Dr. Ciotola…. And his staff were excellent. My hip replacement was my first major surgery and I was slightly nervous. The Dr. and his staff knew exactly what to do to deal with my anxiety disorder. I never really had a lot of pain or discomfort at any time! It was a terrific experience… after what I expected. I will be seeing Dr. Ciotola in the future for knee and other hip problems!

Warning do not go to this doctor. Rudely told me I had bad insurance and he messed up my knee. No doctor should ever be insulting to a patient and furthermore should know what they are doing when dealing with others health. It’s not about money always someone has to give a darn.

I fell and shattered my humerus in September 2019… I was taken to shock trauma from upper Chesapeake doctor said they would have to repair my shoulder rather than replace it… Being a nurse I knew that I would be better off if I had it Replaced but they repaired it and sure enough six weeks later they said they had to replace it because it wasn’t healing properly… I won’t go into the details about University of Maryland in the orthopedic Center but I can tell you that I had four surgeries there and I my last visit with the doctor he told me he wasn’t sure he could do anything more for me… My bone has been eaten away from an infection. I saw Dr. Ciotola and he said no problem that he could help me. he put a rod in my arm and I have probably 50% more function than I received from this jerk at University of Maryland. Dr.Ciotola is one of the good guys

Surgery went well. Recovery normal. At the 6 month follow up I was still feeling pain and Dr. said it was normal. I got a 2nd opinion and was told I needed revision surgery because the implant had not fused.

Dr. Ciatolla has a fan club miles long--just ask around the waiting room. In my own experience, he is intuitive, understanding, a good listener, and a GREAT hip surgeon. And not hard to look at, either.

I was at Dr. Ciatola’s office yesterday feeling quite fearful regarding a knee injection that I was about to receive. My previous experience with another doctor was not a comfortable one. Here in Dr. Ciatola’s office I received caring, professional, and painless treatment.

Too many red flags......The initial consultation was to figure out the cause of swelling and pain in the right knee. Dr. Ciotala recommended a cortisone injection into the knee. This would not solve the swollen knee. His next recommendation was pain meds. Still would not solve the swelling of the knee. The next recommendation was to have an MRI of the right knee; which I agreed to do. The MRI result showed arthritis. Dr. Ciotala telephoned me to have my knee replaced. My response to him was that I am too young for that type of procedure....He then proceeded to recommend cleaning up the knee through Arthroscopy Knee W/ Menisectomy and Chondroplasty. I agreed with skepticism. Why the MRI and cleaning up the knee was not his first recommendation? I have canceled the surgery with him to get a second opinion.

Dr. Ciotola is an amazing man. He replaced both hips. Was always so kind and gentle. He is my hero 2022

2/21/22 - I just had my second hip replaced by Dr. Ciotola, twelve years after the first one was replaced. I trust him completely. I have had great success with the first, am still recovering from the 2nd. He, his staff, and the staff at Mercy Medical were caring, kind, always compassionate, and knowledgeable. I have and will continue to recommend Dr. Ciotola to friends. I am very grateful for his skills in the anterior approach to hip replacement, which makes recovery and rehabilitation so easy!

Hip replacement surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Ciotola, Mercy Hospital, and Jaime Karp, Dr. C's wonderful Surgical Coordinator. I received caring, efficient attention at all levels. I have more procedures coming up, and they will be my providers.

No - I believe he was too rushed when he did my knee replacement two years ago. It didn’t place correctly and he as much admitted it the day after. He was experimenting with some sort of wrap after surgery which prevented me from bending the knee at all or participating in beginning rehab in the hospital. It was a comedy of errors. I worked so hard but it took way too long and too many pain pills to get to pain free and it’s still painful too often. He brings in several people when he sees you afterward and it’s difficult to form a relationship. When he came in immediately before my surgery and didn’t even speak to me, I knew then……it was too late. I will find another surgeon for my other knee.

Dr. Ciotola replaced my knee then replaced my hip then had to do it again 1 year later because the hardware was moving. Still I made an appointment for my husband to get his knee drained. He ended up recommending a knee scope 2 days after my husband had a blood clot 2 weeks later died from blood clots bursting in brain. Now I am not saying he did anything wrong but after my husband didn’t return for his sutures to be removed. I ended up calling there to speak to Dr. C I had to leave a message. Well I got no response not even sorry for your loss considering I had been a patient for a few years. Terrible bedside manner but wasn’t like that when I first started going there. Oh and if you are overweight and have any sweat bumps in your enclosed areas he will embarrass you in front of everyone in the OR. Dr. Ciotola recently did surgery for my torn meniscus. At my initial appointment, I complained about hip pain also. Dr. Ciotola took the time to look at both my MRI and hip xray and told me that I had lower back issues not hip problems. He sent my for PT prior to my knee surgery to strengthen my back and my knee. And 2 weeks after the knee surgery, I am in much better shape and a whole lot less pain than I was a month ago. I can't say enough about how wonderful he is. He is a man of few words but he listens and he is a wonderful surgeon. What could be better than that. I recommend him highly.

Had my initial Appointment with Dr Ciotola July 2021. He was very kind and knowledgeable, he took the time to go over my MRI and the new xray they took at Mercy. I was told he could “fix me up with a new hip”, and instead of having to make an additional appt. , he sent me right over to his surgical coordinators office , where she gave me the entire surgical packet, gave me a surgery date , and I left there feeling like everything was answered . As I’ve mentioned Dr Ciotas name in my home town , I can’t believe how many people love him and Mercy for their hip and knee replacements. Be prepared for a conveyor-belt style of treatment if you are uncertain about treatment options and wish to meet with Dr. Citolia for the purposes of a consultation. Scheduled an appointment for 10:00 a.m., with a request to arrive 30 minutes prior. My presence was acknowledged at 10:40 when I was asked to provide "films." At 10:50 a.m., I, along with 3 others, was ushered to an ex-ray waiting room. At 11:00, ex-rays were taken and I was asked to return to the waiting room. At 11:12 a.m., my name was called and I was asked to wait in Consultation Room 1. At 11:22. Dr. Ciotola entered the room and asked me: "So, what's new?" Had a terrible experience here they set me up for procedure to get injections in my knees and it was denied by my insurance company due to lack of information from his office and then was told they sent an appeal to my insurance company a month later no word so I call my insurance company and they said they received no appeal from them I tried to call his assistant Amanda twice and she did not call me back I have been in extreme pain since this all started and has altered my performance at work and other things I do I have since contacted another DR and will never go here again!! thanks for the $167 bill for a cortisone shot that lasted 2 days! My total knee replacement couldn’t have gone any better then it did. The staff and Dr Ciatola are just wonderful people who truly care about their patients and the best outcome possible for them.

I work in the health field and am often critical of how inefficient and non-patient-centered medical care can be. I was overwhelmed with happiness at my experience with Dr. Ciatola and his team, and the care I received at Mercy Hospital! From the beginning and through the post-op period, I received excellent care and attention. Dr. C is more than your run-of-mill surgeons. He focuses intently on all his many patients and treats us with respect, demonstrating his knowledge and soul, in and after surgery. And, even better, my hip is like new!

I was 70 years-old when I first saw Dr Joseph Ciotola in March of 2018 for my painful, arthritic knees. He advised me that I needed total replacement of both my knees, and explained it was his preference to do the surgeries 10 days apart. Both he and his professional staff were very attentive to all details and everything was very well organized. I feel that Dr Ciotola did excellent work replacing my damaged knee joints. After surgery, my care was excellent as well. Both my stays at Mercy Hospital we're comfortable and I received excellent nursing care, and effective physical therapy. His office staff took care of all the extensive Medicare insurance forms, as well, so I was able to focus only on my physical therapy without distractions. In my experience, Dr Ciotola not only took the time to explain the knee joint procedures clearly, he also explained the role of the recovery classes led by Mercy Hospital's excellent therapy team. I can wholeheartedly recommend Dr Ciotla.

Dr Ciotola is a great physician along with his staff you will not find a better orthopedic. He replaced my husbands right hip and he is doing great and pain free, Thank you for a wonderful experience.

I had the best surgery experience with Dr. Ciotola and his staff when I had my left hip replaced. My stay at Mercy was amazing.

I am at my 2 year mark since my surgery. Dr. Ciotola ROCKS - I would go back to him (hopefully I never need to) I have sent many of my friends to him. Keep doing what you do Doc!

Dr. Ciatola replaced my right hip on April 24th. I can now walk normally and without pain. I had struggled to even walk with a cane and was in constant pain. I highly recommend this fine Surgeon.

Dr Ciotola gave me my life back with my hip replacement surgery. I can’t praise him enough. I had excellent care from both Mercy and Dr Ciotola.

Dr. C did my hip replacement. I chose him after seeing 3 other doctors. I also knew 5 people who had him do their hip replacements and they all highly recommended him. He is professional, knowledgeable, kind, and has a wonderful bedside manner. I am thrilled with my results and would choose him all over again. The entire staff was wonderful, too.

I have had shoulder surgery and bilateral partial knee replacements done by Dr. Ciotola and my husband had a hip replacement and a revision due to metal failure. Great Dr. really knows his stuff is a definite credit to his occupation. I would refer him to anyone with sports injury or normal wear and tear from age. This man is a fraud. He performs so many surgeries a week you are no longer a person. This is assembly line surgery. I had problems from day one after surgery. He tells me to see a psychologist my pain isn’t real. I couldn’t get a hold of anyone in his office before surgery because I had questions. They were friendly at ignoring me. They would get visibly annoyed I wasn’t acting correctly. I wasn’t allowing them to treat me like a number. He came in to mark my leg for surgery he didn’t say a word. He scribbled on my leg. It wasn’t an attempt to sign his name it was a mark. It looked like a two year old did it. Why is this important. It is important because it illustrates a total lack of regard for treating patients as individual people not another number of the day. There is no pre op communication and no post op. There was a very kind PA that helped me when I got an infection. Dr Ciotola never mentioned the infection never talked to me about it. He just told me everything looked great. This was 3 days into my infection. He seemed visibly annoyed also. My infection, which was superficial, was not part of the plan so he just ifnored it. I've been been a patient of Ortho-Maryland for years and experience knee problems since I was child. Ortho always said there was nothing they could give me for pain and I need a knee replacement at 40. I visit Dr. Ciotola and he started giving me knee gel injections and the pain slowly went away. I scheduled surgery and could not get anyone to call me before surgery or after. He has great technique but you are definetly part of an assembly line. He averages 8-10 surgeries 3 days a week.The way I see it this leaves him 8 days out of the month to see 90 post op patients. He than has to see 90 more pre op to schedule. Trust me it doesn't work out for the patient. I got a surgical site infection that was handled by the hospital staff. I was transferred out within 2 hours Total hip replacemen

He has great bed side manners, which I love. Everything is explained in detail to you before you hit that surgery room. This will be my 3rd hip replacement and i've also had 2 decor compressions.(I WILL NOT GO IN DETAIL ABOUT THE JERK WHO DID THEM) I tell everyone who is having problems to go see him. Dr. Ciotola is an amazing doctor. He was recommended by my daughter's friend. He is very knowledgeable & kind. I met with several other doctors, but he put me at ease & gave me the confidence to have a total knee replacement. I had to come from Camp Hill, PA, but I'm so happy with the results. I had the surgery two months ago & I'm back to normal & doing everything I did before I injured my knee. His staff is very caring & Mercy Hospital is the best. I'm a 49 year old female that needed a hip replacement due to labrum tear and shallow hip sockets. 7 months out from surgery I and doing everything I love! About a year before my surgery walking more than .5 miles was painful, bringing in the groceries and sleeping. I was very hesitant about the surgery but dr. Ciatola assured me after healing I could go back to the active lifestyle I was use to. I can easily walk 3 .5 miles an hour, exercise, and bike! Love his expertise!

I had an anterior hip replacement performed by Dr. Ciotola on February 14, 2017 at Mercy Hospital. I left the hospital the very next day. I had very minimal pain throughout. Most significantly, two days after the surgery I was walking unaided: no walker, no cane. I was able to drive my car three days after surgery. Anyone considering hip replacement surgery should definitely explore the newer anterior approach as opposed to having the surgery done through the back. Much faster recovery

I have been a patient of Dr. Ciotola for many years. I have had two surgeries, and many consultations. I have found the Doctor and his entire staff to be competent, courteous and kind. I would recommend him highly.
