Reviews for Jyoti Upadhyay
Dr. Upadhyay is THE BEST urology doctor CHKD has. She can be very upfront and blunt, but its because she is so skilled and knowledgeable. She explains every detailed and draws diagrams to help you understand visually. She saved my daughters left kidney! She was prompt and precise! I wouldn't recommend anyone else for my daughter. Dr. Upadhyay is fantastic! She did a procedure on my son and everything went well. She even spared him extra scars in the process. Definitely recommend! The schedulers, however, are very rude and it is obvious that they do not want to be there. We haven't had a single good experience with their schedulers.
I took my daughter in for kidney stones. She was given HydroCodone for the pain in the ER. When I asked where I could dispose of the remaining pills, she told me to hold on to them in case someone in the future broke their arm. Uh, what? She was awful.
I was very hesitant about about my son seeing this doctor considering her reviews, but I thought I'd give it a shot considering there are only 3 urologists at CHKD and my son was a micropreemie, and this would be the best decision for him at this time. Unfortunately, my experience was awful. When she walked into the exam room, she automatically said, "Let me tell you what I know, and then you can tell me if I'm right." I thought she was a little abrasive by saying that, and a little too forward which made me uncomfortable, but I overlooked it and decided let's move on. I'm here for the concerns of my son right? I need a second opinion and I've been waiting for this appointment for months right? The visit just started to go downhill. She would ask me a question and when I began to answer, she would just cut me off by asking me another question. As the patient, I felt ignored and my concerns were not addressed at all. She kept telling me she didn't receive an op report about my son's surgery. I kept telling her I did provide that, and she kept accusing me that she doesn't have anything, and that I never gave it. Finally, she opened the exam room door, yelled out to the front desk to check for an op report from my son (yelled out his name which is a violation of HIPPA btw), and guess what they came back with? An OP REPORT! She also accused me that I was lying about a procedure another physician did on my son and kept questioning me about who told me that, how do I know that? She then proceeded to say she never read that in the so called op report that I never provided. As she continued reading, guess what she found in the op report? The exact same procedure I was telling her that was performed on my son! She misdiagnosed my son with something that is typically diagnosed at birth. Okay, so you mean to tell me, a micropreemie that stays in the NICU for 4.5 mo and is evaluated by numerous specialists, radiologists, bedside nurses, NP's, and surgeons EVERYDAY for 4.5 mo did not know that diagnosis, followed by his pediatrician that has seen him the very next day of his NICU discharge for 3 years also missed the diagnosis, and me as his mother to notice EVERYTHING on my son's body also missed this diagnosis to only see this doctor (her), and she is the first person to say his condition was something that happened at birth??? That makes absolutely no sense. She gave no explanation to the correlation she was making at how something that happens at birth is now happening after a surgery he received from another physician. I went into shutdown mode because I was so upset and frustrated, I ended up leaving because she wasn't listening to me whatsoever. She offered for me to speak to the practice manager, but I declined because I wanted to leave because we weren't getting anywhere. When I got home, I ended up calling the office to speak to the practice manager anyway and explained my visit with this doctor, my concerns for my son, and my concerns about my treatment. The practice manager said that it would be best that she have Dr. Upadhyay call me back about my medical concerns so that she could further explain the diagnosis. Do you know the practice manage called me back to tell me this doctor declined to speak with me going forward??? I was livid! Never in my life have I EVER experienced this kind of behavior from a physician. Doctors are supposed to put patients first and if a patient has a concern about their diagnosis YOU CALL YOUR PATIENT AND GET OUT OF YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT A DISAGREEMENT IN THE EXAM ROOM. This kind of behavior should not be allowed and I am reporting her to the Medical Board of Virginia Physicians. All I have to say is DO YOUR RESEARCH and just because one Dr says to do something does not mean it has to be done! This is my personal experience, my son had a surgery done with a different urologist, I got to Upadhyay and she made it seem like everyone who had what my son had gets the procedure she was suggesting. I was not comfortable with it so I got a second option from his original surgeon(out of state) then a third opinion from another well known urologist. Both of them strongly suggested NOT to get this procedure done. The 2nd urologist went even further to explain that my son could’ve ended up with the condition he already got corrected, just a different degree. Upadhyay told me she could do the surgery in Sept, I got home and scheduling wanted to perform the surgery 4 days later. She didn’t have any records or information about my sons previous surgery or care...so was she just going to go in blind and “experiment” NO MA’AM. We will definitely not return here under her care. I came to her to perform a procedure on my son. It went very well and she called several times to follow up on his care. She is a straight forward person ,which my come off as difficult, but she cares for her patients a great deal. I would recommend her anytime.
My daughter has been seeing Dr. Upadhyay for 9 years. She has helped her with complicated kidney issues and made it a point to keep an eye on her yearly to ensure she doesn't have any further issues. My family and I are grateful for her expertise and wouldn't go anywhere else for her care.
Dr. Upadhyay has been my daughters Urologist for the past 6 years. She listens to the symptoms and concerns. Dr. Upadhyay's treatments has minimized my child's illness and symptoms. She always informs me, the parents, of the pro's and con's of everything she is prescribing and advises me how to correctly perform the treatment she is prescribing. Upon entering the room Dr. Upadhyay greets me and my nonverbal child. Even though my nonverbal child cannot communicate Dr. Upadhyay treats her as though she would treat any typically developing child. I am thankful for the care Dr. Upadhyay has given my child over the years. Her staff is always helpful and ready to assist us. Dr. Upadhyay's staff has had to appeal insurance denials for my child and they have worked diligently to get the supplies needed for my daughter. I would highly recommend Dr. Upadhyay as she has been a blessing to our family. Dr. Upadhyay has been my daughters Urologist for the past 6 years. She listens to the symptoms and concerns. Dr. Upadhyay is a wonderful doctor. She explains everything very well even with drawings so that you understand what is wrong and how shes going to fix it. She helped diagnose my daughter and was very prompt to help her with her blockage in the ureter of her kidney. It's been 6 months since her surgery and everything is perfect. Dr. Upadhyay is very informative and compassionate. We thank her immensely for helping our little baby girl and family. Dr. Upadhyay is a wonderful doctor. Violated HIPPA by yelling my son's name out to the front desk, unethical, unprofessional, unsatisfactory, no regard for patient's concerns, her picture should be next to the word "disgrace" in the dictionary. I wrote more than 1000 characters about my experience with her as a first time patient, so I shortened it to this, but I am reporting her to the board.
Great doctor. Managed my son’s reflux over many years with great expertise and compassion

Very unprofessional and even came pff a little racist.
She did not listen to me about my daughter's history that was very relevant to her condition. She made assumptions that I was not doing things that I was and have been on top of for over a year. She swore up and down that this "diet" she does will make all the difference but wouldn't discuss it with me and had a nurse come in after the appointment to explain it. The "diet" was how we eat in general so it wasn't going to change the current situation. She didn't even ask what my daughter's diet was. She made way too many assumptions then I am comfortable with. She didn't review any of the previous ultrasounds and made me feel like a bad parent because of her condition when it was the neglect of a previous physician that led to this issue (the part she didn't want to listen to). She jumps into invasive procedures and has a horrible bedside manner. I highly recommend not seeing this physician. I gave her two stars because the procedure she originally performed on my grandson was done well. However, after the surgery we were given erroneous information on post care by someone in her office. This information caused my grandson to have to go back in for another procedure. After the post op check when my daughter was told that my grandson would have to go back in for the second procedure, the doctor was very unprofessional to her and basically told her that it was her fault and that she was doing everything wrong. My daughter tried to explain that she had done everything according to what her staff had told us. The doctor was not compassionate whatsoever and made my daughter feel very bad. Also, after the second procedure was done I tried asking the doctor a question to clarify home instructions and she cut me off midsentence telling me to ask her nurse any questions and she proceeded to walk out of the room and left. I have never had a doctor do that to me before. The only saving grace that doctor has with her, is her nurse Lindsay. Lindsay was very professional and very thorough after the second procedure and I do appreciate everything she did for us. As an RN myself and as a parent, I have been around many doctors and in 22 years of nursing, she ranks pretty high as showing little to no compassion to new moms and their families. As a former employee of CHKD I am truly disheartened to have a doctor like her represent such a wonderful institution. The initial appt I had with her (which was a referral) I felt she was rude. However, I thought to give her the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe she was having a bad day. The day of my child’s surgery she was nice, but that evening when I called with questions she was rude AGAIN. The only reason I gave her a 2 was because the night I called she called back to follow up and was nice.

We saw her in Jan , 2017, she was not only rude and pushy to myself, but to my child as well. She traumatized her.
Heartless robot that only cares for her numbers. Rushed us into scheduling surgery without providing ultrasound, & gave us an expired prescription sponge to wash our child with.Said our child had indirect hernia & ultrasound wouldn't show, then followed up with it now showing after her nurses/her reviewed results before seeing us. After canceling surgery she didn't want to offer help said I'm not doing the surgery I don't need to see pictures (she asked us to take before). See someone who cares

I love this doctor. She is an amazing person. I don't trust anyone but her to care for my child! Thank God for Dr. Upadhyay!
Do NOT GO TO HER! Our son was rushed to a ER out of town. We were frantic because we were told by Upadhyay earlier that if he was not seen within 5 hours he would suffer serious consequences. We contacted Dr. Uphadhyay, his surgeon for help. Instead of helping us, she argued the facility where are son was treated would certainly have the right equipment to help him. When we told them they did not (no utlrasound equip) her response was, What do you want me to do? Horrible response for a doctor
She is not good with children or parents.
