Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also referred to as rehabilitation medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with diagnosing, evaluating, and treating patients with physical disabilities. These disabilities may arise from conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system such as neck and back pain, sports injuries, or other painful conditions affecting the limbs, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Alternatively, the disabilities may result from neurological trauma or disease such as spinal cord injury, head injury or stroke. A physician certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation is often called a physiatrist. The primary goal of the physiatrist is to achieve maximal restoration of physical, psychological, social and vocational function through comprehensive rehabilitation. Pain management is often an important part of the role of the physiatrist. For diagnosis and evaluation, a physiatrist may include the techniques of electromyography to supplement the standard history, physical, x-ray and laboratory examinations. The physiatrist has expertise in the appropriate use of therapeutic exercise, prosthetics (artificial limbs), orthotics and mechanical and electrical devices.

While Dr. Whiteson has a good bedside manner (he is friendly and reassuring), that is where the positives end. He does not seem to have experience with CFS/ME and recommends what is essentially GET to his long covid patients. The very first thing he recommends after the initial intake is a cardio pulmonary stress test, which - as per my infectious disease / CFS specialist - is not useful whatsoever to measure anything related to CFS whatsoever unless you have a follow-up to measure the post-exertional response the following day. If you ask anyone with long covid, they’ll tell you that a cardio pulmonary stress will cause a massive relapse, which is exactly what happened for me. At the follow-up to the test, he told me that the results showed that I was “fine,” and recommended no medical advice whatsoever other than to gradually increase my activity levels. Thanks, but I didn’t need three trips to NYU and a massive relapse to get that advice. He was not able to recommend any specific physical therapist or program. For the cherry on top, his lack of understanding of long covid / CFS and the resulting writeup he provided to MetLife resulted in a denied long-term disability claim and cost me nearly a full month’s worth of pay. Ironically, I may not have had to take the additional month if it hadn’t been for the relapse following the stress test. While Dr. Whiteson may be able to provide helpful treatment and advice for certain types of issues, I do not recommend him if you have long covid. While Dr. Whiteson has a good bedside manner (he is friendly and reassuring), that is where the positives end.
