Wanted to pass some feedback regarding gamma tiles, surgery at Barrows Pheonix and Dr Kris Smith. My 48 year old Husband with butterfly GBM had his 2nd recurrence middle of January this year 20 months post diagnosis in the deeper areas of right frontal lobe near right basal ganglia. Nuero oncologists had given up hope for further treatment. Husbnad had already gone through SOC, Optune and immunotherapy keytruda with TKIs so not a candidate for trials. Husbnad started having swallowing issues and started losing some mobility on left side and hemiplegia (left side neglect). He was still speaking and communicating and right side functional. Having exhausted all these options, we checked with barrows Dr Kris Smith for surgical options. Though disease was extensive , Dr Smith thought he may be able to do a salvage surgery for husband and did explain there was a small risk of stroke and other issues. Unfortunately, surgery lead to husbnad not waking up completely from surgery , complete left side dysfunction, hydrocephalus, unable to communicate, brain infection and a stroke. The days following surgery were nightmare and husbnad passed away a month following the recurrence surgery. Took barrows 3 weeks to figure out husband had an extensive brain infection which is unacceptable. Point I am trying to make ..for extensive disease progression, be very cautious when considering surgery with or without gamma tiles.. Dr Kris Smith is kind and experienced and wanted to help my husband but likely went too aggressive with surgery ..didn’t use ALA or functional mri during surgery ..,looking back, perhaps that could have avoided the aggressive resection and further complications.

Dr. Smith gave my wife the life she has wanted for so long, he is a great surgeon and cares about people.

Dr Smith performed my surgery in 2016. I still have small seizures, however we are going forward and exploring some other options, including another surgery. My son had 2 brain surgeries with Dr. Kris Smith. Prior to that, all the symptoms my son exhibited were dismissed by ER doctors and other practitioners by saying he needed behavioral meds.."his shunt is working, he needs medication for his behaviors" etc. Well, after months of behaviors, spiked fevers that would mysteriously disappear, and sleeping about 2 hours per night, we ended up in the ER at St. Joe's. Twice in one month. So many images (MRI, CT of the brain) had been taken over several months that I was able to speak with Alma in Dr. Smith's office to see if she could retrieve the imaging and let Dr. Smith review it. I was at my wits end...something WAS VERY wrong with my son. Long story short, she did get the imaging and showed to Dr. Smith, who in turn had us come into the office. My son's shunt was 17 years old...and though working...it was working IMPROPERLY. He was able to see the exact problems (two of them) and surgery needed to be done to correct both situations. I'm thrilled to say that this man is the kindest, most caring surgeon I've ever come across...and we've met many over the years. Dr. Smith performed a Chiari malformation decompression surgery and 3 months later replaced the 17 year old shunt! Our son is so much better and happier now. Back to his sweet self! All because this wonderful man took the time when his assistant went to him and showed him the images. His office is top notch and he is brilliant and kind. When I was a pre-teen (about 20 years ago) this doctor took an interest in my case. By the kindness of his heart, he removed a debilitating brain tumor from the right side of my brain. I have to thank him for everything he has done for me. I now have two daughters and look back at how much he improved my life. I wouldn’t be here today without him. Dr. Smith is a brilliant and caring surgeon and he absolutely saved my mom's life. He always takes time to explain things to the families and makes patients feel heard and cared for.

My surgeon was Dr. Kris Smith, he gave me my life back. I had normal pressure hydrocephalus and he cured me. I am walking without stick and do not feel as if I am going to fall. He is fantastic. Also his staff is top notch, I am sure If I forget to mention someone, Kim in recovery, very nice, very caring, Justin on the floor who was catering to my every wish and helped me tremendously in getting going again, Julio, Mary and Will, all top notch and so helpful, thank you Will for helping me get out, I was up and walking the very next day. Dr Kris Smith is. A really good nuro doctor listens to all your concerns and answers all your questions he walks you thru on what type of procedure and how long the healing process will take I AM VERY HAPPY WITH HAVING DR KRIS SMITH AS MY PROVIDER

I called to the office of Dr. Kris Smith to schedule appointment. They told me that I should fax them referral, insurance and MRI. I did it. Nobody called me after that. When I called back week later, they said "you need to provide the films". Which been surprise for me, because receptionist didn’t told me about it on initial call. Two weeks wasted. Please respect your patient’s time, please fix your process. Please tell the patient what they need to provide to get the appointment.

I trust Dr. Smith implicitly. He allowed me to be able to smile again on both sides of my face. I am not in excruciating pain from that. I will forever be indebted to him and his talent, skill and wisdom, but mostly his humble manor. Impressive man who will some day be a legend.

I am a 12 year brain tumor survivor because of Kris Smith. He is brilliant, experienced, and the kindest and most gentle human being I have ever met. I am not only his patient, but I am an RN with 16 years of ICU experience, living and working in Phoenix, Arizona. It is valuable to find out what the OR nurses say about a surgeon. They say he is calm, meticulous, focussed, and has the stamina for these long and complex cases. They also call him a "friend". I say , "I am grateful".

Friendly and caring. Explained the surgery risks and went over all of my tests with me. Attentive and always professional. Post surgery met with my family and explained everything from the surgery. Highly Recommend.

Caring, kind, compassionate and meticulous. We had an excellent outcome with Dr. Smith. His staff was also incredibly helpful. We also had a rare situation: my mom was admitted into the hospital with a rare spinal infection at the exact same time that my husband was recovering from surgery. Although Dr. Smith was not my mom's doctor, he and his entire team sought out my mom's room and met with her and took the time to review her case to reassure us that she had the best team working on her.

Saved our sister's life. Brilliant surgeon. Would highly recommend! I am an RN with over 40 years in healthcare and what he did for her was extraordinary. FYI: this is the person that Mayo Clinic refers to when they have difficult or inoperable cases.
