both visits. Very kind and made sure I understood everything that was going on.. possible side effects, and how id feel the following 24 hours. Had some problems with my insurance but the lady on the phone told me some steps i could take so i wouldnt have to cancel. I was a crying mess and she helped me! I had been in pain for months and This team really did a great job of helping me. I am so grateful! Thank you all for being so kind in a nerve racking situation for me! Highly, highly recommend! They were very accommodating from the start. I was able to schedule an appointment fast (this was so important as I just returned to work and I have a 5 month old so was working with time/schedule constraints, needing to get done before my insurance switched) Once my prior authorization from my current insurance came in (faster than expected) we were able to move up my oral surgery date. He also worked with my specialists before surgery to ensure I was receiving the best care. I have an irrational fear of dentists and he put my mind at ease and explained everything thoroughly. I have been a pain management patient for 17 years with multiple spinal cord conditions, needing new surgeries, and it’s been about 14 hours post op and I’m not in any pain, just a little discomfort as expected. (Past surgeries have been a nightmare to regulate). He did an absolute amazing job. Best experience I’ve ever had. Thank you so much! Highly, highly recommend! Then he rolled his eyes at me because I didn’t remember my dentists name. Then gave me the 3rd degree on why I have liver failure. Then later proceeded to say WOW! Your on a lot of medications. Wow u even take this medication. Your not my doctor your a dentist please refrain from making comments on somebodies medical when you don’t even know their situation. This review is mainly to help anyone who has to see Dr. Wirth due to limited dentists available that will take IL Medicaid for wisdom teeth removal. It is based on 2 experiences - my consultation from October 2019 and my procedure from November 2019. I was provided 2 dentist’s names over the phone when contacting my insurance on who would take my insurance for the procedure. I looked up reviews prior to my appointment and am reviewing now for anyone who feels stressed over getting their wisdom teeth removed based on the reviews they see here. I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Wirth in late November 2019. About a month prior I had my consultation. This was a fine experience, I had my x-rays done and Dr. Wirth answered my many questions. Not once during my questions did I feel rushed or that he was annoyed to answer them. He gave thorough, no bs answers. He was very upfront when answering my concerns. This alleviated some of my fears because it was apparent that he is quite knowledgeable. When you’re nervous, you want someone competent doing your procedure. After the consultation, make sure you follow whatever instructions he gives you prior to your procedure. And make sure to follow the instructions on how to show up the day of. Pay attention to these things, and ask questions if you need clarity. The day of my procedure was fine. He didn’t talk much other than to tell me what he was doing when administering whatever drugs are used for the conscious sedation. I remember prior to him coming into the room, the technician/assistant that was in there answered some of my last minute questions and was nice. She helped calm my nerves a bit. And to my knowledge, everything went fine and after the procedure, I had no further complications, or at least nothing that I had noticed. I followed the directions given after the procedure and never had dry socket, which I was worried about. There is a commonality in these reviews that don’t question Dr. Wirth’s competency, but his bedside manner. It is for that reason that I give him 4 stars. Point blank, his bedside manner was not consistently good. For example, at the time of my consultation, I was 25 years old. It was about a week or 2 until my 26th birthday. He referred to me as 27 - not a big deal, at first glance of my DOB that makes sense. But once or twice, in reference to my age, he said I was pushing 30. I don’t recall his tone as overtly rude, but speaking to patients in that manor isn’t conducive to building a rapport with your patients. Again, *this doesn’t impact his competency.* I think that’s super important for patients to remember if nervous about having to see him. I am not certain what, or if, anything has changed since late November 2019. If the women working up front are still the same, they are excellent. Each interaction I had with them, they were very helpful and kind. And if you’re nervous to have dental work done by Dr. Wirth after reading these reviews, but you have to go to him for whatever reason, I do think you’re in fine hands. Don’t expect to be coddled, and communicate clearly. Listen to what he says and make sure you understand it and you will be fine. In response to Tiffany Beldowski I am said child's mother, I can tell you from the get go everyone was RUDE! We were referred there for a tooth extraction from Rock Falls. My son sitting in the chair (who is already terrified of dentists in the first place) had to sit there and watch this dentist embarass and upset his mother to the point of tears! This dentist is one of the few who takes medical card, that being said he tried to push me out the door without doing anything because he wanted us to pay five thousand dollars for a root canal. If I had five thousand I would do it but I dont! So I let my child decide whether or not he wanted the tooth pulled now or to wait for a minimum of 6 months to get into a dentist who takes our insurance who can fix it. This dentist tried to stop me from talking to him several times. I have tears streaming. My son is crying because he sees me upset and this tooth is causing him extreme pain. He chose to have it pulled because he couldnt eat without being in pain. This dentist and his staff were so condescending, dont waste your time calling them or going to their office. I had 5 teeth pulled on 7/5/2018. Before I was put under they did not give me the choice to go over my allergies again. I figured that I would be okay since we went over them in my initial visit. WRONG. They tried to give me NORCO for the pain. I'm allergic to norco. Luckily my fiance remembered that and told the nurse. So, you would think they would offer me something else for pain right? WRONG again! I had 5 teeth pulled with some stitches and they sent me on my way with absolutely nothing for the pain. Here we are 2 days later and I am in so much pain I can't even open my mouth let alone eat or talk. Called the office yesterday. All they had to say was take some ibuprofen. Yep did that! Guess what! No change! I will NOT be going back there or referring anyone else there. They clearly couldn't care any less about me or the pain they caused. I don’t recommend Dr. Kurtis Wirth’s office unless you don’t have a choice like I didn’t (he’s was the only one covered by my insurance.) The two desk ladies were very nice but once you step out of the waiting room you get an entirely different staff. I had two wisdom teeth pulled this morning and the nurse who brought me back was very rude, snippy when I asked questions, and was obviously annoyed by my anxiety. Dr. Wirth was putting in my IV and I was just suggesting that’d he put it in my left arm because it’s usually a successful stick. He responded, “I’m not over on that side am?” So after that I just kept my mouth shut. I was worried about the surgery in itself because I’ve never been put under before and they just seemed like they didn’t care or even try to comfort with me. Then I started to wake up and started to talk, I was instructed rudely to not talk a couple times and when it was time to go the nurse kept yelling at me that I needed to get up, like cool it lady I just had anesthesia. I was rolled out while it was sprinkling by the nurse in a wheelchair. My fiancé got me in the car and was trying to double check take care home instructions with her and she told him “You can read your papers. I don’t have time for this.” We won’t be returning! I just had my wisdom teeth out today from Dr. wirth and this guys was terrible. To start he was very rude as well as the desk ladies. Seems that they do not care how they treated there patients not telling me when I was being sedated or how I’d feel after and the after feeling was terrible they over medicated me leading to getting wheeled out in a wheelchair while I was still heavily sedated and still nauseated/dizzy. None the less I have multiple Bruises from where they put the IV in. I DONT RECOMMENDED ANYONE I just had my wisdom teeth out today from Dr. wirth and this guys was terrible. He took my daughters wisdom teeth out. First they billed the insurance before the work was even done. Then the nurse was extremely rude to my daughter about wearing a long sleeved shirt. The dr also cut the side of her cheek and didn’t tell us or stitch it. As of a week after she still has a big hole in her cheek. My current dentist had pulled 3 teeth with no problem. He used plenty of numbing agent and waited a long time for it to take effect before starting extraction. The last tooth I needed pulled had very crooked deep roots. He thought I might have to be put under to do it. He referred me out to have that tooth pulled. That is how I wound up at Wirths office. At Wirths office the girl who took me back was extremely rude. Wirth was more rude and unprofessional. Neither one of them talk or explain things. They're very short. I had the same back tooth pulled on the other side of my mouth 25 years earlier with a different dentist. He had to stop and numb it 3 times during extraction. It hurt so bad. I told Wirth that but he didn't seem to care. He chose to do the procedure with me being awake. He used no way near enough numbing agent (unlike my regular dentist.) Only 1 1/2 shots just in front of a very difficult ,troublesome tooth. He did not let the numbing agent take effect. He waited only 8 or 9 minutes, sitting by my side saying not a word and then began to drill and saw (as he told me.) I was in unbearable pain. Groaning and wincing from pain only got them mad. They're only response was she saying in a perturbed manner, " Keep your tongue up and over." He jerked my jaw towards him and said in an annoyed manner, "Look over here." It was a horrible, painful, nightmarish experience. *** Wirth and his assistant were very cold, rude, scary and inpatient during the extraction. They had no concern for the excrutiating pain I was in. No compassion or empathy whatsoever. """"STAY FAR AWAY""""" ****** I have no need to respond to you Wirth. All the other many , many negative posts here says it all******* My current dentist had pulled 3 teeth with no problem. My Stepson had to get his tooth pulled and this is where he was referred. We were greeted by the very nice receptionist and his mom began to fill out his paperwork. So far so good right... wrong!!! The lady that came to get him was so rude. His mom went back with him and came out a little later very upset. They bullied her the whole time saying they didn’t want to pull the tooth. His regular dentist sent him there so I don’t know why it was even questioned. When a child goes to the dentist it’s already scary, add your mom being badgered and seeing her cry right before you get a tooth ripped out of your mouth. Not very professional at all. Go somewhere else this place is awful and their employees need to learn proper communication skills! My Stepson had to get his tooth pulled and this is where he was referred. Im not one to make reviews but I am the type of person TERRIFIED of the dentist let alone never had any type of surgery or put under IV sedation. After reading these review it just made me feel even more nervous about everything so I wanted to talk about my experience... Im 20 I got my Wisdom teeth out today and my mom brought me so I could have a ride home. A few months back I had my consultation we went over the basoc things I needed to know and about the surgery and my xray. The day before my big day (yesterday) a nurse called and reminded me of everything . She was super nice. Now when I got there today the front desk lady (not sure of her name ) greeted my mom and I and was extremely nice she even helped calm my nerves and told me the best places for shakes after and good things to eat while recovering. The dr. Even came out by the front for something and asked if I was ready and that it wont be that bad and assured me someone will be up to get me. Next a assistant brought me back she told me what to do and got me in the chair. She could tell I was nervous and told me everything was going to be okay and how long they've been taking teeth out etc etc she answered all my questions I had . Next the Doctor came in .I think he asked me a few questions about my medications I take and it freaked me out having the dr not say a lot to me. I started crying and the assistant was reassuring me which helped a lot. Thats probably how they do it so the dr. can focus. They hooked the IV and they were putting different stuff in and then he said okay ill be right back and we will talk in 10 minutes next thing I know they were numbing me with a needle I think and I woke up a few times after surgery . the assistant asked if I was awake and ready to go.I just felt groggy but fully aware of whats going on. She helped me out and to my mom. I think she may have even helped me to the car. And we were off to get my medications and a smoothie . :) I had absolutley nothing to worry about and put it off for no reason. I have minor pain right now. I left there around 11 maybe and the numbing is now wearing off but I took my medicine so it should go away. I just wanted to share my story and how it wasnt that bad and nobody was extremely rude because the reviews honestly freaked me out. Not saying that what happened to them didnt actually happen but this is my story. But hey look I DID IT ???? This guy is hands down one of the best Dentists I've ever had. I have some special needs which he accommodated with care and consideration; and his expertise is obvious. If you bother to check; his qualifications make the others look like schoolboys. Dr Wirth and his staff probably don't need my piddly 5 Stars, but I wanted to balance other reviews here, which I just don't get. When I asked a few intelligent questions, I got complete, carefull explanations from him and attentive help from the girls up front. Wish there was a 10 Star option. Steve E. After seeing my regular dentist for an abscessed tooth, I was referred to Dr. Wirth for an extraction. My dentist was not comfortable with performing this emergency procedure, which made me a little uneasy. My dentist called Dr. WIrth's office and they were able to get me in immediately that day. Upon arrival the two ladies at the front desk were extremely nice and sympathetic of my extreme pain. They assured me Dr. Wirth was the best and my pain would subside in two mins after he numbed me. They took me back and once I was sitting in the chair, I asked him "Is it a bad one?" He said "No." I asked him "How long will it take to pull the tooth?" he said "A couple of minutes." I found his confidence comforting. He gave me my shots as soon as I sat down. I was in heaven after days of no sleep and unbearable pain. Next, he guided me through the procedure by showing me what to expect pressure wise. After that he gave me more shots to make sure the area was numb, and it was. Next thing I know he asked me to bite down on some gauze. I asked "Are we done?" He said "Yup" he proceeded to explain how he had to drill my tooth into two pieces as so not to disrupt my other tooth's root system. After thanking him numerous times I was then shown to the front desk. I was given complete instructions on what to do and what not to do. I was also consulted on my medications he prescribed. I was in Dr. Wirth's office a total of 20 minutes. To sum this up, this guy is a no nonsense dentist. He was very professional and very confident. He didn't have cartoons on, stuffed animals to squeeze, dogs to pet, or even a sticker for me when I was all done. Thats ok though because at my age I appreciated his professionalism. Thank you for the great experience, it went so fast I almost missed it! After seeing my regular dentist for an abscessed tooth, I was referred to Dr. Wirth for an extraction. I was a bit reluctant to carry out my appointment after reading the negative reviews, but I went, I had to. No issues with the front desk at all, the lady was courteous and friendly. Had x-rays taken, again no problems. Talked over x-rays with doctor, agreed on a plan, and out came the teeth. He told me when I would be feeling pressure, or pushing/pulling etc. until he was done. I received the after care instructions for home, and enough meds to keep my pain down for a couple days while healing. I had a positive, cut and dry, no nonsense, dentist experience. I recommend Dr. Wirth and his employees. I was a bit reluctant to carry out my appointment after reading the negative reviews, but I went, I had to. I had a consultation with Dr. Wirth and his staff. From the moment the MA took me for xrays, she was passively aggressive and rude. Then the Dr came and he was quiet, careless and just flat out acts like he hates what he does. He acted as if I was taking up his time, he scoffed at me (like literally laughed), he argued with me on something so incredibly small and he was very dismissive when it came to my concerns. I left crying my eyes out. I highly highly do not recommend.

My wife and I went to this oral surgery office because she needed a tooth removed.. The MA that took her back was extremely rude to my wife like we’ve never experienced before. The dentist was also obnoxiously rude. When he asked why she was there and after my wife had told him because of a tooth removal he rolled his eyes and didn’t walk her through the process. The MA after taking her vitals swatted my wife’s hand away. I wouldn’t even give this place a 1 star due to us feeling unsafe.

I’m not sure who was more rude between the ladies at the front desk or the dentist himself.... I first went in to take my step daughter in for a consultation.... I’m not sure why but they had a case of beer sitting on this table in the back for everyone to see.. The doctor treated me as if I wasn’t stupid and when I asked questions a lot of his answers were “I don’t know” he was more worried about telling me what my step daughters insurance covered or didn’t cover and how much public aid paid him... I wasn’t there for that nor is it any of my business... you accepted to take this insurance so your gonna have to deal with all the good or bad it comes with it... you really need to work on how to speak to people... the ladies in the front I must of learn everything about your lives that day just a ear full of about a grandson and trips coming up so much talking and so little work I’m surprise this office is still open I’m not sure who was more rude between the ladies at the front desk or the dentist himself.... I originally called this office around oct of 2017 to have my 4 wisdom teeth extracted. I set my apt for December due to me being a teacher assistant and tht is when we would go on winter break. I am not one to miss work and I needed time to heal. I was never educated that the first initial apt would be a consultation or I would have set tht apt sooner/ However I was made aware of the $50 that would be due for my first apt. This fee was communicated as a deductible then changed into a evaluation fee. While working with staff at the office over several phone calls my insurance was exchanged and supposedly ultrasound would be sent over for the day of my apt. Arriving to my apt nothing had been done and the staff did not know why I was there. I had to call give all my insurance information again and explain why I was in the office. Due to this I had to have a X-ray done that was not covered by my insurance. Although staff lead me to believe it would be. I was quoted several different prices with my insurance totaling around $2100 to have the 4 extractions Done. When looking over the bill I noticed extra iv sensations has been added. Seems to me that staff wanted me to pay more. One recommendation staff gave me was to use my full 1500 yearly insurance maximum to cover two extractions and then return in January to do the same thing to have the other two extractions done. Had I done this any other dental work wouldve been out of pocket. The attitudes I encountered are disgusting. I felt completely mislead by this office and cheated out of money and time. Dr. Wirth had a stained shirt and halfway tucked in shirt meeting him. He made me aware of the possibilities of having a black eye and nerve damage. Due to my experience I decided to not trust the practice of this office. I now owe 146.00 for an ultrasound that could have been sent over from my orthodontist and I paid $50 for a consultation from Hell. Please save your time and go to Dr. Shae McCue at rock river oral surgery. Dr. Shae McCue office accepted my insurance and my surgery was a breeze . Please run from this money laundering office.. Had oral surgery done almost a week ago... Walking in the appointment, he was very condescending and rude. Just stood there with not one ounce of care for his patient. Kind of creepy.
