About Kevin Varner
Reviews for Kevin Varner
Absolutely atrocious office staff. I called and scheduled an appointment (seeking second professional opinion) after having a broken ankle confirmed at an urgent care and another surgeon's office. In advance, it was advised by Tammy that I needed to provide the x-rays prior to the appointment. Additionally, they sent an email requesting all patient care information in advance of the appointment or to print and bring it arriving 30 minutes in advance. I sent them all of the patient care information, the x-ray images, the entire contents of an additional set of x-rays and a CT scan for them to access in advance of the appointment. No response to any of my transmittals. Fast forward to the day of the appointment and Tammy calls asking if I had a CT scan done and if I had provided the CD to them. I said I sent all of this information to them (her included). They insisted I didn't physically, mind you I'm on one foot right now, bring in the CDs so they must cancel my appointment. I reiterated they have all information. I offered to show up an hour early instead of just 30 minutes to my appointment if it would help. Offered accessing it via the provider portal. They insisted to cancel/reschedule the appointment. It feels as though they try to go out of their way to be difficult rather than be helpful. It's unfortunate because Dr. Varner is a well-respected surgeon, but I cannot see a doctor who's office fumbles basic paperwork and accessing info available to them in advance of appointments. I will seek a second opinion elsewhere. UPDATE: After posting this review I received a response to call and discuss. Below are some details of that follow on conversation. They wanted to discuss the cancellation in more detail and express their sincerity in not being able to accommodate. Overall the conversation was pleasant, but felt insincere in many ways. Outcome wise, it was a waste of time and nothing was done by them. When I mentioned: 1) Nobody on the email distribution ever corresponded or called to all of the information provided in advance to voice any concerns. Their response was more or less, we are sorry for that and we should do better. 2) the initial appt was made when I only had x-rays at an urgent care facility performed. I had no report for these x-rays and the appt was perfectly acceptable at that time for Dr. Varner to see me. However, in the week I waited to see Dr. Varner I had a CT scan done by another surgeon (who was more timely in seeing me initially). When I went to be helpful and provide this to Dr. Varner's office, all of a sudden, it's an issue for Dr. Varner to see me without this information. This information was not made available to me until the day before (Sunday) of my appointment to which I sent another email. 3. I could have just appeared for my appointment without mentioning the CT scan, the response was he would have been very upset. Really? 4. My offering of coming in even earlier for the appt, their response was it's not as simple as "popping it in and copying the information." This despite the fact I witnessed two other surgeon offices able to quickly process the information on the spot. She advised they must provide the info to radiology who then uploads it, and only then does the doctor have access to it. Sounds like an overly rigid policy. As a side note, one doctor I saw, the assistant popped it right there in the room for the surgeon to review. 5. My offering that they could access the information via the provider portal who performed the CT scan. No response, this was ignored. 6. How do others provide information to the doctor in advance? Their response was most will overnight mail it to their office. Color me a skeptic that people are actually doing this, let alone being ok with it. 7. Ability for patients to upload information directly to their own portal. Their response is it's being assessed by Methodist, but nothing available now. Well Methodist, as a person adept in technology and friends in the medical technology field, there's plenty on the market.

Dr varner was highly recommended for the ankle surgery and was very informative about options the replacement went well and after 17 days I was in a walking boot a putting weight on ankle just came from follow up visit 60 days later walked in to appointment in lace up shoe with a slight limp so pleased with procedure thanks to Dr Varner and his staff. The highest rating possible to you all
Amazing doctor staff are very kind

Dr. Varner was fantastic at my latest visit with him. His staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable as well. I tripped over the weekend and hurt my big toe. He immediately knew the problem and helped me address it. It was feeling better the next day. I highly recommend him!
Not Good. Definitely a good salesman but definitely not forthright. According to other doctors opinions, the outcome was not a possibility with his surgical procedures. Very disappointed in surgery and him.
Dr Varner performed my ankle replacement. The ankle is great. Pain is gone. Very good at explaining the process. I recommend him for any ankle issues
Surgery 12/8/2021 Excellent care, communication, and skill Thank oh!
The services were great and everyone was welcoming and caring except a receptionist by the name of Karen. She was rude impatient and almost made me reconsider trying another place
I love Dr. Varner . I have been going to Dr. V since I was out of high school and now in my 40’s . When he was at McGregor clinic and now at methodist . He is very respectful, jokester when he neededs to be and very gracious gentleman! Dr. V explain always explains his pro and his con! He makes you feel at home and reassuring about the out come! In fact I recommend him to everyone! Stay Bless Dr. V!
I've heard that Dr. Varner is an excellent doctor and I wish that I would have found him sooner as I probably wouldn't be having the issues today that I am. However, I basically went to him for a 2nd opinion following a surgery from another doctor that was still causing me issues and he kind of dismissed it as "it takes time to heal" - even though it had been over a year since my previous surgery. I would think that after that long, the healing should be as good as it gets or we need to look into my options to relieve my pain. The wait in his office is not acceptable. I took off of work to make my appointment and yet he kept me waiting over an hour. Doctors need to learn that a patients time is just as valuable as theirs is. Don't overbook your appointments.
I would give a 0 star if I could for the staff!! Who knows about the doctor, never got to see him. Obviously, if the staff is this bad then maybe the doctor just doesn't care...who knows!! I tried for about 5 months to get an appointment. I had to jump through multiple hoops with gathering medical records and multiple calls. I got NOTHING!!! This is the most inept doctors office EVER!!! I would give a 0 star if I could for the staff!! Who knows about the doctor, never got to see him. Dr Varner literally saved my leg. After falling from a great height I was left with one knee shattered into about a dozen pieces. Dr Varner was able to reconstruct the fragments and return my leg to full functionality.
Excellent, understanding and recovery results for torn tendons, ligaments and or muscles in my foot. It has been 3+ months since surgery and I am progressing steadily and doing better every week. I like his explanations, concern and analysis of my surgery and recovery. Easy to talk with and understandable in his explanations. Looking forward to full recovery and being able to walk w/o pain or issues.
Dr. Varner completely showed just how incompetent he is. He fused my foot wrong to where it was going outwards and I had to walk like a duck. My husband told him that my foot wasn't right and he continued arguing with my husband. We completely put our faith in him trusting that he knew what he was doing. I had to have several more surgeries to my foot and ankle that he destroyed for me. Thanks to him I will never walk right again and my life has completely changed. If I can change just one person from making the same mistake as I did by choosing this Physician just to save yourself from the incompetence that I experienced.
He is an excellent surgeon. I had my foot repaired in October. They have taken excellent care of me.
So, after I tried to make an appointment to see Dr. Varner with his staff member Tammy and couldn't, I asked to speak to the office manager. She said she would have her call me. She didn't return my call, so I called and did get to speak to the office manager, Teresa. She apologized and said she would try to take care of me. So, she proceeds to tell me that I can only see Dr. Varner's PA. I told her I wanted to see Dr. Varner. She said Stephen is really good, Dr. Varner trained him, he is who you will see. She was not budging on her desire for me to see the PA. She then asked me why I was coming. I told her what I suspected were ganglion cysts on both feet. She asked which one hurts the most and I said about the same. She said we can only do one foot at a time, so which one. I asked if we could do xrays on both feet and then decide. She said no, one xray, one foot at a time, these are the rules. What kind of place is this? Is my insurance getting milked for all they can or what?

Great, knowledgeable, professional and experienced doctors and staff. Above that GREAT person who REALLY care about their patients.
Dr Varner installed the STAR Total Ankle replacement on my left ankle in March 2018. I am thrilled with the results. I wasn''t sure what to expect. Previously I had never heard of ankle replacement. My left leg was seriously broken years earlier and the cartilage to the ankle was damaged. The joint became arthritic and I developed a severe supination problem (left ankle rolled outward). Even standing or walking was painful. I was told replacement or fusing were the only options. I wanted to be able to walk the golf course again so I chose replacement. After much research on the internet and meeting with multiple doctors, I was referred to Dr Varner. He was friendly, knowledgeable and took time to answer all my questions. He told me he might have to do some additional work to the bones in the foot due to the prolonged supination. Once in surgery he removed the rear section of my heel and moved to the outside and shortened the long bone to my big toe to lower my arch in addition to doing the ankle replacement. Other than a burning sensation and the odd shooting pain, I never felt any pain. I never once needed pain medication after the nerve block drip ran its course. At 4 weeks I was in a walking boot and at the six week followup (May 1) I saw Dr Varner again for the first time after surgery. My ankle swelling was less than it has been for the previous 4 years. He said it looked great and after another 6 weeks in a walking boot I could start getting back to normal. I explained there was a golf tournament at the end of May I wanted to play in. He said ....OK. I said I'd need to practice before then. He said .....OK. I said practicing in a walking boot was not good. He said, Get rid of the boot. I said....OK!!! I played in twice in mid May and our team won the tournament a week later. My ankle still needs some physical therapy to regain all the range of motion I want. I am pain free in the joint and much more stable. I can't thank Dr Varner enough for the great work he did and for getting me back to a normal gait and back to golfing! He and all his staff are very good at what they do. If you've been suffering with ankle problems, go see Dr Varner. After waiting 3 months for an appointment with Dr Varner it turned out to be with the PA, x-ray of foot didn't reveal any problems , was advised to use topical ointment, but pain still exist, when I tried to schedule another appointment would be August, or April 20 with the PA.. I have never heard of anything like this to see a Dr.
Good experience with Dr Varner. He knows the foot. However, when making an appointment make sure you see Dr Varner and not his PA. The front office will try to bait an switch you, and try to charge you as if you saw the Dr.
Great experience
My daughter had osteochondritis dissecans in the talus bone of her foot at 16 yrs old. Dr. Varner and his staff was amazing with the surgery and the recovery process.
I had a great experience with Dr. Varner and his entire staff. They're the absolute best. I broke my heel bone -- one of the worst bones to break. Dr. Varner gave me fulsome and honest advice on the difficulty of the fracture and the road to recovery. He did surgery and fully repaired the bone. The man is an artist. I ride my bike and run a lot so I was very worried about how my injury would affect my lifestyle. After surgery, I was back on my bike within 2 months. I was able to run again about 4 months later, which is much better than I originally expected with such a horrible injury. Now, about 10 months later, I am able to do everything I could before the injury. Consider yourself lucky if you are able to get Dr. Varner. I would recommend him to anyone. Dr. Varner is by far the absolute best!! Thanks to him, I can walk again. He performed a complete ankle replacement after another doctor messed up which resulted in the complete loss of cartilage. His bedside manner is amazing and his office staff went above and beyond to assist me. I've had my new ankle for 4 years now and it's still going strong. Do whatever it takes to see Dr. Varner because he really is that good. Not only is he an excellent surgeon but he actually cares about his patients--he called me on a Saturday morning to go over my MRI results and to see how I was doing from a recent surgery he performed.
Dr. Varner is great but his staff leaves a lot to be desired. Month+ wait times to see the doctor. I arrived at 9 am for an 11 am surgery, waited in the hospital bed hooked up to an IV and heart monitors for 6 hours before the doctor could get to me due to a staff mistake. I received no apology. Came back for follow up and his PA Stephen was incredibly rude and did not voluntarily provide any information. I had to ask questions multiple times to get an answer. Not great for all of my money.
Dr Varner performed what I thought would be routing bunion surgery on my right foot. Although the surgery seemed to go fine, within 3 months, my toe turned inward to a greater extent than previously and my foot is as deformed, if not more, than before. Upon examining this, Dr. Varner simply shrugged his shoulders and said "Gee, I didn't expect that to happen". He said the only remedy was more surgery, possibly more extensive than the first. Suggest you go elsewhere. Not happy.
Dr. Varner is excellent. He has a wonderful bedside manner. He makes you believe he has all the time in the world for you while in the exam room, taking time to answer questions and explain things. Now actually getting through to make an appointment may take two to three calls minimally. Forget about leaving a message...no one will call you back either! Dr. Varner is excellent. DrVarner an his staff is awesome i love them!!He was there when i needed him awesome docter the BEST!!
Thanks to Dr. Varner I'm back in the game. My Achilles rupture is barely a memory. Varner is an awesome surgeon!
There is a reason he is the foot and ankle specialist for all of the major Houston athletes. Professional, efficient, caring, and most of all extremely good at what he does. Best doc in town.
I will not let anyone touch my feet except Dr Varner. i have a deformed foot due to polio, he corrected it therefore my pain is a lot less. Just do not argue with him about when the cast needs to come off because he knows what is best.
Dr. Varner is awesome he is the best at his craft. He is like an artist of perfectionism...the best foot Dr. around, he is honest, caring and tries to make sure you are back on the 2 feet you came to him with but in better shape.
Excellent bedside manner, explained things very well and easy to understand, explains all options and not just the easiest solution, friendly and courteous at all times, friendly and helpful staff
Dr. Varner is an amazing surgeon! He did a bunion surgery on me this spring, and and the recovery was so easy and very pain free. I am extremely happy with the outcome! I recently saw Dr. Varner's PA, Stephen, after I injured my other foot in an exercising accident. Stephen is excellent too. He helped me get me on the path to healing. I have recommended Dr. Varner to many of my friends and family. He is tremendously talented and really cares about his patients!
Very caring, thorough, excellent bedside manner! Everyone is EXTREMELY nice!!!
I have seen Dr. Varner several times. Years ago, he seemed to be a caring doctor. But seeing him now, ten years later, he does not appear to care. In years past, he has had a reputation as being a very good foot surgeon. Beware other surgeons in his practice at Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, as I have known people who had very bad experiences from surgery with extremely indifferent surgeons there. I was one of these unfortunate patients recently and I am permanentently damaged.
Excellent all around.
Staff is horrid
He did a Big foot surgery on me February the 15th of this year!!Him an his staff is Awesome!!Best docter i ever had!!
Dr Varner is not only qualified, he is kind and comforting. His staff, however, is extremely rude, unprofessional and uncaring. I have never experienced so little care from staff. I will NEVER NEVER NEVER use Dr Varner again because of his staff. I will refer all of our patients elsewhere. Tasha in particular is a nasty and unkind woman who would rather argue and interrupt than listen. I have never felt so upset, offended and unimportant.
I was dealing with a knee problem and asked my orhthopedic about foot pain that had been occurring for over two years. He referred me to Dr. Varner. I was very pleased with the professionalism and friendliness of Dr. Varner and his staff. Numerous persons have told me that I was seeing the best doctor for foot surgery. My neurectomy was scheduled promptly and occurred earlier today. I have minimal discomfort and no need for any pain medication. I highly recommend Dr. Varner.

Dr. Varner has always been there to help me with any needs I have.Being an double amputee he has been very compassionate and helpful.
I've had two ankle surgeries with Dr. Varner (arthroscopic & OATS) and I'm going back for a neuroma surgery. He is EXCELLENT! Very caring, knowledgeable and professional. With that said, it takes a long time to get an appointment. Once you have the appointment, plan on it taking a very long time to get a parking spot in the garage. His support team is great, but they also take a long time to get back to you. It's just the cost of going to one of the best docs, since he has so many patients.
I arrived for my first apt. 20 minutes late because valet parking was overwhelmed. Receptionist informed me my appointment was cancelled. I spoke on the phone to Teresa, office manager. She said I should have self parked. I explained that I was a disabled senior citizen and only used valet. She informed me that cancellation was approved by Varner. I believe that she was overstepping her authority and asked to speak with him. She refused. I will not return and go to Texas Orthopedic Hospita
Dr. Varner performed surgery on my son's foot. He is a competitive athlete at the University of Texas so it was imperative that we this issue was taken care of or his athletic career was over. Issue was a Navicular stress fracture. Dr. Varner is the best...hands down. Surgery was over one year ago and foot is perfect and pain free.
Oustanding foot doctor! Highly Recommended!
He repaired a previously botched surgery on my peroneal tendon and it went beautifully. I'm back to life as usual and couldn't be happier!
DR VARNER'S office cannot seem to answer the phone to make an appointment. I have been trying for months to make a follow up and only get a "hold" loop for hours at a time After several tries and hours on the phone. Dr Varner is great, his scheduling office -NOT SO MUCH!
