Dr Layson was amazing! I am so thankful he was on call when I needed surgery! He has excellent bedside manners.

I had my gallbladder unexpectedly removed in March. I went in through the ER as an emergent case, and they eventually found I had gallbladder dyskinesia (essentially my gallbladder wasn’t contracting) which is indication for immediate removal alone. Florida Hospital Kissimmee brought on Dr. Layson to do my cholecystectomy. I had less than 2 hours from finding out my gallbladder would have to be removed, to being on the table. However, in that time I did manage to determine that Dr. Layson was an in-network provider for my insurance company (Cigna). Fast forward to a little over one month ago when I received a notice from Cigna stating this physician was going out-of-network and any visits after 6/15 would be out-of-network. I thought, “oh, no big deal, I don’t plan on seeing him again anyways!” Well, ends up it is a big deal. A little over three weeks ago I received a bill for $26,000. Knowing I had met my deductible this year, I called Cigna who relayed the provider did not accept their payment and was now balance billing me. They stated he didn’t have to accept their payment because he was out-of-network, even though they attempted to pay him in-network higher payments as it was an emergent surgery. WRONG. He was in-network on the date of my surgery, which was in March, he didn’t bill until the end of May (why?!) and my insurance didn’t attempt to pay until the end of June. So, knowing this, I assumed it would be an easy fix. Bill him in-network since he was under contract in March, right? Well, that’s what the representative initially said (and I was hopeful) but turns out that was wrong, too. Yesterday, after 3 weeks, I get a bill again from Dr. Layson for $20K and also from his PA (and surgical assistant) for $20K. Total: $40K. Both have refused payment from my insurance. I called Cigna back and now find out the problem is the taxpayer ID the surgeon is billing under. Unless he bills under the taxpayer ID which was in-network, there is “nothing” they can do about it except to go to negotiations, which can take up to 3 months. I have placed multiple calls to their billing department, and have left multiple messages, to no avail. I can’t sleep trying to figure out how I am in anyway going to pay $40K for a 45-minute laparoscopic surgery. I am worried about losing a lot of the stuff I worked very very hard for. I don’t understand how, in any way, this is right or okay with this surgeon or with the company he works for. This wasn’t an outpatient procedure and their predatory billing practices seem fraudulent, especially since they don’t return phone calls. In what world is it okay to bill someone $40K for an emergent procedure AND refuse insurance payment? $40K is more than some people make in ONE year. And I’ll tell you, it’s more than I will EVER be able to pay. All I can say is that if any of you are in the Kissimmee area, avoid Dr. Layson/Florida Surgical Associates - if you have a choice. Very thorough in explaining everything. He did my thyroid surgery and did a partial removal so I would not have to take medication for the rest of my life. Completely grateful for his gifts and talents. Thank you Dr. Layson!
